‘Another mistaken belief is that the best way to cut greenhouse gases is to eat food that is locally grown. There might be good social and cultural reasons to buy local food. Local markets might help to enhance the food system market modularity and resilience. But there are seldom good climate reasons. This is because the greenhouse gases emitted by moving food are tiny by comparison to those emitted by growing it.
For example, if you buy pasture-fed beef or lamb, the contribution of transport to its total climate costs, depending on where it comes from, is likely to be between 0.5 and 2 per cent. Raising the meat accounts for roughly 95 per cent of its emissions (the rest are caused by processing, packing, storing and displaying it). You would have to ship a kilo of dried peas roughly one hundred times around the world before it’s greenhouse gases matched those of a kilo of local beef.’ George Monbiot, Regenesis: Feeding the World Without Devouring the Planet

Liv what did you struggle most with when you went vegan? I’m trying to cut out meat but I’m having a bad time 😭
ohhhh good question! i think i had an easier time than most ppl because i had a lot of aversions to meat and eggs unless they were prepared in v specific ways, and i don't like cheese and was pretty sure dairy was making me break out so i was already drinking non-dairy milk at home.
all of which is to say it wasn't a huge struggle for me to just make the few changes to transition to plant based!! i think the hardest part was avoiding the animals products hiding IN other things. ;ike pastries with butter! or eggs in cake! or modified milk ingredients in LITERALLY EVERYTHING. those little things were what gave me the hardest time, but now i just know what I can and can't have and don't really think about it very much—i promise it gets easier!!

Barbell overhead press: This exercise targets the shoulders, triceps, and upper chest. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a barbell at shoulder height with your palms facing forward. Press the barbell overhead, keeping your elbows close to your body, and then lower it back down to shoulder height.
Dumbbell bench press: This exercise targets the chest, triceps, and shoulders. Lie on a bench with a dumbbell in each hand, palms facing forward. Press the dumbbells up over your chest, and then lower them back down to shoulder height.

The problem with going to work events is that everything has meat and I’m mostly vegetarian and like I can kind of usually eat around it but I also don’t want to make a deal about it but also: not every dish needs meat

‘Livestock farming has displaced millions of indigenous people and destroyed billions of hectares of wildlife habitat. It’s political power is greater than its economic weight. As it rattled the gates of protected areas, governments in many nations have unlocked them.
In 2018, Brazil became the world’s largest beef exporter. Since 2020, when the United States lifted its ban on raw Brazilian beef, it is highly likely to have imported large volumes from places where the rainforest was illegally cleared by ranchers, including ecological and indigenous reserves they have felled and burnt. There is no requirement to label the meat as produced in Brazil, let alone in the Amazon: customers are kept in a state of ignorance.
Some of this beef is promoted as pasture-fed. People who believe this is a good thing either never discover, or tend to forget, that pastures were carved out of forests or savannahs.’

The whole world is obsessed today with cutting down plastic straw consumption. But the reality of it is, that if you take all the straws around the world, and you put them all in the ocean, that is still less than a tenth of a percent (0.1%) of the plastic that goes into the ocean every year. In fact, more than 40% of all the plastic that goes into the ocean is plastic fishing nets. - Vikas Garg in Let Us Be Heroes - The True Cost of Our Food Choices (2018)
