✨fic rec friday✨
tag the fic that surprised you and / or a fic with a great twist and describe why it's so good. then tag some fellow associates to see what everyone else is reading. the broader the fandoms the better and don't be shy to rec older fics! make sure to tag #fic rec friday or @welcometololaland so that I can compile the masterlist.
thank you as always @heartstringsduet for the tag 💖
911: Lone Star
your first string by @strandnreyes
with sports aus you always know that there's going to be a big win towards the end, but ya never know what the author has in store for the readers first. and BOY let me tell you, did i read most of this in one sitting because i couldn't put it down? yes. did i also cry for pretty much the entirety of chapter 10? Very Yes. the little seeds that got dropped for what happens with TK in chapters 9&10 throughout the story are just wonderful (just like how it was in if you were a mythical thing which i held back from also reccing with everyone else haha) now i'm off to go finish the epilogue of this wonderful story <3
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Boomerangs and Rainbows by mindbending
now I love a good Zuko joins the gaang early fic but this begins with the twist of him joining them by being dead and haunting Sokka 😂. the wonderful shenanigans that make up this show continue in this story along with the quickly changing emotions from wanting to get rid of your enemy's soul as fast as possible to being devastated when you think he has finally departed (but has he really 👀)
open tag to anyone who would like to recommend some wonderful works of art <3

Why the fuck did you like those posts? You're a shitty fucking person if you think that omega or fem Luke is homophobic and then write omega Aemond like it's not feminization in the same way. People defended your fic from the discourse and those same authors that are being critiqued in those posts read and supported your work but I guess its a one way street for you. I'm glad they took screenshots of your shit and posted it on twitter
Oooo the girlies are talking about me! Twitter really sounds wild.
I personally don’t think authors who write fem!Luke are inherently harmful or homophobic. I enjoy many of those fanfics, and might write one, who knows! And I don't know that any of the OPs were calling out specific authors, but if they do in other posts that'd definitely not be cool. Writing fanfic is hard and I'm not here to hate on any author for doing something they enjoy and others love. General critique in a fandom does interest me once I get in deep with it, like I have with lucemond, but in the end it’s all fiction!
If anyone's wanting further explanation and an opinion from me on this matter of fem!Luke, buckle in! Lol.
Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion, but I casually read a lot of lucemond so at this point I have a lot of casual OpinionsTM on the pairing lol. Most of which I keep to myself, because we're all just here trying to find things we like, not get nasty about the things we don't.
But yeah, ngl my favorite omega/bottom/fem!Luke fics involve him having some personality beyond being submissive and salivating for Aemond-dick. I'll rec a few: omega!Luke a/b/o paint me in your colours is a great one, modern!au a losing game is getting SO good, and just started a very fem cam!boy Luke fic you can be the boss that's been fun so far!
Also, I admit it, I appreciate when I find fics where he isn’t constantly referred to like he’s a girl in all but pronouns.
There’s nothing wrong with trans characters of course, that can be a great thing to explore—but I think it’s concerning when I open up this tag on ao3 and the “Luke has a pussy” fics are dominating over anything else that's posted, don’t even tag him as trans, and almost always involve him acting very submissive and still looking like a prepubescent boy. And yes, fem!trans men exist, can be subs, and can look young!! Fuck gender roles! But hey, trans men can also look masculine, be doms, and look like adults too, and I have seen zero representation of any of that with Luke. Please somebody point me towards any that I've missed, would love to read!
(Maybe I’ll have to write a one-shot of Luke being trans!masc 🤔 seeing the lack of diversity in the a/b/o tag is what prompted D&S after all 😂)
So after enough of these flooding the ao3 tag, it starts to feel less like trans!rep and more like a trend we could analyze as a fandom whole. After all, if we’re just really cool and shooting for more gender diversity, it should make no less sense to make Aemond trans, you get me? Why are we so hung up on Luke as someone with a vagina?
Again, I don't as a blanket statement agree with the OPs of those posts in saying it's always sexist/homophobic to write Luke this way, or that there's inherent harm, but I did appreciate the discourse especially in the first post that addresses the trend as something to watch out for and think more critically about to avoid perpetuating stereotypes. Nothing wrong with portraying top/bottom and dom/sub couples, but it’s just as common with irl homosexual relationships for that dynamic to switch or even the one who through a 'hereto lens' seems more fem to be the top/dom. When a fandom as a whole is constantly putting a queer ship in gendered boxes (and the feminized one always seems to be very younger/an actual child, like Luke in canon), and also hates on any opposing portrayal, it’s just cause for reflection, ya know?
This ship is already problematic with one being underage and then also being portrayed by an underage actor—honestly when some of the more-nsfw art looks too much like a 12 year old next to an adult Aemond I really squick out—so I’m personally more cautious of how I portray his character just for that reason alone and appreciate when others are too.
Of course, I always stick with the “Don’t like don’t read” mantra of the olden days. Any harm in stereotyping/assigning heterosexual roles to lucemond is SO much less important than real-life stereotyping it's silly, and I’m personally never going to go hate on a story I don’t enjoy, just move on to something I do.
I'm also not going to pretend that I don't enjoy something! I literally just commented on a dead dove fic (derailed by theglitteringdark, the surprise CNC and babytrapping at the end really did it for me haha) with Luke as a trans!femboy because I enjoyed it. If you're looking through my likes, check ao3 too, okay? 😂
Last thing, but I have to add—writing someone unlikely as an omega is fun for me simply because I can then deconstruct the idea of it and, sort of like gender in real life, show that we are more than what is and isn’t between our legs. Idk if you’ve read D&S, but Aemond isn’t exactly a very feminine person in it. And this call-out is such funny timing, I have to spoil—in the very next chapter I'm working on, Aemond (an omega! gasp!) tops Luke! I've alluded to it in many previous chapters so some of you probably aren't surprised, lol.
Alright alright please cherry pick and tell me how I'm awful and wrong now 😂 I don't mind, like I said this is my opinion and it's all just fiction in the end.

There are probably a million other (and better) lists out there like this, but for Pride Month and my own documenting purposes, here are the LGBTQ+ "classics" I've come across over the past several years of reading. My taste tends toward older literature and slash, so most of them center on gay stories and are somewhat dated in terms of general societal attitudes, but I know there are many other classics out there that are just as good and hope to get around to them eventually.
To be clear, my definition of "classic" is how often they crop up in various "best of" lists I've found on the internet (including this one), and who recommends them, as well as how long they've been around. For example, many of the titles here are based on the renowned gay author Edmund White's list of "representative freaks," which I haven't yet read through myself. (His books are interesting too, although they contain a lot of difficult themes, and are not always fiction or centered on gay characters). They are not necessarily recommendations, as I struggled with some or found them not so memorable, but I wanted to take note of them nonetheless.
The rest I've listed are books that I've just happened across, usually at a library or through a friend. I haven't included the YA books because in my mind they exist in their own category (although I'm happy to rec them to anyone who cares). Most, if not all, are written by authors who identify as LGBTQ+. And lastly, they are all in English because it's my first language, although I'm sure there are more I haven't yet discovered that originated in different languages.
So here they are, in no particular order:
Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin - I loved the first book, although I haven't yet read the series that followed. It represents all sorts of queer lives and experiences in 1970/80s San Francisco, including a truly memorable trans character.
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters - a picaresque love story set in Victorian England. Not slash, although there is some gender-bending between the lesbian characters.
A Home at the End of the World by Michael Cunningham - The Hours was a much more popular book of his, but this was the first book to introduce me to the idea of a polyamorous/throuple situation, including two gay characters.
Memorial by Bryan Washington - a searching look at a modern interracial gay relationship and its strengths and flaws.
Gay Bar by Atherton Lin - not fiction, but a very engaging sociological read, about the history of gay bars and the author's present-day experience of them.
The Merry Spinster by Mallory Ortberg/Daniel M. Lavery - I read this at the beginning of my deliberately queer literature journey and liked the dark gender-swapped versions of fairy tales it contains. The author transitioned while writing this book, supposedly.
"Brokeback Mountain" by Annie Proulx - heartbreaking but good. Gods help me if I watch the film again.
City of Night by John Rechy - I didn't manage to finish this one because the style is very much of the Beatnik era, but I may attempt it again. It inspired the script for the film My Own Private Idaho (another queer classic).
"Howl" by Allen Ginsberg - also challenging to read unless you're in a stream-of-consciousness poetic mood. He does have mind-stopping imagery though, and was considered quite risqué for his time.
Burning Your Boats by Angela Carter - dark, sensual, borderline horror. Not all slash, but inclusive of different sexual orientations. I particularly like her retellings of fairy tales in this collection.
London Triptych by Jonathan Kemp - a breath-taking (and spicy) narrative that interweaves three different eras of gay culture.
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde - probably the best known classic of the 19th century, although I don't remember if it's overtly queer or just contains subtext. Haven't read it in years.
Maurice by E.M. Forster - honestly it's been ages since I read this one too. I love everything else by this gay author though, so I will probably reread it some day.
Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman - I tore right through reading this one after watching the film. A simple yet engaging coming-of- age story. I haven't read the sequel yet but will do so eventually.
The Spell by Alan Hollinghurst - I wasn't quite sure what to make of this one. Basically none of the characters are especially likable, although the story reveals interesting dynamics between them and their sexual escapades. I'm curious to read more by this author.
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides - this book rocked my world when I was a teenager. I've since come to question how representative it is of the intersex experience, seeing as it was written by a seemingly heterosexual cis man, but it was the first time I'd ever been introduced to such a rich and unusual character in literature, and she stayed with me for a long time after (re)reading.
As for the future, here are some titles I intend to read (among many more):
The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood (story that the musical Cabaret was based on)
Orlando by Virginia Woolf
Pageboy by Elliot Page
Nevada by Imogen Bonnie
Here's hoping I've managed to add a few of these to my personal list by the time Pride Month rolls around again. 🤠 And of course, if anyone else has books/stories to recommend, do share!

hello!!
10. a book that got you through something
hmmm. I'd say Radio Silence by Alice Oseman. I read it when I was having a crisis of sexuality and I was in a very bad depressive funk, cooped up in my college dorm room and there's a part towards the end when Aled is like. Literally in the same state and it was sort of cathartic to read about that for me. i mean i tend to be moved by books so very often that I'd say all of them help me get through the every day horrors yk but I guess Radio Silence was kinda special.
Oh! and the six of crows duology. i threw my back out and literally only managed to call people to help me out bc i was like. RHE CROWS CAN DO IT SO YOU CAN TOO AHFHDJDKD
29. your favourite YA novel
oh. OH MAN. okay ykw. i have many. but I'm gonna pick one that needs more attention and i think everyone should read and it's the Mirage series by Somaiya Daud
it's a series that's kind of a sci-fi-ification of the political history of the Amazigh people. the author is an Amazigh woman, and the writing is exquisite, and the plot is just. So Damn Good!! definitely worth a read!!
43. a book that you have read more than three times
I don't reread books too often because my attention span is shit. like once I know the story I keep jumping past. i am trying to change this tho bc like. I keep forgetting quotes and i think rereading is the way to go to remember them agdhdjdk
that being said the book I've reread the most is probably, Hyperbole and A Half by Allie Brosh.
it's just a tiny little graphic memoir and it's hilarious and it always makes me feel better! There's this quote in it that I love so much:
"Nobody can guarantee that it's going to be okay, but - and I don't know if this will be comforting to anyone else - the possibility exists that there's a piece of corn on a floor somewhere that will make you just as confused about why you were laughing as you have ever been about why you are depressed. And even if everything still seems like hopeless bullshit, maybe it's just pointless bullshit or weird bullshit or possibly not even bullshit. I don't know. But when you're concerned that the miserable, boring wasteland in front of you might stretch all the way into forever, not knowing feels strangely hope-like."
there's a second memoir too which is so much sadder because it's about the author's grief after losing her sister, but it was still worth a read!
book recs ask game!

Let's start this!
💫
🎀
🎉
💫 What is your favorite kind of comment/ feedback?
Honestly I like any kind of feedback. It is to note I'm an absolute compliment goblin, so I like to eat any compliments up like toast in the morning 😂
1. I LOVE the ones who get a bit technical (about my writing style, words used, metaphors, anything literature nerdy basically)
2. I absolutely adore being added to fic recs. Just the idea that someone enjoyed my work so much to want to recommend it to others just breaks my brain
3. I love it when people describe their experience with the fic as well. Like 'I held my breath' or 'I was giggling the whole time' love that.
4. I love overdramatic comments. Like "I fell to my knees I'm sobbing" followed by a keyboard smash djispsjosns like y'all are so cute pls continue being dramatic to me ily
5. TMI comments. Yas queen tell me the exact hyper you specific reason why you liked this and what it reminded you of from your life experience. I love to hear it
--------------
🎀 give yourself a compliment about your own writing!
The thing I like the most about my writing is how original my ideas are. I've always been really harsh on myself in the terms of 'quality'. I have this stubbornness that I won't just write a sweet little fic to make my heart beat faster and make me giddy. No, it has to be special, somehow, or else I don't feel like it's MY work. (I don't mean to be offensive to anyone by saying this, btw) I've given up on so many ideas and didn't even consider writing most ideas because they didn't feel me enough. And by me enough, I mean, having that shock factor. Knowing my readers will most likely not read anything alike it for, idk, months or years to come.
But the most magical thing about it is that, I don't just sit here and wonder "hmm what can I do that would be original" nah I just wait for it to happen. And when it does, my whole world catches color. My ideas are so ridiculous, so far fetched sometimes even I get shocked by them most of the time. And this originality is what gives me the most pride.
--------------
🎉 how often do you celebrate completing & posting a work? How often do you give yourself the credit/ validation that you seek from others when you post? (If you don't, you should!)
I'm my own worst critic, to be honest. I only really celebrate my own fics when I feel I have created something of high quality. Original, coherent, compelling, immersive, emotional, you name it. If it's well crafted and well inspired I will celebrate it without outside validation.
If it's not something I consider to be Oscar worthy and I feel I "wasn't at the top of my game" I just pat myself on the back for being productive and hope the next one will be of better quality.
--------
Thank you for participating!
Here's the list of questions used.

Reading your tumblr, and talking to a friend about her reading habits, is making me think it might be fun to read more self published erotic romance books. But every time I've tried to read a romance novel, I've found it kind of boring. But it sounds like it should be fun! My current reading habits are mostly SFF from mainstream publishers, literary queer fiction, a little YA, and lots of fanfic--but maybe that's largely because that's what I'm used to? I definitely don't have any pretensions about my tastes being "better" than anyone else's! The fic I tend to like is dark, explicit, usually short, and mostly f/f, a little f/m, and occasionally m/m (I think I just fall much more on the "insert myself into the scene" side of things, and I'm a bi woman). When I've tried romance novels, I've always wanted more sex and action, less monogamy, and wished the sex was more fucked up (dubcon, noncon, intense power imbalances, "hardcore" kink). When I've tried reading just straight up erotica I have a bit more luck...but I don't really care about the characters, which is what I understand erotic romance is supposed to be better at (and why I love pwp fic, I think!). I guess I'm just wondering--how do I go about finding more self pub stuff that I might like? Or am I maybe just not quite the audience?
--
The monogamy issue is going to be hard to solve outside of pure porn things where Mary Sue or Gary Stu fucks their way through a large cast. It annoys me too. What I really like are triad romance novels, and those are barely a thing. (Think OT3 "how they got together" fic. It's not super common in fandom but it's a lot more common than in original.)
I also find that original doesn't go as far into dubcon as I like, and when it does, it's not labeled... for the very simple reason that Amazon is the major way to sell your work, and Amazon bans rape erotica and anything that verges too close to it. Smashwords would allow it, but it's even harder to search and tends to end up as a repository of straight up rape porn as opposed to fandomy dubcon.
I read things that are more or less sold as "romance" and that have explicit sex, but I don't tend to buy a lot that's labeled as "erotic romance" (which is a specific niche).
My general advice for selfpub stuff is to try random keywords on amazon until you find an individual book you like and then see if you can find recs lists (e.g. on goodreads) that include it. Sometimes, Amazon's 'people also bought' is useful, though it depends. There are Facebook groups and such where people rec things also.
I read almost exclusively m/m in the selfpub space. The m/f sector is much bigger and more profitable, but I don't know much. F/F is less common but certainly out there.
I never finished this assassin/target f/f novel, but the part I read was pretty decent: Requiem for Immortals by Lee Winter. It wasn't a particularly dark take on those tropes from what I saw, but it was a lot less tame than some of the other f/f offerings out there.
For more action-y works, if you're interested in m/m, I might try Meghan Maslow's Starfig Investigations series or one of Jordan L Hawk's various series. There are people working in the original m/m space who are writing series mystery and urban fantasy rather than pure romance. Starfig Investigations isn't super dark, but it does start with one of them being a sex slave who's on loan to the other one for the duration of a case. The series sometimes covers stuff about his time as a slave, though the overall tone isn't very dark most of the time.
In the het space, I might search for things labeled as thrillers or maybe the darker end of shifter romance or motorcycle romance. But I don't really read heavily in any of that, so that's just a guess.
--
Basically, it's a treasure hunt, and you'll need to do a fair amount of investigation to figure out what's out there and how it's labeled.

Hi! It's tea anon❤️ As always it's totally alright! It's not your fault tumblr stinks sometimes!! Also it sounds like you've been very productive! Truthfully I am actually a bit behind on catching up with the series😂 I am a few chapters behind I think. It's an amazing series though!! ❤️❤️
Then I'll definitely have to try His Dark Materials! I love a little fantastical!!❤️ and that's good! It's always nice when the show actually manages to somewhat live up to the books😂😂
And the bookmarks are super cute!😂 I'm actually the one who got my parents onto the show and I think she actually finished season 6 before I did😂😂 Tommy would definitely judge my choices, especially the romantic ones😂 Na I don't think John or Arthur have picked up many books besides the ones they need in the betting shop. 😂 I'm sure they can read well enough but just don't have the attention span for most stories. Unlike poor Finn who no one ever bother to teach (don't worry finny! I'll do it, or at least read to him while aloud while messing up his hair😂😂) Off topic but have I ever mentioned that Finn's actually my favourite😂 like the seasons 3 or 4 idk who's over 18? Not season 5 and 6 though....I'll ignore those😂 I think it's partially because he's closer in age to me and I like the actor (yeah freckles!!)😂
And ohh book recs?! Humm there's so many I love! I think though one of my favourites is a series called "Stalking Jack the Ripper" by Kerri Maniscalco. The title kind of gives it away but it's about a girl who tries to hunt Jack the Ripper and find him during his killing spree. And there's a lot of good plot twists and I really like the character. I really enjoy like murder mysteries, especially the historical ones😂
But yeah! It was nice chatting with ya!❤️ Have a great day!!❤️❤️
Hey! Hope you’re having a lovely weekend honey ☺️
Don’t apologise for being behind - there’s no rush, it’s not going anywhere 😉 Just enjoy it at your own pace! And please, I’m so behind on everything that wasn’t me frantically scribbling the final few chapters so I have no right to judge anyone else! 🙈
I didn’t know Finn was your fav but that makes sense! Bless him, he’s too young for me 😂 And yes, the less said about s5&6 Finn, the better. Make better choices, Finn! 🤦🏼‍♀️
Thanks for the book rec - it sounds interesting so I shall have to add it to my (never ending 🤭) reading list! xx

Things I read/watch because I have had a few anons about it
I read a lot of sci-fi off to the side and it's mostly depressing stuff to torture myself with. My actual taste skews bittersweet/hopeful - intense agony/intense joy. I can't really explain it lol.
I really don't like the majority of recommendations for romance (The Land of the Beautiful Dead is perfect though) and I always find myself disappointed with their tone, and more damningly I really hate the YA genre (it's not to my taste sorry) and that's also where a lot of mean man/nice girl recs come from. It's why I tend to prefer ships such as Reylo or Knightfall because they've got an epic backdrop to them.
In terms of nonfiction I have too many books to count on topics of archaeology I'm always skirting between and I'm in the middle of trying to sort out Jung and Campbell for a more serious masterpost I'm working on.
In terms of watching things, I'm going to rewatch Emma. (2020) with Best Mate after I finish the next update of Skimming Eye since she hasn't seen it, and then rewatch Ghost in the Shell (1995) to do a Jung write-up like I promised.
I would take recommendations on sci-fi/horror or particularly existentially nauseating works, but it's also really hard to get right and I think part of the fun for me is searching for stuff to torture myself with for a few hours.
Sorry if I come off curmudgeonly about recommendations, but unless it's something truly magnificent that manages to hit the very specific symbolic reincarnation/symbolic symmetry of a romance as the wound of the heart of the story redeemed by the final symbolic or literal reincarnation of the couple in question archetype, it's probably hard to get me into it. Unless it's Southern Gothic. Then I'll be into it.
I also noticed of the asks I've received with different recommendations (not just the last two but historically) were geared in the anime/manga direction, so I can see this is coming from the fact that my blog is often on the topic of R/WBY, but most of the same rules about what I'm interested in apply here, it doesn't really change for manga/anime. (Typed anima because I am on that Jung shit so much). I'm not an otaku or someone into manga/anime by definition, just where it crosses over with my interests I enjoy it. I'm sorry to disappoint. (I grew up an RVB fan before R/WBY. Lol).
Now, the topic of 'wholesomeness' is a different thing, and if anyone's curious I can expand, but I don't want to be rude. Lol

(shannon game song plays as I make my way to the stage) Ladies and gentlemen, this is a first in the history of the shannon game! Shannon has been 100% correct for two consecutive weeks. A round of applause for her 👏👏👏 Unfortunately for her, the difficulty will increase over the weeks (just because I want to make sure she knows me as much as I think she does)
There are so many things I want to say about them (suzy & krystal) that I don't know where to start >3< If I had to recommend some songs, I'd give you this list (sorry if you already listened to some of them):
touch, love song, I caught ya, breathe, if I were a boy (miss a)
yes no maybe, satellite, holiday, sleeplessness (suzy)
love, airplane, shadow, butterfly, dracula, rude love, when i'm alone (f(x))
As for their acting career, I haven't had the time to watch all their dramas/movies so I won't give any recs because I'm so far behind and need to catch up. I think the common factor between them is they both are dorks and they make me smile whenever I feel sad. I think of them as my safe place. I'd also recommend any running man episode suzy was on because she was super funny in those :D
YES I DID LISTEN TO BE MINE BECAUSE OF YOU <3 I think we have similar taste in music so I trust you :) Don't worry about giving too many song recs. I relate to that a lot! I can't give just some songs, I always end up sending a whole book and then I wonder why I don't hear from anyone after that lol I'll make sure to give the songs a listen and let you know what I think about them ^^
You are absolutely 100% correct about all your answers 👍 Some of my fave rv songs are (but aren't limited to) bamboleo, something kinda crazy, love is the way, sunny side up, rbb, butterflies 💞 I now realise I'm an open book. You know every single thing about me... You should definitely think about being a detective as a career option. I'd most definitely go ask for your help if you decided to do it ;)
Well now it's time for the difficulty to increase a little (just a little though)
Question #7: What is my favourite non-ghibli animated movie? (it's a very specific french movie, i'm sure you haven't heard of it so let's go with disney/pixar for this question)
Question #8: What is my favourite elo song? Now that I have listened to most of his discography, I can ask you this question (you can give out several answers because it's possible that there are some songs i still haven't listened to)
Question #9: Can you list some of my favourite 2nd gen girl groups? (4 to 5 groups is enough)
That concludes today's episode of TSG (the shannon game for those who didn't follow). Let's hope Shannon continues with her winning streak. I'm cheering you on! You can do it Shannon.
from 🐘💌 anon
hiiiiii !!! 🥰 thank you for the applause though i wouldn't get too carried away i think this round is going to be the start of my downfall if the questions are harder than last time :(
oo i have heard a few of these !! i really like the miss a colors album but i wasn’t familiar with the other songs! breathe was really fun though i liked that one! also yes no maybe is really good i haven’t listened to it in a while though! i did listen to satellite when it came out but i didn’t like it that much :( i just listened to all of the f(x) songs and i think i have heard a couple before like a really long time ago so i don’t really remember them but they’re all so good!!! i just never really got into them :( but they had some really great songs!! yeah i haven’t seen many of their dramas either but i enjoyed while you were sleeping and krystal was in prison playbook which is one of my favourite dramas of all time!! but the way you talk about them is so sweet :( they’re so lucky to have someone like you supporting them!! and i'm glad they make you so happy💗
ooo i can’t believe i was right about those!! but i forgot about sunny side up! thats one of my favourites too <3 but you really weren’t kidding about these getting harder 😭😭
literally the only french film i know of is amélie so if it isn’t that i have no idea! as for favourite disney/pixar movie i think this is finally something i don’t know… there’s just so many films to choose from maybe if you gave me a little hint or something i could take a guess but i really have no idea what it could be :( this is the question that has broken me </3
the fact you listened to elo enough to have a favourite song of his i’m 🥺😭 i’m not sure if you will have listened to his latest album yet?? so i’m not sure if it would be any of those.. (maybe falling dreams if you have listened to it though?) but i think maybe you would like rose? you said we have similar music taste so if i just name some of my favourites then hopefully at least one of them will be right... right? so maybe day n night or angel.. or perhaps osaka, melt or lip service. i don't wanna guess too many or that might be cheating so if its none of these maybe tell me which album your favourite song is on and then i can try guessing again asjdhakjsd
i would guess f(x) and miss a of course though those are probably too obvious so you might not count them... so i will also guess snsd (i feel like that has to be one right? everyone loves girls gen) maybe wonder girls?? or after school? i feel like i’m just naming very obvious or popular groups but i’m not sure! i’m bad at knowing what gen every group is too so hopefully these are 2nd gen asjdhjksd
those were some very tough questions i think my perfect score streak definitely ends here! but hopefully this doesn’t mean i’m eliminated or anything because the game is a lot of fun!! 💓💞

This if gonna be LONG so apologies in advance
Abt the dragon ages:
I'd rec playing them in order for it to make most sense
It doesn't use the renegade/paragon system like me used; instead they played around with some different... Stuff. Origins simply gave you multiple dialogue choices in npc convos, 2 introduced dialogue tags that denoted your character's emotional intent: aggressive/direct, humorous/sarcastic, diplomatic/helpful (or smth like that. It wasn't always employed well tbh); and inquisition added even more on to that approach, so much so that they introduced perks your character could pick up to unlock additional conversational value (like if you had like. An underworld perk, you could inquire abt criminal activity or something)
There's no sexism in thedas (world where dragon age is set) except there is! Origins is a 2009 game and it shows
Idk how it is with mass effect but quite a lot of the worldbuilding and lore is found in codex entries
Where me had commander shepard, dragon age played around with the game protag: in origins your choice in race and class open up different 'origins' for your character (there's a total of 6 of those. Well 7 if we count the expansion one but i don't); with dragon age 2 they tried the mass effect approach: the titular character is hawke, they're a human, you just choose their gender and class and the pain train starts; in inquisition they went back to the origins concept and you could choose race, gender, class and voice.
The combat is different from me and it might take some getting used to as it relies on pausing combat to redirect characters and such
Bigger party! You can take 3 companions with you. You can take 4 in origins and 2 by including the dog if you mod it right
There's a romance system like in mass effect. I do hate 2 for introducing the rivalmance system. The wiki is your friend 😔
WHERE'S THAT SECOND MOON BIOWARE. WHERE'D IT RUN OFF TO.
beware the fade portion in origins. Maybe the deep roads too. Also beware the fucking hinterlands in inquisition
Speaking of maps/zones: dragon age 2 had rushed development and so a lot of the zones were just. A handful of maps that they re-used, positioned differently, with different assets and stuff like that. It WILL feel unsatisfying, but what can ya do 😔
Dragon age WANTS to play at grey morality... But it doesn't do so successfully.
You will like some characters. You might even love some. You might fall in love with this world and its stories like i did. I also want to smash this series like a pinata. It WILL make you angry, so be prepared for that (though i suppose the mass effect ending already prepped you for that?)
Make lots of saves and consult the wiki liberally!
anon i'm gonna be real with you, u had me at 'you can include the dog in your party'. 5 stars 10/10 game of all time if true.
i'm glad to hear it's similar but also different from mass effect, worldbuilding and lore being found in the codex is definitely a mass effect thing too (and i loved reading every entry). anything that fleshes out the world i'm playing in is a huge plus in my book.
honestly, after years of playing wow, skyrim and the fallout series i feel like i'm (hopefully) prepared for the epic highs and lows of dragon age. when exactly i’ll get around to it is anyone’s guess but i will definitely keep ur advice in mind.

G and S for the ask game!
Hello bee sweetheart! Thank you so much for the ask, I've answered G here (including a sneaky peek at my unhinged Scrivener corkboard) so will go with S!
S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?
Ooh this is an interesting one isn't it? Because tropes are the backbone of the fandom experience in many ways, and one of the things I love about fandom is how authors interpret tropes and shape them around their writing.
When I first started writing I would have said I love all tropes but over the past few years (pandemic how are ya) I've become much less resilient in general and am much more careful about what I read.
I tend not to read tags so most of the fics I read are based on recs, or by following AO3 bookmarks, or by coming across a fabulous summary. But if all things were equal and I were presented with a list of tags and told to choose, I think the main tropes that immediately pique my interest and will get me clicking into a fic are probably the following few. I'll also link a few fics I love and a few on my MFL.
Multiverse/ time travel: It's a classic but In the Hand is just such a beautiful, moving example of the trope (see also: Dwelling and Far From the Tree by the same author!). From my MFL we have Turning Leaves by @kbrick (who wrote Running Mate which I really enjoyed -political fics hell yeah) and In Every Universe by the amazing @skeptiquewrites. And I tried it in miniature in Our Little Life but am also writing my own longfic at the moment - this is probably the one I'm most nervous about, as it's a complicated trope.
Draco in the Muggle world: An eternal favourite of mine! Here's the Pencil is my ultimate comfort-read in the trope and I've returned to it so many times over the years. Some highly-recced fics from my MFL are Knead by @jovialobservationanchor and Take a Chance on Me by @mintamintathings. I worked out my own obsession with this trope in Modern Love.
Politics!!!! Absolutely obsessed with political fics but I don't come across them as often as I do with other tropes, so if anyone has any recs please hit me up. My favourite is probably We Are Young by Femme, or the magnificent By the Grace by @letteredlettered. And from my MFL I am very excited by When Times are Dire by @aibidil. I've touched on politics in Modern Love, but not in any meaningful way, so this is definitely a trope for future Tacky and I have something in the works.
Case fic/Auror fic: It's a classic for a reason! I have read both The Boy Who Only Lived Twice by @letteredlettered and What We Pretend We Can't See by @gyzym many, many times, and they still feel just as fresh and complex and interesting as they ever did. From my MFL, I am itching to get at And I looked, and behold-! by @dwell-the-brave.
All this being said I will read anything if it's good! But if I really have to pick, these are the tropes that will always make me prick my little ficcy ears up.
Writer ask game here.

I hope this isnt strange, but do u have any etn fanfic recommendations? Been trying to read more hehe and you seem p active here in the fandom so I figured u might know of the good ones that are out there. Dont really care about format, like it could be either here on tumblr or on something else like ao3 idc. I like seasons 2 3 and 4 and dont have any triggers or whatever so I'm pretty much good with whatever you think deserves a read!! love your blog by the way, also if you wanted to recommend any other blogs to also follow that would be pretty nice, no pressure tho. Thanks in advance 😊
this isn't strange at all! i'm super honored to have someone ask me for recommendations on anything, so thanks so much for this ask! love engaging with people so, ya know! i'll go ahead and start with blogs to follow because that'll be a nice start to this, and then the fanfiction recs will be under read more.
some etn blogs to follow are :
@escapethenightcrack : i think this blog is a given! before i even started this blog, this one has always been floating around. there's all kinds of different content out there from varying seasons. not to mention the person running the blog is super nice and open to having conversations about the characters! highly recommend them for anyone looking for etn blogs to follow. you always get what you come for and they occasionally post questions you can respond to! fun time overall and i admire them a lot. please go check them out and follow if you haven't already! <3
@poeticpains : a newer blog on the scene but one of my favorites already, personally. they make a variety of things from embroidery to playlists which you don't often see in this fandom ; so following them is worth it because you never know what art form you might get for etn! and thanks to the abundance of reblogs, this fan blog helps you find other accounts if you haven't seen them already. overall a new blog that kinda has it's own unique style! they also reblog quotes and tag etn characters which i personally really enjoy and, again, haven't really seen done before. the person running it is also someone i highly respect! so yeah, go follow!
just realized that me singing praise to every blog tagged could get very tiring to read, so lemme just. finish up recommending blogs without all the theatrics. but every single one im @-ing deserves praise and they all post some intriguing etn content that either makes you laugh, makes you think, is simply just fanart/writing, or they have some sort of creative ideas for it they wish to talk about! and all of those things are cool to see! ahem so : @fishyspider, @thatotherothersideblog, @lydiais-dead, @elfie-loves-you, @remaking-machine , and @warning-rune !
obviously there's more blogs out there but these are the ones i would personally recommend for branching out. you'll probably find more blogs from these ones alone! for starters, i will immediately say that i have my own ao3 account! WitchyTwitchy! and anything in my bookmarks is highly, highly recommended. there's also my stories which are a tad old, honestly, but they're not the worst ever! but besides that, let's get into the nitty gritty fanfic recommendations!
then they kill you ( and then they love you again ) - the moment you asked for fic recs for etn, this was actually the first fic i thought of. it's a s4 fic that focuses heavily on rosanna and the trials she endures mentally in purgatory. this is a work that has stuck with me since it's original posting and always puts me in this weird grief-stricken mood due to how vivid ro's emotions are. the format could be a bit confusing to read given the long paragraphs and lack of dialogue marks ( " ) but since you don't mind that, i highly recommend! whenever i want to get in my s4 feels or even get inspired to write something heartwrenching, this is the fic i always go to.
how the story goes - another s4 fic that's just a nice, quick read. it mainly follows destorm and how his dynamic with alex changed over the course of the season, while adding a layer of depth to it. though this isn't a big fave of mine, i adore it nonetheless and believe it's one of the few etn fics that focus on alex/destorm in that season anyway, so! but that leads me to the next fic rec, which is from the very same author who wrote this -
love, and how to kick it - honestly, this is one of the first fics i ever read in the etn tag ever and it was a pretty solid introduction. if you're a fan of soulmate aus and hopeless situations, this one is for you! it's s3 and the main character is nikita, who goes through the story torn between her love for manny vs her soulmate-love for mat. which is handled extremely well and pulls at your heart, just how nikita's being tugged around by hers. there's some good ro/mat moments as well! genuinely a good fic all around and makes you want to see more soulmate aus in etn in the same vein as this!
if i fall - a s3 fic that's an au, but instead of changing the outcome of a death ( as you typically see ) it's making up a new challenge entirely and forcing the final five to endure it! this one is a refreshing fic to me and elaborates on dynamics in the current setting of the show in a very intriguing way. there's angst galore and everyone who has to do the challenge has thoughts that feel extremely in character for them to have, causing you to feel awful and torn between both teams. it's a decently long read, which the fandom definitely needs more of, so that's a plus as well! there isn't much more to say without spoiling it, but the creativity taken and the twists and turns are excellent. also, fyi, if you want to read more etn fics, this person is chalk full of them on their ao3 account! so check them out in general.
right down to the second ( i can feel my breath unfold ) - another s3 fic ( sorry! they just have the most fics ) but this time it's a nicely wrapped up 'how the final six can potentially live' au. the main reason im placing this down is because of how recent it is in the fandom, and i think it's very important to support works that have been posted recently. especially since writers ( and editors ) are the only ones keeping this fandom afloat! however, besides that, this fic is one of the better ones ive seen recently. i was not expecting the plot nor the friendship development this fic expertly dishes out. you can tell they really adored each member of the final six, and you'd be surprised how rare that is in the fandom. it's heartwarming and follows matthew caring deeply for everyone there and it deals with amazing trauma in the second work. definitely recommend
okay! to be brutally honest, besides the fics listed here and the fics you can find in my bookmarks, i can't really think of any other fanfics to recommend you? this took a while to come out, seeing as i looked through the ao3 tag a couple times and tried to pick my favorite ones. or the ones off the top of my head! while the fics here isn't a lot, every author on this list has at least one more etn work attached to them ; so feel free to gather more that way! i really hope this helped, and im beyond honored to be asked for fic and blog recs! makes me feel like im doing something in the fandom, if that makes sense? either way, thanks so much for this ask and for enjoying my blog ---- feel free to message/ask me things at any time! this was fun 🧡

Hey do you know any Fantasy YA Jewish authors? Cause I only know SJM and CClare and it makes me... furious?
They enbody almost every bad stereotype antisemites believe against us. Like they don't care about their audience (literal children!), even bully kids, have incest and abuse fetishes, romanticize awful things and only care about milking their series and making money because they're greedy. Anytime the reading group I'm in brings them up and I criticize these things, there's always the asshole that says "they're jewish what did you expect? Ahah!" (The worst part is that she is Jewish too! She just thinks it's funny? And I don't get it?).
I know lots of Jewish authors - YA, NA, A - but not for Fantasy YA specifically because I only recentry got into it. And when I ask around people always recommend SJM and CC as if they're the only Jewish authors in the genre.
Is there such a thing as bad irl representation? Cause I promise that most Jewish people are NOT like them.
It makes me furious that they are known as THE Jewish authors for Fantasy YA when they are THE WORST people :/
hmm i don’t know any off the top of my head, unfortunately (i don’t read much YA these days), but this list has a variety of genres for YA books with Jewish protagonists, though i’m not sure if every book is #ownvoices. OH WAIT have you read any books by Rena Rossner? she’s Jewish and writes #ownvoices books, such as this one! and this list mentions The Fever King by Victoria Lee features a Jewish protagonist, but, again, i’m not sure if the author is. does anyone else have any recs to share?

*busts through the door like I'm the Kool-Aid man* BONJOUR FUCKERS I'M BACK!!! It is I, the Theatrical Gay Anon™! I hope you're ready to endure my endless babbling for a bit cuz I've got lots to say holy shit. Consider this part 1 of like, 1000 cuz I think Tumblr got rid of the submissions feature. I apologize in advance for the spam hehe.
Okay, with that out of the way. Ms. Yehet-Me-Up, may I call you Sarah? Sarah, what the fuck!? I can't even rn. I I give you a simple suggestion, no expectations behind it. I say "Hey, don't you think it'd be cool if Zitao was in the Exodus Mall universe?" to which you said "Yeah, that'd be neat, I might do that. Perhaps make him work at an Irish pub or something" and then I flip out with gratitude and excitement thinking you're gonna do like, a DRABBLE. 500 words at MOST -Theatrical Gay Anon
Imagine my SHOCK, my STUPEFACTION, upon realizing that you wrote OVER TEN THOUSAND WORDS about Huang Zitao aka the wind beneath my wings, the rain to my drought, the corny joke to my Junmyeon. And not only that! But you did this A MONTH AGO. I could've been reading this for so long and I had no idea! How foolish am I? I can't believe you wrote all of this based off of a silly little suggestion I made. I feel like bowing over how not worthy I am Wayne's World style -Theatrical Gay Anon
NOW IN REGARDS TO THE CONTENT OF THIS MASTERPIECE OH MY GOD WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN!? I am floored by your preeminence. First things first, the title? Perfect. Full disclosure, I suck at titles. I've been writing for over a decade now and I'm still shit with titles. It's so hard to come up with just a few words to encapsulate everything you wrote but you do it SO WELL. The moodboard? Amazing. I've always loved that picture of Zitao and it fits so well with the pub setting -Theatrical Gay Anon
I'm afraid you've written "Fractions of Tomorrow" so well that I don't see there being a need for anyone to write anything else...ever. Stories? CANCELED. Poetry? CANCELED. Biographies? CANCELED. It's all over folks. Sarah has written The Best Thing Ever. We've peaked as a society. After I finish writing these asks I'm gonna become a hermit in the woods and make friends with all of the woodland creatures that inhabit it. -Theatrical Gay Anon
But seriously though, I love absolutely everything about this story. As a Zitao fan, I'm used to getting breadcrumbs. Not a lot of ppl write fics about him. I can count on one hand how many long fics of his you can find on Tumblr. But THIS?? This was no breadcrumb, this was a whole fucking bakery. And it all appeals to me so much oh my god? The sappiness of it all, the flowery prose, the rebellious rejection of cynicism, it's all so beautiful I want to marry it. -Theatrical Gay Anon
If I discussed all of the sentences in this fic that made me giggle with joy and kick my feet around I'd be here all day so keep in mind this is just a FRACTION of the ones I loved but I couldn't go without mentioning at least some of them so here we go. "It’s not his first time here, but it’s his first time paying attention" SHUT UP this line is go good it's so simple yet so nuanced I adore it. Seriously, why hasn't anyone hired you to write a screenplay? -Theatrical Gay Anon
"He wonders if you ironed the collar of your shirt to be that precise or if you simply move through the world without acquiring any wrinkles" God, this line is so CUTE it's DISGUSTING he's fond of the reader's un-wrinkled clothes that's such a specific thing to like and is totally the type of thing I've done with the ppl I've crushed on throughout my life. -Theatrical Gay Anon
"‘Zitao,’ he says finally. ‘Cute.’ You say" this is such a little thing but I love that you included his full name in this. I love his full name so much it sounds really pretty. Whenever I hear him refer to himself as "Huang Zitao" in interviews my heart soars. Hearing him speak Mandarin in general is a delight as well. It's an audibly gorgeous language and any racist who says otherwise can EAT MY ENTIRE ASS -Theatrical Gay Anon
"For someone who’s been in love for as long as you can remember she fights awfully hard against Baekhyun’s romantic nature" DEAR GOD I LOVE THESE TWO! I love these movie loving lovesick fools. I love that everyone in the world knows they love each other except them. I love seeing bits and pieces of their story throughout this written universe. I can't wait to see it all come together in Baekhyun's Exodus Mall fic. It's gonna be GLORIOUS -Theatrical Gay Anon
Also! I know you enjoyed my song recs that I thought fit perfectly with All Our Broken Places so here are some for when the Baek x Hitchcock fic drops. I know it's not done yet but I just *know* what it's gonna be like I can feel it in my bones. "Sidekick" by Walk the Moon and "Tongue Tied" by Grouplove. As for Fractions of Tomorrow I knew right away what songs I'd pick. "Dreams" by The Cranberries, "Jumpstarted" by Jukebox the Ghost and "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey -Theatrical Gay Anon
Gosh, this fic filled me with so much energy and joy I feel like a toddler on caffeine. But I really should sleep now though. It's gotten so late that I can see the sunrise peaking up sdksdksl. I'll see ya soon! I will be spamming you with more compliments about this fic once I wake up though! - Theatrical Gay Anon
Hi! I'm back. Okay, now where was I? Oh yeah, I was talking about some of my favorite lines from the story. "‘Hey man, how’s it going?’ Baekhyun reaches out and does a complex handshake with the man before you. ‘Oh, you know. Just working at the salt mines,’ Tao says with a laugh." I LOVE that you made Baek the one Zitao was close with. I miss the beef brothers so much. I'll never forgive SM for what they did to OT12. They were all such good friends 😔 -Theatrical Gay Anon
"‘I’m not sure.’ For a flash Tao’s eyes linger on you once more. ‘I think it would depend on the person.’ And then the bastard goes and winks at you." GOD, HE WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS! HE'S SUCH A SHAMELESS FLIRT I HATE HIM *narrator voice* This was of course a huge a lie, he in fact loved Zitao immensely -Theatrical Gay Anon
"‘Sweetheart, I’m everyone’s type.’" You've captured Zitao's unlimited confidence so well and that makes me really happy. It's one of my favorite things about him. The man truly loves himself and I think that's awesome -Theatrical Gay Anon
"Tao looks at you through his lashes, bending close enough that you can feel his breath on your lips when he speaks. ‘Words are just the appetizer, darling. I prefer to have an entire feast.’ 'Any other questions or can I grab your orders?’" ASDKDSDSL SO YOU'RE JUST GONNA SAY THAT PANTY DROPPER LINE AND GO BACK TO BUSINESS AS USUAL ZITAO???? HUH??? IS THAT WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO??? -Theatrical Gay Anon
"‘Oh, nothing.’ He looks like the cat that caught the canary. ‘I just love being right.’" Something I love about EXO fic writers (myself included lol) is that despite all of the different ways they'll write the other members, there is one member who is always written the same and that's Baekhyun. He will always be written as a cheeky little shit cuz he *is* a cheeky little shit. That's just who he is. Messing with ppl is a favorite past time of his. -Theatrical Gay Anon
"'So, love, huh? There’s not some girlfriend or boyfriend of yours waiting for you at home?’" Thank you for not being heteronormative with the "are you dating someone?" convo. I know it might not seem like much but I really appreciate it. -Theatrical Gay Anon
"The beginning of love is always a lightning bolt. If that’s all it ever is you never have to deal with being knocked on your ass by the resulting thunderstorm" OOF, this one got me. So very true. The beginning of love is so scary! -Theatrical Gay Anon
"I could argue that anarchy still is love. Love of your beliefs and love of a person or a place or a thing so much that you’re willing to fight for it" OKAY BUT PASSIONATE LEATHER JACKET WEARING ANARCHIST ZITAO IN A ROCK BAND IS SUCH AN ATTRACTIVE CONCEPT!!! There's nothing sexier than a bad boi that will hate capitalism with you! He'd probably be the one to give ppl rides to protests and stuff I LOVE IT -Theatrical Gay Anon
"If we say love is a feeling, who’s to say that we aren’t in love? If we decide it’s an action then which one is it? A kiss or a commitment or - maybe it’s nothing more complicated than putting words to the way I feel when you look at me?" Listen I don't mean to be dramatic or anything (wait, who am I kidding? I'm literally the Theatrical Gay Anon being dramatic is like my Thing) but if a guy ever said that to me my trans boi pussy would be open for business IMMEDIATELY
Alright, so, uh Final Thoughts. This may be my new favorite work of yours, and no it's not just cuz it's got my ultimate bias in it lmao. This year has been so shitty and it's made my depression + anxiety reach the highest possible levels but reading this, this love story filled with hope and certainty despite not knowing what the future will hold for them, made this year seem easier to cope with. Thank you so much for making this, it means the world to me. -Theatrical Gay Anon
ALRIGHT, LAST ASK AND THEN I'LL SHUT UP I PROMISE but I personally headcanon that Double Shot + Zitao stayed together till the very end. They didn't get married cuz they hate formalities but they got matching tattoos and even when they're old and grey you can still them clear as day on their wrists. When they're asked how they met no one believes their answer lol. And when Double Shot died of old age before Zitao he would sing her favorite song by her grave every Saturday -Theatrical Gay Anon
OKAY SO I know I said I was done and I know I've already sent in like, 30 bajillion asks but I'm curious does Yifan or Luhan also work at the Irish pub?? Or do they work somewhere else in the mall? Inquiring minds want to know -Theatrical Gay Anon
Tumblr media
When I tell you this made my entire month (when you sent it weeks ago, I’ve been hanging onto these because they seriously bring me SO much joy holy crap) I am not remotely kidding j;oaisjdflkasdjfa
I am absolutely going to put on these song recs while I work on the next chapter!
a;osdfjlaksdfjasl the fact that you stayed up late to read this warms my heart so much. It reminds me of all the times I stayed up til the ass crack of dawn reading fanfics because I simply could NOT stop reading, so the fact that you enjoyed this like that makes me helllllaaaa emo 🥰
I just??? 2020 was indeed such a long year and affected my energy and creativity and honestly don’t really remember writing this hahaha. I kind of go into a fugue state with these longer fics and they just EMERGE. So to see you reflecting back some of what I wrote allows me to enjoy the process so much more. Makes writing and tumblr fun and I seriously wish everyone writing and creating could have someone as passionate and thoughtful and hilarious as you hyping them up 🌟 it honestly feels like a GIFT and I will absolutely keep writing this series and hoping to be worthy of it 😘
We will definitely get to see more of these two in the finale fic! I got into EXO after Tao, Yifan, and Luhan left so I’m not quite as familar with their personalities, but I could definitely see Yifan working at the US Bank haha. Business suit by day and partying/flirting by night. As for Luhan I feel like he’d work somewhere like the bookstore or the music store?? somewhere quieter and more contemplative.
Thank you again for sending this and for being you <3 I hope 2021 is a wonderful year for you and that you know how AMAZING you are 💖💖💖💖💖
