across my memory.
natasha romanoff x fem!reader
main masterlist
summary: an arranged marriage led you to leaving the woman you love. who knew that you would meet again merely a decade later only under different circumstances once upon a december.
contains: angst and some fluff (if you squint hard enough)
a/n: i recommend listening to once upon a december while reading this cause i sorta based this story on that song :>
Tumblr media
You have received an invitation by the neighboring kingdom of Volkov, they were inviting you and your husband to their grand ball in celebration of the king’s birthday.
As you were checking yourself in the mirror you suddenly heard a knock on the door, “Are you all prepared my dear?” your husband asked.
“I- um… yes, I’m all ready now.” You replied and stood up swiftly from your seat then grabbed all your belongings before leaving the room.
Once you opened the door, your husband greeted you with awe and admiration in his eyes. You were wearing a deep red ball gown with beads and pearls surrounding it, there was nothing really special about your ball gown, in fact, you found it stocked away in your closet. “You always look so mesmerizing, my love.” He said and kissed you on the cheek and offered his arm for you to hold.
Attending grand balls wasn't something you really liked, in fact, you always found them socially tiring but your husband thinks otherwise. He would always be happy to attend these gatherings, because of the chance to socialize with other people which he oh so love whereas you were acting like an obedient wife following him everywhere he goes.
~~~
You finally arrived at the ball and as usual, you walked beside your husband as he chatted with some of your friends and acquaintances.
“Artur, it has been a while old friend.” A man suddenly said as he shook your husband’s hand and kissed your gloved hand as a greeting. You realized that it was the king himself, Roman Volkov.
“It has been indeed, I see you’ve finally married.” Artur gesturing to the woman who is assumingly his wife who has a fan covered across her face, only her eyes seemingly visible to you.
Emerald eyes. Eyes that you remember all too well.
It’s her.
“I’m Natasha, it's a pleasure to meet you Artur.” Natasha spoke and bowed slightly to him.
“The pleasure is all mine,” your husband said as he kissed Natasha’s gloved hand, “This is my wife, Y/N.” Artur introduced and you bowed to her slightly in greeting.
“Why don’t you both ladies chat whilst Artur and I chat to catch up on things while having drinks?” Roman said as he planted his arm onto your husband’s shoulder.
“Sounds like a great idea,” Artur suddenly chimed.
A total bad idea.
“Alright, but don’t drink too much.” You said to him.
“I’ll see you later, love.” Artur said, then kissed you on the cheek before he left with Roman. You could feel Natasha’s eyes on the both of you.
Natasha removed the fan from her face revealing her full facial features, it’s like she hasn’t even aged. She still looks beautiful as you remembered. “Follow me.” she said before you both walked in silence.
Someone holds me safe and warm
Your mind was racing with questions, it has been merely 12 years since you saw each other and the night you promised her a life with you for eternity.
Horses prance through a silver storm
Figures dancing gracefully
“Some wine?” Natasha offered as the two of you entered what assumably is their entertainment hall because of the piano on the side of the room and with the bookshelves around.
“No, thank you.” You replied, making Natasha shrug and poured herself some wine.
“I can’t believe you’re married, for how long?” you asked.
Natasha swallowed her wine and replied, “For almost five years now.”
Your heart sank upon hearing those words, but you knew it was bound to happen after what you said to her all those years ago.
“I'll end our marriage in five years time, and I promise that I'll be with you until my last breath.”
Across my memory
“Do you actually love him? Is that why you didn't leave him like you said you would years ago?” Natasha suddenly blurted out.
You were taken aback by her question, “Natasha, I-”
“It’s only a simple yes or no question Y/N.”
You took a deep breath, trying to calm yourself down before saying, “Yes, I love him.”
That wasn't enough to convince her. She started to move closer and you kept backing away but eventually your back hit the wall, “Look me in the eyes and say that one more time.”
Far away long ago
You looked into her emerald green eyes, oh how you missed those eyes of hers, eyes that would look at you with much love and admiration, but now, her eyes were filled with something different, rage, anger, and sadness.
Glowing dim as an ember
Your mouth opened but nothing came out making Natasha smirk and say, “I know you’re lying but if you insist.”
You wanted to speak but you knew she wasn't done, “You said to wait for you for five years but I waited for six long painful years before I fully convinced myself that you weren’t coming back. I eventually decided to marry Roman. I told myself that I’ll learn to love him and hopefully forget about you throughout our marriage.
But I couldn’t, I acted like a faithful wife around him but I acted like I was in a brothel when he wasn’t around. I slept with multiple women trying to banish you from my mind but I just couldn’t.”
You were stunned and shocked with what she said but she continued, “You probably have forgotten about me after all these years, seeing that you didn’t come back for me five years after you got married.”
Things my heart used to know
You couldn't stay quiet any longer,  “How could I forget the woman who loved me for who I am, the woman who made me feel like I was safe with her. The woman who made me feel like I was… home.” You replied and you suddenly felt your eyes sting, tears wanting to fall but you stopped yourself from being too vulnerable in front of her.
“If you truly loved me, you could’ve done what you promised all those years ago!” Natasha said in an almost yelling tone. She saw you flinch at her words and immediately regretted raising her voice at you, “I-I'm sorry.” she said and approached you once again.
Things it yearns to remember
She cupped your cheek and her eyes flickered onto your lips silently asking for consent. You nodded slightly and closed your eyes until finally feeling her lips on yours. It was filled with passion and longing, almost like it was a perfect puzzle.
You missed this, you missed the feeling of kissing her, touching her, you missed everything about her.
“You’re as beautiful as the day I last saw you.” you said which made Natasha smile sadly.
Your tears started to stream down your cheeks and she was there to wipe them, just like how she would before.
“Would you still run away with me if I asked you to?” Natasha asked with a slight smirk on her face.
You shook your head slightly, “I can’t.” you whispered.
“You can’t or you won’t?” Natasha retorted.
You held her hand and placed it onto your stomach, “I’m… pregnant.”
You felt Natasha tense up at the unexpected news but she asked, “Does he know?” and you shook your head, “I haven’t told him yet.”
“We can still run away together, we’ll take care and raise the child like our own.”
“Don’t be ridiculous Natasha,” you let go of her hand and walked to where the wine bottle was, grabbing yourself a glass.  “Artur has been wanting to have a child for years and me leaving him for you is a death sentence, for me and especially you.” You said and immediately drank half of the wine in your glass. “This unborn child is now my priority. That is why as much as I want to leave the place I call hell everyday and take another chance of a new life with you I can’t.”
You took another drink and more tears started to flow down, “It also would be best if this is the last time we’ll see each other.” you said with a choked sob.
Natasha immediately approached you and made you face her, “No, no, moya lyubov, please,” she begged. If her voice already sounded like she was hurt, her eyes showed more pain. “It’s been more than a decade since we last saw each other Y/N, isn’t this supposed to be a sign from the gods that we’re meant to be with each other?”
She was right, despite after not seeing each for years on end, fate had decided that the both of you would meet once again once the both of you had lost all hope.
Only in different and more complicated circumstances now.
Natasha held your hand and said, “Please Y/N, don’t leave me again.” Her eyes were begging for you to leave with her.
A sudden knock on the door made you both stand still. “Y/N? Are you in there with Natasha?” It was your husband.
“I… uh- yes, we’re in here.” you replied and Artur entered the room.
“As much as I hate to interrupt your chatting but we best get going, it is almost midnight and I know how much you value your rest.” He said as he wrapped his arm around your waist, “I sure hope you and Natasha had a great chat.”
“We did.” Natasha dryly replied with a fake smile plastered on her face as he looked at your husband.
Artur smiled and asked you, “Well, shall we go?”
“Yes, let’s go.” you replied and Artur started to walk you outside with him. “Actually, there’s something I’d like to ask Natasha… alone.” you said to him.
“Alright my love, I’ll wait for you outside.” Artur then left the room and once you heard him shut the door you immediately rushed towards Natasha and crashed your lips onto hers one last time.
And a song someone sings
Natasha felt it, and you did too.
It was farewell.
You walked out of the room without saying another word, only holding onto the memory of a forbidden love that two women failed to save despite being given another chance to do so.
Perhaps in another life or in another universe, you and Natasha lived the lives you wanted together. It just wasn’t this one.
Once upon a December....
...Breathtaking...
...Enigmatic...
...Graceful...
Something drew me towards...
And it was not just beauty...
...It was...
...𝘏𝘌𝘙...
It was December where I first saw 𝘩𝘦𝘳 on a Christmas ball.
Dressed in emerald green gown, 𝘩𝘦𝘳 fair skin accompanied by a set of shining, gold jewelery and 𝘩𝘦𝘳 auburn locks softly tied back with a bow.
𝘚𝘩𝘦 was surrounded by various men, older and younger. I wasn't the only one fascinated by 𝘩𝘦𝘳. 𝘚𝘩𝘦 looked so lost amongst them, so confused, so... scared.
The voice of my father took me out of trance and immediately engaged me into a conversation, I was very clearly not interested in. The whole time my thoughts were with 𝘩𝘦𝘳...
When we finished 𝘴𝘩𝘦 was no longer there.
I haven't seen 𝘩𝘦𝘳 anymore that night...
Someone holds me safe and warm.
Horses prance through a silver storm.
Figures dancing gracefully across my memory.
It was the second time I saw 𝘩𝘦𝘳 that I learned 𝘩𝘦𝘳 name.
...
I was brave enough to approach 𝘩𝘦𝘳 that time. Her bright smile was a pure delight to see and her soft voice was like honey to my ears.
I wanted to ask her to dance, but 𝘴𝘩𝘦 was quicker. It was a nice and werid feeling to be asked to dance by a women, when usually you were the one to ask. But I didn't comply and agreed, to her joy.
Her royal blue gown spoon delicately with every her move as we danced until the late night...
''Thank you''
Were her last words until she disappeared into her 1960's Rolls-Royce, leaving me satisfied that I could add some charm to her time.
Someone holds me safe and warm.
Horses prance through a silver storm.
Figures dancing gracefully across my memory.
The third party was hosted by my family and I decided to invite her myself. I had to weasel my way into my grandmother’s and her friend's good graces in order to find out more about the enchanting girl.
I hopped onto my horse and galloped to my beloved’s mansion. It was a huge Victorian castle, settled among the hills and forests, giving it the perfect fairytale atmosphere and making the girl living inside even more princess like.
“Here”
A soft voice squeaked from between the tall trees. I was fast to get off the horse and follow it.
It led me to a small pond, surrounded by dozens of beautiful flowers and between them sat her...
“What brings you here? “
She asked as I approached her slowly, her green eyes darting away from the flower crown she was making to meet mine. She read through me almost immediately and answered before I could even open my mouth.
“Sure”
She stood up and took a few steps towards me. Our faces inches away as she stared into my soul, trying to find a reason why such an intelligent and sophisticated gentleman as me took a liking in a country girl she really was.
After what felt like hours, she lifted her hands and placed a crown full of corn flowers, daisies and poppy flowers on top of my head. She explained why she chose the flowers and I listened to every her word while melting in her eyes.
“Thank you”
Was the only thing I have managed to breathe out before she left, again...
Far away,
Long ago,
Glowing dim as an ember,
Things my heart
Used to know
Things it yearns to remember
And a song someone sings...
When the party started, she was the only person I awaited. No one there interested me so much as she did.
As I started to loose faith she walked through the huge door to the ballroom. Her pastel yellow dress shined in the light of the chandeliers taking my breath away.
She surprised me more every time I saw her.
“You came”
I chirped happily and took her under my arm.
“Of course I did”
She giggled and took my arm, already pulling me to the dance floor.
“I've noticed you like to dance”
“You don't?... “
Her expression shifted from happy to sad before we even stepped on the dance floor.
“I do... Especially with you”
A blush spread across her face and a flirtatious smirk creeped up onto mine. We didn’t say anything more, just started to dance and indulge in each other’s company.
All eyes were on us, yet she didn’t seem to care.
When the party was slowly coming to an end, we sat in my mother's gardens, gazing at the sky full of stars and listening to the sough of the fountains.
“Zemo?”
Silence...
“Why do you like me? “
I didn’t respond...
My hand found it's way to her cheek then stroked it gently. I saw her eyes trying to find an answer to her mind-boggling question on my face, but it was blank...
Soon our lips met in a soft but tender kiss. I was afraid she would pull away, but she came even closer. We poured all our feelings into the kiss hoping we would understand each other's intentions more.
I think it worked...
...Once upon a December...
So that was my short story for Baron Helmut Zemo.
I hope you liked it :))
Thank you so much for reading and have a good day or night 💫
Y/n sang, staring out the window at the brightly glowing full moon. She jumoed, stuttered for a moment, and fell silent as Celegorm came into view. She didn't know he was there. She was quite shy abiut her singing, no matter how many times it had been complimented in the past.
“I find it insulting that you refuse me such a spectacular hearing after the endless praises of your voice being beautiful.” He frowned as he leaned against the doorframe; a hurt puppy-like expression on his face.
“Just one song for me to have sweet dreams of you, sweetness?” he begged and placed a hand over his heart. “Let me dream of you as you lull me to sleep.”
Once Upon a December
Title: Once Upon A December
Summary: You’re Morgan Stark’s favorite Avenger and she won’t go to sleep unless you do the magic and sing her a song.
Tumblr media
Warnings: I don’t think there is any? Use of magic? It’s really just a cute, fluffy moment.
Wordcount: 712
You were in the common room area of the Avenger’s Compound, sitting by the fireplace and talking with Bucky, Steve, and Nat. The flames of the fire flickered and the lights were dim to set the mood with the late hour. Almost everyone else had gone to sleep by now. You were in the middle of a conversation when you heard footsteps coming from down the hall causing you to perk up. You turn in the direction that they’re coming from to see Tony emerge from the darkness. He stops a few feet away and lets out a defeated sigh. A small smile begins to curl up at the corner of your lips, you already know what he’s about to ask.
“She’s asking for you. Well, more specifically, she’s asking for the magic. She’s refusing to go to sleep without it and her song.” Tony explains, you can hear the exhaustion in his voice.
“Of course, anything for my favorite Stark.” You reply, almost instantly. You go to stand up but before you leave, you turn to your friends. “I’ll be back in a bit.”
You walk with Tony to Morgan’s room.It’s quiet between the two of you for a moment, you can tell he’s tired.
“Ya know, I’m gonna ignore that comment about Morgan being your favorite Stark. For now, anyway.” Tony tiredly quips.
His comment causes you to let out a small laugh. “Whatever you say Tony.”
It doesn’t take long before you’re at her room, sitting on the edge of her bed. She’s all tucked in for the night but keeps fighting sleep and keeps wriggling around.
“Please do the magic with the song! Please!” She begs, giving you her best pout.
You tickle her sides and she lets out a few giggles. “Alright but after this, you have to go to sleep. Deal?” You lightly tap the button of her nose with your index finger and she giggles in return.
“Deal!” She exclaimed excitedly, a huge smile on her face.
You take in a deep breath and lift your right hand up. You emit a few colorful sparks from your fingertips and you watch Morgan’s face light up. You can’t help the smile that grows on your face and let out a few more sparks. Taking another deep breath before you start to sing and you make shapes with colorful sparks and mist that correspond with each verse.
“Dancing bears, painted wings
Things I almost remember
And a song someone sings
Once upon a December,”
You can’t lie, you enjoy doing this for the young Stark. Before you know it, you’re getting into it yourself and you’re using both hands to create shapes with your magic. Shooting each image into the air.
“Someone holds me safe and warm
Horses prance through a silver storm
Figures dancing gracefully
Across my memory,”
You take a moment to catch your breath and hum for a little bit. As you hum, you make small people with your magic in the forms of sparks and make them dance.
“Someone holds me safe and warm
Horses prance through a silver storm
Figures dancing gracefully
Across my memory,”
You haven’t even noticed that Morgan has already fallen asleep, you’re too wrapped up in the song.
“Far away, long ago
Glowing dim as an ember
Things my heart used to know
Things it yearns to remember,”
Shooting off a few more shapes before the song ends, you sing the last past. Lowering your voice just a little as you sing.
“And a song someone sings
Once upon a December.”
When you finish, you can’t help the smile that tugs up at the corner of your lips. Morgan was sleeping soundly and soft snores were coming from her. You lean forward a little and place a sweet peck on her forehead. Carefully, you stand up, doing your best not to wake the now sleeping Morgan. You walk over to Tony, who had been standing in the doorway the entire time. You place your hand on his shoulder and tiredly smiles down at you.
“Thank you.” Tony says quietly.
You give him a gentle smile. “It’s no problem.”
You then make your way to your room, feeling quite exhausted yourself. Completely forgetting about returning to your friends.
🎶 - @arcanescion requested Angelica to sing her a song
Caitlyn was no longer the child Angelica knew and loved; she had matured significantly, shedding her innocence along the way. Nevertheless, the love she felt for the other remained the same.
Despite acknowledging the changes that had taken place in the dark-haired woman's life during their years apart, Angelica wished to know if Caitlyn still remembered the time past.
When the new Chem Baroness asked her longtime friend to sing a song, the first that came to mind was from a children's play they had watched at the theater a decade ago.
"Dancing Bears Painted Wings Things I almost remember. And a song someone sings Once upon a December.
Someone holds me safe and warm. Horses prance through a silver storm. Figures dancing gracefully across my memory.
Far away, Long ago, Glowing dim as an ember, Things my heart Used to know Things it yearns to remember And a song someone sings Once upon a December"
Angelica's voice remained as captivating as ever, perhaps even more now. There was something different, an underlying quality that resonated deeply within the hearts of those who listened. Her heart ached with nostalgia, and so did of others who could possible be eavesdropping on them. Would the same happen to Caitlyn?
