Your Maud Men diagram statement made me want to task you with the impossible. Find a link between Gilbert and Dean Priest.
"One catches a glimpse of all kinds of secrets now," said Dean. "On a night like this I always think of the 'hills where spices grow'...”
Emily’s Quest, Lucy Maud Montgomery
“I’ve come up to ask you to go for one of our old-time rambles through September woods and ‘over hills where spices grow,’ this afternoon,” said Gilbert, coming suddenly around the porch corner.
Anne of the Island, Lucy Maud Montgomery NOT IMPOSSIBLE but there is just this one isolate thing! (Unless we want to link them by their severe levels of downbadism, but even then — that’s kind of a wide pool for Maud’s men.) These are both the same allusion to an Isaac Watt hymn, “Who is This Fair One in Distress?” It’s quite a gorgeous hymn and also it’s very romantic in tone, and was clearly one that Maud thought of often. It talks of pledging love, and quenching fires and jealous hearts. So it’s WHOLLY there for subtextual interpretation for both of the circumstances in which Dean and Gilbert both think of it. I’ll include it behind the cut!
1 Who is this fair one in distress, That travels from the wilderness? And pressed with sorrows and with sins, On her beloved Lord she leans. 2 This is the spouse of Christ our God, Bought with the treasure of his blood; And her request and her complaint Is but the voice of every saint. 3 “O let my name engraven stand, “Both on thy heart and on thy hand: “Seal me upon thine arm; and wear “That pledge of love for ever there. 65 4 “Stronger than death thy love is known, “Which floods of wrath could never drown; “And hell and earth in vain combine “To quench a fire so much divine. 5 “But I am jealous of my heart, Lest it should once from thee depart; “Then let thy name be well impressed As a fair signet on my breast. 6 “Till thou hast brought me to thy home, “Where fears and doubts can never come, “Thy countenance let me often see, “And often thou shalt hear from me. 7 “Come, my beloved, haste away, “Cut short the hours of thy delay, “Fly like a youthful hart or roe “Over the hills where spices grow.”

In the Bible idolatry and adultery are used interchangeably. Jesus says that the only thing worthy enough to give grounds for divorce is adultery. Israel was given a divorce by God for reasons of idolatry, (along with other acts), but idolatry being the main one. They were ransacked by the Assyrian, the land taken, women raped, sons killed, then taken into slavery.
The first two commandments were the first two, for a reason.
Exodus 20:2-5
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
"But the church says it's OK because we keep it PG", this is some garbage excuse people in the church give.
You wanna know why they think it's OK? Same reason the people of Israel thought it was OK to mix idolatry with God.
Because God did not come down and drop kick their face the first time they did it. God was patient, wanting them to wake up. That patience was mistaken as "well it must be ok". Then centuries go by, people follow the imagination of their hearts and not His Word.
But God's patience will come to an end, and a lot of "believers" are going to find out the hard way that God takes idolatry very very serious.

The Ten Commandments
1 And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.
2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
3 The Lord made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
4 The Lord talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,
5 (I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to shew you the word of the Lord: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,
6 I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
11 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.
13 Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:
14 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
17 Thou shalt not kill.
18 Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
19 Neither shalt thou steal.
20 Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
21 Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.
22 These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me. — Deuteronomy 5:1-22 | King James Version (KJV) The King James Version Bible is in the public domain. Priest! Lo, X Vamp! Tom.
AU and the character of tom, Made by @sealedchasm
A Priest and a vampire.
Like Oil and water... They just don't mix.
Or so they thought.
A whole year.... that's how long the Vampire and Priest have been living together.
With only one rule.... "Don't turn the Priest." Because Tom has a coven, a collection of humans who he turned into vampires. A sire to them. And Lo, Frankly, doesn't want to join them.
He runs a church in the woods, down the way from a large cathedral - where Tom's coven is located.
There's lots of speculation on how Humans become vampires, but the most common (and most used) is draining the human, then feeding the dying light the blood of a vampire. Lo, being the kind man he is, Allows Tom to feed from him.
Which leads us to here...
"Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease~?" The vampire begged, wrapping his arms around the priest from behind...
"Careful of the rosary." Lo said with a soft chuckle. Tom pouted, Nuzzling his nose into Lo's shoulder. "I wanna-"
"you can want in one hand..."
"but you're a Priest! What happened to Love thy neighbour?"
"you're not my neighbour-"
Before Lo could finish, Tom pressed his Lips to Lo's. The priest's eyes widened, he squirmed against the Vampire's grasp, his tongue accidentally caught on his fangs... Tom tasted that sweet... holy.... Blood. He loved it.
Lo, Meanwhile, Was a little troubled. He was happy being kissed, he wasn't happy with the blood he could taste... eventually, Tom pulled away. "See? Not so hard, is it?"
"Dont... do that again... what if you'd accidentally caught yourself?"
Tom blinks a few times... "aweee but you'd be my favourite... My adorable little priest at my knees... Worshiping me..." He said, nuzzling Lo like a stray kitty.
"oh Tom... the only way I'll be on my knees for you is if you do something worthy of it. If I recall, you're wearing a turtleneck today because of what I did to you last night." Lo chuckled deeply, his eyes narrowing. And dear god... he looked beautiful, the soft pale skin gently illuminated by the subtle moonlight through the stained glass windows of the church, his narrowed gaze, the smirk he wears...
Tom felt his knees weaken.
"damn you! I am not a bottom! I just let you do that because I'm so kind, underneath that rosary and jacket, you're not so holy yourself!" Tom bit back.
Lo sighed and smiled.
"all the scratches I assume? Well, if my memory serves me correctly, then it's because you were trying to find ground while I f-" Before Lo could finish his recount of last night's events, Tom pressed a hand to his mouth. "Listen! I'm a Vampire Lord, no one needs to hear the... Activities... We get up to being closed doors!"
"oh my dear, it's just us. And I'd love to do that to you again, you'll find it was such a Heavenly experience for the both of us..." Lo smirked. Tom sighed in defeat, peppering kisses along his Priest's neck. "Fine... Just a little. Don't kill me, dear." Lo smiled sweetly. Before biting his lip and Tom sank his teeth in. Lo hold him there, for a short time...
In that moment... it was Love. Tom wasn't focused on purely Blood in this moment, Tom focused On Lo. His eyes, his complection. The soft burn the Rosary has on his unholy skin... he doesn't care. He's happy.
He considered, for a time, turning Lo in his sleep. But would his priest ever forgive him? Would everyone else in his coven get jealous? Lo would be treated as Just another Vampire... not with the respect his holiness deserves. Is this relationship... good?
Lo provides comfort, shelter, an escape from his coven of over 30 people.
And what does Tom provide in return?
He will find a away to pay back his debt. No matter the cost.

There is arguably no better known set of moral precepts than the Ten Commandments. As an exercise in moral casuistry, in this essay, excerpted from my chapter on religion in my 2015 book The Moral Arc, let’s consider them again in the context of how far the moral arc has bent since they were decreed over three millennia ago. (The Ten Commandments are stated in two books of the Old Testament, Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:4-21. I quote from Exodus, King James Version.) In the next essay I shall reconstruct them from the perspective of a science- and reason-based moral system.
I. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
First, this commandment reveals that polytheism was commonplace at the time and that Yahweh was, among other things, a jealous god (see God’s own clarification in Commandment 2). Second, it violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in that it restricts freedom of religious expression (“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”), making the posting of the Ten Commandments in public places such as schools and courthouses unconstitutional.
II. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.
This commandment is also in violation of the First Amendment’s guarantee of the freedom of speech, of which artistic expression is included by precedence of many Supreme Court cases (“Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech”). It also brings to mind what the Taliban did in Afghanistan when they destroyed ancient religious relics not approved by their Islamist masters. Elsewhere in the Bible, the word “idol” is synonymously used, with the Hebrew word pesel translated as an object carved or hewn out of stone, wood or metal.
What, then, are we to make of the crucifix, worn by millions of Christians as an image, an idol, a symbol of what Jesus suffered for their sins? The crucifix is a graven image of torture as it was commonly practiced by the Romans. If Jews today were suddenly to start sporting little gas chambers on gold necklaces the shocked public reaction would be as unsurprising as it would be unmistakable.
I the LORD thy God am a jealous God.
That might explain the genocides, wars, conquests, and mass exterminations commanded by the deity of the Old Testament. These humanlike emotions reveal Yahweh to be more like a Greek god, and much like an adolescent, who lacks the wisdom to control his passions.
The last part of this commandment—visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me—violates the most fundamental principle of Western jurisprudence developed over centuries of legal precedence that one can be only be guilty of one’s own sins and not the sins of one’s parents, grandparents, great grandparents, or anyone else for that matter.
III. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
This commandment is once again an infringement on our Constitutionally-guaranteed right to free speech and religious expression, and another indication of Yahweh’s petty jealousies and un-Godlike ways.
IV. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Again, freedom of speech and religious expression means we may or may not choose to treat the Sabbath as holy, and the rest of this commandment—For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy—make it clear that its purpose is to once again pay homage to Yahweh.
Thus far, the first four commandments have nothing whatsoever to do with morality as we understand it today in terms of how we are to interact with others, resolve conflicts, or improve the survival and flourishing of other sentient beings. At this point the Decalogue is entirely concerned with the relationship of humans and god, not humans and humans.
V. Honor thy father and thy mother.
As a father myself, this commandment feels right and reasonable, since most of us parents appreciate being honored by our children, especially because we’ve invested considerable love, attention, and resources into them. But “commanding” honor—much less love—doesn’t ring true to me as a parent, since such sentiments usually come naturally anyway. Plus, commanding honor is an oxymoron, made all the worse by the hint of a reward for so doing, as in the rest of that commandment: “that thy days may be long upon the land which the lord thy God giveth thee.” Honor either happens naturally as a result of a loving and fulfilling relationship between parents and offspring, or it doesn’t. For a precept to be moral, it must involve an element of choice between doing something entirely self-serving and doing something that helps another, even at the cost of oneself.
VI. Thou shalt not kill.
Finally, we get a genuine moral principle worth our attention and respect. Yet even here, much ink has been spilled by biblical scholars and theologians about the difference between murder and killing (such as in self-defense), not to mention all the different types of killing, from first-degree murder to manslaughter, along with mitigating circumstances and exclusions, such as self-defense, provocation, accidental killings, capital punishment, euthanasia, and of course war.
Many Hebrew scholars believe that the prohibition is against murder only. But what are we to make of the story in Exodus (32:27-28) in which Moses brought down from the mountain top the first set of tablets, which he smashed in anger, and then commanded the Levites: “Thus saith the lord God of Israel, put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor. And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.”
How can we reconcile God’s commandment not to kill anyone with his commandment to kill everyone? In light of this account, and many others like it, the sixth commandment should perhaps read thus: Thou shalt not kill—not unless the Lord thy God says so. Then shalt thou slaughter thine enemies with abandon.
VII. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Coming from a deity who impregnated somebody else’s fiancé, that’s a bit rich. However, the bigger issue is that this commandment, like all the others, is a blunt instrument that doesn’t take into account the wide variety of circumstances in which people find themselves. Surely grownups in intimate relationships can and should negotiate the details of their relationship for themselves, and one hopes that they’ll act honorably toward their partner out of a sense of integrity, and not because a deity told them to.
VII. Thou shalt not steal.
Again, do we really need a deity to command this? All cultures had and have moral rules and legal codes about theft.
IX. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Anyone who has been lied to or gossiped about can explain why this moral commandment makes sense and is needed, so chalk one up for the Bible’s authors whose insights here were spot on.
X. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s.
Consider what it means to covet something—to crave or want or desire it—so this commandment is the world’s first thought crime, which goes against centuries of Western legal codes. More to the point, the very foundation of capitalism is the coveting or desire for things and, ironically, it is Bible-quoting Christian conservatives who most defend the very coveting forbidden in this final mandate.
The late Christopher Hitchens best summed up the implications of taking this commandment seriously, in an April 2010 Vanity Fair essay: “Leaving aside the many jokes about whether or not it’s okay or kosher to covet thy neighbor’s wife’s ass, you are bound to notice once again that, like the Sabbath order, it’s addressed to the servant-owning and property-owning class. Moreover, it lumps the wife in with the rest of the chattel (and in that epoch could have been rendered as ‘thy neighbor’s wives,’ to boot).”
After demolishing the Decalogue in his inimitable style, Hitchens proffered his own list of commandments:
• Do not condemn people on the basis of their ethnicity or color.  • Do not ever use people as private property. • Despise those who use violence or the threat of it in sexual relations. • Hide your face and weep if you dare to harm a child.  • Do not condemn people for their inborn nature—why would God create so many homosexuals only in order to torture and destroy them? • Be aware that you too are an animal and dependent on the web of nature, and think and act accordingly.  • Do not imagine that you can escape judgment if you rob people with a false prospectus rather than with a knife. • Turn off that fucking cell phone—you have no idea how unimportant your call is to us. • Denounce all jihadists and crusaders for what they are: psychopathic criminals with ugly delusions. • Be willing to renounce any god or any religion if any holy commandments should contradict any of the above.”
Hitchens caps his list in summary judgment: “In short: Do not swallow your moral code in tablet form.”
Now, that is a rational prescription! In my next Skeptic column here I will offer my own “Provisional Rational Decalogue.” So you don’t miss it please consider subscribing below.

Sunday thoughts for Tumblrstake 10/8/2023
Hello folks. Couldn't sleep last night so hard that it became this morning. But I took the opportunity to do a little bit of study along with some extra things this afternoon.
Since I think you can get a lot out of studying on your own terms instead of just listening to my conclusions, I decided I'd just like to share some of the stuff I've been reading and listening to today:
TW for racism, systemic issues, etc.
Instagram/TikTok posts: (all from James Jones of Beyond the Block): On "thinking celestial"... What the Black Menaces teach us about idolatry "The sin next to murder" Mormon Stories Podcast Praying the gay away as a Mormon teen Stacey Harkey on “leaving” the Mormon Church
Dialogue Journal Truth and Reconciliation: Reflections on the Fortieth Anniversary of the LDS Church’s Lifting the Priesthood and Temple Restrictions for Black Mormons of African Descent (much less scary a read than the length of this title would lead you to believe) ---
My messy summary
Deuteronomy 5:9-10, KJV (italicized for emphasis)
9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto [idols], nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, 10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
I always felt uncomfortable about this verse. Mentions of God as a jealous god feel harsh to me and others with a generally universalist perspective on salvation -- we have a desire for others to be able to be happy now and in the eternities.
Even further bothering me has been the generational guilt that is implied here -- a curse upon someone, their children, and their children's children. But today I see it not as a curse but an explanation of how familial trauma and societal inequality persist.
In the Truth and Reconciliation article I shared, our author brings up that the church might try modeling a truth and reconciliation intiative similar to the one which was used in the country of South Africa after the abolishment of Apartheid.
Obviously, a truth and reconciliation initiative is more complicated when those needing to ask for forgiveness may not have been guilty of the transgressions themselves but may be the present-day representatives of those persons, policies, and institutions responsible for the wrongs. Nevertheless, it seems that they must take the risk of responsibility if true healing is ever to take place.
As modern-day generations, it falls on us -- particularly us in positions of privelige and power, but also to anyone who feels "called to the work" -- to right the wrongs of the past. We may bear no personal blame for the events of the past, but without our own efforts, inequality and unkindness will persist.
I hope I (and you!) can believe and remember this quote from Nelson Mandela:
No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.

The Biggest Sin is Associating Partner with Almighty God (Shirk)
“Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

“Enough religion remained so that I went into and out of the belief that this was a punishment, superficially for carnal excess but really for living in a love that rendered God negligible, optional, obsolete. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Yahweh’s First Commandment and one he wasn’t shy of fleshing out—Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: For I the LORD thy God am a jealous God … He had every right to be jealous of Arabella. It wasn’t the fucking, the licking, the sucking, but that with her these acts livened the soul instead of deadening it, elevated being instead of degrading it. Lest ye become as gods yourselves. The serpent’s reading of the Edenic proscription was correct. We were our own divine images, not graven but flesh and blood, and God shrank in the light of our divinity. Christ was born of a virgin and died one himself. What did he know? The truths of the body were ours, not his. Human love didn’t eradicate God, but it put Him into His proper distant second.”

The book of Ariana Grande's and Tariq Degraffinreed's love
Tariq found God and celebrated the passover and he had a social life.
Behold, Tariq gave up sex for God a total of 5 times in 7 years for an allotted time.
Something that is rare.
Why oh God must I suffer this harsh sexual jealousy. My fruit is withered away and and my loins are shriveled like raisins to a grape.
Thy leave from the tree of life can not sustain thee, how much more shall my privy member suffer at your hands.
My friends laughed at the dinner table and they applauded the wicked one and they gave honour and wealth to the adversary, but my fruit celebrated not, it was clothed in the sackcloth of darkness and suffering.
But I shall hope in the Almighty because I am not from Adam, I shall hope in the Almighty because I did not fall for the subtility of the serpent, instead I shall be restored and remade in the image of God and I shall replenish the earth and multiply my seed and subdue the maidens of earth why my privvy member.
Ariana Grande watered my plant and she did eat my fruit, I can not quit you she said and she did lick and caress the withered plant and it became holy in the Lord God's sight.
Ariana Suffered and her fans dwelled in darkness but her fans that died in Manchester were robots who hated God they had no soul and they had no awareness of their consciousness.
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson were Adam and Eve, Pete had a good heart but it is not known whether he had a good heart or a evil heart.
Pete Davidson had lips smoother than oil and he spoke in the flattery of tongue and Tariq Degraffinreed tried to warn Ari about Pete but she fell victim to his wicked charms.
All of Ariana Grande's boyfriends taught her valuable lessons of wisdom about who she is.
Ariana and Tariq dwelled in deep darkness for 7 years and they embodied the spirit of suffering and evil.
You must feel some type of pain in order to learn who you are as a person.
Behold Jake Paul tried to love Ariana Grande and God permitted their love for a little season.
God stirred up female social media influencers and female viners and female A-list celebrities to fight over Tariq's fruit and his two stones within his loins.
Behold in the spirit of jealousy there is more wisdom about your character and your heart than in the book of Job.
Jealousy is source of life for the the Lord God because it teaches him all of his weak areas and strong areas of judgment.
Therefor it is good to be a little jealous in order to grow and sometimes it shall be overbearing and it will overcome you
A man or woman will gain wisdom and knowledge on how to get many wisdom and a woman will not gain wisdom by obtaining a wealthy husband but only through the spirit of jealousy that dark angel who dwells as king of the bottomless pit, Apollyon can a man and woman find knowledge and wisdom.
A man who was jealous and a woman who was jealous both of their bones will be filled with light, the fat of marrow, and their blood shall be overcome not with the breath of life from Adam but they shall be overcome with fruitfulness derived from the image of God.

Interred with other daughters, in dirt in other potters' fields above them, parades mark the passing of days through parks where pale colonnades arch in marble and steel,
where all of the twenty-thousand attending your foot fall and the cause that they died for are lost in the idling bird calls, and the records they left are cryptic at best, lost in obsolescence. The text will not yield, nor x-ray reveal with any fluorescence where the hand of the master begins and ends.

Catholics keep saying the don't worship Mary...then 5 minutes later....
Exodus 20:4-6 KJV
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
The above video is not uncommon. This level of idol worship happens all through the catholic community. It breaks the second commandment God gave. This is man made doctrine. Catholics, you need to wake up. God said not to do it, man said not only are we going to do it, we are going to claim Mary has authority that was expressly given to Jesus. Whose doctrine do you think is going to stand in the end? I'm going with God's.

Elijah Flees to Horeb
1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. 3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. 5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. 6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. 8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: 12 and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? 14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 15 And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: 16 and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. 17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. 18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him. 20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee? 21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him. — 1 Kings 19 | Authorized King James Version (AKJV) The Holy Bible: Authorized King James Version; Cambridge University Press, the Crown’s patentee in the UK. Troparion, Tone IV
Supreme commander of the armies of Heaven,/ we, the unworthy, do ever entreat thee,/ that by thy prayers thou ever surround us with the protection of the wings of thine immaterial glory,/ preserving us that earnestly fall down before thee and cry aloud:// Deliver us from misfortunes, in that thou art the leader of the hosts on high.
Kontakion, Tone II: "The steadfast.."
O chief commander of God,/ minister of glory divine,/ captain of the angels and instructor of men:/ beg thou great mercy and that which is profitable for us,// for thou art the supreme commander of the bodiless hosts.
What is a Troparion? A troparion (plural troparions or troparia) In Byzantine music and Eastern Orthodox Christianity's religious music, a short hymn of one strophe, or organized in more complex forms as a series of stanzas.
THE HOLY MARTYR SERAPION UNDER SEVERUS (193)
Tumblr media
The Holy Martyr Serapion, suffered for Christ before Emperor Severus (193-211). As a Christian, he was brought to judgment before Governor Achilles. The holy martyr firmly proclaimed to the pagans his faith in Christ, and he was subjected to inhuman torments. Afterward, he was thrown into prison.
Healed by the Lord Jesus Christ, he was brought to the judgment place and presented himself before the judge completely healthy. The enraged pagans sentenced the saint to be burned alive. In the flames, he gave up his soul to God (+ ca. 205).
SAINT MARTYR JUTHWARA (England_6th. C)
Tumblr media
She was a pious girl who was the victim of a jealous stepmother. St. Juthwara prayed and fasted often and frequently gave alms. Upon her father's death, she began to suffer from pains in her chest. Its source was ascribed to her sorrow. Her stepmother recommended two soft cheeses be applied as a remedy, but the stepmother told her son, Bana, that Juthwara was pregnant. Bana felt Juthwara’s undergarments and found them moist, whereupon he immediately struck off her head. A spring of water appeared at the spot. Juthwara then miraculously picked up her head and returned it to the church. Bana repented of his deed and became a monk, founding a monastery at Gerber (later known as Le Relecq) on a battlefield.
Juthwara’s death occurred at Halyngstoka, generally accepted as Halstock in Dorset, where a field is still called by her name, modernized to “Judith.” There is also a church in North Cornwall named for St. Julitta, which initially bore Juthwara’s name.
Her relics were translated to Sherborne Abbey in the early 11th century, and her shrine remained a place for pilgrimages.

1 CORINTHIANS 10:12-22
12 So, let him who thinks he stands to take heed lest he fall.13 No temptation has overtaken you except such is common to man. Still, God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread. 18 Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What am I saying, then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? 20 Instead, the things the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with devils. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord's table and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
MATTHEW 16:20-24
20 Then, He commanded His disciples to tell no one that He was Jesus Christ. 21 From that time, Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. 22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!" 23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
Commentary from a Church Father
John Chrysostom (AD 407): Therefore, the rest being troubled and perplexed, Peter, again in his ardor alone, ventures to discuss these things. And he does not discuss them openly but only when he has taken them aside. Having separated himself from the rest of the disciples, he says, “God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” What is happening here? The very one who had obtained a revelation, who had been blessed, has now so soon fallen away, so as now to fear the Passion of the Lord, and thereby his faith has been overthrown. It is remarkable that Peter, who had not yet been fully instructed in the course of revelation, should come up with these responses. The larger picture had not yet been revealed to Peter, who was confused and overwhelmed. Peter had learned that Christ is the Son of God. But he had not known of the mystery of the cross and the resurrection. It was as yet not manifested to him. It remained hidden. Do you see how correct Jesus was in forbidding them not to declare his identity publicly? For if it so confounded the disciples, who were being made aware of it, who knows what the response of others might have been. This is why he rebuked Peter and called him Satan: to signify that he is voluntarily coming to his future suffering. The Gospel of Matthew, Homily

The desecration continued for centuries. In the fifth century AD, the colossal statue of Athena, the sacred centrepiece of the Acropolis in Athens, and one of the most famous works of art in the empire, was torn down from where she had stood guard for almost a thousand years, and shipped off to Constantinople – a great coup for the Christian city and a great insult to the ‘pagans’. This act of imperial defilement haunted the dreams of one Athenian philosopher: he had a nightmare in which Athena, now homeless, came to him seeking shelter. Other philosophers, who so loathed this aggressive new religion that they could not bring themselves even to say the word ‘Christian’, took to calling them the people ‘who move that which should not be moved’.
[...]
But look for a moment at the spread of Christianity from the other side and what emerges is a far less easy picture. It is neither triumphant, nor joyful. It is a story of forced conversion and government persecution. It is a story in which great works of art are destroyed, buildings are defaced and liberties are removed. It is a story in which those who refused to convert were outlawed and, as the persecution deepened, were hounded and even executed by zealous authorities. The brief and sporadic Roman persecutions of Christians would pale in comparison to what the Christians inflicted on others – not to mention on their own heretics.
[...]
In Athens, a larger-than-life statue of Aphrodite has been disfigured by a crude cross carved on her brow; her eyes have been defaced and her nose is missing. In Cyrene, the eyes have been gouged out of a life-sized bust in a sanctuary of Demeter, and the nose removed; in Tuscany a slender statue of Bacchus has been decapitated. In the Sparta Archaeological Museum, a colossal statue of the goddess Hera looks blindly out, her eyes disfigured by crosses. A beautiful statue of Apollo from Salamis has been castrated and then struck, hard, in the face, shearing off the god’s nose. Across his neck are scars indicating that Christians attempted to decapitate him but failed.
In Palmyra Museum there stood, at least until the city’s recent occupation by Islamic State, the mutilated and reconstructed figure of the once-great figure of Athena that had dominated a temple there. A huge dent in her once-handsome face was all that remained when her nose was smashed off. A recent book on the Christian destruction of statues focussing just on Egypt and the Near East runs to almost three hundred pages, dense with pictures of mutilation.
[...]
Certain sorts of musical instruments were censured and stopped: as one Christian preacher boasted, the Christians smashed the flutes of the ‘musicians of the demons’ to pieces. Some of the demolition, such as that of the temple of Serapis, was so terrible that several authors recorded it. Other moments of vandalism were immortalized in glowing terms in Christian hagiographies. Though these are the exceptions. Far more violence was buried by silence.
Christian writers applauded such destruction – and egged their rulers on to greater acts of violence. One gleefully observed that the Christian emperors now ‘spit in the faces of dead idols, trample on the lawless rites of demons, and laugh at the old lies’. An infamous early text instructed emperors to wash away this ‘filth’ and ‘take away, yes, calmly take away . . . the adornments of the temples. Let the fire of the mint or the blaze of the smelters melt them down.’ This was nothing to be ashamed of. The first Commandment could not have been clearer. ‘Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image,’ it said. ‘Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them,’ it continued, ‘nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.’ The Greek and Roman temples, no matter how ancient or beautiful, were the homes of false gods and they had to be destroyed. This was not vandalism: it was God’s will. The good Christian had a duty to do nothing less.
