'Meme' is really, really old, dude.

We started with the coining of the word you'll find in the dictionary: a unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another

That idea of it being a unit of... culture stuff... was reused for the broad internet meaning of 'meme', which is viral gifs, images people reuse with different text, and the like.

Fandom evolved some specific uses of 'meme' for Journal comments-based repetitive activities. Kink memes are where people post top level comments with (usually kinky) fic requests and other people come along and write a fic in reply.

hey, so I did read your post about the paranoia of moral purity and responsibility of having a large following on here, and I swear I'm not trying to attack or demand anything from you. feel free to not publish this ask of you want. I'm just writing to say I think you should be more careful about how you frame ticks in your biodiversity posts. people being afraid of them is not a ridiculous or silly or purely aesthetic concern. the diseases they transmit are serious, often permanently disabling or even deadly, and still largely unknown by the general public. putting them in your original meme as a silly, harmless boogeyman is dangerous, it makes people already ignorant about the dangers feel safe, when they aren't. And adressing that with 'you can make a trap with dry ice' in a reblog really isn't enough, because that kind of trap is not 100% effective, and neither are other solutions. Ticks are absolutely something to be feared, and perhaps the most reasonable and important obstacle to consider when trying to restore lawns that people, especially children often play on. In the future, please consider using literally any other bug to make your point, one that isn't a deadly danger, and maybe acknowledge that danger with more than 'just make a trap its fine' when people raise concerns. It's fine if you don't know in detail how dangerous lyme is, most people don't. Chronic lyme is largely still considered a fringe diagnosis, and people often suffer for years before learning why they're sick. Just, please, try not to downplay the danger of ticks because the world already does and people need to be more afraid, not less.

I'm not framing them as a silly or harmless concern, idk where that's coming across? The first panel of the post is saying "a natural yard doesn't mean just having your grass turn into the sort of weedy overgrown environment where you'll get ticks all over you if you walk through it."

Judging by the number of comments on my post saying specifically that more "natural" yards are dangerous because ticks, people don't need to be "more afraid." Yes, I know about chronic Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses, but it's not a deadly threat to your life to have an area of your property that's a low-maintenance native plant garden or a grove of trees. Like, having vegetation around you doesn't make it inevitable that you and your family will get bitten by ticks.

Maybe this is gonna sound like "hurr durr where *I* grew up..." but a lot of the population does live in areas where they're in contact with woods and pastures all the time, and they've been adjusting their behavior to deal with the potential threat of ticks their whole lives. Not everybody lives and raises their kids in a house with a flat suburban lawn and nothing else. There are people that are hunters and farmers. Bug spray exists. Check yourself and your clothes regularly, minimize contact with thick brushy areas, wear long pants and socks, etc etc. The solution isn't to make people "more afraid" it's to make them better informed.

There are way more dangerous things in nature than just ticks! There are venomous snakes, other creatures that can carry and spread disease, even bears and mountain lions. Most of them will not harm you, barring unusually bad luck, if you are informed and vigilant about them

And I do think that—for lack of a better term, city slickers—way overestimate how much an untidy garden with lots of trees and flowers is going to expose them to ticks. It depends on the region and local environment for sure, but I've gone on long hikes in the woods or played in overgrown pastures and wooded places countless times with 0 bug spray and didn't get bitten. Like, not recommended, but in my experience it's not actually that easy to pick up ticks if you're accustomed to avoiding them. You'd have to actually partially submerge yourself in the vegetation for a garden to get ticks on you at all. Just having the native plant garden close by won't hurt you.

Ancestral chapter 16

Written for ectoberhaunt 2023 day 20: danse macabre.

The room was silent as everyone listened intently, straining to hear Mr. Kynbaz’s (his first name was Kevin?) response.  

"An extraction? Why?  Isn't she in hospital for a medical condition?"  There was a pause, not quite long enough for Joanna to interject, but long enough to hear.  “How do you even know about that?”

“You left the team on read and the emergency system kicked it to Matthew and your second, but Matthew has it set to forward things to family members if he doesn’t answer and it’s flagged as an emergency.”

Another brief pause.  “Why do you want Princess Alicia extracted?”

“We think that–”  Joanna visibly collected herself.  “There’s evidence that Revyvtech is involved in the poisonings and responsible for Alicia’s condition.”

“Joanna–”

“My judgment was poor as a teenager, but don’t you dare hold that over me when my family is in danger!” snapped Joanna.  She closed her eyes.  “I– I’m sorry, that was inappropriate of me.”

“What kind of evidence?  Would it hold up overseas?”

Joanna’s eyes flicked over Danny, Jazz, and their other cousins.  “No.  But that doesn’t mean it isn’t valid.”

Mr. Kynbaz hissed softly, the sound barely transmitted by the phone speakers.  “I���ll get back to you.”  

“Kevin, wait, I–”

The end-call tone played.  

Joanna let her hand drop to her side.  Her eyes flicked over Danny, Jazz, and their other cousins.  “How many of you have prescription medication?”

Everyone but Jazz and Danny raised their hands.  Jazz elbowed Danny.  “You have that stuff you were prescribed for your eyes,” she said.  

“Oh, yeah.”

“Danny–  Danny.  Do you think you could tell if this… if this poison - blood blossoms? - was in something?  Like you did with the aconite?”

“Um,” said Danny.  “Maybe.  That was mostly Gw– the ghosts, though.  They saw the poison being added.  If it is blood blossoms, though, I think I should be able to.  Or- or they should be able to," he added, glancing at the ghosts.  He didn't want to ask them to, though.  Not after what had happened to Gwensyvyr’s arm.  "I should be able to." 

“Good,” said Joanna, “good.  Everyone, go get your medications, and bring them here.”

"Why are there so many?" asked Danny, intimidated.  The little bottles practically surrounded him.  

"We're part of the oldest royal lineages in the world," said Iris.  "It'd be weirder if we didn't have any weird genetic disorders."

"What even are all of these for?" asked Danny, knowing it was rude, but not being able to help himself.  It was his family medical history, anyway.  

"Blood disease," said Iris and George simultaneously. 

"Specifically anemia," said Iris.

"Specifically Avlynyse recurrent macrocytic anemia," said George.  

“Called that because normal macrocytic anemia is supposed to be caused by something else, like hypothyroidism or alcoholism, but we don’t have those problems and it always comes back.”

“You guys probably have it, too,” added George.  “It’s super common in the family, but it.”

“Along with Avlynyse defective melanin syndrome,” said Iris.  “Purple eyes are pretty, but they come with problems, you know?”

“I knew about that,” said Danny.  “But you don’t take medicine for that, do you?  Mom has that, and I don’t think she takes anything for it.”

“Usually you don’t,” said George, “but melanin has a lot of functions beyond just skin, hair, and eye color, and sometimes ADMS affects those things as well.  You remember how Iris and I would, ah, shake a little, all the time?  And our eyes would scan back and forth?  We couldn’t stop it.  That’s what we take medication for.”  He made a face.  “We actually first got this in a drug trial from Revyvtech a few years ago.  It’s new…”

“Oh!  Don’t forget the epilepsy,” said Iris.

“Yeah, can’t forget the epilepsy.”

“You have epilepsy?” asked Danny.  “But I’ve sent you flashing videos… Memes…”

“No, no, Lewis is the one who has epilepsy.  I’m just saying it’s relatively common.”

Lewis made a face.  “I could have told him myself.  They’re only focal seizures, anyway.”

“I don’t know what that means,” said Danny.  “I’ve sent you flashing videos, too.”

“It’s fine,” said Lewis.  “Focal seizures don’t make you lose consciousness all the way, and I’ve got a filtering program on my phone.”

“Mostly he shows them to me, first,” said Leo.  “I have the anemia and a heart condition and low blood pressure and poor circulation and also eczema, which sort of makes my skin break out in hives if anything is touching it the wrong way for too long.”  

“Still not a good reason to not wear shirts,” muttered Lewis.  “Eugene?”

Eugene blushed, then looked down at the medicine bottle in his hand.  He looked back and forth between Danny and the bottle, then the bottle and Jazz.  The bottle was a slightly different color than everyone else’s.  

“Um,” he said.  “I have bipolar disorder.  And I have auditory hallucinations.  It’s not– It’s not schizophrenia, though.  I don’t have the other symptoms.”

Joanna put her hand on Eugene’s shoulder.  “I also have bipolar depression.  And anemia.”

Now Danny just felt bad.  “Sorry.  I shouldn’t have asked.”  (Also, wow, why was he suddenly thinking about the time his parents tried to ‘spin the crazy’ out of him?)

Eugene laughed a little.  “It’s fine.  I mean, we’re showing you all our medications.”  He held out his bottle towards Danny.

“Still.”  Danny took the bottle.  “But… have you ever considered that the hallucinations could be…?”  He trailed off as Gwensyvyr and the other ghosts started shaking their heads.  

“Oh,” said Eugene.  “No, definitely not.  There are ways to check if you’re hearing ghosts, assuming they’re cooperating.  We tested it.”  He sat down on the floor across from Danny.  “So.  How are you going to do this?”

“Um,” said Danny.  “I was just going to phase my hand through each of these and see if anything happened?  That way, I’m not screwing up good medicine by taking it apart or anything.”

“Is that safe?” asked Jazz with a slight frown. 

“I– Nothing has ever happened to the stuff I’ve phased through before?”

“For you,” clarified Jazz.  

“Might give me a burn,” said Danny.  “But the blood blossom cream is already out, so…  I’ll be okay.”

“If you say so,” said Jazz.

Danny nodded and held up Eugene’s bottle with his right hand and swiped his left hand through it.  

(It was so strange to just do that in front of so many people, and in human form.)

“Nothing,” he said, handing the bottle back to Eugene.  

“That makes sense,” said Eugene.  He turned the bottle so Danny could see the logo imprinted on the bottom, a simple eye with an apple in place of a pupil.  “Avl Ayg does more psychiatric medicine than Revyvtech.”

Danny nodded, and hunted through the bottles to find Joanna’s.  It also didn’t have anything in it that Danny could detect.

Then, he started working through Leo’s medication.  The heart stuff was fine, but when he passed his hand through the anemia medication, he flinched back, hissing.  

“Blood blossoms?” asked Jazz.  

“Yeah,” said Danny.  “Ow.”  He shook out his hand.  

Jazz held out the cream to him.  

“It’s such a tiny amount,” said Danny.  He examined his hand.  It wasn’t even red.  “It was just, like, touching something too hot, rather than all-consuming agony.”

“Your standards for all consuming agony are off,” said Jazz.  “Put on the cream before you do more.”

Danny grumbled but did what Jazz said.  Then he tested the eczema medication, and…

“This feels weird, but not like blood blossoms,” he said.  There was something ectoplasmic in it, but only in trace amounts.  “Could be ectoplasm contamination?”

“Could you tell how even it is?” asked Jazz.  

“No,” said Danny.  “Do you think…  If they are getting things for their medicines from Andyr, do you think that there could be ectoplasmic stuff down there?  From the ghosts, maybe?”

He saw Gwensyvyr’s face screw up, and she opened her mouth as if to speak, but then shook her head.  

“That would make sense,” said Jazz, slowly.  “But that would be incredibly dangerous.  Ectocontamination made a cooked turkey come back to life.”

“What,” said Lewis, flatly.  

“Never mind,” said Jazz.

Danny moved on to Lewis’s.  His anti-seizure meds were fine, but he had a jar of anemia supplements, just like Leo.  Again, there was something in it.  He set it aside.  

He moved on to Iris and George’s.  They had a larger number, but theirs were largely identical, so he did them all at once.  Again, most of them were fine, one of the melanin ones was weird, and the anemia supplement had blood blossoms in it.  

“These actually have more than any of the others,” said Danny, nodding at the bottles while rubbing more cream into his hand.  “It’s still tiny, the ghosts aren’t even affected by it being near, but…”

“But we’ve been getting slowly poisoned for who knows how long,” said Joanna.  “All of us.”

“It does cast some doubt on it being what killed everyone, though,” said Iris.  “Since none of us have keeled over in anaphylactic shock any of the times we’ve taken these.  It’s possible that there’s a legitimate medical use.”

“I don’t know.  I guess there are some things… Mom and Dad wanted to use it to purge ectocontamination.”  Danny looked up.  “Did Martin have this?  Do you think any of his medication is still here?”

“Maybe,” said Joanna.  “If he did have any here, it would probably be in his room, or the master bathroom.”

Getting everyone into the master bathroom was a squeeze, but no one wanted to be left out.  Joanna opened the cabinet and moved aside a woebegone toothbrush and a few boxes of band-aids before pulling out three bottles and a weekly pill organizer.  The organizer was mostly full, with only Sunday morning empty.

“Ferromultyx, melanyorata, and escitalopram?” she read from the bottles.

“Huh,” said Iris.  “I didn’t know his melanin defect was bad enough to take melanyorata.”  She sounded a little congested. 

Danny, not quite in arms’ reach of Joanna, between all the people in the room, made grabby hands.  “Let me see.”

Joanna passed them over, and Danny phased his hands through.  The melanin deficiency drug had the same weirdness as Iris and George’s.  The anemia drug on the other hand…

“There’s nothing here,” he said.  “It’s clean.”

Iris chewed her lip.  “None of this makes sense.”

“I think it does, actually,” said Danny, turning the bottle over and over in his hand.  He wriggled his way out of the bathroom.

“How?” asked Lewis, who managed to get out before the others.  “Why poison us just a little bit, and kill everyone else?”

“I don’t know that it’s just about that,” said Danny.  He put Martin’s medication on a nearby shelf and pulled the small bottle of the medicine he’d been prescribed from his pocket and passed his hand through it.  It burned.  Badly enough to make him hiss and drop the bottle.  

“Danny?” asked Jazz, alarmed.  

“I’m fine.  I just had to check something.”  He cradled his hand near his chest.  “I don’t think they want you dead.  They want me dead.  They don’t want you ectocontaminated.”  

“You guys keep saying that,” said Leo.  “What is it?”

“Ectoplasmic contamination.  Ectoplasm.  Ghost magic.”  Danny licked his lips, then stepped sideways to get a better view of Gwensyvyr.  “That’s what’s actually in Andyr, isn’t it?  There’s a source of ectoplasm.  There’s a portal.”

Gwensyvyr gazed at Danny for a long moment, then nodded.

“There’s something that happens in the Trials that makes you… more spiritual.  Or something.  More like a syvyr.”  And Danny hoped beyond hope that ‘something’ wasn’t dying like he had in the portal.  He could almost imagine it, all of them, all his family, walking, practically dancing down into the dark, into glowing, deathly green.  A tableau.  A danse macabre.  A memento mori.  Except no one really died…

… until now.  

“That,” said Danny, “that’s what they’re trying to stop.  They’re trying to keep that from happening.  Because if it did– if it did…”  He trailed off, unsure, then looked at Gwensyvyr.  Her eyes were sharp, expectant.  “Well, what we thought before, about them using stuff down there for medical research is probably still true, but…  There are probably parts of the Trials you can’t do without having ectoplasm.  Things for the ancestors.  Things for…”

If there was a portal beneath Avlynys, the ghosts here should be as strong as in Amity Park.  They weren’t.  But they were gaining strength from Danny’s presence.  

“Things for the portal,” Danny continued.  “Like, unblocking it or something.  Fixing it.”  He shivered, remembering the last time he’d tried to fix a portal.  

“A portal?” asked Joanna.  “To where?”

“The, you know, the afterlife,” said Danny.  

There was quiet.  

“Unfortunately,” said Joanna.  “We can’t do anything about that until we take the Trials.  Except for not taking any more of these things.”  She snatched up Martin’s medication and put it back in the cabinet.  

Leo groaned.  “Fainting town, here we come.”“For now…  I think all of you need some sleep.”

Ok so I just wanted to say this : I got some people telling me that I was arguing semantics when debunking the vid. And that worries me cause in media analysis, you ARE supposed to play semantics...

Which actually made me realize that most of the video essays on ytb analyzing supports or dialogue never really questionned why a character speaks in a certain way and how it conveys their personality, what does it shows about said character and the overall effect.

While there is not one way to analyze a media, in general the literacy ask you to try to ask yourself what something represent symbolically and that can comes through the use of words. Which is why I insist on using the jpn version for Engage. Each language has its own rules, system and own semantics with all the subtlelty and nuance possible. This is what makes translation so hard, the fact that you have to choose the right words to properly render the nuance of the original sentence without adding or removing in meaning. Even then, you can't rely on translation one hundred percent to study the writing of a media. Words are tools, and they create effects by creating meaning. That's why studying semantics is important and checking the original text is.

In japanese there is several words with different nuance that English can't take into account. You can say "I" by either using watashi, boku, ore, atashi, washi, ware/waga/ga, jibun etc. And all of those have slight different nuance due to the practice linked to those words, the context in which they are usually refered to and so on and so on. Each information transmitted by the text is important, the wording and how it is said, all of this are another way of showing something.

And also, taking into account the subtext behind a character's silence.

Take chapter 2 for example, in chapter 2, when Lumera told Alear she hoped they would view her as a mother like they used to 1 000 years ago, Alear remained silent and made a rather sad face, showing their uneasyness. This silent is playing into the many instance of foreshadowing in Engage, where Alear's lack of familiarity towards Lumera is apparent. Their awkward reaction comes from the fact that Lythos Castle and Lumera don't ring a bell and when you know the truth behind all of this, it all makes sense that Alear would not feel familiar with that place.

Yes I play with semantics, but playing with semantics is essential in an analysis. I know the meme of the "curtain are blue means nothing deep" made a lot of damage, but every choice matters. The "curtains are blue" means something : either it is linked to the mood of whoever choose the curtains, either it is a choice made by the author to create "un effet de réel" to quote Barthes, an element that might play later on, existing for aesthetic reason to create a sonority like Flaubert used to.

If you never try to look into a sentence, you won't obtain a deeper analysis and will only stay on a surface level.

ooooh~ Summer's End, for the ask meme

Ooohoohoo! Ok, so Summer's End is a little collection of one-shots inspired by a 'summer fun' prompt set on a Discord server I belong to. They take place before, between, and immediately after the first two big entries in Gunslinger's Paean, and helped me both repurpose ideas I didn't get to use in the big entries as well as shake off writer's block. I've been hoping to get these out the door soon, but they gotta both bake a little more and also get beta'd. In the meantime, please enjoy a little unvarnished snippet!

There was a reason Bane had been warned about experience on this climb. No trails were marked up this way, and magnetic ore under the planet’s crust played hell with most electronics. Dense trees with gnarled roots sprouted amber-red and thick, blanketing the sky and blocking directional stars over ground treacherous and uneven. Canyons split the path without warning and with few crossings. Despite the beauty, a lot of people died out here after taking the wrong step, unable to even transmit for help.

Was perfect. He’d long since memorized the maps, and he’d be left alone.

The woods stirred with only birdsong and his footfalls on his trek over the hours. Up he climbed, over craggy stones and sheer rock walls, through trees and streams, across golden grasses that crackled beneath his boots and smelled of fragrant earth. The color of the open, calm sky was the same color as his own skin, paled under the powerful yellow sun. He saw no sign of the herds, just as predicted. Few small life forms, nothing worth eating. And when he reached the glittering, vast lakes near the mountain’s midway point, nestled in a secretive forested caldera, he remained free of the blight of other people in his field of view.

Alone, the stark silence proclaimed, a vast dappled-bright space where sound entered and seemed to evaporate.

Only then did a series of stiff muscles between Bane’s shoulders relax, an involuntary release. He breathed the crisp, pure oxygen, the high-altitude thinness of it tingling up his veins and forcing his lungs to expand to full capacity.

Alone. Finally.

He set up his camp, gauging the angle of the sun, knowing he’d have five hours to catch something fresher than his pack rations. More than enough time.

But first things first, while his muscles were yet warm.

From deep in his bag, he drew a bit of contraband that could have gotten him targeted to hell and back on a lot of worlds, an artifact more valuable than most lifetime salaries and dangerous enough to kill:

Using this NK translation and this voice line translation btw! This post operates under RBGkoto and focuses on Redkoto specifically so if you aren't familiar with that then it might not make much sense ^^;

MeMe explicitly shows that Red is extremely depressed in his life, and doesn't at all enjoy what he does, but continues anyway because it's essential to Blue's safety. And now that he's been trapped inside of Milgram, that pain he feels has only grown, especially since he's failed to completely protect Blue.

Vriska is a no items/Final Destination girl, and Tavros’s ‘escapes’ probably feel like getting killed by a janky stage hazard. People aren’t allowed to win against her - even if, by her standards, it doesn’t count as a real win.

Given what we now know about her home life, any kind of loss probably sets off alarm bells in her head. 

That’s actually a good point. We haven’t really talked about gender on Alternia - I’ve been saving it for later on, when we have more cultural context - but all of what I’d call the most dangerous trolls are girls. 

The only exception - sort of - is Sollux. But his destructive abilities seem to be a outlier - and the only time he’s used them is when Aradia’s own machinations required it. He doesn’t seem all that dangerous by nature.  

Or even my sprite. 

I’m picturing the tech-flavored Midnight Crew sitting in Gamer Chairs on Derse, scanning everything on my land for vulnerabilities. Jack hates it - it’s such an indirect way to attack someone, that he cringes when someone even calls it an attack. 

What if you just straight-up prototyped an AI? It would be interesting to see how the kernel’s ‘intelligence-boosting’ effect which we saw with Jaspers would work on an artificial mind. 

My intuition is that even the best contemporary AI models would result in an inert sprite, but I do wonder if this could turn something that’s almost an AGI into the real thing. 

Maybe the fireflies are actually related to Sollux’s computing bees, and they also interface with technology in some way. 

I like the idea that they could act as data relays, blinking to each other in binary code to transmit data wirelessly. It’d be a good ‘biotech’ answer to short-range communication technologies, like Bluetooth.

He would do it. Not all the time, and not just for anyone, but he’d absolutely do it if one of his friends caught him in the right mood. You’d never know in advance how he was going to react, but if the stars aligned and you asked him to join in, he’d just stand up and start, albeit complaining the whole time. His dance choreography is perfect. 

Love it. That’s how I approach complex story ideas like this - just throw out all the ideas you have, and see how they gel with the evidence!

Nepeta is interesting to me, because, moreso than any other troll we’ve seen, she really acts like an early 2000s internet archetype. The fact that she actively roleplays suggests one of two things.

Alternia, despite the massive cultural differences between itself and Earth, has an online RP scene roughly analogous to ours. Do you think they roleplay as lusi?

Could be either, could be both. The fact that a non-corpse kernelsprite is rare suggests that something is actively preventing it from happening, but I guess that could just be good old-fashioned predestination at work. 

Maybe the Harlequin's mischievousness is just how the ‘usually a corpse’ rule was enforced in this case, and other sprites were discouraged from breaking it in other ways. 

One Homestuck fanfic (in Russian) called "metatime" what you call "Pebble Theory". Traveling though time is predestined by metatime, but some entities with super powerful control over time can theoretically change the metatime itself, from a hypothetical previous iterations of events. [] - RM

‘Metatime’ is a good framework to understanding a lot of time-travel plots, I think. It’s a good example of how a simple change in perspective really can drastically aid your understanding of a concept.

Lovin’ it! One thing I am looking forward to is, when I’m finished the comic, looking back on the original reactions and theories when the comic was posted live. It’ll be fun to compare my interpretations to other people’s. 

It’s another one I’m kind of happy I didn’t guess. It’s fun to be thrown for a loop in this comic, especially when it’s with a twist that makes total sense in hindsight!

Granted that this is referred to threads, I will limit my answer to that and not include memes as that would warrant an entirely different response. One of the reasons why I adore threads and I'm so heavily thread-driven as opposed to meme-reliant is because I base my answers on the feelings the reply in question transmits me and how I tie it in a cohesive way to Dain.

Sometimes when I have a line of dialogue that comes in the spur of the moment after reading the reply for the first time I'll type it in the tags, or if there is a small description or words I want to use that will serve me as a guideline later and I find too good to go to waste if some time passes until the next time I read the reply again to answer. Because yes, reading the same thing in different moments can stem different replies, too.

What's the norm for the majority of times for me is that I simply read the reply, draft it and as soon as I get back to it (fairly quick unless time restrictions, but threads are always the go-to first for me), I read my RP partner's reply again and then I get to write. I don't need more than that and threads come really easily to me because of the context given and, as I mentioned earlier, because they transmit to me more than lines of dialogue or actions without context can.

Basically Levi said out loud "what I am enjoying the most from the surface is fucking "someone " who is a virgin,"

Later on YN says she didn't get the joke and she hasn't seen him "eating cherries" (because she's thinking in the actual fruit and not the act of "cherry popping")

Levi, already having a blast, replies "maybe it was too dark and you didn't see me" referring that when they "slept" or "mess around" it was night time and, also, that he was between her legs so "maybe she didn't see him,"

Ziv communicating that she is in the mood usually includes her walking over to the person who showers her in pheromones to ask : "Hey, big guy, you up for a kriff in the backalley?".In General for a alien like Ziv who relies on her sense of smell more than anything, it is usually very clear when someone is attracted to her through the pheromones they automatically throw in her direction. And its that pheromones that make her usually start beeing physically attracted to them and get in the mood. However she is also very aware that just because someone wants her, it does not mean that they will act on that want .So if she clicks with a person, she will become maybe more attentive and more flirty but she will wait for the other person to initate anything that goes past words and flirtings, because she is very insecure about communication and does not want to overstep any boundarys the person had set for themself. This might be frustrating for partners.

That Ziv is polyamorous seems to be not especially uncommon in her species.).

Which results in the question of: how does Mother nature make sure that the planet Tynna does not suffer from Tynnan overpopulating? By giving the Species Tynnan the female weasle-problem. Which means that if a Tynnan with a Uterus goes into a heatcycle they will overproduce estrogen until the production is stopped by the hormonal change after a feterlization. If that feterlization is not happening than the estrogen overproduction will not stop and the person will start to get sick and eventually develop bonecancer and die. As in:Mother nature proceeds to do populationcontrol by brutally and painfully killing 50% of the population of Tynna as soon as that population becomes around ten years old before they are even fully grown mentally and physically. Especiallysince Tynnan social structure is (actually canonly) socialism, so every person born is educated and supported in the same way so they can serve the community themself eventually. So having 50% of the carefully raised and lovingly educated population suddenly die off in the socialism-based-system is kind of a very big problem. You just spend ten years of love and money and care in educating and raising that people to be independent, smart and social pillars of your community. And you are only half way throught with that education, and they are not even fully grown yet!

Now it happens that Tynnan are not only brutally social aliens but also very smart people, so the first thing they learned was to shut down through hormonal changing medicine (First herbal and the alternative-aligned-people probably still use herbal versions although there are now chemical alternatives) the heatcycle in the people they had spend the last ten years lovingly raising and educating so they can support the community with that education and care. Accordingly in modern age on Tynna the process of getting pregnant is still dangerouse for the poeple deciding to become pregnant because they risk their health, so there are not many Tynnan who decide to actually become pregnant. For example in a mated group of six Tynnan, maybe one Tynnan with a Uterus wants to have a litter for all of them to raise together. A group of mated people will usually seek out a midwife to lead the member of the group who want to risk pregnancy to have litters through the process. As Tynnan are also highly beurocratic this process also includes a lot of forms and applications through which the midwife helps the mated group,so the group can get the proper free medical support. As this also needs weeks if not months, this applications also are a extra safety measure to make sure that the group takes every proper safety measures. It is a normal process and nolonger lifethreatening, but there is still danger and Tynnan as a species are pragmatic enough to not let luck decide.

Accordingly Tynnan might have big litters of up to six kits in a mated group, but they have a very low birthrate and reproductive health is since before the Tynnans stoneage a very important topic.

That Ziv focused her medical studies on midwifery is actually suprisingly in line with one of the most widespread and respected jobs in the Tynnanspecies (including one of her Sires), because its so very important to keep over 50% of the population healthy. Yet Ziv never learned that aspect of her species culture. In other words: Yes, reproductive health plays a big role in Zivs life because otherwise she would die very fast very painfully. And she really does not want to die that way.

Also Ziv is a Healer specialised in Midwifery, so its not only her own reproductive Health she has to be informed about but also that of all her patients including their species so one could say Ziv is a expert in reproductive health.

Can she reproduce? If Ziv would put off her herbal medicine and wait a few weeks until her system has stabilized her hormonal cycle, she would start to have a heatcycle again and in that manner, yes, she woud be able to reproduce as soon as she stops beeing "springless".
