Folks often use software that’s expensive and sometimes even inferior because they don’t know there are alternatives. So to those unfamiliar: basically, free and open-source (FOSS) or "libre" software is free to use and anyone can access the original code to make their own version or work on fixing problems.

That does not mean anyone can randomly add a virus and give it to everyone—any respectable libre project has checks in place to make sure changes to the official version are good! Libre software is typically developed by communities who really care about the quality of the software as a goal in itself.

There are libre alternatives to many well-known programs that do everything an average user needs (find out more under the cut!) for free with no DRM, license keys, or subscriptions.

Using libre software when possible is an easy way to fight against and free yourself from corporate greed while actually being more convenient in many cases! If you need an app to do something, perhaps try searching online for things like:

Some Libre Software I Personally Enjoy…

LibreOffice

LibreOffice is an office suite, much like Microsoft Office. It includes equivalents for apps like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, which can view and edit files created for those apps.

I can't say I've used it much myself yet. I do not personally like using office software except when I have to for school.

OpenShot

OpenShot Video Editor is, as the name suggests, a video editing program. It has industry-standard features like splicing, layering, transitions, and greenscreen.

I've only made one video with it so far, but I'm already very happy with it. I had already paid for a video editor (Cyberlink PowerDirector Pro), but I needed to reinstall it and I didn't remember how. Out of desperation, I searched up "FOSS video editor" and I'm so glad I did. There's no launcher, there's no promotion of other apps and asset packs—it's just a video editor with a normal installer.

GIMP

GNU Image Manipulation Program is an image editor, much like Photoshop. Originally created for Linux but also available for Windows and MacOS, it provides plenty of functionality for editing images. It is a bit unintuitive to learn at first, though.

I've used it to create and modify images for years, including logos, really bad traceover art, and Minecraft textures. It doesn't have certain advanced tech like AI paint-in, but it has served my purposes well and it might just work for yours!

(Be sure to go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Colors. I have no idea why that's not enabled by default.)

Audacity

Audacity is an audio editing program. It can record, load, splice, and layer audio files and apply effects to them.

Audacity is another program I've used for a long time. It is not designed to compose music, but it is great for podcasts, simple edits, and loading legacy MS Paint to hear cool noises.

7-Zip

7-Zip is a file manager and archive tool. It supports many archive types including ZIP, RAR, TAR, and its own format, 7Z. It can view and modify the contents of archives, encrypt and decrypt archives, and all that good stuff.

Personally, I use 7-Zip to look inside JAR files for Minecraft reasons. I must admit that its UI is ugly.

Firefox

Firefox is an internet browser, much like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari. While browsers are free, many of them include tracking or other anti-consumer practices. For example, Google plans to release an update to Chromium (the base that most browsers are built from these days) that makes ad blockers less effective by removing the APIs they currently rely on.

Aside from fighting monopolies, benefits include: support for animated themes (the one in the picture is Purple Night Theme), good ad blockers forever, an (albeit hidden) compact UI option (available on about:config), and a cute fox icon.

uBlock Origin

As far as I know, uBlock Origin is one of the best ad blockers there is.

I was on a sketchy website with my brother, and he was using Opera GX's ad blocker. Much of the time when he clicked on anything, it would take us to a random sponsored page. I suggested that he try uBlock Origin, and with uBlock Origin, that didn't happen anymore.

Linux

Linux is a kernel, but the term is often used to refer to operating systems (much like Windows or MacOS) built on it. There are many different Linux-based operating systems (or "distros") to choose from, but apps made for Linux usually work on most popular distros. You can also use many normally Windows-only apps on Linux through compatibility layers like WINE.

I don't have all four of these, so the images are from Wikipedia. I tried to show a variety of Linux distros made for different kinds of users.

If you want to replace your operating system, I recommend being very careful because you can end up breaking things. Many computer manufacturers don't care about supporting Linux, meaning that things may not work (Nvidia graphic cards notoriously have issues on Linux, for example).

Personally, I tried installing Pop!_OS on a laptop, and the sound output mysteriously doesn't work. I may try switching to Arch Linux, since it is extremely customizable and I might be able to experiment until I find a configuration where the audio works.

Many Linux distros offer "Live USB" functionality, which works as both a demo and an installer. You should thoroughly test your distro on a Live USB session before you actually install it to be absolutely sure that everything works. Even if it seems fine, you should probably look into dual-booting with your existing operating system, just in case you need it for some reason.

As for the Vampire Academy comic, I don’t actually have many scrapped scenes/edits, I actually only found one XD I tend to plan everything as to avoid wasting time on things I’ll not use, so I guess this was an exception.

This is the full panel that got cut to only focus on Rose’s face, back in chapter I - page 7 (top right). After the wasted time editing the whole thing to just use a bit of it made me rethink how I was doing things, so I plan better now. As for scrapped stories.... oh boy, sit down and have some popcorn XD Since it’s not VA related, I’ll put it under a cut. It’s trying to keep the comic going that is hindering alternate projects, but it’s nothing too new if you fallow my other Tumblr... unless you read to the end.

I don’t want to say these are scrapped stories.... more like, Temporarily In Limbo Projects:

The NaNo-born HP thing.

Before I started the VA comic, I nearly started a comic about an original story that was born in a NaNoWriMo over 10 years ago. It was a sort of alternate future of OCs I had in a Roleplay in back in the day, set in the Harry Potter universe. I never finished the story - 250 pages in English and 3 chapters away from finishing it to this day =’). Once a year I go back to read it just to feel the cringe.

What stopped me was all the extras I’d have to edit in, mainly cloaks and robes - because everyone had cloaks/robes, dragons (even if only for a chapter... 6 years ago no one had converted the dragons to sims 2 yet) and the hair of the protagonist. So I started VA instead, because it felt easier.

The AU Slice of Life thing.

From time to time, on my reblogs tumblr, I post images from the most “recent” OCs from the last roleplay I was in - I like to roleplay, ok? Once on FB a friend had posted a link to one of those online generators, there was one about generating demons and I tried it out. Funny enough, the very first result I got remembered about me about my character Thea. So I jumped to Sims and tried to make her as a demon, based on what the generator gave me and this was the result:

This was the first pass at the idea, but I wanted a tail and different feet...

And so came the no.2 pass, that I’m still sort of working on in the background. I liked this idea, placing my characters and the characters or my friend in a different setting. I wanted to write that story, but I needed the input of my friend and she doesn’t seem very interested, so I dunno if I’d be able to write a full story, I need her to bounce ideas with. Then I thought to just make slice of life images, the cool parts I have in my head, without having to layout a whole story. Again, problem would be having to edit things in, mainly tails (all tails would have to be hand painted in), feet aaand in the case of one of my friend’s girls, wings would have to be edited in. Oh and clothes. I don’t think finding decent harem style clothes is easy even today.

The I-Was-14-and-Wrote-Detective-Stories thing.

I got my first PC in 1996/7, no internet those days. And after I finished watching the last episode of a Brazilian soap opera about a female detective (A Justiceira), I decided create my own female detective and write stories. I wrote the 1st story in one hour and it only had 7 pages (in which I believed that American female detectives sporting midriff tops and high heel shoes to active work was completely normal). I still have those printed 7 pages XD And the cover I made for the book lol Only one friend of mine has ever lay eyes on those stories. It started all good and well, robberies and murders and stuff, but fast I branched out to human cloning, space travel, time travel, genetically altered wolves, alien abductions, religious/alien cults in Mexico, plane crashes, ghosts and an incident during the Paris-Dakar event... I was a huge X-Files fan at that time and got hugely influenced u_u I had 22 books planed, I wrote from 1997 to like 2003-ish if memory serves. Only finished 11 while the others stand in various degrees of scattered notes. As mentioned before, from time to time I go back to read it all and feel the ultimate cringe and wonder what I was on back in the day. It’s completely insane at times, but maybe with a bit (A LOT) of polish I could make something out of it. If nothing else, maybe remake the book covers in the Sims because back in the day it was only MS Paint and some cartoons on Powerpoint that I stripped and drew over on paint with a mouse to draw the covers and other scenes. It’s hilarious looking back at how dedicated I was, hot damn! I made wallpapers, Win95 desktop themes, Winamp skins, you name it XD That female Detective was the very first of my OCs and I never made her in the Sims correctly, maybe I should look into that because all I have to show for her is this XD Covers ranging from 1998 to 2003 (I only learned about Photoshop in 2005).

So these are my dirty little secrets that I might or might not one day act upon. Here, have a cookie if you made it this far. Despite having the askbox closed, multiple people still found ways to request that I cover the abomination that is CATWOMAN: SOULSTEALER by Sarah Maas, and who am I to deny such determination?

So the DC ya novels, as we can see, all abide by this Formula of BIGASS GRITTY DIMENSIONAL LOGO over the figure themselves, with their face in shadow, author up top, and title and needlessly dramatic subtitle down below. It’s not a good formula! The centrality is static and dull, the shadowed faces of the figures as a requirement is hard to pull off, and the logos and the figures are competing for hierarchical dominance.

Let’s talk first about these two versions of the batman and wonder woman covers, first, because they illustrate some of the, uh, flaws with this system.

The ones on the left are the paperback versions, and the Batman one is, almost, making the formula work: the gold accents of the batsymbol make the logo take visual precedence, the perspective lines are giving it some needed depth and dynamism, and the shadow on his face doesn’t look..... too awful, I guess. And most importantly, the type isn’t getting in anyone’s way: it’s a flat sans-serif, appropriately batman-ey but inoffensive. It’s actually, intentionally, Marie Lu’s signature author font from the Young Elites covers, but it works.

So i have no idea why the middle version, the hardcover/ebook, was like “no no, the type needs to look like a class full of fourth-graders learning to use word art in powerpoint did it.” It’s so, so ugly.

I also don’t know why they felt the need to oversaturate the background with blue, scale up the figure, and actually reduce the shadow on his face but like weirdly, but whatever. The paperback cover is better all around.

The Wonder Woman covers are worse all around, both of them. The paperback’s title type is better by merit of being Not Hideous but where Lu’s “signature” typeface was a naturally good fit, Barduo’s are a little more decorative, and letterforms used to evoke Magic Imperial Russia aren’t so great for Wonder Woman. Also, on the paperback, her legs sticking out of the shield logo like an M&Ms mascot is a DEEPLY unfortunate look.

So the type is either fine but ill-fitting or word-art hideousness, and the imagery is bad on both: murky dramatic ambiguity, a VERY fakebad faceshadow, (she’s being lit from below, it seems like from her shield; we instinctively know it should illuminate her facial features the same way) a static, symmetrical pose with no expression, backlighting that clearly doesn’t belong there, and I don’t know if her bracelets were superimposed or what, but they look STRANGELY fake and ugly.

SO.

This brings us to the worst of the bunch.

Here it is again in case you forgot because I can’t write short posts:

Honestly I only talked about the others to procrastinate bc i don’t even wanna get into this. It’s ugly and I hate it. BUT WE CAME THIS FAR, SO.

This is so bad I gotta break it down: we’re gonna talk about each element, first, and then about how they fit together (or fail to). 1) The symbol lockup/ “logo.”

I didn’t really talk about the “logos” themselves on the BM and WW covers, just how they worked within the design, but both of those were fine by themselves, as three-dimensional rendered items go. Which makes sense, as both those heroes have a long history of classic symbology to go with them.

Catwoman does not. So i have SOME (NOT A LOT. BUT SOME.) sympathy for this weird..... cat..... vault... thing. On the others I called it a logo, but because this is less abstract and more literal, doesn’t feel like one here; it just feels like a misguided imagery choice. Was the best conceptual way to express “SHE STEALS THINGS” really to make her whole thing a literal bank vault? Was it? Why is the cat symbol so small within it? why the heavy crosshatching texture? Why visually imply that this is an Actual Physical Thing To Scale when the scratch marks vs the size of the door handle make no sense? Why do the cat eyes look like the green fairy’s lips? Why the ghostbusters-ectoplasm-looking teal smoke?

Thing 2: the type.

I try to avoid low hanging snark/ hyperbole, but all i got for this is that between the beveling effect and the teal/purple combo, it’s hideous and it makes me want to die. moving on.

(Note: as of yet, there isn’t a paperback cover out, and based on what was done with the other two, we may have a version of this with Maas’s signature fonts to look forward to, whatever the fuck those are.)

3) The model.

So. Ugh. First of all, i saw some “OMG SHE’S WHITEWASHED” stuff flying around, and if you feel like that, that’s valid, (and god knows Maas has issues with it; I’m still not over the whole Illyrians debacle in ACOMAF/ ACOWAR, seriously, nevermind the messy “SURPRISE, LUCIEN HAS BEEN A MOC THIS WHOLE TIME, NO IT’S NOT JUST BECAUSE BLOOMSBURY SAID I NEEDED MORE DIVERSITY″ thing) but this looks like a brown girl to me. One styled to within an inch of her life and subjected to some truly heinous photoshopping, and one who will be doubtless be written with Maas’s deepest discomfort on full display amongst variations of the phrase “golden-tanned skin”, but I would still say that’s a WOC. YMMV, of course.

ANYWAY. This is a really goofy shot. Wonder Woman’s looked bad, but her arm-crossed thing is still her Iconic Move, and her hair could ostensibly have been blowing in the wind. Catwoman here is straight from a CW photoshoot for one of their teen dramas, w a wind machine on her and cat ears photoshopped badly onto her head. (Pretty sure it’s just the same ear, duplicated, too.) As with WW, there is an attempt at backlighting that doesn’t work and the face shadow is real, real bad.

Also, lol @ the fact that you can still see her legs poking out at the bottom. At this point just cut her off behind the logo thing? No one’s actually checking to see if she continues for that last inch behind it except me because that’s what I do?

4) The background! It’s! A City! because GOTHAM. I assume. I don’t know if the story actually takes place in gotham. Whatever. So here’s the thing: obviously, Figures on covers needn’t plausibly physically exist in what their background image is. That would be very limiting. So it’s not the fact that she isn’t actually standing miles above a city that bothers me, it’s that she’s close enough to sort of imply that she is, so instead of a deliberately unreal effect, we get one that’s just Off. It doesn’t help that the other two covers’ heroes definitely are supposed to physically exist in their background. Also the purple treatment is silly and the lighting is totally contradictory to what’s on the model.

OK BEAR WITH ME WE’RE ALMOST THROUGH. THE NIGHTMARE IS ALMOST OVER.

So we’ve talked about why the Series Cover System Overall does not work: static, boring, bad hierarchy, necessitated ugly effects and type. But Catwoman specifically does this the worst of all of them: the background is overemphasized, making the figure and the background compete, and the cover’s split straight down the middle between the logo lockup thing and the figure, making those compete, and the text is such painfully bright, undiluted colors that it steals focus from the logo lockup (which is weirdly lacking contrast) despite placement and the precedence of the other covers indicating it should be secondary in the hierarchy. Then there’s the tense, tight placement: the cat ears run into the author name and the lockup runs into the title, neither a deliberate overlap but an awkward lack of space.

This cover hates itself as much as I hate it, all the elements glaring at each other and fighting futilely in the backseat while the book threatens to TURN THIS THING AROUND.

I wish it would.
