Writing snippet!!

This is from my current wip(super first draft!!) place holder title "A tragedy in five parts", it's a romantasy about a young woman watching her brother become a kind of "chosen one" and losing himself. As he begins to twist in on himself, she starts some machinations of her own along side members of his inner circle who are finding their faith in him shaken.

To Sofia the carriage wheels sounded like the rattle of prisoner chains. Back straight, she’d wedged herself into a corner. With only two other occupants there was plenty of room, but she didn’t dare let herself unravel. Hands clasped on top of the sturdy case on her knees, she kept her eyes trained down and out the window. When the man and woman made polite conversation together she did not join. Her hat needed adjusting, and the pins dug into the base of her horns but she did not move.

The carriage rhythm changed, the road turned from rough gravel to patch worked flagstones. There had been the occasional building, she’d been told, that lined the mountain road. But they had long since burned down, leaving only rotting, flame blackened skeletons. In the distance Sofia could see an army worth of tents, dark as they banked the forest edge, and she wondered how easy they would be to spot when it snowed. If it snowed. Perhaps her brother’s will extended to sky itself.

Was, because whatever was the fallen body below her was, at least not dead but at the very least, unlikely to get back up again. Reports say the sound of a church bell was heard before the explosion happened. the lady hadn't even bothered to open her eyes at all during the whole confrontation. Even dust was afraid to cling to the edges of her dress.

Everything this man says about his future confuses me more but I’m genuinely so unsure how to read that rb comment. Because there is clearly a fondness of the team and a belief that he can do well in those cars. But on the other hand, the comment did come across to me as like “it would be nice… but”, like yes it would be a sort of romantic, full circle moment but maybe not what’s best for him (in his thinking)

and this is exactly what he wants!!! known liar daniel ricciardo strikes again, sowing confusion in the hearts and minds of the general public!!!

he wants people lost and perplexed when it comes to his next move cause it's advantageous for him from a negotiating standpoint to do so!!! if he's talking to 'pretty much everyone', then whoever he DOES allow to capture his heart and ass (in their reserve seat) better fucking pay up cause he's got 6 other options waiting in the wings to do the same if they won't (or at least he wants them to believe that 👀)

hopping on the megan thought train (bc my beloved) and begging for ur thoughts! what do you think she knew abt the eddie and steve situation in the beginning? obviously something abt eddie i gather, after her reassuring steve that ‘he’ll be okay’ on their wedding night, but i’m super curious about her feelings and thoughts and what she pieced together along the way, especially bc steve didn’t even know abt his own feelings for most of their marriage. (also desperate 2 know about her thoughts were when he came out to her, obviously accepting ((which is something i just adore abt megan)), but i wanna know what was happening in her brain) and ALSO about what she thought when she found out they got together in the end!! truly i’ve been rotating this universe in my brain since i read the first fic and megan has been so intriguing to me since she was introduced!!

WOW YES WHAT A GREAT TRAIN IT IS ALL ABOARD CHOO CHOO ETC!!

@greenlikethesea and I basically felt from the start that Megan like, very much clocked that Eddie was in love with Steve more or less by the third time she saw them interacting. Maybe by virtue of not being part of the group, of not having those years of “oh, that’s just Eddie lol” she can kind of see how 2+2=4 when it comes to all the little ways Eddie being JUST Eddie and Eddie being JUST Eddie at STEVE are very different. But all very much without intent, without the expectation of any kind of return. Hence her having a lot of compassion for him, at the wedding, knowing that it must’ve been hard for him to be there at all.

Nothing in Steve’s behavior towards Eddie necessarily pinged for her before they got married or for those first several years, also because while open-minded and lovely and progressive in a lot of ways, Megan also was kind of a sheltered girl and did not really conceptualize of additional options beyond Gay and Straight. She knew Steve wasn’t gay, therefore he must be straight, therefore Eddie’s feelings could not ever be reciprocated, poor guy. But maybe her first introduction to the reality beyond the concept is through their friendship with Robin, and the conversations she has with Robin maybe about a bi woman Robin is dating probably makes the whole concept of bisexuality less theoretical. So when Steve comes out to her it’s less to grapple with, and since a part of their conversation is very much “I don’t want to be seeing or sleeping with anyone else, this is just a part of me that I think you should know about,” she’s kind of like. Able to feel that this doesn’t really change much and, I say with love, is something she can kind of accept and a little bit ignore in their day to day life. And maybe it’s not too much of a surprise in some ways? It at least does not fundamentally rewrite her understanding of her husband, there are just some things that are like “okay, this makes sense.”

She also trusts Steve totally, has never worried about his faithfulness (Steve “wifeguy” Harrington would simply never), but Eddie fucked off to California shortly after their wedding and when he comes back a few years later, he’s a little different, Steve’s a little different about him, things are just different. And while Steve and Eddie certainly stayed in touch during the California years and he talked about Eddie to Megan not infrequently, it is another thing to see them together again, especially with the understanding of Steve that she has now. And she’s still not worried, she still doesn’t think Steve would be unfaithful, but it’s different and she doesn’t know how to ask about it. While she could clock Eddie’s feelings immediately, that was assisted by the fact that she didn’t know him that well. She knows Steve VERY well, and his own recognition of his attraction to Eddie and all the things beyond that comes on so slow (years!!! Years and years!!!) that it’s much harder for her to read that so clearly. When you see someone every day changes to their behavior or appearance come on so slowly that you often don’t recognize them at all until something makes you take notice all at once. I don’t want to use the frog in boiling water comparison here but damn if that isn’t the only think I can think to compare it to right now.

We realized in mapping out the timeline and things that Steve and Megan start to have the first real rumblings of trouble in their marriage around the time Eddie comes home, and while that is not the ONLY thing that contributes to those warning signs, it is certainly A thing. One of the things they can’t figure out how to be open with each other about, can’t talk about, and all the other things they can’t be open about and can’t talk about sort of start to pile up around it. We don’t think Megan ever did consider Eddie as like, the Other Woman because she really does feel like the collapse of their marriage was something she and Steve alone presided over and participated in, it did not take a third party to sabotage it at all. Does that mean she always was perfectly happy with Eddie over the course of that decade? AHAHAHA CERTAINLY NOT! But there’s not so much blame and jealousy there as like, confusion and discomfort.

Basically, when Steve is like “I started seeing someone, and I want you to know it’s serious” Megan is immediately like “it’s Eddie isn’t it” and when Steve is like GASP WHAT HOW she is just like HAHAHAHA I FUCKING KNEW IT.
