The pair of brothers spent the rest of the night in Mammon’s room. Around dinner time they were joined by the twins who had brought tonight’s dinner. They had decided to eat with their second eldest brother, having heard from Satan who had heard from Lucifer that Mammon had had a particularly rough day at school and figured sharing a hot meal together would be a good way to comfort him. Even Levi stopped by after they had finished eating, bringing plenty of games that he and Mammon enjoyed playing together -along with the appropriate console- after they had first fallen so Levi wouldn’t go feral from his self-isolation.
It felt like they were a proper family once more- light teasing and proper brotherly bickering occurring between the five of them, making sure to keep things at a level that was normal for siblings and a far cry from the vicious words they would throw Mammon’s way. They had all spent so long playing that eventually they had all fallen asleep together on or around Mammon’s couch with Belphie being the first to conk out for the night.
When they all awoke in the morning, Asmo told their brothers about the plan to help Mammon escape to the human world and about how they were going to be uncles.
“Let me go with you,” Beel responded eagerly, “If Lucifer finds out before you guys can get away, my strength will come in handy to buy you all a little time.”
“Beel, as much as I appreciate it, I can’t let you do that ta yourself.” Mammon says, a worried look in his blue and gold eyes. “Ya know what happens if ya stand against our brother’s authority. I mean look at what he did to Belphie when he went against Lucifer and Lord Diavolo over the exchange programme.”
“Yeah, locking me in the attic was a shitty move on his part but still, Lucifer is acting like a fucking tyrant.” Belphegor agreed. “I mean we’re all pretty scared of the monster he’s turning into, but what he’s doing to you is wrong. And we heard about the gaslighting incident at school yesterday. That was really fucked up- and you’re the favorite. Imagine what will happen to us after he finds out.”
The brothers all nodded at that.
“An’ that’s why I don’t want y’all doin’ it.” Mammon said sternly. “You two’re the youngest an’ while yer both strong in yer own right, the two of ya can’t hold a candle ta our brother.”
“What if Satan and I went along with you?” Levi asked, “Sure, Lucifer’s power output is over 9000 but Asmo, Satan, and I should be enough to at least match that for enough time for you and Solomon to get through the portal...”
“That would work.” Asmo nodded as they had a contemplative look on their face. “Actually, we’d stand a better chance if the twins go too.”
“You guys would really do this for me?” The Avatar of Greed looks around the room at all of his brothers before letting out a soft chuckle, “Guess Lucifer was right ‘bout one thing... you guys really do care.” He can’t help the tearful smile that creeps its way onto his features.
“Of course we do. We always did but we never showed it in the way we should have,” the fifth-born threw their arms around their older brother and was soon joined by their other brothers. “I mean we’re the ones who promised we’d change and we went back on that almost immediately.”
“We’re a family and you’re an important part of that too.” The Avatar of Envy says as they all press their foreheads together like they did back in the Celestial Realm before they went to war. “You keep things lively for us.”
“So it’s decided, right?” Beel asks, “We’re really going to do this? Together?”
“Together.” A sixth voice echoes from the upper level as the five of them pull away and turn their attention to Satan. He has a genuine smile on his face as he slides down on the railing of Mammon’s staircase like he used to do as a toddler. “Lucifer’s gone, by the way. Went up to the Demon Lord’s castle for a weekend meeting with Diavolo. If we’re going to make our move, it has to be tomorrow. So, everyone, get packed. I already booked four of us a hotel to stay at so Arella doesn’t have to put us up for however many months it is before the baby’s born. Asmo, you said you’d be staying with Solomon, right?”
“Right,” The Avatar of Lust nods. “Alright everyone, get ready.”
And just like that, the siblings dispersed to go about their packing.
-------------------------------------------------
Arella can’t wait. After hearing of the news from Solomon a few days ago, the excitement started to grow. What she didn’t know was if Mammon had found out if she was pregnant yet. What would his reaction be? Surprise? Excitement? Something else? Anxiety filled her as it had been doing over these past few months so she picks up her D.D.D. that no longer has service and opened up her photo gallery which also had little videos of her and Mammon together.
The sound of his voice is comforting to her. It makes things feel much less lonely in the silent house- even with Aubrie visiting- but it also has the added effect of helping their baby recognize his father’s voice. With the little one showing signs of being able to hear the outside world earlier than expected and hijacking her magic to protect them when he felt frightened, the last thing she needed was the sound of a voice he didn’t recognize setting off one of the many protective spells in her repertoire. His favourite thing to do was erect a magical barrier around them to keep a threat away. Thank heavens normal humans weren’t able to see things like that.
As she selected a video- one of all the brothers and her together at Diavolo’s birthday party last year- she set it on top of the small bump that she had started showing a couple weeks ago. She could feel her son’s powerful little kicks to the side of her womb.
“Easy now, little one. You’re going to cause bruising with kicks like that.” Arella says as she rubs a hand over the front of her belly and she feels a turning sensation shortly after. “You certainly are active this evening. Your Daddy’s coming back to us tomorrow, okay? And five of your uncles as well so don’t be scared when you hear their voices. They won’t hurt you or me. They may be demons but deep down they’re a good lot.”
As the video playing on the D.D.D ended, Arella picked up a children's book and began reading aloud to her unborn child.
“Rells, I’m going to go back to my hotel. Do you need anything before I go?” Aubrie asked as she leaned against the door frame. “I’ll be back tomorrow to help you out before the boys get here- tomorrow is the day, right?”
“I don’t need anything but yes, tomorrow’s the day.” Arella smiles.
“Oh, I bet you’re excited.” The ginger smiles. “Alright, I’ll get going. See you tomorrow.”
Arella only nodded as she watched Aubrie go.
-------------------------------------------------
The House of Lamentation held a slight air of chaos to it this morning due to the brothers running around for last minute packing. They barely had time for breakfast but since Mammon had the least number of items to pack, he was voted for breakfast duty while Satan covered dish duty. Today’s breakfast: Pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon. As everyone sat down to eat, there was constant chatter about things they would do while up in the mortal realm during the months they would be staying.
While they were cleaning up, Solomon made his appearance. Asmo welcomed him with a hug as they quickly pulled the sorcerer along to Mammon’s room to get him so they could go. They both watch as he doesn’t react to their entrance instead seeming lost in his thoughts as he runs his thumb over an old, worn piece of grimm. Not even calling his name was enough to pull him from his zoned-out state. It wasn’t until Solomon placed a careful hand on the second-born's shoulder that Mammon looked up at them.
“Are you ready to go?” Solomon asks with a smile.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” The demon returns the smile, “Whenever everyone else is ready...”
Soon the rest of the brothers join them and it's time to go. Everyone grabs their bags or suitcases and load them up in the van that had been rented for them. Solomon was in charge of driving them to their destination.

We'll Be Fine
Summary: It's graduation day. Harrises meet Prices and Noah gives MC a gift.
A/N: Sorry this one took a while. I was replaying MTFL and realized that if you choose Noah, there won't be an option for you to give him a graduation gift. And since I miss him dearly, I decided to just write a fic about it. This is the first part of this two-part fic. Thank you for reading! It really means the world to me. Let me know if you like it!

Her room is almost bare. Most of the pictures that used to take most of the space are all safely packed in her suitcase. The only thing that remains untouched is the corkboard that holds the rest of the things she needed to do before moving to New York.
For the hundredth time, she skims through her suitcase, making sure that everything she will ever need is loaded. In there, she saw the softest scarf in the world. As if finding the last piece that will complete a puzzle, she quickly roams the room to find her camera. It is resting on the bed; she smiles loving its new look. It looks just like her. Even at first glance, you would know that that camera belongs to MC Price. She smiles remembering the memory.
~two weeks ago~
"Mack, what do I do? The graduation is tomorrow and my gift for Noah is still not here! I should've listened to Dad. I should've let him drive me there to get the package myself." MC worries as she walks mindlessly around the living room.
"MC, honey, relax. It will be fine. I'm pretty sure Noah will understand." Her dad calmly says as he finishes preparing the dinner.
"Also, look on the brighter side, sis, since the gift is arriving later than expected..." Mackenzie doesn't get to finish as MC interrupted her.
"Very later."
"... very later than expected, you'll have more time to plan on how you are going to give it to him. I'm thinking a date, a very romantic date."
"You guys are right. Yeah. It'll still be worth it."
Right after the graduation ceremony, Noah, together with her mom and Hazel make their way towards the Price family. As Dr. Price sees Noah, he swiftly offers his hand for him to shake.
"Congratulations, Noah." He says looking directly into him. Despite the shortness of his words, Noah gets the message.
"Thank you, Dr. Price."
"I told you, call me Dave."
The two of them share a laugh as MC and Noah introduce both families to one another.
As their families exchange pleasantries, Noah and MC catch each other’s gazes, smiling quietly, grateful for the opportunity. People their age surely think that introducing both families is such a big step in a relationship but Noah and MC honestly don't care about those stages in a relationship.
Right after Noah told his mother about the whole incident, how Dr. Price saved Elijah, she insists to meet him to properly say thank you. And that's how the Harris family found themselves sharing dinner with MC's family the night of the graduation.
The image in front of him makes Noah smile, not his usual smirk, but a genuine one. Both of their family get along surprisingly well. He reminds himself to thank MC for that later.
MC telling Noah her dad likes gift baskets because that's usually what patients give to him when they're well is definitely the charmer. It's not like Mrs. Harris has to win Dr. Price's approval but it's really the least she could do after what happened with Elijah. So when Noah learns this information, he quickly told her Ma who practically runs into the nearest store to get the most lavish, overflowing gift basket.
MC goes out into the porch to catch fresh air after dinner. As exciting as the day has been, she can't shake the sadness that's looming inside her. She's going to miss everything her eyes can reach: the place, the neighborhood, Mrs. Bartha, their widowed neighbor who always extends her most delicious pie with her family, the tree she fell off when she was a kid earning her a one whole hour of pain as her dad stitch her up in the clinic, and all of the other memories she quietly keeps to herself. She's ecstatic to move into New York, who is she kidding? She's literally going into her dream school. In her head, she lists all the things she should be thankful for so she could ignore the bitter-sweet feeling that has been sitting inside her since she realized these major changes.
Her reverie was cut short when she feels strong hands enveloping her waist. The person's smell immediately fills her nostrils, and she leans her head back into his chest.
"Hi." Noah softly whispers in her ear.
"Hey, Jeff Goldblum." MC responds wrapping her hands around Noah's neck as she turns around.
"Careful, I might start thinking you only want me for fulfilling your fantasy."
Both of them chuckle as MC hugs him tighter.
"What's on your mind, Cheer Squad?"
"Today's high on the charts. Look, Mack playing with Hazel, our families warming up to each other..." She says as she gestures inside the room where Hazel whoops in victory as she defeats Mack in UNO.
"I say, that's definitely more than just warming up."
"I know." MC groans pressing her head into his shoulders.
"So, what's the matter then?"
"I just... I'm so happy I can finally go to art school. What I have in my hands, Noah, is everything I ever wanted. But I don't know. I also feel sad."
Noah rubs the lower of her back as she avoided his gaze.
"We're all gonna be fine." Noah reassures her as she locks him in her arms.
"Hey, look at me, baby. We're gonna be fine. Your dad, Mack, us."
At the mention of their relationship, MC looks up and finds Noah already staring at her. Smiling warmly, holding her safely in his arms.
"Sadness is a common feeling when everything around you seems to be changing. But hear me out, Cheer Squad, everything you built and share with the people here, everything inside this house, all of it will still remain, and will always, always be here, for you, especially me. And you know what's the best thing is?"
"That my father can clearly see us through the window right now but not doing anything?"
"That and also..." Noah laughs as he slowly moves his hands to hold her face.
"You will have me, you will have us, always. You won't even have to turn around because I will be in your side, supporting you, cheering for you while you chase after your dreams."
"I love you. God, I'm so lucky to have you." MC gently smiles, tears forming in her eyes."
"Please, don't cry on me now, babe, or else your father might actually do something." Laughing, Noah wipes her tear with the pad of his thumb.
"I have something for you." Noah starts, realizing it's the perfect moment to give her his gift.
"You do?"
"Don't sound as if you didn't catch me asking Mackenzie for suggestions. Just a sec." Noah dash into the room to get his gift. He shoots Dr. Price a shy smile as if asking for a few more minutes before he calls it a day.
MC excitedly accepts the crinkled box as Noah looks to the ground.
"I... I wrapped it myself." Noah admits rubbing the back of his head.
"Then I love it even more."
MC opens the box and reveals a camera strap and a scarf.
"I know how insane New York could get when it's winter so I got you a scarf to keep you warm. A black one so it'll be easy for you to style it. Mack says if I'm planning to get any fabric, choose black because it goes with everything..." Noah doesn't get the chance to complete his sentence as MC once again wraps her arms around him and kisses him.
"Did you do that to shut me up?"
"Yes but mainly because I just wanted to kiss you. I love it, Noah. Thank you. And the strap, it's... it's me."
"I know. When I saw it, I knew I had to get it for you. Happy graduation, MC." Noah proudly smiles as he saw how happy his girlfriend is.
"Happy graduation, Noah. But my gift for you, it's not here yet. There's a delay with the delivery. I don't have anything for you now." MC speaks continuously, worry lines appearing on her forehead.
"Don't worry about it, it's fine. Thank you, whatever that may be."
Not being able to contain the happiness, MC hugs Noah while softly kissing his face.
Noah is just about to kiss MC on the lips when they heard a very loud, and obvious cough behind them. Noah laughs, slowly letting her go.
Mrs. Harris smiles as she once again congratulates MC. Hazel hugs her side as Noah shakes Dave's hand before fist-bumping Mackenzie. Despite the late-night hour, Hazel shouts sweet goodnights to the Prices as Noah starts the car. Glancing one more to MC's direction, he sees that she's already wearing the scarf. Smiling to himself, he mouths an "I love you" to her before driving away.
That night as MC prepares for bed, her phones chimes with texts.
Noah: We'll be fine.
Noah: I love you, Cheer Squad.
~present~
The doorbell rang bringing MC back into the present. The list in the corkboard is almost complete, there's only one thing left to do: "Give Noah's present, and enjoy the rest of the time together." Hundreds of ideas are already forming in her mind as she runs downstairs to get the package.

College graduation had arrived. That previous 4 years simultaneously flew by and drug on for Sage. She stayed local and went to Massachusetts, a decision she was grateful for. It hadn’t been the easiest journey since Dakota’s passing, but she was making it.
She had made new friends at school and kept her mind occupied on extra curricular’s. Sage still lingered around the topic of dating and Mateo and Lennox still called once in awhile, but life started to take over for all of them. However, there was still one time a year when Sage completely shut down and locked herself away from the world.
Dakota’s Anniversary. It happened to fall a day after her graduation and it really dampened her entire mood.
“Sage? You going to the big grad party tomorrow night?” Remi asked a very ill looking Sage.
“Remi!” Carson quietly hissed pulling the girl aside. “You know what tomorrow is.”
“Yeah? The big party?”
Carson sighed and made sure Sage wasn’t listening, “No! It’s the 4 year anniversary of her girlfriends passing. Every year she locks herself away and doesn’t talk to anyone. I guess she’s starting early.”
“Oh for goodness sakes, Sage!” Marley said stomping over from the kitchen. “You aren’t doing this again! This is our last big party before we all go our separate ways!”
“Marley!” Carson yelled at the bold statement.
“Stay out of it Carson. Stop playing peacemaker for her. We are all suite mates and I’m not going to let this negative vibe thing you got going on Sage keep ruining you.”
Sage kept still on the couch, not really listening, but just thinking back to her last day with Dakota. She saw Marley’s mouth moving but nothing was coming out.
“It was 4 years ago! Let it go! I know it still hurts but you’re just killing yourself. You grieved! It’s time to move on! She would want you to!”
“Ok Marley I think you said enough.” Remi stepped in with Carson.
Sage caught the last of Marley’s rant and it killed her to admit that she was right, so she simply met the eyes of her best friends and nodded that she would go.
The next night Carson kept close to Sage, trying to convince the girl it was ok to grieve and to stay home if she wanted. Sage pushed it aside and mainly sat at the bar all evening. Listening to her classmates hoop and holler, music thudding through her core.
She opted for the sparkling cider and mocktails because they were Dakota’s favorite. Alcohol wasn’t Sage’s friend and even it’s wicked power of mind erasing, Sage wasn’t into it. She just sipped her drinks and looked through her albums of her and Dakota, counting down to the exact time she had passed.
“Hey darlin? Wanna dance?” A preppy male voice called standing over Sage.
“Not interested.” She replied coldly.
“Come on sweet cheeks, let’s party!” He tried again.
“I said no.” Sage never looked his way. She wouldn’t give this guy the satisfaction of entertaining the idea.
“Hey doll!” The boy said snatching Sage’s phone, finally getting her attention.
“Give it back!” Sage hissed.
“Give me a kiss.” He laughed leaning down towards Sage.
“You’re drunk.” Sage backed away at the putrid odor.
“Awwww look guys! Is that you and your girlfriend?” He said looking at Sage’s Lock Screen. “You guys look like a couple of bald freaks!”
Sage snapped and smacked this goon so hard his head should have spun around. He shook off the hit and slammed the phone to the floor, shattering it into pieces.
“My phone!” Sage winced out before looking back to the goon who decided to throw a punch towards Sage that connected below her eye. It was a weak throw, mainly due to his inebriated state, but it still hurt and Sage, trying not to tumble and cry, found her foot resting firmly between the goons legs, sending him to the floor.
“Sage!” The girls come rushing over after the commotion, “Are you alright?”
“My phone....” She whimpered trying to collect the pieces.
Carson and the girls helped pick up the pieces and they apologized to Sage over and over while leaving.
“Hey! Wait up ladies!” A man called out catching them outside.
“Listen, tell your friend we will sue if he tries anything else, my dad is a lawyer. Hell, he will be hearing from him anyway for hitting Sage.” Marley barked out getting in the guys face.
“Easy easy. I’m just here to give her this.” The man extended Marley a roll of cash.
“This is $2500?” Marley spoke.
“Yeah. Some to get a new phone and the rest is just to say sorry. Don’t worry we took it from his wallet. It’s the least we could do.”
“Well. Thanks, now scram.” Marley hissed waving her hand in annoyance.
The suite mates made it home and Sage locked herself in her room. She looked at her luggage in the corner all ready to go and then to her smashed phone. This was Dakota’s night and she couldn’t even relive her memories through her phone. Stupid jerk she thought. $2500 wasn’t near enough to fix the emotional strain he caused.
Sage figured there was nothing left at school now, she graduated and it was best if she left as soon as possible. She had to get back to Boston to see Dakota.
She checked her watch, it was late but she didn’t care. She wrote up three farewell notes to each suite mate, thanking them for their awesome four years and wished them good luck. She heard the suite go quiet and taped the notes to their doors and took her luggage with her. It took a trip or two to load her car but she got it without waking anyone.
The road late at night was calm and peaceful. It was just her and her thoughts. She could finally mourn Dakota without interruption. But her eye continued to swell and bother her so she took some minor pain meds as she fought the pain and sleeping urge.
It was a longer drive than she recalled, most likely the dark and her sleep deprived body made it seem that way, but the sign for the cemetery perked her up even more as drew closer to the city. The closer she got to Dakota the more at peace she felt, she found herself closing her eyes behind the wheel soaking up the feeling of her lover.
She was in her own world now, a world she learned to tap into just for herself and Dakota. It was just them and no one else. She was so in tune to it, she never knew a drunk driver swerved over the line and hit her head on.
The transition was seamless, she was with Dakota in her own happiness.
“I’m afraid I have to go now.” Dakota spoke slowly disappearing.
“Dakota wait! I’m not ready to go yet!” Sage cried watching her girlfriend leave once again.
“It’s ok Sage, just wake up.”
Sage opened her eyes and found herself standing outside of the graveyard. It was daytime now, and she kept hearing her name.
“Sage!!!!” It sounded like Mateo. So she followed the voice.
“Sagggggge!!!” Now that was Lennox.
Sage smiled at the realization, “Ok guys, very funny.” Sage looked around but still couldn’t find the two voices.
Instead, a dark figured man appeared behind her, scaring the daylights out of her.
“Ok, this isn’t funny anymore. Who are you?” She said cowering away.
“I’m death Ms. Woods.”
“Death? But I’m not dead!?”
The man came closer and took her by the arm, opening up a portal with two paths, “Pick one.”
Sage pointed to the one on the right first, drawing her into a funeral in session.
The entire city looked to be there. As well as her mother and The Winchester’s. A funeral that seemed like Deja vu.
“Why did you bring me back to Dakota’s funeral?” Sage questioned.
“Look closer.” Death spoke.
Sage heard Mateo and Lennox calling her name like before and watched them this time. They weren’t trying to scare her, they were mourning her. As she focused on the tombstone, the name was her own, Sage Woods.
“That’s impossible! I can’t be dead!? How can I be dead?”
Death opened the portal and took her to the image on the left, “You were suppose to select this one first, like a book? Left to right.”
“Excuse me for not being very literate right now.” Sage yelled as she was brought to her car crash.
“Watch.” Death spoke pointing to her car.
Sage watched in awe as she saw her soul leave the car and rise to the clouds. “So if that’s my soul? Why am I here with you?”
“Why do you kids always ask so many questions? Look you’re dead and I’m showing you it’s true. Now I’m here to bring you to the afterlife.”
At the snap of his fingers, Sage found herself on a cloud outside of a great city in the distance. There was a gate and a man and a woman. One dressed in black and the other in white. Angel and a demon perhaps?
“Welcome home Ms. Woods. I’m Archangel Pariah and this is Demon Mezaya.” Then man spoke, “Here are your clothes.”
“Wait? Why are they gray?” Sage asked.
“You child, are an unclaimed. Unclaimed are typically mortals who end up here and have to earn their right to be a demon or angel.” Mezaya spoke.
“Up the path, the road splits into two paths, stay to the left. It is for the unclaimed. The other road leads you to the citadel.” Pariah said opening the gate.
“And what’s in the citadel?” Sage asked.
“When you are chosen to be an angel or demon, the citadel is an oasis for your own personal heaven. You can create your own and intermingle between others and their heavens.” Pariah added.
Sage kept on the correct path and ended up in a smallish town like place. It was cute and quaint, definitely old, but beautiful. There was hardly anyone about, but something was calling her to a building in the center of the town.
It was a feeling she couldn’t describe, it just felt right, it felt like...Dakota.
Sage entered the building revealing it to be a restaurant jam packed with unclaimed and a few angels and demons. And just like the new cowboy in town, as soon as she entered, the music stopped and all eyes where drawn to her.
A cup falling and shattering made Sage look at the source and came face to face with...
“Dakota.”

You were using the Bear app for your writing? How do you like it?
Why hello anon, I’m glad you asked.
*Wheels in projector and points it at the nearest blank wall. Plugs in iPad, brings up a powerpoint, and clears throat.*
TLDR: I fucking love Bear, it works really well with how my brain works. If you use Apple for your computing needs, it’s an amazing little app. I love that I can link notes IN notes, I think the tagging and sub-tagging is great, and I high key love that the premium subscription gets me a bunch of themes. I like a low contrast dark mode, which is surprisingly uncommon on most writing apps!! The premium subscription is super affordable (15 bucks a year), and it’s available on both iOS and Mac OS. The syncing through iCloud is phenomenal. It saves edits and changes automatically. It also runs well, so when you end up writing a surprise 8k on one piece, it doesn’t crash or take ridiculous amounts of time to load. It is, however, Apple only. If you want something like this for Microsoft, I think iA writer miiiiight similar? Obsidian would also be a good cross-platform option, it sounds like! Do a little research! See if it fits your needs.
The long version: I would die for Bear. So I uh … wrote a whole ass essay on it. Oops?
title: em simps for bear
wc: 1.6k ☠️
warnings: not sponsored (lmao do i have to say that here on tumblr?) i just love bear a lot. it is my bread and butter.
Before I was using Bear, I was using Evernote for my general note taking needs, but it was really really clunky. It ran like shit on my macbook (which was, admittedly, quite old) and it was even buggy on my iPhone. They also had like weird features i didn’t need. I’d started planning a story with it and it was just like, not working at all and I couldn’t connect points like I wanted to. I think my final straw came when it either had a syncing issue and lost notes I’d made on my phone and then tried to access on my computer, OR it crashed and I lost some planning. So I started looking into other “note-taking” apps.
(To actually write, I was still using Word, because my license of the Office Suite was old enough that I wasn’t paying a sub on it. But no one who uses Word on the regs would actually use word if they can avoid it, or at least that’s what attorney Husbeard says. He fucking hates Word. We’ll come back to this in a bit.)
Around this same time (mid 2019), I turned off my computer (a late 2010 MacBook Pro) for good because I could no longer keep updating the operating system. I know some people get salty about this, BUT that bad boy had served me very very well for an exceedingly long time, especially for a laptop computer. But, I wanted something to be able to read on and shit because phone screens are smol and I have sensitive weird ADHD eyes. So I got a baseline iPad. I’ve got an old Bluetooth apple keyboard (the battery one!! It’s like the 2009 model lmfao), which still works great, mostly because up until 2020 it never got much use. That’s all to say that when you loose the actual laptop form-factor, you have to reassess what your tech needs are.
It bears mentioning that at this time, I was not doing a ton of writing. I had have this thing where I’ll start doing planning and world building on something for funzies and just linger on a story idea for a while. So I needed something I could take effective notes on. Bonus points if I could make lists and such and keep everything kind of organized, but I didn’t need anything super precise or delineated because that’s just not something I super need as a person. I was not, however, doing a lot of actual writing, just vague notes, lists, etc.
By this point in time, early 2020, I was getting locked out of using evernote on more than two devices regularly and it worked like shit on my iPad, so I said fuck it and started looking for new options. I had some ideas burning holes in my pocket and wanted to get them out, plus my needs had changed by this point, so it was time for a new note app.
If you’re an apple user, there’s a shit ton of options. The market is hella bloated and a lot of these apps have useless features and connectivity that I just didn’t need. I didn’t need some whiz kid productivity app, I needed something practical and easy to use.
Enter Bear.
I think this started with googling “Evernote replacement” and the first thing that popped up was Bear. Markdown notes for iOS or something. It looked promising though and their website was nice, so I downloaded it onto my phone and started poking around. I really liked the interface, the tag system was way more effective than Evernote’s and I liked it enough that I kept getting annoyed that had to upgrade to sync to my iPad. It was good enough that I found myself reaching for it even when I didn’t have multiple-device access. Premium was only 15 bucks and well, this was just before the world started falling apart and I was way less worried about money back then, so I said fuck it and went for it.
And I haven’t looked back since.
I love the fact that Markdown lite it presents is really easy to use on both phone, and with a keyboard. Sure, it’s visible, but once you get used to it, it fades away with no issues. I really like that I’ve got a few font options for the editor, and that I can change the size and line spacing as I need to. I LOVE the theme options to the point that I have a hard time even reading anywhere else. LINKING NOTES WITHIN A NOTE HAS CHANGED MY LIFE, and the fact that it’s easy (just two plain brackets to start!) really changed the game for me. Once you get the tagging system down, it’s super super easy to make fit your needs.
None of these features are hard to use. This app does NOT take multiple hours long tutorials to figure out how to use (looking at you, Notion). It’s also regularly updated and the support staff are decent about keeping users in the loop (ahem, Scrivener).
There are some downsides, but it depends on what your baseline is.
This is not a traditional word processor. You can’t double space a document and then print it. You can’t add footnotes and shit, at least, not in the way that a lot of students probably need to. There’s no collaboration support at all, which was actually an enormous draw (more on this in a sec). You can’t set fonts for specific notes: you just pic one for the whole app and that’s what all your notes will pop up in. And on that front, there’s a distinct lack of Garamond which is forgivable only because this is something only I care about and this app works so fucking well I can’t be bothered to care anymore. Depending on your needs, some of this might be a good thing! Idk about anyone else but I hated having to format a word doc to make it look less trash just to type up a story idea. Having a uniform appearance might be nice for some people!
This is also the part where I mention my work flow is a fucking nightmare, and I found this out when I was working on NaNoWriMo for 2021. I wrote everything for Sacrificial/Lorge Joon Fic™️ in a web app called Hermit (which, don’t get me wrong, I liked it a lot) instead of doing it in Bear and then to do hand edits I exported it all in an html file which I then sucked over to a google doc and it’s been a fucking mess. AND IT’S ALL ON MY IPAD TOO. LIKE I’M NOT DOING THIS ON A COMPUTER FOLKS. IT’S A MESS. I’M A MESS.
If I were to do it all again, I’d just say fuck NaNo and word counts and just do it all in Bear with each chapter being its own note and use different features to make sure I can bounce between chapters with ease. Achieving more than 50k words in less than a month though … honestly I don’t recommend it. The novel I have now is a fucking mess for multiple reasons and that rush is definitely a part of it. If I’d just used Bear from the start, it would’ve been hard to keep track of actual word count but I think my workflow would have been a lot more streamlined. Figuring out larger projects in this app is a work in progress but I’m getting there! It’s totally possible, you just have to remember that not everything has to be a fucking word document.
It’s not perfect. But the other options all have problems too. Scrivener’s support staff is absent and gives no shits about developing for mobile (or Microsoft ope) infrastructure. I know people who swear by it, and I love that for them, but not for me. Notion is a fucking nightmare to work with unless you’re super dedicated to figuring out. Again, people who figure it out love it as an organizational tool. Word sux. Google Docs is good, especially if you’re sending things to beta readers or need specific formatting, but it gets overwhelmed by large files AND the support on iPad is … rough. I’ve had it crash a few times and I don’t like playing with fate.
So, Bear it is. Once you learn the markdown language (easy) and the basic features (y’all it is so easy), it’s a reliable app that doesn’t hurt my brain to use. It doesn’t ask much of me, and it does everything I need it to do. It works well on my iPad. And my phone. And if I end up getting a computer like I’m thinking about getting though absolutely can’t afford rn, it’ll work well on that too!
I know this is like … the essay no one asked for. If you made it this far, I love you. This is less organized than it could be, but I hope I made the case for using non-traditional word processors. The whole point of writing is to write, and I was getting too caught up in workflow and optimization and “right tools” and it’s all a lie, basically. This is something that often stresses me out, even now. I have to remind myself that what I’m using now works super well for me, and that when I’m stressed out about workflow, it’s likely because I’m feeling insecure about my writing in some way. Use what works best for you, and for me, that’s Bear.
