Sherlock is complicated. A simple way to put it I know. But Sherlock’s emotional comprehension is...very badly flawed. Sherlock doesn’t understand emotions particularly well outside of cases. Even in cases , it’s not that he understands the emotions themselves well , it’s that he understands how people will react. People keep things because they’re sentimental , people will go to familiar spots when angry or sad or lonely , people will rely on birthdays & anniversaries of something for passwords. He understands people kill for love , for hate , for revenge , he understands all of these sorts of situations , but it’s because they’re through the lens of a case. He’s picking up pieces and solving them and that’s just another piece.
It’s why he struggles so much when it comes to personal emotions. He’s very head over heart , logic over emotions. His life revolves around his cases and his intelligence. He’s been called a machine , a freak , and so many other cruel words from other kids or parents at a very young age that it’s normalized to him and he unconsciously locked away his emotions as a kid as a way to cope. As he grew older , his intelligence became what he excelled for , even if it caused problems. He never socialized like others because others were afraid of him. That he could tell so many personal facts about them just from a twitch or glance or their clothes. And kids don’t know any better , they just say things. Sherlock was one such kid who’d call out lies , cheating , etc without really understanding because he was too young to understand the emotional context of these things. So he grew up without friends and very isolated. He really only had Mycroft.
As such , he’s very emotionally stunted. He does feel , for example with @parieha ‘s Arsene he cares very deeply and loves very much , but he doesn’t always know how to explain it or show it. He doesn’t talk about it , and neither does Mycroft , so he’s never learned. It’s also why he can play dead for a few years without being too upset. Yes , he misses , but it never really occurs to him in emotional context. He figures they’ll be upset of course , but for Sherlock he’s doing it for THEIR safety. It’s logical ; leaving a message or sign could give it away to Moriarty or Moran or anyone else. He wants to protect them and he does it the best way he can. But he doesn’t necessarily understand the full extent of the emotional impact. He knows people grieve loved ones , he knows they’ll be upset for a certain amount of time , but . . . he doesn’t have a reference for it really from personal experience , and years of being labeled nothing more than a freak , a psychopath , a killer-to-be despite being a detective , it definitely eats at him in some ways. They won’t be as sad its him versus a parent or someone else.
But at times , Sherlock KNOWS he doesn’t understand. When people do kind things for no reason , he doesn’t understand. When Arsene is romantic and sweet and Sherlock wants to show or do something in turn but he doesn’t understand how. It FRUSTRATES him. He wants to and he doesn’t know how , he doesn’t know how to say it either. He’ll tend to start looking helpless or sad when those thoughts rise. But he also can’t just go see someone like most people can because Sherlock will pick apart everything about a therapist or others. It’d have to be someone on the same level like himself and Mycroft and Moriarty but no one at their level ever does that. They’re all flawed in some ways. Government , criminal , detective. It’s something he does know but he doesn’t know what to do about it and there’s times it hurts. It also means when Sherlock does break from loss or failure or anger , it tends to be very violent and intense emotional break down. Throwing papers , throwing cups , crying , drugs , something , anything. Because it’s the only way Sherlock knows how to get it out. Much like a child , and it’s painful to watch how he struggles and fails , to see him break like that because it shows how deep Sherlock’s emotional stunting really is. If it isn’t violent , it’s very reclusive , which is how he deals with loss ( sometimes after breaking down , sometimes its straight to this ) , guilt , etc. Not eating , not sleeping , playing his violin for HOURS until his hands hurt and someone has to coax it from his vacant expression.

the most unintentionally canon thing i’ve done in my time writing sherlock is never mention any of his family besides Mycroft. Because in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works ( and indeed most other works ) , Sherlock never talks about any of his immediate family and only once mentions unnamed ancestral positions in society and his grandmother once. so if you ask him , he probably won’t answer unless it’s about Mycroft.

The fact people close to Sherlock will at some point probably be at a crime scene or around crowds and have to listen to the things people say about him is oof. Because lots of people respect Sherlock , especially those he works with frequently or people with high profile cases. But there’s plenty of average officers and lawyers and journalists and academic people who are just mean and cruel and he just takes it without batting an eyelash. And if you grab him , ask him why he tolerates it he just ????? I’m used to it ? Just ignore them. and carries on like its nothing when it should be something but it isnt.

What people expect with sherlock: Completely on the side of the law , super formal , very intelligent , always willing to help , genius able to take care of anything , organized
How sherlock really is: breaks the laws as he sees necessary , rude/blunt to any and everyone ( unintentionally at times ) , insults the police’s intelligence , doesn’t like dealing with people unless there’s an interesting case , drug user , forgets to eat or sleep or go outside , literally throws/puts things wherever so its all disorganized , if he’s not hired to catch you he really doesn’t care ( unless you’re murdering )

Where would your soulmark be in Illuminated?
You would probably have a Forehead Soulmark!
Those who bear the forehead soulmark are innovators, thinkers of the future, and open minded individuals. Their love for learning and exploring their world inspires others to do the same. Ever curious, they question more than they answer.
These soulmarked people have no time for nonsense. If you’re not helping them, you’re in their way. Their ambition to discover and reveal the truth often makes enemies, but they welcome the debate partners who are willing to put up with their company.
Often considered hermits, those with forehead soulmarks are rarely at social gatherings, and if they are, they are usually off by themselves observing. They are hard to get to know, and patience is the key to opening them up. However, once befriended, forehead soulmarked are loyal and dependent friends.

Also , Sherlock composes specific violin pieces for specific people. Does he tell them ? No. But if you look at his music sheets , they’re literally titled ____’s theme.

Sherlock keeps a photo of Irene Adler in his apartment. It’s small , and most don’t notice. Especially because he basically never cleans and its just stuck on a shelf with a bunch of other things that take up space. Even Watson doesn’t notice. But Sherlock knows. He’s very aware of it. But she’s one of his worthy opponents that he will admit his loss. One of a kind , THE Woman.

( HARD CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT QUESTIONS )
14. Does your character remember names or faces easier?
Sherlock remembers both easily. However , I would say he remembers faces , or rather features , easier than names. And this is due to the fact that Sherlock puts more emphasis on facial features. Names can be changed , but there’s some things that are dead giveaways , be it habits or certain physical features. This ability to recognize people despite name and accent changes is what makes Sherlock such a dangerous opponent. No matter what disguise or alias someone uses , Sherlock remains hot on their tail and can almost always identify them.
Names would likely be easier for Sherlock to memorize , but they are of lower significance than recognizing someone’s face or physical features.

Can i talk bout how important this is to Sherlock though ? also the note that its Cardia calling him Sholmes still. We know his real name. smh. ANYWAYS the point is regardless of what version of Sherlock you look at , THIS VERY POINT is something crucial to Sherlock. He SHOULD be alone in his eyes.
No matter how emotionless he pretends to be , no matter how much of a ‘ machine ‘ or how ‘ heartless ‘ he can seem , he IS very human. Because he blames himself for everyone who gets hurt around him. And they DO. Police , Watson , no matter the story , no matter the media , those close to Sherlock get hurt. Because he’s Sherlock , he’s the detective every criminal despises because he can beat them. Moriarty doesnt despise him but that’s because they’re two sides of the same coin and thats a talk for another time. The point is SHERLOCK BLAMES HIMSELF FOR EVERYTHING. When it comes to others being involved , that’s a burden he carries. Mary’s death ? Another burden he carries.
Sherlock is painfully aware anyone close to him WILL be put into danger. So he tries to be alone , he tries to stay away from people and not become emotionally attached. But he can’t help slipping up and forming at least a few close bonds to people. And they get hurt and every time it breaks Sherlock more and more. Sherlock doesn’t care much for his own life when it comes to criminals , but he does for others. And they are getting hurt becase the KNOW him , because they’re CLOSE to him. And he feels guilty over wanting to still have those relationships , he feels guilty that he wants to be close knowing what will happen. If only he was as heartless as everyone said , if only he didn’t care about them , then no one would ever get hurt because of him.

* PERSONALITY TRAITS - ft Sherlock & Lucifer
RATIONALITY
You like clarity and intelligent simplicity and you get frustrated at messy thinking. This can make you seem unreasonably pushy to some, but it is actually a virtue: you are motivated by a horror at pointless effort and a longing for precision and insight into how things and people work. Your ability to synthesise and bring order is essential in producing thinking which is truly helpful.
MISANTHROPY
You have seen the darker side of human nature, even in daily life. When you look beneath the surface everyone is pretty messed up; there’s more selfishness circulating that others admit. You are never surprised by the stupidity of others, even though it annoys you. Your streak of misanthropy is, in fact, a requirement of remaining sane. You’ve wisely come to terms with your need to sometimes confidently reject people.
AGGRESSION
One part of your character is anger in all its forms: frustration, outrage – and when anger is suppressed – bitterness, grumpiness, and bodily aches. Fundamentally, frustration comes from hope: you get upset because you expect your life will be more than a valley of tears. One way to deny aggression is to direct it inwards, as self-criticism. But you’re at your best when you acknowledge anger, and act it out clearly and in a focussed way, with honour.
AMBITION
You have a strong sense of potential and an intense drive to accomplish difficult things. The core of this is your ability to hold together the big goals and the daily efforts. Where other people’s hopes collapse when they encounter the tedium of the journey, you keep coming back. Oddly, it is actually your ability to endure feeling unheroic that counts. You know the power of working away solidly on what’s in front of you. For Ambition:
INDEPENDENCE
You don’t set out to be different for its own sake; you are more easily guided by what interests and moves you. You are more concerned about what is right for you than about the pressure to fit in. In sex you are more aware than others of impulses which are not entirely conventional. You know the value of selective irresponsibility, of forgetting occasionally about being ‘good’. For Independence:
RESILIENCE
You have a tendency, after a setback, to turn your emotions towards restriving. What attracts you is the idea of wiping out a humiliation by resumed action – overcoming weakness, repressing your fear. Because part of your motive is pride, you can sometimes be unwilling to admit weakness or to receive aid. But at heart, tour insistence on coming back and never folding has taught you a valuable pessimism: you know that important journeys are never easy.

Sherlock has a past with drug use and abuse, specifically cocaine in 7% solution via syringe. It helped provide an escape from his own mind so he could zone out and not have to thing, or “ helped “ him through dull times. At certain points it spiraled out of control. However with help he was able to manage and control and get clean from it. That said, during especially boring times or when his mind gets too loud, the old urge might surge up though he still resists the urge. But, extreme situations can cause him to slip back to find that peace and escape.

SHERLOCK & MORIARTY
Okay so , most know that I pull from both Sir Arthur & BBC’s Sherlock’s as further inspiration and characterization on Sherlock from Code:Realize . But listen , listen . In a way , MORIARTY BEATS SHERLOCK EVERY TIME. Sure , Moriarty might die or his plan might be stopped by Sherlock. But the thing is ? Moriarty will ALWAYS live on in Sherlock’s mind. Even if Moriarty dies in front of Sherlock , Sherlock can never FULLY trust it because what if it’s just another faked death ? What if he’s still there ? The smallest reminder or reference can have Sherlock on full alert. He can never be at peace because even if he can’t see a way to fake it , that doesn’t mean there’s not a way. Moriarty’s gained a sort of immortality in Sherlock’s mind , inside his mind palace like a demon prowling the halls. And let’s not even START with the nightmares , or the hallucinations when he uses drugs.
No matter what Sherlock does , no matter how many cases he solves , dead or alive , Moriarty haunts Sherlock. Because they can and do think like each other sometimes , and Sherlock LOVES the Game. As terrible as it is , there’s a thrill to go against someone who intellectually challenges him in a way most of the world simply CAN’T. They understand , they both love this game against each other because otherwise they’re both so BORED in this world unable to keep up with them. They’ve played the game so seriously , so long , that Moriarty’s permanently left an impact and mark on Sherlock. And Sherlock HATES him , but in a way that he also knows he wouldn’t be the same without Moriarty having been in his life , and Moriarty can ALWAYS get his attention. Before any thieves or government conspiracies , before any murder or missing painting , it’s MORIARTY. Because THAT’S Sherlock’s greatest enemy , the enemy that’s permanently found a residence inside his head , and what’s worse is that Moriarty KNOWS it . Just like he knows Sherlock feels afraid to let anyone close because they always , always get hurt , like Mary.
