3. What fandoms do you write for?

These days it’s mainly Tatort. And I guess I should also mention Star Trek, even though it’s been a couple of years. And then there’s the odd TV show or movie that somehow piqued my interest, plus stuff like Harry Potter and Sherlock back in the day. But my main fandom, and the one I feel most at home in, is definitely Tatort. 

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Apart from the number 1 spot, these were actually quite surprising to me.

Past, Present and Beyond: Star Trek: AOS (Post-Star Trek Beyond), Kirk/Spock - Spock retrieves the box that contains the belongings of Ambassador Spock and carefully puts it on his desk.

Über Nacht Bleiben: Tatort Münster, Thiel/Boerne - Boerne findet, man kann nachts ruhig in einem Bett schlafen. Um nicht so allein zu sein.

Grün und richtiges Grün: Tatort Münster, Thiel/Boerne - „Das kann Ihnen doch völlig egal sein, mit wem ich…“ Boerne verstummte und starrte ihn aus seinen grünen Augen an. „Ist mir aber nicht egal“, sagte Thiel.

Wenn aus Münster Meer wird: Tatort Münster, Thiel/Boerne - Es war ein warmer Sommerabend, er hatte hervorragendes Essen vor sich stehen und er saß mit den Menschen an einem Tisch, die er eigentlich am liebsten mochte. 5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Oh, absolutely. I love reading comments and the least I can do is say thanks when people take the time to write one. It’s also always fun to talk more about an aspect of the fic or a character, and I love when I suddenly find myself talking to people outside of the comment section. Fandom’s supposed to be about community, after all.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I tend to write happy endings. But I guess Manchmal hört sie heimlich zu (Tatort Münster, Wilhelmine Klemm/Monika Hanke-Helmhövel) and In Vino Veritas (Tatort Münster, Thiel/Boerne & Klemm/Krusenstern) have the angstiest endings I’ve ever written. They’re both Hurt No Comfort and Unrequited Love.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I guess, all of my other fics have rather happy endings. I don’t actually think there is a happiest.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Haven’t in ages. As I said, the Tatort fandom is nice <3 But some of the Harry Potter and Sherlock people were… intense. A couple of times people told me a fic was alright, but I should’ve written for another ship, which isn’t hate, of course, but why? And then there was this one time some biphobic asshole complained about me writing a character as bisexual ¯\_(ツ)_/¯   

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do. The explicit kind. Sometimes it serves a purpose in a story, sometimes it’s just for the fun of it.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Do crossovers between different Star Trek shows or between different Tatort teams count as proper crossovers? If so, I’ve actually written quite a few of them. If not, then the only ones I’ve written were back in the day with a Harry Potter fandom friend. We used to take our favourite characters from all sorts of media, plus our self-insert OCs and send them off on all kinds of adventures together.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don’t think so.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but I know that people have used Google Translate in order to read my German language fic for a French movie.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yep, see question 10. Also, @fallingforfandoms and I are currently working on a Tatort AU together, which is very exciting.

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

I don’t actually know. It varies. But Kirk/Spock, Janeway/Crusher, Thiel/Boerne and Klemm/Lürsen will always be among my favourites.  

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I’ve got the beginnings of a Star Trek Bake Off AU somewhere. I still love the idea, but right now I can’t really imagine that I will ever continue writing it.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Oh boy, maybe my readers would be better at answering this question. I like to think that I’m quite alright at writing dialogue. But maybe that’s because it's what I find most enjoyable and what often comes to me fairly easy.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I feel that my writing sometimes lacks description or insights into a character between dialogue. And I’m not that good with longer stories. Plotting is hard for those, especially for crime shows, when you want to incorporate the crime aspect. And I am a slow writer.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

If it fits the story, sure. So far, I’ve mainly used dialect rather than a completely different language.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Technically, Star Trek in 5th grade or so. But I didn’t know that I was writing fanfic or what a fandom even was. First thing I published was for Harry Potter, and first thing I published on AO3 was for Tatort Münster.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

I’m bad at choosing favourites. It would depend on my mood, I guess. Right now, if I absolutely had to pick one, I’d probably go with In Vino Veritas, which might be strange, since it’s a rather short one and doesn’t have a happy ending. But I just like it.

Hank with a Devil Hunter s/o: Status Quo

You think I'd be leaving out Hank's team, did you? I've been waiting to do this after the relationship finally solidified. 'Meet the parents'? Nah, 'Meet your boyfriend's team'. Also apparently Hank has an ex??? If so... hehehehe. Can be read gender neutral or preferred gender. Enjoy.

It hadn't been long since you and Hank officially began dating. You always wore the bracelet he made for you and he kept his special blender Devil Arm 'Beezlebub' as part of his main arsenal. The Crossling's personality now came with an animalistic possessiveness.

Yeah, Hank became even more of a feral creechur to strangers. You had to stop him from growling at clients, unless said clients were flirting on you or being dickheads. Then it's fair game. Also any kisses from him were doggy kisses due to the metal jaw. Didn't stop any biting though.

Anyway, the two of you were currently at home. The Grunt assassin kneading your stomach like a cat again as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure played on the TV. It was peaceful until the sound of gunfire went off behind your house. Da fuck???

Hank and you ran out to see what the hell was going on to see an unbelievable sight. Grunts, a small army currently swarming three other grunts: one wearing a headset both with stone hands, one wearing tea shade glasses alongside a visible lip, and one wearing a face mask with what seems like a bolt in his head.

How the fuck did Deimos, Sanford and 2BDamned alongside A.A.H.W. members get to your world? A question that was put on hold as Hank's team needed some serious help. Everyone was thrown off guard when the two of you charged into the fray.

A good chunk of the A.A.H.W immediately ran away and even fainted upon seeing you, guess humans really did freak out Grunts. The still aggressive members were either shot down by a hail of bullets or torn apart by Beezlebub's vortex. You hunted down and tied up the rest.

From what Hank said, not all of A.A.H.W were members by choice as a large chunk had been forced to join. You would have to call Dante for help on the subject. First priority was Hank's team, Status Quo.

Apparently a lot happened on their side than just yours. Without Hank, the A.A.H.W had tore reality with the Improbability Drive even further to the point it was hanging by very fragile threads. That's how they alongside a good chunk of the enemy forces ended up here.

Other than Deimos getting revived and missions being harder without Hank, nothing much had change. Although all three of them were shocked that you and the assassin were dating. Deimos threw in a few dirty jokes only to get whacked on the head by you.

Didn't take long for Dante to show up with Vergil and Nero in tow. The captured Grunts were given the option to be put on probation under Devil May Cry's watch or help rebuild Redgrave and get granted citizenship there. It was a clean half n half.

Deimos, Sanford and 2BDamned however would live in your home as they decided to join Devil May Cry. You can guess part of it being a strategic advantage from 'Doc' as 2BDamned is often called. He's the type of person to do it from personal opinion.

Just lucky there were three spare bedrooms in your house and the trio definitely follow the rules to the letter. Didn't stop any normalcy in the house from disappearing altogether. Normal shenanigans to complete bullshit.

Doc somehow established a whole private network selling demon parts, information and such to hunters around the world in less than a week. Sanford got ahold of a bloody helicopter alongside turning your shed into a explosive storage. While Deimos set up a computer system that could hack fucking government satellites. What the absolute hell???!

They were more normal at Devil May Cry than at home. 2BDamned got along with Vergil and Trish the most. It was Nico and Dante for Deimos. While Sanford got along well with Lady and Nero.

Pretty sure you caught Deimos flirting with both Nico and Sanford. Definitely going to tease the hell outta her as payback for the date incident. She fired back that at least the Grunt Smoker could still kiss which earned a middle finger from Hank.

The teashade glasses wearing Grunt in question kicked Dante's diet of pizza n sundaes to the curb and made the group actual meals. You believe Sanford wanted to use the recipes he found from that cookbook in your kitchen. Doc took the job of doing finances and keeping the shop tidy.

As for the former A.A.H.W Grunts, they were fairing very well with their new lease on life. You found a bunch of Thank You cards alongside a few trinkets from them for the crew outside Devil May Cry. On occasion do you see the Grunts having a good time with the people in the city.

Despite the new but welcomed insanity, Hank's world needs to be dealt with soon. Nevada will be saved from this reality bending madness. For now, you would bask in the hold of your strange lover and not waste any second of this peace.

And that's it! I won't tell you how long I've been wanting to drop Hank's coworkers in this. Deimos has the same condition as our Failed Mag meaning he can turn his Dedmos form off n on. Man can't really smoke since his stone fingers would crush any cigarettes.

I imagine Deimos using those old fashioned wooden smoking pipes but it blows bubbles. Just because he can't smoke anymore doesn't mean he'll find an alternative. Also he definitely bond with someone like Nico. Smokers stick together.

There will be a later headcanon with the group delving into Nevada. You might be seeing more Madness Combat characters pop up too. As for Hank's Devil Arm Beelzebub, the name felt fitting. Beelzebub represents Gluttony and a blender won't stop shredding stuff unless it breaks.

Change the F*cking Channel

This one is kind of... well... VERY political and I will make no apologies. We’re living in a time where simply being human is political. If you don’t think so, you haven’t been paying attention. And you NEED to pay attention.

There is an amazing podcaster by the name of Micah Hanks. While better known for his eponymous show centering on UFO/UAP phenomenon, he did have a great current events podcast called Middle Theory which I have binged a few times. One of the recurring themes on the show was the issue of “cancel culture” and... yeah... I have things to say on the subject. 

No, I’m not taking Mr. Hanks on. On the contrary, we’re very much of a similar mind on the topic. Mr. Hanks, in my opinion, expressed the pitfalls of cancel culture rather sensibly and eloquently. I just want to take a few moments to share my feelings on it.

I was born in 1980. If you remember the 1980s, you remember that it was the “liberal” left declaring war on music and video games. (Take a breath. I’m a Progressive Liberal, so you’re not gonna be getting MAGA bullshit. And if you want MAGA bullshit... go somewhere else.) Tipper Gore, Al’s missus, is the reason why nearly every album in my metalhead kid brother’s CD collection had a parental advisory label. It’s been “liberals” decrying simulated violence in video games for violent actions among young people. (Not, of course, addressing issues like home life, mental health issues, bullying, etc.) 

Now, it wasn’t just the left, of course. Who could forget the late Jerry Falwell’s homophobic crusade against the Teletubbies? And, as a child of the 80s, I clearly recall conservatives losing it over shows like He-Man, She-Ra, Rainbow Bright, The Care Bears, The Smurfs, and my personal favorite, Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Why? These shows promoted tolerance, inclusion, environmentalist ideologies and, in the case of Captain Planet, Neopaganism. They weren’t wrong about that, but being a Wiccan kid, that’s why I loved this stuff. But, you know, you can’t promote tolerance and inclusion because that’s a threat to “traditional values”. (Translation: Christian values) 

Back in the 80s and 90s, when both sides were being painfully stupid about what American kids should and should not be allowed to consume, the general public seemed to have the same attitude. If you don’t like it, don’t consume it. 

What the ever-loving fuck happened? Look, most reasonable people can agree that there are some ideas that are harmful. Calling for violence against any individual or group is bad, regardless of how you might feel about them. Hate-speech is unacceptable at any time. However, due to the 24 hours news cycle and it’s 10 second sound bites as well as the proliferation of social media, there is no room for nuanced discussion. Some public figure says something that gave you boo-boos on your feelings, cancel them.

Like I said, I consider myself to be a Progressive Liberal, but I come from a more moderate/centrist time. I come from a time when it was possible to have well reasoned and measured dialogue about opposing viewpoints. I come from a time when the fringe elements didn’t have 24/7 platforms to barf up their conspiracy theories or their anti-whatever manifestos. I come from a time when schools promoted critical thinking. *sigh* Those were the days...

Obviously, we had people try to limit what could and could not be disseminated, but we had ways around it. If you remember the 90s, you know it was all about independent media. Independent music labels, pirate radio, independent coffee shops with open mic nights, zines... man, I miss my teens! This was how Generation X and “Elder Millennials” got by the censorship. And now... they support censorship because that was cancel culture is. 

Let me give you all a little more perspective. My parents were Boomers. When they were kids, there were only 3 broadcast television networks and a handful of AM/FM radio stations. Print media was how most people consumed the daily news and news media was forbidden to report on anything BUT the news. No pundits pontificating and giving their opinions. They just gave you the facts. (It would be great if we could get back to that.) When my parents were young, the married couples could not share a bed in films or television. Lucille Ball broke ground for women’s rights when she refused to hide her pregnancy on her show, “I Love Lucy”. (She also helped get Star Trek made, so praise her name, nerds.) 

Compare that to today. We have hundreds of thousands of podcasts spanning just as many genres and topics. Mr. Hanks has half of them! (I tease with love. He only had 3... for now.) Broadcast television is almost dead, but it’s still out there with hundreds of channels and then you have the growing number of video streaming services. Social media is.. well, it’s a cesspool, but it’s there. We are in a time where we actually have too many options for our entertainment and for our information. And yet... one show, one person, one song, one “something” sets off a small demographic and everyone has to come out in force and demand that he/she/it/they get “canceled”. Why? Change the fucking channel. Find something else. You have the freedom to choose... just like everyone else.

Jay: when the show started I was voting for him, however I stopped because he seems problematic at times so now whenever he's on the screen my face goes like 🙄 and I don't even know why.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Close Friend Ep 6 fin: (Imagine You/KimmonCopter) - Fan gets a VR of his idol, they fall in love, but does it transfer to reality? A unique story and great casting of Kim & Cop into roles that stretched both actors. My favorite of the series and a good closer. Close Friend as a whole is so uneven I can’t recommend it, but individual episodes (3 MaxNat, 5 JimmyTommy, 6 KimCop) are okay.

Top Secret Together Ep 3 - no subs as yet but I still found it enjoyable. I like this series, it’s quiet. Sure, the only really unique touches are the office setting and the gay advice dads, but honestly I’LL TAKE IT. Of course my favorite couple is the hazer + freshie back at uni. What can I say? I’m a sucker for the old OLD tropes. (Should I just do a SOTUS+S rewatch this weekend to get it out of my system?) 

Y-Destiny Ep 9 - Look, I’m just not a fan of the rake archetype BUT my favorite combo for this is another player, and BL almost never does that. But ta da! Y-D wins with f-buds + high heat pulp (well I suppose this is university-set Cheewin). I don’t love honest-gay messy in a long haul series (Friendzone... shudder) but I don’t mind it in short form. So I think this may be my favorite installment in this series so far.

Fish Upon The Sky Ep 8 - *big fat sigh* I thought they were going to redeem Pi by having him be genuinely nice to Meen, but no it was all to do with a dumb pin. Even though he suffers from crazy stalking in this ep, I still don’t like Pi but I’m TOTALLY on his side. Is FUTS taking us on a light weight The Effect journey? Because at this juncture I think I’d prefer that. 

Nitiman Ep 4 - honestly it’s like Nitiman is vested in showing FOTS exactly what it’s doing wrong. Both shows introduced faen fatales this week. But Nitiman did theirs with a sympathetic character, genuine interest on both sides, bisexual confusion, and sweetness. In every way the opposite of (and superior to) FOTS. Even claiming, outing, and stalker characters are happening but treated differently. It’s like parallel universes. Not sure how I feel about the ending kiss though. Still, this is my favorite currently airing show. I look forward to @heretherebedork explaining to me my own feelings and why I want to forgive Bbomb the kiss but not Mork for anything. Since I’m evidently morally hypocritically confused. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Love is Science? (Taiwan) Ep 10 (BL subplot) - Taiwan is experiencing a C19 surge right now so this series will be delayed at least 20 days. 

Be Loved in House: I Do (Taiwan) Ep 3 - dropped with subs thank heavens, all the usual tropes when you pair grumpy + tsundere: challenges, bets, crashing into beds, veiled threats... oh my! Gay boys in stripped sweaters giving advice in cafes is my new favorite thing. It’s the BL version of the “bartender is my psyche” trope. Still finding the boss character creepy. About Hank Wang (plays Shi Lei) anyone else obsessed with his sanpaku eyes? Just me? Fair. Also he keeps reminding me of Pluem Purim, I have no idea why. Something in the mannerisms, I think. They don’t really look alike. (This show may also be delayed.)

My Lascivious Boss (Vietnam) Ep 8 - continues to be good, we now have 2 faen fatales, blackmail, worried friends, and the secret identity slowly devolving. Looks like we get at least two more episodes and could be as many as 12? Very much enjoying this show. 

Most Peaceful Place 2 (Vietnam) Ep 3 (AKA 6) fin - it was fine, they always rush the ending a bit in Vietnamese BL. I found the first season much stronger than this second one over all. But since they aired in the same year and there’s only six total I feel like they should be judged as a whole. So I guess I’ll say, RECOMMENDED with serious pacing issues and some plot drag particularly in the second half. 

Gossip 

The cast of Until We Meet Again met together, ostensibly for their own amusement but speculation is that it has something to do with Between Us AKA Hemp Rope. 

Breaking News

Singto’s next starring role BL got announced Paint With Love. Between him and Ohm, they seem to be attempting to corner the market. I’m in favor. Singto plays Met, a wedding organizer, who hires Phap, a poor artist, to work on a wedding painting. Phap messes something up and ends up having to work for Med on a more permanent basis. Yet another office set BL from Thailand, following in Japan and Taiwan’s well suited footsteps... we hope. Phap is played by Tae (the original Forth in 2 Moons). No side dishes announced as yet. 

Pornographer Playback is airing, the third in the series from Japan (first 2 = The Pornographer AKA The Novelist & Mood Indigo). Not recommended unless you want non-BL gay cinema with high heat, and don’t mind the mess Japan always doles out to go with it. Such as: morally flexible characters, crass manipulation, gaslighting, cheating, seduction of a minor, so much smoking, het porn, and ambiguous, sad, or depressing endings. Part one of this final installment has dropped, part two is not yet available. No subs (even if they say they have them, they’re autiogen nonsense.)

Tomorrow are the Gotham Awards and the start of the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, with the Golden Globes voting on the 13th. 

The Gotham Awards nominations were announced in early November and it’s interesting how different the landscape is looking now that more films have come out. 

Of the Best Actress nods that Gotham announced, only Frances McDormand is still in conversation for her performance in NOMADLAND.  Of their Best Actor nominations only Chadwick Boseman for MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM is in major contention, with Riz Ahmed a lesser part of the conversation (whereas his SOUND OF METAL costar, Paul Raci, has so far won nine critics awards).

Rightfully, so. 

Considering the Oscars nominations voting isn’t until March 5th, the landscape could change once more. Currently, the awards are centered around indie fare (which isn’t unusual during awards season) and Netflix fare.  So far I’m happy with the crowd: Vanessa Kirby (PIECES OF A WOMAN), Carey Mulligan (PROMISNG YOUNG WOMAN), Viola Davis (MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM), Delroy Lindo (DA 5 BLOODS), Youn Yuh-jung (MINARI) Frances McDormand (NOMADLAND) all deserve the accolades they are receiving.  

But I would welcome some surprises like the one the San Diego Film Critics Association doled out when they nominated Peter MacDissi for Best Supporting Actor for the Amazon film UNCLE FRANK.

Which is a joy because he’s superb and the film itself is excellent 

with Paul Bettany probably giving the best performance of his career. 

Written and directed by Alan Ball (SIX FEET UNDER, TRUE BLOOD) Sophia Lillis (IT, I AM NOT OKAY WITH THIS) stars as Betty, a small-town young woman who has a close relationship with her Big City uncle Frank (Bettany). Years later, now in college she discovers that he is gay - something he has kept from the family. When a family tragedy occurs, the pair get to know each other on a road trip back to their family. 

Another long-shot nomination I’d love to see is one for Diane Lane in LET HIM GO.

She gives a powerhouse performance in a powerful film.

Although Tom Hanks is always in awards consideration, I think lately it’s been by rote, but with his work in Paul Greengrass’ NEWS OF THE WORLD, it is justified talk.

The vote for the worst awards The Razzies nominations will be announced in March, with awards announced typically the day before the Oscars, but the St. Louis Film Critics have a Worst Film category.  Their nominations for Worst Film include ARTEMIS FOWL, THE DOORMAN, DOWNHILL (which, I think is a more expectation thing because it stars Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Will Ferrell so one will think it’s a full-on laugh riot, when in reality it’s a Scandi- existential comedy drama; a remake of the Swedish film Force Majeure.), HILLBILLY ELEGY and  WONDER WOMAN  1984, which eff off, St. Louis Film Critics Association. I loved almost every minute of WW84. 

The main complaint I would see was that it was too camp or cheesy. One critic sneered that it was Richard Lester, meaning it was SUPERMAN II. As if calling a film SUPERMAN II is an insult. Now calling it Superman 4, on the other hand....

One film/performance that won’t be getting a Razzie, seemingly, is Tom Holland’s Russo Bros. directed CHERRY.  The first screening / Q&A (moderated by Robert Downey Jr.) was held and reviews are favorable.

Next Generation Roman Empire, NATIONAL TREASURE 3 are Stolen Indigenous Treasures !  Predictions, Easter Eggs +

Really #NT3!  Anticipation is an understatement.  The Artifex, Master minds behind these movies are brilliant entertainers for this genre.  I love the inspiring and moving music, heart-pounding hunt, and down home banter.  But that’s just the spice on the entre sprinkled on the substance.  This years #Sibilla Oracle archives boiled down important connections and gems leading to our current state/ circumstances as a Nation as well as our global relationships and history.

I predict that, like so many other remakes and additional installment of other movies, we will see Asian connections, multicultural caste, rainbow connections, men in heels, and masks of all kinds.  I also predict the next generation of GATES in this new movie and maybe even Reilly will father in a POOL boy/girl or even twins. Science will bring the STEM project into it as well. Social Justice and standing for a cause and cure for woes, sickness, 

I love this movie theme because Conspiracy theory is the meme of National Treasure.  Reilly brings it with his book in NT2 and why sleep on him since he is also a technical maverick.  He knows stuff and sees patterns while Ben has knowledge and facts rolling off of his tongue.  Together they can unglue any sticky riddle or heist.  Abagail is the beauty and skilled curator needed to unearth the archeological digs.  And the Patrick Gates, the father who lives in the White House, is the senior advisor and the Anchises to Aeneas. 

The Gates Ancestry roots the decadency to the STAGE which is an anagram of GATES.   In NT2, when John W. Booth enters the theater to assassinate 16th President, Abraham Lincoln  there is a sign  STAGE DOOR.  That seems benign but I think is a code for the Gates family.  A Gate is a doorway or portal.  

 Pool is a LOop scrambled. Gates is Stage. there fore...

Civil War and Easter/Good Friday connection with DMX death and new National holiday Juneteenth.

This is in line with the National Treasure’s theme of Civil War, Statue of Liberty, War against slavery and for Freedom.  Sic semper tyrannis is a Latin phrase meaning "thus always to tyrants" exclaimed by Booth on STAGE, which suggests the fall of tyrants, T REX.  We are witnessing the fall of the Empires and the raising of new crowns surrounding the globe.  or flat earth.  

I hope Ben’s dad is still alive for this new movie.  You know, Angelina Jolie’s dad, Jon Voight.  I liked him in the Lara Croft Tomb Raider Movie, where he was a member of the Illuminati.

We will see that the 47th page (74  in reverse) of the secret presidential book may be revealed in the 3rd chapter.  The Eagle and the Scroll, page 47, is a global Empire, like the Holy Roman Empire proclaimed it was.  The New Holy Roman Empire will crown it’s Cesar with a healthcare symbol of Aesculapius. He will be a doctor and a god.  Apollo’s own child with Coronis (Crown and Crown).  

The International Treasure 3 maybe a cure and a cause.

The Templar Treasure starts out in Africa in the first movie’s recounting by the grandfather in the beginning.  But Ben spoke of dividing it up to museums in Europe.  They even show Egyptian Golden statues and scrolls from Alexandria, in Africa.  

Charles Segars is a mystery to me.  He is into movies and National Security.  Like our former Treasurer, Mnuchin, seems very much in the know of future happenings.

There is an unnamed writer for this movie that I can’t remember his name. I’ll try to look him up.  But his other works are spot on to future events as well.

I love the movies and can’t wait to see the next one, but that doesn’t mean that what is represents sits well with me.

Should these movies actually be called STOLEN TREASURES?  And they honor people who are despicable villains of history.  You maybe rooting for the “good guys” but are they really just on the same coin of tyrants?  After all they are in cahoots with the bad guys in both movies.

Fourteen years on from its theatrical release, it’s easy to forget what a sensation Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan – usually shortened to simply Borat – was upon release. Based on a character by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen – who was at the time a cult artist best known for another character Da Ali G – Borat was a new form of cinema. It was guerrilla comedy, an improvised fake documentary in which Cohen, in character as a backwards communist bloc journalist, interacted with real people in the United States to make pointed commentaries on American culture.

Honestly, I did not see Borat in the theater. However, I was excited to see it. By the time it was released on video, I was kind of underwhelmed by the movie. It had some moments, but way too much relied on stupidity and shock value. Still, I could see how it would be funnier if you had experienced it in a theater with a crowd rather than sitting alone in your home.

Cohen’s career has had its share of ups and downs ever since. His follow-up film Bruno, which was a similar type of film to Borat, but it was just horrible, unwatchable and a huge box office disappointment. So were his follow-ups The Dictator and Grimsby.

Otherwise, Cohen has made a respectable career as an eccentric supporting actor, playing intriguing roles in the likes of Sweeney Todd, Hugo, Dinner for Schmucks, Les Misérables, Anchorman 2, Alice Through the Looking Glass and the current The Trial of the Chicago Seven. He was also originally signed to play Queen singer Freddie Mercury in the film Bohemian Rhapsody but was given the boot after too many “creative differences” with members of the group.

The first sign that Cohen’s career was regaining traction was his 2018 political satire series Who is America?, which used many of Cohen’s old-standby methods. He interviewed real people – many of them politicians – in outrageous character to get them to confess to their misdeeds. The show was sharp, cutting and surprisingly funny, and received critical and popular acclaim.

Two years later and the world is even more fucked up. Cohen has decided to resurrect his most popular character to turn a microscope on America in the age of Trumpism, QAnon, white supremacy and the coronavirus.

Like the original Borat film, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm mocks the most controversial and misguided ideas of the people in the film by having Borat (and his daughter, in this film) enthusiastically agree with them. Also like the original, Borat 2 sometimes relies too much on stupidity and shock value. (I may have to boil my eyes after watching the Rudy Giuliani section – I will never be able to unsee that.) And like the first Borat, I think it would probably work better in a crowded theater – although of course at this moment in history that is pretty much impossible.

However, what can I say? I mostly liked Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, even more than the first one. Again, it’s not a great movie, but it’s mostly an enjoyable and thought-provoking one.

The slight story had Borat doing hard labor for 14 years in his native Kazakhstan because the original movie made the country a laughingstock. Finally the country’s premier decides to free Borat and send him back to the United States to deliver a beloved monkey to Mike Pence, in order to get into Donald Trump’s good graces. Of course, the premier’s plot is much more sinister than it originally appears.

Interestingly, Cohen and Borat have become so well known (both in real life and in the movie) that it is getting difficult for him to do his particular style of in-character prank interview. Therefore, much of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm falls on the shoulders of Borat’s slightly feral teenaged daughter Tutar, played by a little-known Bulgarian actress named Maria Bakalova. (Oddly, early press releases for the film gave the actress’ name as Irina Nowak, which appears to be a complete fabrication.)

Bakalova gets probably as much screen time as Cohen, and also gets to do every bit as much unhinged comedy as her more famous co-star. In fact, in many scenes, Cohen acquiesces to be essentially the straight man to his younger, slightly manic co-star. Bakalova gives a shot of energy – and a shot of estrogen – to the film that works surprisingly well. In fact, some of the later scenes border on… dare I say it?... heartfelt.

Much like the original, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is an episodic road trip across America, with Borat having brief interactions with people and showing their true colors by appearing to agree with them. There is not all that much of a story through line – there are eight screenplay credits for a movie that was probably mostly improvised??? – it is just Borat and his daughter’s adventures in the US.

Some of these are funny. Some of these are pointed. (It barely raises an eye when Borat crashes the CPAC – Conservative Political Action Conference – in full KKK regalia.) Some are sweet. (Holocaust survivor Judith Dim Evans teaches Borat that Jews are just people, too.) Some are scary. (Pretending to be the entertainment at a conservative protest, Borat gets the crowd singing along with some shockingly violent song.)

And by the way Rudy, that was no tuck.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is mostly funny, pointed satire in a time when the world needs more laughs. However, the most important part of Borat 2 is simply the final chyron message before the end credits: “Now vote.” So, go on. Now vote.
