kaz clings to his revenge and his anger because without it all he would have is his loss. he'd be consumed by mourning — mourning his brother, his father, the life he used to have. he'd ache to wake up as a kid again, free on the farm, laughing under the sun. he'd dream of closing his eyes and being greeted by the yellow light of the farmhouse or of taking his loved ones in his arms. but this pain isn't useful, it just hurts and it won't help him survive in the barrel. so he cuts it out of him, he channels his feelings through rage, he gives his loss a direction, a target. and this allows him to survive

there's this really interesting facet to kaz where, because of every horrible thing that he's done, he doesn't judge others for their most ~ dastardly deeds ~ and while obviously even kaz has a line, he can ( unintentionally ) be comforting when someone is trying to face their misgivings, failures, or regrets. like... you've killed someone and feel guilty about it ? he'd tell you to get over it because crying won't bring the person back. you feel down on your luck ? he'd scoff at you and ask why you're allowing something so small to best you.

i think nina puts it best in soc when she says, “In a way, telling Kaz had been a comfort. There could be no judgment from a boy known as Dirtyhands”. he's someone who can be trusted with a person's worst secrets and not treat them any differently for it. and in some cases, he ends up offering up this degree of tough love that's almost healing in some scenarios, even though that's certainly not what he's trying to do. in many ways, opening up about your deepest regret to someone and that person looking you in the eye, shrugging, and telling you that they don't care is sometimes exactly what a person needs to hear and kaz does it best

What’s their texting style like?

to start off, kaz is an EXTREMELY sporadic texter, he will only reply when he has a reason to. if someone texts him just to catch up or check in, he's not responding. he'll read everything so that he knows exactly what's going on and what people want from him but he has read receipts turned off, so no one knows if he's seen it or not. in terms of HOW he texts, he's very to the point and he uses a lot of hard stops (ex: "No. What do you want?" "Stop talking to me." "You're an idiot."). he'll only use emojis if he's (rarely) making some sort of joke which is the type of thing he does solely with very VERY close friends.

kaz does, however, create and organize a crows group chat for "business purposes" and to "discuss work-related things with easy access" and then proceeds to never text in it and only snoop on the gossip that everyone shares within it. he also goes through a lot of burner phones so when he does text, he keeps conversations brief and they don't go on for long stretches of time.

What’s their handwriting like? is it easy to read or messy?

he's got this super messy scrawl with very thin lines and long loops where all of the letters are tightly crunched next to each other, basically on top of one another. while it is legible, he's far from having very clear/readable handwriting though if he NEEDS to have super easy-to-read handwriting and he has the time for it, he can mimic other styles to make it look more presentable or less identifiable. spend enough time with kaz and you'll be able to spot his handwriting from miles away and he knows it too, so he took the time to learn a variety of different penmanship skills, it's just not something that happens naturally.

When does your muse ask for help? ( when things get bad , before they get bad .etc )

he doesn't. if he absolutely KNOWS he cannot do something alone, he won't ask for help, but he'll hire qualified people for a job. the only SLIGHT exception to this is if he's literally on death's door and he knows he won't be able to save himself, he'll go to someone he trusts that he knows will help him without him having to ask

How does your muse laugh? is it infectious? quiet? obnoxious?

despite what he would have people believe, kaz generally has two different types of laughs: the first of which is performative and it's used in generally antagonistic conversations when he's belittling whoever he's speaking to. he does this in his very first conversation with van eck. it's a laugh that is quick, short, breathy, and more of a drawn out scoff than it is any genuine laughter.

his second laugh is his real one and it's something that very few people will ever hear in their lifetime. his laugh still manages to have his recognizable rasp which sort of makes it sound like he's gasping for breath?? but it's both light and heavy at the same time — while it comes from deep within his chest it comes out muffled and quiet. it sort of sounds like he's someone who is learning to laugh for the first time and, in a way, he is. i think purely because of the rarity in which he laughs, if anyone heard him genuinely laugh it would be totally infectious

How does your muse handle distressing and/or overwhelming situations? 

scheming face!!!! he compartmentalizes all of his emotions and sort of sets them aside for the time being while he looks at the situation from a mostly logical standpoint. he'll break the situation down and find any kind of opportunity he can, no matter how small, to make the situation more beneficial to him and his crew. he's extremely good at doing this on the fly in very small amounts of time and he's able to find an opening for himself in almost anything. because he switches off his emotions, he's really good at staying calm in tense scenarios.

however, anything relating to physical touch or jordie, it's a totally different scenario. he tries to shut off his emotions but it's often so overwhelming that he can't and he tends to lash out in anger. this way, people see kaz having a violent outburst rather than any signs of weakness.

What was the last dream they had? 

he is running through tall spring grasses, the sun beating down on him as he arrives at a familiar farm house. kaz hears his a voice he recognizes and he grins as he races into the kitchen. jordie is there, all grown up and beaming as he talks excitedly with inej. his brother says something and she laughs, her head thrown back and the summer sun shining in through the window on her face. a small bread roll hits him on the cheek as he stares at her and kaz whips his head around to see his other friends in the kitchen. jesper winks at him in a teasing manner and nina loudly makes a comment about how they've lost him to love. he playfully flips them off and turns just in time to see jordie carrying a pitcher of water to the table. his brother stumbles over his feet and jordie spills the whole pitcher, soaking kaz with it.

the house disappears. his friends are gone. he is trapped in the ocean in a sea of dead bodies and he can't hear his friends' voices any longer.

List 5-10 bedtime headcanons

kaz sleeps with a blade beneath his pillow and a gun on his nightstand, there's too many people in ketterdam that die in their beds not to.

he's an extremely light sleeper and rather than sleeping for long 8 hour sessions, he sleeps in 2-4 hour segments at a time, often waking up, doing something for an hour or two and going back to bed.

he sleeps on his back as opposed to his side or stomach as any other position results in him waking up with far more pain in his leg.

he refuses to get into his own bed when he's dirty, even if it means he gets little to no sleep, he will always bathe beforehand

despite what many rumors claim, kaz doesn't sleep with gloves on and his night attire is usually thin and loose. it's the one time he's able to safely take his armor off, so to speak, and in many ways that time is very sacred to him.

kaz is very meticulous about his bedtime routine. he tidies up his room and his office, puts away anything that he's pulled out and doesn't actively need, sets papers on his desk that he'll need the next morning, double checks that all doors and windows are sufficiently locked. while doing this every night might seem tedious after an exhausting day, the repetitive and simple nature of the tasks bring him some sense of peace. it allows him the time to think through any problems he hadn't yet been able to solve.

When they sneeze: hand, elbow, shirt or nothing?

elbow for sure! but he hates it, if he has a tissue or a handkerchief he's using that instead a thousand times over. if he sneezes into his gloves, he has to change them and he'd much prefer to peel his jacket off or roll up his sleeves if he sneezes into the fabric, which he can obviously only do those things when he's alone. for all of the blood and guts of ketterdam, kaz despises feeling dirty and he visibly looks disgusted when anyone sneezes into their hands

What are some trinkets your muse has? ( also asked by @kcrclrezni ♡ )

kaz keeps small items that he's stolen from places that have been very difficult to get in and out of as souvenirs. he has a lot of brooches and pins, there's a few tiny statues, some fancy candlesticks, etc.. he likes pocket watches a lot! and while he's not a collector he does like to have options. he's also stolen dice from every single gambling den in ketterdam.

a lot of these remain in small little keepsake boxes that he's "acquired" through the years. they're all organized, as he'd probably lose his mind a bit if he had tons of random trinkets all over his room.

What is on your muses phone? ( apps , photos , contacts , notes , most used emoijs .etc )

this goes back to an earlier answer where i mentioned that he goes through burner phones a lot ( so he can't be tracked ), but because of that, most of his phone is pretty bare bones. it's a lot of just the default apps, no social media, no games, minimal photos. i do think he has one phone that's sort of his "home base" of phones that he doesn't use for anything work related. this phone has photos of important people in his life, a few advanced crossword and sudoku apps, a small contact list of his most trusted friends, grocery lists in his notes app, and spotify because he likes to listen music. he doesn't like to keep too much of himself on any device because he knows how easily technology can be hacked, so this one phone that has proof that he's really living has a lot of security.

What would it be like to live with your muse?

surprisingly peaceful ! kaz is not a very loud individual, he values silence and he's not the type to create a ruckus. he would have strict rules about keeping the place clean and not touching his stuff and he would be very scary if those rules were ever broken or those boundaries crossed but on the whole, he'd be an alright roommate. however, he would come and go at odd hours and he doesn't spend much time sleeping (if he does at all in a night), there's also the obvious added stressor that there would be days he came home covered in blood and offered no explanation. kaz is not the person who is gonna be having roomie hangouts or gossip sessions in the kitchen at night as he would spend most of his time alone in his room. but, he will fuck up a landlord if need be and he can find a way to fix anything that breaks in a shared living space and if you have ever lived in a shitty college apartment, that's really all that you need in a roommate <3

OOOO this is fun okay there's gonna be a couple obvious ones here but:

crows

playing cards

large bodies of water, especially ones in the early morning covered by fog

any imagery of hands ( hands that are held, hands that grab at bodies, hands that are covered in blood )

List 5-10 appearance related headcanons!

kaz is COVERED in scars and while some are very visible (left eyebrow + above his lip), others most will never know are there due to him wearing long sleeves and usually many layers. he's got plenty on his forearms and back that the majority of people just wouldn't see

he consistently has very heavy eyebags that contribute to him looking even more annoyed/angry/frustrated than he probably is

kaz always has a few strands of hair that he just can't get slicked back no matter how hard he tries and they fall in front of his face consistently. once, when he was about 12 years old and attempting to look like someone that could be taken seriously on jobs, he got so fed up by it that he just snipped them off. it looked so awkward for them to grow back in that he never did it again

the awkward hair growth stage from the paragraph above is also when kaz got into hats and started finding a way to work them into most of his outfits

he gets a lot of his clothing altered so it's a more perfect fit. he doesn't do the whole..getting tailored thing because that's far too much physical touch, but he passes along his measurements and it works well enough to make him look just slightly more put together and professional

he is a master of altering his appearance in a very short amount of time. despite all his hard edges, sharp jawline, high cheekbones, etc. he is really good at smoothing out these features in the way he acts or dresses if he ever needs to for a job

Does your muse know how to cook? are they good or bad?

he does !! while it's not a hobby or something he even particularly enjoys, kaz is really amazing at cooking. he was forced to learn at a young age in order to survive and obviously as he's grown he's just had more experience ( and money ) to learn how to make more complex dishes. he is very much so an "eat to live" not a "live to eat" type of person but that doesn't mean he wants the food that he eats to taste terrible. while he's by no means a picky eater and he will eat food that is terrible to consume, he would prefer not to. kaz keeps a good collection of spices, seasoning, and fresh ingredients in the kitchen of the slat, all meticulously labeled. it's not uncommon to find him there in the quiet hours of the afternoon, throwing a dish together for later. it is worth noting, however, that he does skip meals a lot, not because he doesn't want to cook, but because he just gets busy with work and it takes a backseat to the job.

due  to  the  nature  of  jordie’s  death,  kaz  doesn’t  really  have  anything  physical  to  remember  him  by.  they  barely  had  anything  to  their  name  at  the  time  of  his  death  and  kaz  certainly  didn’t  have  a  place  to  STORE  BELONGINGS  at  for  some  time  afterwards.  all  he  had  were  the  clothes  on  his  back  when  he  climbed  out  of  the  water,  but  the  jacket  he  was  wearing  had  been  JORDIE’S.  he  did  what  he  could  to  keep  it,  but  life  in  ketterdam  was  rough  and  it  was  only  a  matter  of  time  until  it  was  torn  to  shreds.  all  that  remains  of  it  now  is  a  small  square  of  fabric,  but  it’s  a  square  he  holds  onto,  hidden  beneath  a  false  bottom  in  a  drawer  of  his  room  at  the  slat.

he’s  thought  about  burning  it,  especially  post  ck,  as  one  final  attempt  to  SILENCE  his  brother’s  voice  in  his  head,  but  he  can’t  bring  himself  to  do  so.  he  can’t  look  at  it  without  thinking  back  to  the  farm  and  the  BRIGHT   SMILE  on  jordie’s  face  when  he  had  received  the  jacket  as  a  gift  from  their  father,  so  he  doesn’t  look  at  it  all.  he  thinks  that  someday  he’ll  do  something  with  it,  burn  it,  bury  it,  let  it  sink  in  the  sea,  and  say  some  words  along  with  it  that  he’s  buried  ever  since  the  reaper’s  barge.  kaz  knows  people  like  him  are  not  mourned,  they  do  not  get  funerals,  but  he  wants  to  believe  that  jordie  wasn’t  like  him,  not  really,  and  that  getting  rid  of  the  last  thing  he  has  of  him  will  be  the  closest  thing  to  a  funeral  he  can  offer.

i think a lot about inej offering to teach kaz how to fall correctly and how he rejected her by saying that the trick is never falling down in the first place and how representative that is of how he’s lived his life and how he portrays himself — he’s consistently made himself someone that doesn’t stumble, someone that doesn’t fall no matter the situation, no one gets the better of him or takes him by surprise and if they do, he doesn’t allow for anyone to know it and i think about how deeply that ties in with his lack of vulnerability in all of his personal relationships and how the closer you get with someone, the more they’re able to see your mistakes and since he’s painted this picture that he doesn’t make any, he keeps everyone at an arm’s length away so he never “falls down” in front of anyone

in  terms  of  medium,  kaz  has  a  preference  for  oil  on  canvas  though  all  paintings  tend  to  attract  him  no  matter  the  type  of  paint.  he  leans  towards  rare  and  classical  pieces  more  than  modern  or  abstract,  believing  abstract  art  to  be  composed  of  “  untalented  degenerates  hoping  to  get  rich  by  throwing  handfuls  of  paint  at  a  canvas  ”  .  he’s  fairly  well  versed  in  art  history  and  especially  in  his  modern  verse  is  the  type  of  person  who  could  spend  HOURS  at  an  art  gallery  (  something  he  often  does  when  he  wants  to  get  away  from  people  ).  though  he  himself  is  not  an  artist  nor  does  he  have  any  interest  in  being  one,  he’s  always  felt  a  natural  pull  towards  works  considered  to  be  part  of  the  canon  of  art  history.

however,  he  does  have  a  SECRET  SOFT  SPOT  for  hidden  gems  -  beautiful  and  lavish  paintings  created  by  unknown  artists  that  are  struggling  to  get  by.  a  few  pieces  that  fall  under  this  category  can  be  found  hanging  in  his  bedroom  at  any  known  time  and  these  works  are  also  the  ONLY  ones  he’d  ever  pay  for  rather  than  steal. 

kaz  is  an  extremely  well-read  individual,  though  this  is  less  due  to  enjoyment  and  more  due  to  a  desire  to  know  and  understand  commonly  referenced  texts.  he  doesn’t  really  hold  onto  books,  with  most  of  what  he’s  read  being  fully  committed  to  memory  as  soon  as  he’s  done  so.  of  all  literature,  he’s  most  attracted  to  POETRY  as  an  art  form.

kaz’s  father’s  name  is  johannus  and  it’s  actually  where  jordie’s  middle  name  comes  from.  when  kaz  was  young,  him  and  his  father  were  really  close  and  when  he  wasn’t  acting  as  his  brother’s  shadow,  he  could  be  found  trailing  behind  his  dad  in  boots  that  were  far  too  large  for  a  boy  so  young,  trying  to  help  out  around  the  farm.  johannus  was  bright,  as  if  sunshine  had  been  bottled,  but  he  was  horrible  with  money  and  even  when  he  was  young,  kaz  noticed  how  WEARY  his  father  began  to  look  as  his  debts  climbed  higher  and  collectors  began  to  frequent  their  doorstep.

as  kaz  grew  older,  it  became  clear  that  an  abundance  of  wealth  could  solve  dozens  of  his  problems,  but  his  desire  for  money  can  be  traced  all  the  way  back  to  watching  the  way  his  dad  used  to  sink  into  the  chair  in  their  living  room,  counting  kruge  and  muttering  to  himself  under  his  breath.  he  dreamed  of  obtaining  all  the  money  in  the  world,  if  only  it  meant  his  father  would  never  look  so  worried  again. 

kaz  misses  him  greatly.  in  the  final  years  spent  with  him,  when  debts  had  piled  up  and  his  father  was  working  himself  to  death,  kaz  didn’t  see  much  of  him,  he  grew  attached  to  jordie  at  the  hip,  but  his  father’s  death  was  the  FIRST  real  glimpse  at  darkness  in  the  world  and  he’s  never  fully  moved  past  that.

kaz  doesn’t  quite  understand  fjerda  or  its  customs,  he  thinks  the  lot  of  them  to  be  thick-headed  and  blind  followers  who  will  do  anything  if  their  religion  tells  them  they  should.  he  believes  their  obsession  with  justifying  their  crimes  against  grisha  to  be  silly  and  pointless  and  while  he’s  not  particularly  bothered  by  their  pursuits  against  grisha,  he  thinks  they  should  just  call  it  what  it  is.  in  all  honesty,  for  most  of  kaz’s  life  he  didn’t  think  much  of  fjerda,  it  didn’t  affect  him  all  that  much  and  he’s  always  had  a  particularly  BURNING  HATRED  for  the  cold  with  no  desire  to  visit.

that  being  said,  post  ck,  any  talk  of  fjerda  makes  kaz  smile.  fjerda  is  matthias,  fjerda  is  nina,  fjerda  is  watching  his  friends  steal  a  tank  and  crash  through  an  impenetrable  wall.  he  keeps  the  maps  of  the  ice  court  that  matthias  and  wylan  worked  on  together  hanging  in  his  office  next  to  a  larger  map  of  fjerda  and  if  anyone  asks  about  them  he  simply  says  he  did  a  big  job  there  once.  he  still  hates  the  cold  and  still  doesn’t  have  any  plans  to  visit  unless  he  has  to,  but  it  makes  him  feel  ODDLY  WARM  when  he  glances  up  at  the  maps.
