« If anything comes to mind, don't hesitate to contact us. » « I know how this works, » Kyoko grumbled.
Hawks sighed. He suspected that the attack had been fatal to the young policewoman's morale, but it hadn't helped her character, which was not at all inclined to cooperation. The winged hero then glanced at his companion: his spitting image in younger form... His son, Haru. He resembled him in every way except that he looked a little more serious at the same age. The latter seemed to have lost nothing from the exchange and a thousand ideas were already brewing in his head, Hawks could see that. He smiled a somewhat proud smile, just enough to avoid being noticed and to break his professional image.
« It was clearly a warning. Your family has been placed under police protection. If this group ever tries to attack them, we will be the first to act, » Hawks assured. « They don't know my sister...» Kyoko muttered with a smile.
This time it was Haru's turn to smirk.
« And let's hope they don't know her. Anyway, give us a call if anything comes up. Get well soon, Miharu-san.»
Kyoko exchanged a glance with Haru for a moment. They seemed to understand each other but didn't go into details, at least not verbally. The meeting was over and the Takami were about to spread their wings, heading for the upstairs balcony when Heisuke and Shin walked up to Kyoko's room. Shin gritted his teeth. Hawks was already high in the sky, his red wings carrying him when Icarus stopped short of the boy.
« I- » Shin began. « Haven't we met somewhere before?! » exclaimed Haru, his avian eyes looking curiously yet harshly at Shin. « I-... it depends! If it's between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. .... Trade with my lawyer. Oh, here he comes now! Oh Kaji-san! »
And so, like a cat and a dog looking at each other, Kaji and Haru seemed to hate each other. No words were exchanged. It was as if the sun met the moon. Icarus looked at the young Shin one last time and spread his golden wings, one of them made of metal. He rose into the air and disappeared into the night. Heisuke and Shin, who had been holding their breaths until now, were finally able to release the pressure.
« Was it just me, or was there some kind of tension? » muttered Shin, livid. « What did you do to Icarus now, you moron? » asked Heisuke, white as a ghost. « Nothing, I swear! You don't forget something like that. » « Hey. You idiots, » Kaji's firm voice thundered.
The idiots in question straightened up at attention, as if in the army.
« Yes! » « Kyo asks to see you... If you tire her out I'll kick your ass, is that clear? »
The two boys seemed to hesitate for a moment, but after exchanging a glance, they decided to move towards Kyoko's room. Heisuke felt his stomach twist. Miharu-san was in a bad shape. Even without using her quirk much, he knew that she was a real force of nature, it was showing in her look, in her way of behaving with them. Something inside him broke, his heart perhaps, at the thought of seeing someone so strong having come so close to death.
Kyoto smirked as she watched the two young men freeze.
« Are you going to stand there like two idiots for long? Sit down, I'm not going to bite you, » Kyoko ordered firmly but gently.
They complied without further ado, but they remained as straight as spikes. Kaji stood at the entrance, arms crossed over his chest as if waiting for something.
« Boys, why the long face? I'm not dead. It takes a lot more to beat me."
The words did not reassure Heisuke and Shin. Both of them clenched their fists on their knees, as if to endure the situation. Kyoko and Kaji did not have time to look at each other for long. They knew that something was wrong.
"Miharu-san," began Heisuke. "If you had died that night, all our efforts to integrate U.A. would have been like a sacrifice. You took the time with Kaji-san to raise us up when no one wanted to hear about a bastard son of a villain. To die now… It's frustrating just to think about it. You haven't seen anything yet!"
This time, Heisuke's voice grew louder. He looked at Kyoko with eyes full of determination.
"Don't die before you see us at the top. Please!"
And in an almost synchronized gesture, Shin and Heisuke lowered their heads further into a formal, respectful request. Kyoko blinked in surprise, mouth agape. Kaji hid a smile and turned her head away slightly. Those kids had managed to nail Kyo's beak! he thought.

« In my office, now. »
The chief was adamant about his order. Kyoko followed him without question and opened her eyes wide when the door closed behind her. Someone was already waiting for them in the office and it was impossible not to recognize him.
« Chief... » « Hi, I guess you know why I'm here. »
An optimistic smile, big red wings and blond hair. The winged hero, Hawks was in the office of the Chief of Police and at the same time represented the Commission. Kyoko looked at her Chief, he was red with anger and she knew why. However, she stayed calm, the calm that would serve her later on.
« I think I have an idea. » « Let's get this done as quick as possible. Hawks, in the name of my department, I apologize for my recruit. Miharu-san's father was captain before and because of that, she thinks she can do what she wants. » « Yes, I heard about the famous captain Miharu! Lots of good things. He was a good man. » « He is. My father isn't dead, Hawks. " said Kyoko with an adamant voice. "As for my investigation... » « You're not a detective, Miharu. Now, hand over the files to Hawks. »
Kyoko gritted her teeth.
The Commission thought they were above detectives on this one because Stain was too important to be handled by mere policemen. Just because they didn't have the license to use their quicks freely didn't mean they were useless though. Kyoto's gaze held Hawks'. He smiled. This was the first time she had seen a hero and her image of him was not even close.
« Captain, can you give us a moment, please? I think this is going to take a moment. »
The chief grunted and left his office not without grumbling. It didn't take a genius to see that the presence of the winged hero was embarrassing him to the core. She stared at the hero for a few moments and his smile only got bigger. It was filled with benevolence that had most likely put many people at ease before.
« You are as stubborn as a hero I know. " he began. » « Don't start, Hawks. Not everyone may approve of the system in place, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're always villains. » « Is that why you won't cooperate? Because you think that the heroes are the system in place and that they don't deserve the trust that is placed in them? »
Kyoko gritted her teeth again. He was saying something that would almost accuse her of collaborating with the same people she was chasing and yet his smile was disarming. He then became more serious.
« You know that the world is not the same as it was when the league was active. The heroes are not the same anymore, otherwise why support two future aspirants to enter U.A? »
This time it was surprise that Hawks read on the young woman's face. He laughed rather proudly at her reaction and Kyoko shuddered as she felt the draft caused by his wings.
« How... » « Commission! And then it's not hard to see that underneath that cold looking layer is someone decent... Otherwise why hide your files from us? It is not because you are trying to hide something from us, but you want to do something good for society, like your father. In that you are admirable. »
Hawks held Kyoko's gaze, a thin warm smile still on his lips.
She found herself disarmed by it and the icy appearance she always approached with the other policemen faded a little. The winged hero's gaze lingered behind her, on her shoulder, but he looked her straight in the eye again.
« I'm not asking you to stop doing your job. I'm just asking you to step away... The Commission has been on this case for a long time. Heroes are still under the law. We can freely use our quirks to defend ourselves without it backfiring too much... But you can't. You would be seen as a vigilante, an outlaw. » « You are assuming that I would not know how to defend myself. » « Far from that ! » Hawks exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air. « But let's just say you can never be too careful. Those people you are following, they are extremist in Stain's philosophy. Compromise isn't an option for them. »
Kyo glared at the winged hero. Neither of them seemed to want to give up, motivated by the need to do their job. Was she hostile by nature and apprehension? Was she hostile by nature and apprehension? Was she hostile out of resentment of the world the heroes had left behind years after the One for All affair? Probably... It would take a few more years before trust would return. Fortunately, Hawks didn't seem to be one of the heroes who had started doing this job for the sake of the glitter. No... They had left the scene a long time ago. They had left first, so to speak, leaving the police overwhelmed. Even today, Kyoko and her colleagues were still suffering from decades of being protected by the deceitful society of heroes.
Finally, she sighed, admitting defeat.
« As you wish, Hawks. My files, I'll give them to you for the gesture. I'm certainly not going to promise you that my ears will remain deaf to the rumors on the street. Does that sound like a fair compromise to you? » Hawks smiled. At least he had half a promise. He knew, however, that they would have to stay in touch.
«  It’s good to know we still have people like you in the police. » «  I could say the same about you… I’m surprised you took the time to come to the station. It’s not usually a job heroes does. » « Well, it’s not like twenty years ago » Hawks said, scratching the back of his neck. « We don't have as many heroes as we used to… »
Kyoko did not question Hawks' statement. Japan would never again have such a low crime rate with the demise of the hero profession. Now it was a call to arms rather than a vocation. The glamour was gone, no matter how much people tried to persuade themselves otherwise.
« But I have faith in the future. I'm sure that future generations will take over. I am sure that future generations will take over, » Hawks finally admitted, being the eternal optimist that he was, a beacon of faith and hope.

Kyoko opened her eyes to see not the asphalt of a cold, soulless car park, but a ceiling of scrolling neon lights. Pain shot through her entire body, paralyzing her as she passed. The sounds around her were concerting her in a void. Where was up, where was down: she no longer knew. Suddenly, the darkness again.
« Yeah, pepperoni for me and for those two idiots, the children menu » ordered Kaji. «  What ?! Those ridiculous tiny pizzas ?! Kaji-san… Kaji-san, you are underestimating my stomach » almost cried Shin. «  No, I’m watching my bank account closely. »
And not a fuck was given because in the last minutes, Shin ordered 3 more pizza for himself with a big smile. Kaji grabbed Shin by the collar but he was already trying to have a conversation with a nice girl who just came with her friends. Meanwhile, Heisuke seemed preoccupied and Dabi’s son noticed.
«  Hey. For someone who’s party was for, you look like shit. Relax, they just gave you a chance to prove them you’re not a no-good son of vilain. Enjoy. » «  I know, and I won’t forget that - thank you again, Kaji-san. But I can’t keep thinking about their looks on me. Is this getting better ? »
Kaji looked the dinner sign as to think about it.
When Dabi was alive, he was a proud son, a proud civilian boy whose mom always made sure he wasn’t getting the news by accident at the TV, especially during the chaos with the notorious One for All. The name « Todoroki » was given to him only a few years ago… So could he give Heisuke a correct answer ?
«  Look kid. World is already a shitty place where everybody is just waiting an excuse to hate somebody else. I ate the floor a few times before and after my name was made… Famous. Even if you try to keep a low profile, they will always get you and beat you up like they were doing something good for the society. Don’t let them have that. Don’t let them think you’re weak and most importantly, don’t give them a reason to believe you are just like them. »
«  Was it the same for you ? » asked Heisuke with a cold look and yet, kinda afraid of the answer. «  No, it was… Hard. But I got lucky. I got someone to remind me I was something more. »
The image of his mother came to his mind, then Kyoko.
Suddenly, he felt his phone ringing. He missed a few calls because of Shin getting all excited for food but those stopped his heart. He got pale and they were about to eat when it was Heisuke’s turn to notice something was wrong.
«  Kaji-san, are you okay ? » «  Who’s Kichi ? » asked Shin with his mouth full, reading the name of the contact who called seven times. «  Kyoko’s little sister— »
Kaji stood up, listened the voice messages for a while and in a second, went out without a word. The rush of adrenaline made him forget he was with the two teenagers who followed him, asking him what the heck was going on.
«  Seriously Kaji-san, what is happe- Something is happening with Kyoko-san. »
They arrived in front of the hospital when Shin understood.
Kaji entered and asked the name. He was about to repeat it twice more violently when a young school girl came in.
«  Kadji… » she cried with the same mirror-like eyes as her sister. «  Kichi… How is she ? Where is she ? »
Kaji took her into his arms and she bursted into tears.
The two of them felt like a big brother and a little sister. At least that was what they were giving as an impression. Heisuke and Shin felt like out of place. They glanced at each other and Kaji heard Shin proposing tea he would take at the machine.
Heisuke approached near the corridor where the emergency were. He then saw a bit of the room where his senpai was. He also saw something yellow, something red and something black. He grabbed his head and recognized three pro-heroes well-known.
«  Kaji-san. This is bad… Heroes are in her room… »
Kaji looked at Kichi, shocked.
«  What the fuck did she saw. » «  I- I don’t know Kadji. I don’t know why heroes are in my sister’s room, I swear ! Mom and dad were taking vacations so I was the first family member they contacted but, but I swear, they told me nothing ! Is my sister is in trouble ? Did a villain did that to her ?! »
The last sentence was a mix of anger and fear and several people here looked at Kichi and Kaji as if they were dangerous, as if the mention of villains was still a scar on the society. Kaji felt that and tried to calm his almost little sister.
«  I don’t know Kichi, but I know your sister is a strong monster. She will be fine, you’ll see, you know her okay ? Listen to me » he added, taking her face between his hands «  Listen… She’s gonna be okay. Promise. »
Kichi nodded softly and took refuge, one more time, into Kaji’s arms.
He rested his chin on top of her head and watched as nobody was about to give him an answer. Meanwhile, he realized somebody was missing.
«  Where the hell is Shin?… »
Shin slipped a few coins into the dispenser and waited silently for the tea. He wasn't comfortable in this kind of place but today his mind was elsewhere. His violet eyes found his reflection in the glass and he gritted his teeth. A few seconds later, he hit the glass so hard that it shattered under his fist.
« Did you touch her ? Hisa, did you touch her ? I swear, if you did… » «  If I did, what ? Shin. » breathed a female voice in his ear. « Don't turn around. »
The young boy clenched his teeth again, his fingers so tight they clenched into fists.
« She was starting to ask too many questions so the boss sent someone for her. Don't tell me you feel sorry for the detective or that you've already attached yourself to this bunch of misfits. Worse yet, don't tell me you've forgotten why you got into this. »
Shin disobeyed and plunged his cold gaze into the eyes of a young girl, no older than him... About his age really. She was a head shorter, a cheeky and frank face. Her eyes were blue, her hair long and black, her skin as white as a corpse's. She was not wearing a uniform, just a dark coat, jeans and a ratty t-shirt.
« I haven't forgotten... But by going after her, you've blown the chances of Heisuke joining us. Frankly, you're pitiful in your thinking »
Shin then felt a hand go over his shoulder. She slipped a few coins into the dispenser in turn. The way she almost touched him seemed to make his blood run cold.
« Don't forget why you're with us, Shin. Or you can go back to the miserable hole you were dragged out of. If you die tomorrow, no one will miss you. »
The two young ones stared at each other for a long time. A silent rage turned Shin's heart upside down. Then he calmed down and smiled again.
«  Always so aggressive in your words, Hisa. Do as you please. I'll continue with the mission you've entrusted me with. But don't forget that the first one to risk his skin here is me. » «  How can we forget that? You remind us at least once a day, »  Hisa grumbled. « If the detective talks to the heroes, we expect you to inform us. Don't forget, tick-tock Shin »
And as if to illustrate her point, the chocolate bar fell behind Shin. He turned for a second and when he tried to say something back, the hallway in front of him was relentlessly empty.
«  Dude, what are you doing? »  asked Heisuke, coming up from the other side. « You look... pale. Are you okay? » «  Yes!... Yes, of course! We're not going to leave Kaji-san alone! »  the young boy exclaimed with a smile. « Did Kyoko-san wake up? Did we let you in? » «  No we... We just saw some heroes. But I think it's only a matter of minutes before Kaji-san comes in and demands an explanation from whoever is in there. » «  Ah... I see... And did you see who was in her room? » «  Hawks. It was Hawks... And Icarus. »  said Heisuke.

«  Fuck, where is that kid. » snarled Kaji, looking at his watch.
He had been very lucky to get a jury, to play on the fact that Heisuke was young and impressionable when he was actually a ball of nerves. But was he going to bother to arrive on time. Kaji had been waiting in the hallway for over an hour, nervous. Fortunately, he was not sweating like a pig, he hated it, in his suit to defend the young boy. That's when he arrived. Heisuke was also wearing a suit for his audience but was terribly uncomfortable in it. Kaji sighed for a long time.
«  Where the hell were you ?! I’ve been waiting for an hour now. You’re lucky not to be more late ! » «  I know, I’m sorry ! I would have been there earlier without this fucking suit. »
Heisuke grumbled again, his fingers trying to tie his tie but without success. Kaji rolled his eyes and removed his fingers from the young man. He knotted his tie, wondering how he could read and write without having put on even one school uniform in fifteen years. When he finished, Kaji put his hand on his shoulder and a silence fell.
«  Okay. Let’s go now. » «  Wait ! I just… I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for believing in me… Kaji-san. First time we met, you told me all those things and I didn’t get it. But… »
Heisuke looked over his shoulder and addressed his lawyer in a low voice. «  No one could understand me better than you... You're the son of a villain too and you didn't let life walk over you. I hope that one day I will be like you. » Kaji widened his eyes at Heisuke's words. He didn't imagine that he would make the connection, that he would be smart enough to do so after all these years of pretending that he had no connection... He was just "Kaji-san" and was named after his mother, not the famous Todoroki, not Dabi.
« Okay, let’s go now, Kaji-san. »
This time, it was Kaji who took his time to enter. It was not a big room like in the movies, but there was a judge who looked as hard as a stone statue. Kaji sat down and he saw that Heisuke was standing straight like a soldier waiting. He was nervous. Well, good. At least it gave the judge the impression that he wasn't messing with him. « Naoko Heisuke, fifteen years. Assault and battery, theft, contempt of officers... Well.No family and... Son of a villain. » The judge closed the file she had in front of her and plunged her cold gaze into Heisuke's. He didn't flinch, but he felt like his stomach was turning. Never before had he been in front of this type of judge. « Your Honor, my client is, as you can see, only fifteen years old. He is not even old enough to pretend to drive a car yet. You have read the file, but I will summarize it for you. It is true that Heisuke here was born to a father who is a danger to society and who has killed hundreds of people, but what you forget to read is that his own mother tried to kill him when he was still a child. And a few years later, his mother disappears, without a trace. Now you might think that it's over, but it's not. Not only does she leave him, but she leaves him in one of the worst neighborhoods in our city. As you know, Muscular has made some enemies. What choice does that leave a kid who should be out playing soccer. »
While Kaji was telling the details of the boy's life, he heard the door open. He saw Kyoko take her place at the back of the room. He suppressed a smile.
« And even though he is just starting to live, he knows today that his path is not a bad one because people will be there to watch him. Your Honor, I am not trying to convince you that Naoko Heisuke is not innocent. I'm trying to convince you that condemning him now would be a waste. »
Kaji thanked the judge for listening to him and settled back down next to Heisuke. « That's quite a speech you're giving us. But you know, I remember a young man of barely eighteen years who also lived with a beautiful family, a beautiful dog. A few years later, a villain found him and months of carnage followed. I think we all remember Tomura Shigaraki. It is out of the question to leave any chance to the dangers. I'd rather warn them than let them go free. »
There was a slight cracking sound. From the corner of his ear, Kaji heard Heisuke's fists clench. A rage was silently manifesting itself in his body, but he did not activate his quirk, as one would have expected from him.
As for Kaji, he was also boiling with rage but he contained himself in the presence of justice. He would help Heisuke, he had promised. « Your honor, if you raise a dog like a dog, don't be surprised if he behaves like a dog. A police officer vouched for Naoko Heisuke. He has left the slums he used to live in. He's working hard to get into U.A. This is not the way the bad guys start. If we abandon him now, then we are no better than the villains you strive to fight with justice. »
The judge looked at Kaji and Heisuke severely. Once again, the silence fell. Then the judgement came. « Naoko Heisuke, we give you one last chance to not honor your father's legacy. Fail and justice will catch up with you. Next case. »
Heisuke was speechless, his eyes wide open, nail marks in his palms. Kaji patted his client on the back to snap him out of his reverie and make way for the next trial. Once in the hallway, Heisuke received another, stronger, blow to his back.
« Look who finally made it!" cried Shin. "They didn't want you, did they?! » « How did you get in here? You of all people... » said Heisuke, raising an eyebrow. « Not bad for a start. Maybe you'll make a career, steam boy. » Kaji loosened his tie and smiled.
« And you, how did you get in here ? » répliqua Kaji. « I’m a cop, remember ? And I promised. You did a great job today Kaji. Proud of you. » «  You gonna make me cry » laughed Kaji. « He’s a smart kid, smarter than I thought. » «  Maybe because he is actually smarter than you at the same age. » «  Ah ah. Very funny. »
Kaji rolled his eyes but didn’t take it personally. He knew that was their way to communicate since always.
«  What are you going to do now ? Kid is out for now… And his admission to U.A is soon. Honestly, I thought you wouldn’t help that much, knowing your past with heroes and vilains… » «  I could say the same with you. Heard some rumors. About Hawks. » «  Shit… Yeah he… He came. »
Silence then.
Kyoko didn’t seem thrilled about it. Actually, she wasn’t about to say much but she needed to, considering her ton and expression. She was anxious. However, Kaji didn’t say anything.
« At least he keeps you out of trouble. » « Are you doubting, steam boy ? » « Hell no. I know you kick asses more than some heroes. I trust you completely. » « I feel better now. »
They exchanged one last knowing look. Kyoko felt her phone vibrate in her pocket and her smile faded to a more serious expression. «  Kaji » «  Go. I'll tell Heisuke that you got a case. You're just missing out on the victory pizza. » «  What a sacrifice. » «  See you later then. »
x x x
Kyoko walked silently but something familiar turned her stomach. A feeling of deja-vu, an uneasy feeling like the one she had experienced in Heisuke's building. When she got to the car door, she looked at her reflection for a few moments and her eyes widened. Everything happened in a fraction of a second. She stepped aside and the window in front of her suddenly exploded. « Who are you?! » she shouted, ready to draw her weapon. But an invisible force pulled it from its holster. Kyoko gritted her teeth, darkness fell in the parking, the lights flickered dangerously, giving her very little visibility ahead of her. « You think you're useful. » said a voice that broke her heart again. « You think you're making a difference, like the heroes. But you are nothing. I admire your tenacity, but face it: you hide behind a mask, like them. » « At least I'm not hiding in the dark, » Kyoko spat coldly. Kyoko had good reflexes but she was not prepared for this. Hawks was right to warn her but she was so stubborn that she didn't listen. She was about to throw a punch, thinking she had seen a shape in front of her for a quarter of a second, but her arm was suddenly countered and an intense pain seizing her shoulder. A rusty blade had hit a vein as her blood spurted out and before she could even counterattack, she felt a new pain in her lower abdomen. Again she let out a scream and felt her blood cover the ground where her knees hit. Then she felt a pressure on her throat that took her breath away. « Thank you for your services. » Kyoko clenched her teeth and grabbed, despite the pain and cold the arm of her assailant that she blocked and bit it with rage. Touched by a sudden wave of adrenaline, the young woman pulled towards her the person and gave her a punch well placed to the point of putting her at her level. She seized a sharp piece of glass and planted it in what seemed to her to be the throat. She shoved it down with force, hearing her assailant drown in his own blood... But before she could pull back her makeshift weapon, a new pain tore a howl from her lower back. « Once again, I appreciate your tenacity, Miharu. But it's time to give up now. » The shape in front of her disappeared, dropping the shard of glass to the ground. Her assailant plunged his blade even further into her back before pulling it out. Kyoko fell on her stomach, wading through a pool of blood, her breathing becoming more and more difficult. Finally, she looked up at a disappearing shape. « Kaji... » she whispered before closing her eyes.

Once again, Heisuke had just fallen asleep on a notebook in his small kitchen.
His table was laden with all kinds of detritus, from cans to spilled cans, dripping with unidentified liquid. He lived alone and wasn't a big fan of housekeeping, and why should he be? He hated this place.
Heisuke tried to dream, to remember the last time he had felt at home, protected and not fighting in the corner of an alley, showing his fangs like a stray dog to keep his piece of food. He remembered his mother's hand, pressed against his nose and mouth and holding his head underwater. Heisuke remembered the suffocation, the need to breathe, but the water was already in his lungs.
He also remembered the awakening of his quirk-muscles, the pain he felt as they began to cover his six-year-old arms. Heisuke dreamed of the night his mother had called him a monster.
" It will be a service to humanity to make you disappear. " her voice echoed in his head.
It drummed, amplified in a whirlwind when he finally woke up. Heisuke's eyes shone with a wet glow. He tried to catch his breath, but he couldn't. He knew only too well what was happening to him: a panic attack.
Heisuke fell from his chair and instinctively crawled against the wall in front of him. He pressed his back against it, drops of sweat beading on his back. Soon, it was his forehead that was dripping with sweat. He trembled, his fist tightened. Then the muscles began to cover his hand. The terror was soon replaced by intense rage. He then gave a huge blow against the wall behind him, and it fell into dust. But did Heisuke care? No. As if this gesture filled with rage had injected him with a calming effect, he gradually recovered his breath. Then he looked at his fist and grumbled. Muscles glistening in places like diamonds had covered the entirety of his fist. He had activated his quirk without really realizing it.
After blowing for a long time, the young teenager closed his eyes.
He deactivated his quirk and his face became more peaceful. He held his hand to his heart and was almost revolted at the feeling of losing control. Furthermore, he had just demolished a wall and for what? For a simple nightmare!
"You fool," Heisuke growled as he took his head in his hands. "
A cracking sound reached his ears. Heisuke looked up at the ceiling to see part of it collapsing.
He almost jumped when he heard the rain suddenly pouring into his kitchen, quickly drowning his belongings.
"Idiot," Heisuke repeated, now furious because he had just demolished his apartment! "
Tumblr media
"You look like you slept under a bridge," Kaji threw out. "
And indeed, there was nothing to be proud of about his condition.
Heisuke looked like he had spent the night under a bridge judging by the smell of his soaked clothes and the dark circles under his eyes. He wore a grumpy expression and grumbled at his lawyer's comment, placing his hands behind his head.
"What if it was? he said forcefully. It's not like it can do anything at this point! I just have to study to take the U.A. entrance exam and you guys are in charge of the presentation to keep me out of jail. "
"Stop with the bad boy attitude," Kaji ordered dryly but with a hint of recoil. Something happened last night, huh? How do you expect me to help you look presentable in the eyes of society if you show up in front of the judges like that? They'll see another street kid to send to jail and they'll be happy. Why don't you start by telling me why you're carrying around a bag of stuff with you? "
Heisuke frowned and looked away shamefully.
There was, indeed, lying against the counter of the dinner, a backpack containing some clothes and books he had managed to save from the previous day's flood. Kaji was not stupid. He had read the file of the young midshipman at U.A. He had come a long way, he knew that now... It was not a reason to be sentimental, he had to remain impartial... But to know that he had been victimized by the hand of his own mother had plunged Kaji into a cold anger. So he was all the more eager to help him, and he wasn't the only one.
"I destroyed my squat..." muttered Heisuke in shame. "
"You did what?... asked Kaji, afraid he didn't understand. "
"I destroyed my squat! The young teenager snarled. "
Some customers then turned to the two men.
Kaji signaled to Heisuke to lower his voice slightly. Heisuke's face did not show the slightest bit of pride, however.
"I... I activated my quirk without paying attention and destroyed my apartment. "
"How can you activate a quirk without paying attention? No, never mind... Kaji said to herself, running her hand over her face. "
Heisuke interpreted this as shame on the part of his lawyer. He became even angrier, but before he could say anything, Kaji interrupted him.
"You're going to come to my house. "
Time seemed to stand still. Had Heisuke heard correctly? Kaji had thrown this out as if it were a natural act. The words were stuck in the back of his throat. Before he could reply, Kaji said.
"I have to keep an eye on you, but I warn you, at the slightest broken glass, you get the hell out, and I'll give up your business, understand? "
This was of course an empty threat. Kaji obviously wanted to keep an eye on his client, but he also wanted, like Kyoko, to put him back on the right track. He certainly wasn't going to defend him, win and let him go as if nothing had happened! There was a conflict in him. He knew he had to be professional, but it was difficult for a first case. How did the others do it?

" On a scale of one to ten, how attractive do you think I am ? asked Shin with a pen between his lips and nose.
- A solid I don't give a fuck, replied a focus Heisuke. "
Kyoko hit him with a folded newspaper.
The U.A. entrance exam was about to begin and Heisuke's trial three days before. He had never been so focused on his life. He had totally deserted the street, to the great pleasure of Kyoko who was using her free time to bring him up to speed. She had never had the vocation to be a teacher, but with a little effort and by helping Kichi, her little sister, she had seen clear progress in a few weeks.
Shin, on the other hand, was a different story.
He had a good level, not having been dropped out of school, but he was sorely lacking in concentration. Where he got the money to pay the exam fees was a mystery. On the bright side, he didn't look like a bad kid.
" The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems," he said for no apparent reason.
- Are you trying to test my patience?" Heisuke asked with a tight smile.
- Of course I am. Why would I even be here if not to test you? A hero should always be tested under pressure. That's why he is always efficient during crisis!
- Shin, you are provoking a crisis right here, right now. The only for you to prevent it is to shut the hell up, replied Heisuke.
- I hope Kaji is having the time of his life right now... sighed Kyoko. "
- - -
" With all due respect, sir, I think that in view of the evidence, we can't send a child to prison because the DNA has spoken," Kaji decided harshly but respectfully.
- The reputation of this firm is at stake in this case. Don't forget that. If the press were to find out that we were defending offenders from the worst villains in the country, the scandal would be too much to handle. "
Kaji's urge to throw out "bullshit" was inversely proportional to the amount of hair his boss still had on his head. As good as he could be in his business, he had to admit that it was a first. He kept his composure and resumed:
"Even if my evidence is sufficient?
- Even if the evidence is fair. You rely on the testimony of passers-by, scum and extremists to defend a delinquent?
- A police officer will vouch for his surveillance. His quirk will be kept under close surveillance in the U.A. Aren't these sufficient guarantees for you?
- IF he passes the exam. Not everyone can become a hero, or they would know. "
Kaji restrained himself from making a bitter remark. He had admired the hero system as a child, but having learned about all the vices behind it, could he really say that he believed in it?
"Freelance then. Erase my name from the records and thus yours. Tanaka-san, you can do it, I know you can, it wouldn't be the first time. "
Kaji's boss widened his eyes. He stood up and quietly closed his office door so that no one would hear him. He then looked at Kaji from behind. The young lawyer heard his boss's snake tongue click on his lips.
"How do you know...
- It's possible. Let me present the evidence to the jury. No involvement, no scandal, your precious reputation preserved and a kid who finally has a chance at a future. And in a few years, when he's out of the U.A. and a hero in the eyes of society, your name will come up and you'll be able to brag about how you always supported him. What do you say, Tanaka-san?"
Tanaka seemed to weigh the pros and cons.
His years of experience had certainly not prepared him for a youngster straight out of the cradle to negotiate with him as a businessman would. He hissed snake-like one last time and settled back at his desk, signing an authorization and handing it to Kaji.
"Not a word to anyone. Even the kid won't have to mention your name. Make him sign a confidentiality clause if you have to, I don't care. Just win this case and don't mention it again.
- Thank you, Tanaka-san. "
Kaji bowed respectfully and took the paper before leaving the office. Once out of sight, he ran a hand over his forehead and let out a sigh of relief. To be honest, it had all been a giant bluff.
But still, the fact that his boss responded to this threat disgusted him. Was his job as corrupt as hero's ?

"One day Kaji. You said one day, not six hours.
- Are you complaining? Besides, who says I had anything to do with it? "
He handed her a coffee. Kyoko had just emerged. She was still a little tired, but Kaji was watching her from the corner of his eye. At the hospital, they would have kept her for 24 hours for observation, but he had her covered. Her job would have been done if it had been known that she had investigated on her own without the authorization of her superiors. Fortunately for her and to limit potential problems, she had not used her quirk.
" I'm not going to ask you..." she sighed and grimaced, putting her hand on her shoulder. I didn't want you to go alone. Look how smart I look now.
- A real genius. But you're the one who decided to knock on my door so take your responsabily, Kaji smirked. "
Kyoko smirked in return, her eyes in Kaji's. A part of her suspected what was going to happen. Underneath his workaholic, asthmatic, short-sighted and withdrawn lawyer looks, there was something else in him.
" Thank you for being here... whispered Kyoko.
- What was that ? I can't hear ya.
- Thank you for being here ! Having my back and everything. I know you don't like heroes and heroes-like.
- I signed up for Heisuke's case, nothing more. The rest is on your hands, that's your job. And part of it is also to stay alive.
- I don't promise anything, but I'll try my best, said Kyoko with a smirk. "
Kaji rolled his eyes.
"Sleep. You look like crap," Kaji then ordered. "
He stood up and before leaving, noted something he didn't like. He pushed Kyoko's hair behind her back and frowned. The gesture startled her, but she didn't say anything. She was slightly burned, and he recognized that kind of injury.
"Sleep," he punctuated one last time. "
He didn't even give her time to answer as he closed the door of the room behind him. Kyoko probably hadn't seen the state of her back yet, but the pain was there judging by her ache. He took out his cell phone and seemed to hesitate for a moment. This was not the time to lose focus. He had to concentrate on Heisuke's case. Moreover, unlike his friend, he had not signed up to get involved in stories of heroes and villains. No thanks, he'd leave that to the relevant departments and, somewhat by default, to the still-active heroes.
"Kaji-san? Is Miharu-san here because of me?"
Kaji then looked up at the young teenager with blonde hair. He had calmed down and let Shin pig out in the living room, but he still seemed a little tense. They glared at each other for a moment and Kaji sighed, running a hand through his hair and putting his phone away.
"It's her job to investigate. Don't let this go messing with that little head of yours.
- I know, but I'm... I'm ashamed," Heisuke said, looking away. People have always looked at me badly because of my parents. To say that it's because of them that I turned out like this is embarrassing. I barely know them, and it's like they've been ruining my life forever, and Miharu-san's by extension. "
Everything about Heisuke exuded shame, from his bowed head to his fists clenched into white. Kaji might be a lawyer, but he could sound very sharp in his words. He seemed to think for a moment and was tempted to hand the young teenager over to Kyoko, but then thought about it. Why had he become a lawyer in the first place ? When did he get the urge to help people, especially children ? Heisuke was like him except that he was not lucky enough to have an awesome mother and a decent father, although he was often absent due to his activity.
"We don't do this to have a quiet life, Kyoko and I. We do this because it's what any decent human would do. When Kyoko saw you in that interrogation room, handcuffed like a future convict, do you think she called me out of the goodness of her heart? No, she called me because it was the natural thing to do. I'm not going to lie to you: it won't be easy, but it could be worse. What I can assure you though, is that you will never be alone again. Kyoko has already paid for you to take the U.A. entrance exam, she wouldn't do that if she didn't believe in you. "
The announcement shook Heisuke, like a train being launched at full speed. His eyes widened, and he looked at Kaji in shock. The lawyer smirked at the young boy's expression.
"She has... Really? What if I screw up?
- Don't screw up," Kaji replied.
- But what if I screw up?!
- Don't screw up, Kaji repeated. You better get used to it. This is what it feels like to be a hero. People put their trust in you. "
Heisuke wasn't nervous anymore, he just smiled like crazy now.
He was proud and excited. At least now he knew what he was getting into.
" Watch me then. I'm gonna be fucking amazing. "
And with those nice words, Heisuke returned to the living room where he would go to study with Shin. Kaji only hoped he hadn't lit a flame that would get out of control.

Heisuke woke up with a headache, drooling on his book. He had started studying every night until dawn to catch up on his studies. Having met two people who, for the first time in his life, found value in his life, had lit a fire in him that could only be extinguished by pride.
Heisuke had always lived alone. The walls of his room smelled bad and it was not uncommon to meet a rat or two, but he was fine with it. One thing was certain, he hated math. He couldn't wait to get into U.A. to become a hero, to prove that he was better than the scum he was identified with.
He was about to go back to sleep when there was a knock on his door.
" Rise and shine, sleepy head! This is Radio Shin Todo, at your service for the day! The temperature is currently 23°c. The traffic is terrible and if you take your car, it will surely get worse!
- I'M COMING!" shouted Heisuke, making Shin giggle."
It was a horrible way to start the day. Shin was probably one of the loudest people Heisuke had ever met in his entire life. It had become a routine to leave the neighborhood to study.
" Do you think Kaji will be mad at us if we go on a detour to buy dorayaki?" asked Shin nonchalantly.
- I don't know and I don't care," replied Heisuke. In any case I don't want to come with you. "
An hour later, here they were downstairs at Kaji's, two dorayaki in hand. Shin was victorious! They knocked at the lawyer's flat but no answer.
" He must not be awake," said Heisuke.
- It's ten o'clock in the morning, and he doesn't even offer us anything to eat, !
- Do you have a black hole in your stomach ?! You just sent yourself a dozen dorayakis from here to my apartment, and you're still hungry?
- You never know! Well, if he doesn't want to open... "
Shin crouched in front of the door and pulled a knife from his boot. Heisuke frowned and slapped his hand against his forehead. Was this idiot really going to pick his lawyer's lock in the middle of the day with a pastry stuffed in his mouth? This was going to be an awfully long day.
"If we ever get stung, I don't know you," he said, not intending to stop his friend. "
But just as Shin was getting to the point, the door opened, revealing a puzzled Kaji. The two teenagers looked at the silent young lawyer, Heisuke white as a sheet, Shin with his knife in the air and his bean paste flowing.
" Hola señor, como esta ? panicked Shin.
- That was his idea, not mine, also panicked Heisuke.
- Whatever, jackass. "
Kaji clearly didn't feel like reprimanding the two teenagers because Kyoko would most certainly do it! (This was due to her big sister character). He went to his living room where a pile of files was waiting. Heisuke hit the back of Shin's head, who was not proud this time, and went back inside. When he saw the picture of his building, his eyes widened.
"This is my old apartment! Why are you searching this?!" asked the young teenager.
- Because you have to make yourself accessible to the guys who are going to judge you," Kaji answered simply, as he went to start his coffee. If we want to have a chance of getting the jury to not send you to juvenile hall, we have to tell them your story.
- You could have asked me before you did it... Heisuke grumbled.
- I don't think it's a stupid approach," Shin said, stretching out on the sofa. If they shed a tear it's even better. Heisuke, can you cry on command? I'll pay to see that!
- Shut up Shin!" growled Heisuke. "
Heisuke's sanguine gaze scanned the files spread out on the table. The pictures of the first place of his life hit his memory with a middle of memories. He recalled the hateful looks, his mother's hands holding him in the bathtub and the hunger he had experienced all too well. He clenched his fists and realized that all eyes were on him.
"So... The strategy is to elicit pity, right?
- You talk about it like it's war," Shin scoffed softly.
- Two years in an institution where you're being pushed into the mold, what would you call that, Shin?" asked Kaji.
The question nipped at her heels. Shin looked down, a little ashamed.
"Sorry. Yeah... I think it could work... After all, if it can keep you out of jail, you might as well enjoy it.
- Would you like your life to be exposed to a bunch of strangers?
- If it means I can survive, then yes."
Shin was strangely serious for once. Even Heisuke was surprised by this, but it should not be forgotten that behind this clown facade was a street kid who was surviving more than he was living.
It is then that he put on his face a radiant smile to break the atmosphere become too tense.
"Kaji-san, is it me or is it a woman's jacket?
- No, it's not a woman's jacket, it's Kyoko's. "

WARNING : Kaji is pretty savage in this one. I hope it doesn't shock anyone but this is Dabi's son we are talking about.
Kaji did not wait for the morning to go to the place where Kyoko had been attacked. This head of mule having insisted on sleeping on the sofa, he had waited that she was asleep to carry her to his bed, not without dropping a "savage" to her attention.
Taking advantage of the still cool night, he looked at the disinfected building. Strangely enough, he was not surprised by the connection between Heisuke and such places. Unfortunately, not all children grew up surrounded by loving parents and in houses with a nice white picket fence. The crunching of debris under his foot pulled him out of his thoughts. Kaji silently considered this place, bending down and touching the asphalt. This was where Kyoko had fallen. He was surprised that she hadn't had worse injuries and smiled.
"Bloody savage," he muttered to himself with perhaps a hint of pride."
He pulled himself together and entered the building where the smell caught his nose. His blue eyes scanned the hallway. He then understood Kyoko's feeling, the coldness of this place and the pressure that crushed your heart. He didn't do like his future detective friend and didn't knock on the doors. It was enough for him to follow this feeling of uneasiness like a hunter who tracks a prey. Kaji knew he was on to something when he ran his fingertips over bullet holes in the wall. "She's not giving up without a fight," he thought.
It was then that Kaji activated his quirk. A mist was released from his body and soon enveloped everything in its path, masking his silhouette.
The extremist was a few steps away, he could smell it, the smell of blood. It was foolish of him not to have set sail before someone came. He probably thought he still had all night, but he didn't know Kaji very well. He looked calm like this, but as soon as he saw Kyoko's wounds, a cold anger came over him. He was not a hero and even less a villain, maybe something in between.
The extremist, for that is what he was going to call him, let out a grunt of pain. His arm was broken and the other one still sore. That was probably why he hadn't moved. Feeling the sudden dampness in the air, he stood up abruptly and grabbed his sword with his good arm. Unfortunately, this was not his lucky day. The door slammed shut and the next thing he knew he was on his stomach on the ground, his sword inches from his face. Kaji grabbed his already broken arm and heard another crack.
" You hurt one of my friends," he said coldly.
- I said everything I know!" the now less imposing extremist shouted.
- I know. But I want you to tell me again. So start by telling me where your friend is, ordered Kaji forcing a little more on his foot to break more what was already. "
Kyoko's assailant let out a new scream that blended in with those of the residents of the neighborhood. Kaji did not give up.
"He ran off right after he threw the policewoman out the window. That bitch... He said he had more important things to do.
- Tell me again what you said to my friend or I'll attack the other arm," Kaji ordered. I'm giving myself some time with the one I'm holding right now. "
Kaji's hand then became extremely hot, boiling. If the extremist had been able to see Kaji, he would probably have been even more afraid.
"She was looking for Yuri Naoko. She's been dead for years. She died for a cause! The fall of the false heroes and like the others, when Stain will return, we'll put an end to their hypocrisy!
- So Heisuke's mother was a Stain extremist, Kaji muttered to himself.
- I've said it all! Now please let me go! I've said everything I know.
- I know you did. I'll find you again so don't you dare leave town. "
Kaji knocked him down and once he was sure he wouldn't wake up, withdrew his foot. He weighed the pros and cons for a moment. Denouncing extremists could be dangerous, especially with an accomplice still on the loose... But he had agreed to help Heisuke. He took out his cell phone and made a phone call, anonymously denouncing the bugger on the ground.

Three o'clock in the morning.
Who could be knocking at three in the morning? Kaji had lazily gotten up from his bed when he heard the knocks raining on his door. Slightly in a bad mood, he opened and received a slap in the face.
"Hey Kaji, can I spend the night here? She asked with a broken smile.
The young lawyer seemed to stop functioning for a short while and received a second mental slap when he caught his friend as she fell. He then thanked years of experience and his special childhood watching his mother nurse his father. Glancing down the street, he pulled Kyoko inside and carried her to the couch where he laid her down.
"You look like you've been under a truck," he said in a calm but internally alert voice.
- More like through a window to end up on the sidewalk, Kyoko corrected. "
She may have been smiling, but there was nothing glorious about it, in fact it was pitiful. Kaji slipped his hand just behind her head and a wave of cold relieved her pain. He heard Kyoko moaning as she clung to his arm, but it seemed to work as the pain gradually faded.
"You should have gone to a hospital. I may have some knowledge, but I'm not a doctor.
- No, I'm not. I was investigating Heisuke's case and got caught by-..."
Kyoko stopped dead in her tracks, just long enough to get the events into her head. She closed her eyes and Kaji started to worry a little bit more, his hand still trying to help her. It wasn't clear. The blow to her head didn't help.
" It was like facing one of those Stain fans," she breathed, shivering in horror. Not Stain himself, but it was just like his words. Someone attacked me from behind. Nothing to do with Heisuke, or maybe it is. I don't know, but the first person knew his mother. Shit, everything starts to spin. "
Kaji realized she was still confused, shivering, scared. Not a lot of things were capable of that. She didn't sign up for this kind of stuffs. It was heroes stuffs, not cop. That was just enough.
" You have to stop," Kaji said curtly. This is my business, I'll find out what's going on.
- Don't think about it ! It's too dangerous to investigate alone in the most naughty neighborhoods, you know that !
- That didn't stop you from doing it alone. Stay here for tonight. I'll see tomorrow what's going on there."
Shocked, Kyoko stopped Kaji when he was about to leave, holding his arm, her look fierce and stubborn as always.
" Don't be ridiculous, I'm not letting you go in there alone ! "
The two friends glared at each other, almost challenging each other to see which one would give in first. But they both knew they were too stubborn to give in and when it came to Kaji, Kyoko was uncompromising, she always had been. Kaji was the same way.
The silence was not broken by words. The young lawyer whom she always called steam-boy at times leaned over her. Kyoko blushed suddenly, but did not budge, still stuck to her idea. She felt his breath on her skin, and he kissed her forehead. This simple gesture broke her for a moment.
"A "please" will not be enough? he ironically said.
- Not a chance...
- Give me a day. Then you can go back to being a hero as you like. "
Kyoko closed her eyes and grabbed Kaji's top as if to threaten him. He did not move. He let her make the pros and cons. Finally, she nodded.
"I hate you...
- I know," Kaji replied with a smirk. That's why you bother to keep me around. Take a rest, detective. "
Kaji straightened up and headed back to his room, leaving Kyoko to lie back down, exhausted but with her eyes still fixed on her friend of all time.

Disclaimer : please make sure to read The lost boy, You know how to take a punch, wanna be a hero ? and No rest for the wicked as prologues of the story and also the work of the lovely Isidearie for some Kaji's past (especially with his dad!)
The heroes had truly abandoned this area.
It had been more than ten years since the multiple escapes from supervillain prisons all over Japan and yet, in some places, it was as if nothing had changed. It was both revolting and normal in a way... Revolution wasn't made in a day and there were always "after" the chaos. Here, it was as if time had stopped.
Rot filled the air and gnawed at the nose. Order was long gone and no uniformed policeman dared to set foot in such a desolate neighborhood anymore, yet Kyoko did. Reading through Heisuke's file quickly, she had traced him back to his birthplace. The description was vague, but she knew the city like the back of her hand and her father's experience had been a great help.
Of course, she hid her temporary badge and her face in a hood so as not to risk being recognized. She looked up at a building that was close to collapse. No more sounds from the street, but screaming, banging on the walls and arguing. The smell lingered, but we had just gone down a notch to hell.
" Excuse me, ma'am? Can you tell me where Yuri Naoko is ? Kyoko asked to the old, toad-like resident. "
The latter was carrying perhaps the equivalent of a wardrobe on her back and still looked chilled. She stared at the young policewoman from bottom to top before answering:
" No Yuri Naoko here. Not for years, go away if you value your life. "
The old lady abruptly closed the door of her dilapidated apartment behind her. Kyoko looked up to the sky before murmuring "Nice neighborhood". She walked down the hallway, counting her steps when it got too dark. Suddenly, a stench reached her nose. She put her arm against her nose, grimacing, before putting her hand on her service weapon, for safety. This place had just gone from bad to scary in the space of a second.
" Is anyone there ? Kyoko announced as she slowly moved forward. "
One more step and the floor cracked. Kyoko inwardly grumbled for a second, but her survival instinct was suddenly awakened. She stepped back quickly to avoid the rust of a sword at her neck. Her back hit the ground behind her and she drew her revolver before shooting straight ahead, following like a shadow. Doing her best to keep her composure, her breath was short and she could hardly see in the semi-darkness.
A sound of heavy boots echoed and she knew that no one would come to help her. A scent of fear was all she could perceive. Kyoko pressed her forehead to the ground and took a deep breath. When her attacker was close enough, she turned and kicked him in the stomach. Taking advantage of her retreat, she jumped to her feet and pulled one last time on his right arm. He dropped his sword with a howl of rage and found himself with his other arm broken, his cheek against the wall. For her size, Miharu was pretty violent.
" Yuri Naoko? Kyoko asked, maintaining her grip.
- Dead ! shouted her attacker. Dead like all heroes! Crazy and then dead. Good for her. At least she doesn't see her bastard growing up. "
Kyoko winced and finished dislocating the shoulder of her assailant who collapsed to the ground. She was about to question him when a strong heat propelled her a good five meters away. She crossed the window and fell heavily on the ground of the second floor of the building. When she woke up, it was dark. She got up and staggered to the only sanctuary where she knew she would not be asked any questions.
" Hey Kaji, can I spend the night here ? She asked with a broken smile."
