Aaron's been nursing the same pint for the last... How long? Two hours? Three? Long enough for the beer  and glass to have gone warm. Long enough that his fingers no longer leave cold, wet prints on the table when he draws formless patterns on it.

Once the funeral is over, he's leaving. He's decided this. There's nothing keeping him here, and now any good memories this village held has been torn apart by unrelenting teeth. Life on the road was kinder to him than this return has been. He came to say goodbye to his gran. Didn't know he'd lose his little sister as well.

God it's morbid. Too morbid. Unrealistically, unreasonably morbid. When the hell is he going to catch a break?

'Aaron.'

It takes him a moment to realise his name has been said, and even longer to recognise who said it. Not because it's unfamiliar to him, far from it. It's so familiar he hears it mingled with his own in his head; in his dreams. But that's where it usually stops and stays. It doesn't dwell here, amongst his waking hours.

'Aaron. Aaron. Hey. You're scaring me now.'

And only at the actual string of anxiety in that voice does Aaron look up. And he freezes. Because it feels like he's scraping his fingernails down metal, but the dissonance arranges itself into something he can bear to listen to. Because this face is so familiar to him, but it's wrong to see him here, the way it used to be.

A smile, put together by anxiety and concern makes its way onto the lips of the face. 'Come on. I know it's been a couple of years, but don't tell me you've forgotten me?'

He sits, next to Aaron. And Aaron is still convincing himself it's an illusion, until fingers brush against his own. And he's hit, battered, clobbered by such a feeling of grief, loss, despair, and disbelief, love, relief. God, overwhelmingly, blindingly relieved. His sister is still dead, he still failed her, but with this man, he is stronger; can get through anything as long as he has

'Robert.'
