★ HEESEUNG:
stares at you, blank emotionless stare. At first, you think it's an affectionate prank where he's waiting for the moment your eyes meet so he can scare you but no. It might seem cute at the start but then it turns almost sinister because he will not stop looking at you with those love-sick eyes and smiles that turn blank and you're worried if he's okay. When you ask him about it, he says YOU'RE lovesick and delusional because that's how he looks at everyone. Man has to save his crumbling dignity somehow. You're with your coworkers, minding your own business and your friend nudges you and asks "if you know him?" Him being your bf who's been making heart eyes at you from across the room for an hour straight.
★ JAY:
He's a neat and clean person which is great for mornings when you're rushing out and can't find where you placed your socks, keys and bag. But it's not fun when you're minding your own business and he texts you "pls pick up your laundry next time." Or complains about last night's dirty dishes you promised you would clean. They're just dirty dishes to you but he rolls his eyes and says it's so much deeper than that and gives you a speech. Draws a chart where he divides chores and duties and sticks it on the fridge so no one forgets. The chart has a rewards and punishment feature. Rewards mean extra kisses and he's not evil so he keeps the punishment low- just two hours without a kiss.
★ JAKE:
the type to speak during movies. It's a variety of statements and questions. Sometimes it's endearing when he recognises a certain actor from another liked film but has this habit of commenting on scenes regardless of the genre. "oh wow. Hide instead of calling for help, why not?" "That is NOT scientifically possible but they could have at least made it sound like they knew physics." Sometimes he gets passionate and you need to grab his shoulder to calm him down. There's going to be a crucial, heart-wrenching scene of the two main leads staring at one another playing, you're at the edge of your seat and he'll turn your head towards him with his fingers and go, "Do you think they stared at each other pores and compared skin types? "
★ SUNGHOON:
makes everything a competition just to make it "fun". Has a bit of trouble understanding when people aren't competitive or don't like a challenge. Which is why he's created puzzles in your own house 😭. Holds a "who can eat food the fastest" competition, Hides your favourite mug and puts a riddle note in its place. "Babe, it'll be so fun, come on." It's not and every time he pulls a stunt like that you want to grab him by the throat but he'll swiftly grab your hands and show off his stupid fang smile and you'll forget what you were going to do. The type to prank you by hiding behind ajar doors and spooking the life out of you and anticipates you doing the same He is so cute. Constantly tries to provoke your competitive spirit by making mundane tasks a competition and sure it's fun but not all the time TT.

Scrunkore Media "Thread" 2023: Part 2
Tumblr media
welcome back to the scrunko core
14) Ib (Switch, 2023)
One of the real classics of RPG Maker horror games, upgraded for the modern age in just a few little ways that manage to keep the experience feeling as it should. Ib has a perfectly bizarre and creepy atmosphere, making really good use out of its excellent concept of being trapped in a living art gallery, with decent enough puzzles to keep you engaged throughout. I'm a big fan of its vibes and its exploration of loneliness and art in general, and it has a really strong trio of characters and various different endings that I found myself liking a lot. Now's as good a time as any to check this game out. [4.5★]
15) Everything Everywhere All At Once (Movie, 2022)
Kind of a critical darling as well as an audience favourite around when it came out, and yeah, I agree with everyone else - this movie is fantastic. Really good and creative direction in an absolutely wild ride through parallel universes, family and generational trauma that I'm told can hit really hard for the Chinese-American demographic and others like it but can be enjoyed by just about anyone. It uses its ideas pretty much perfectly, and it has a whole multiverse of them to play with; I was fully engaged throughout the whole experience. It deserved those awards. [5★]
16) Fire Punch (Manga, 2016-2018)
Tatsuki Fujimoto's earlier manga series, wrapping up just before his biggest claim to fame began, really can feel like Chainsaw Man's fucked up older brother - and it kind of is, really. It does touch on some of the same things, but the world is even harsher and the suffering even greater, and the overall mood can seem a lot more nihilistic, but there is hope in there still. It's also a harder read than Chainsaw Man, but it stands alone as a rough tale of struggling through an apocalyptic world, and it gets bonus points from me for its heartbreaking trans character I don't want to spoil. I'm not sure how much I'd recommend it, with the particular kinds of misery involved feeling gratuitous at times, but I am glad I read it. [4★]
17) Super Lesbian Animal RPG (PC, 2022)
The title kind of says it all here, this is a superb RPG about anthro animal girls in lesbian relationships, and it does an excellent job at delivering exactly that with a lot more besides. The whole cast is likeable, even the asshole characters, and the story is a mix of really good fun and powerful emotional beats, naturally being queer as hell to boot. I really appreciate the gameplay too, it's by default a fairly easy game until pretty late, but it's quite well-balanced and goes out of its way to ensure you'll never even think about grinding (levels cap at 30, even), plus a lot of the fights are just really fun. Excellent visuals and incredible soundtrack too, just a perfectly well-rounded super lesbian animal RPG that I have no real complaints with at all. [5★]
18) Tembo the Badass Elephant (PC, 2015)
A little controversial back when it released for daring to be a Game Freak game not on either of the Nintendo consoles in circulation at the time, this game is... well, it's fine. Just a decent enough 2D action platformer that feels like if you modded Wario into a Sonic game with how you can speed through levels smashing up everything in your way, but the level design and even the odd boss fight reminds me of some of the worst parts of Sonic games at times, so I'm not super fond of it. It does have plenty of charm though, with a fun cartoony artstyle and some 3D setpieces that do make one wonder why it wasn't on 3DS. Controlling a badass action hero elephant saving as many people as possible is a neat idea, too. [3★]
19) Picross 3D (DS, 2009)
There have been many different takes on Picross over the years, under many different names as well, but almost nobody has done it quite like HAL did with Picross 3D. It feels like a whole different breed of puzzle, and it is indeed nothing like regular 2D Picross - the transformation into cube-based puzzles makes things far more advanced, often more difficult, and a lot more rewarding. There's not much more to this game other than the massive amount of puzzles to solve and the option to create your own, but it doesn't really need anything else. Some puzzles are extremely hard, but that's alright, and the game is the perfect fit for the DS hardware. [4★]
20) Picross 3D Round 2 (3DS, 2015)
I technically played this a bit later, but I think it makes sense to put this next to the first game. HAL managed to do it again, innovating further on the 3D Picross concept with different shapes that you can turn blocks into - a simple change, but one that goes surprisingly far towards making the game more enjoyable. It's a lot comfier with its presentation too, and there's even some surprisingly great music in there. Not much more to it than that, but it's still filled to the brim with a huge amount of puzzles, including bonus special Amiibo unlocks (there is a homebrew program to bypass this), and that's all I can ask of it once again. I'd hope for a third round, but I don't know that I'd like it as much without stylus controls... [4.5★]
21) The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog (PC, 2023)
Sonic coming out of nowhere on April Fool's with a shockingly high-effort "joke" project was unexpected, but that blue hedgehog does have a way of blindsiding you. The game is a small but lovingly made point-and-click revolving around a murder mystery party with a few fun twists happening towards the end, and it's pretty funny for the most part, so that's the "joke" part down. On top of that, it has a really solid grasp of the characters and how to write them, seemingly on par with the IDW comics, which is more than we've seen from most of the games until fairly recently. It's something of a breath of fresh air, with plenty of fanservice, and my only real complaint is the "THINK!" segments being kind of... not very good. But as a whole, this game is really nice, and I hope they do more creative projects like this in the future. They even got the "self-insert" protagonist right, because they're such a weird and silly one. They should murder Sonic more often! [4★]
22-23) Escaped Chasm/Dweller's Empty Path (PC, 2019/2020)
I'd like to group these together, because they're kind of part of the same interesting project from Temmie Chang (yes, the Undertale Temmie). Both very short RPG Maker games with zero combat and a focus on exploring all the dialogue and plot you can get out of them. Both games have their dark elements, but Escaped Chasm definitely has the most - it's got some upsetting bits, and the ending is rather bittersweet, but I did enjoy the short tale of the lonely girl. It kind of serves as a prequel to Dweller's Empty Path, though you won't know it until you see a certain part. Speaking of which, that game is pretty nice, mostly just being a walking simulator that you can end at any time by going to bed, but there is quite a bit of dialogue for you to see that fleshes out the world and characters, with hints at what might be to come in the future. Both games adopt a Game Boy style pixel art look with minimal colour palettes and I kind of like that about them, and the developer managed to rope in Toby Fox and Camellia for musical contributions, which is awesome. Overall, the games feel like they're setting up something rather interesting, also being rather interesting in themselves, and I hope Temmie is able to do more with this in the future. [3.5★]
24) OFF (PC, 2008)
Another certified RPG Maker classic that has somehow never been re-released in any form, unless you count the official English translation from 2011, and it's certainly an odd one. The vibes are deeply unsettling throughout, the morality of the protagonist is dubious at best, and it has all kinds of strange setpieces showcasing the utterly bizarre lore of its equally bizarre world. It's kind of hard to tell what it's even really about, but it contains themes relating to religion, illness, capitalism and more besides. There are even multiple endings, including a random joke one serving as a "reward" for beating a strange and lengthy secret boss, and honestly I think the game is more of a weird French art piece than anything else. The puzzles and battle system do kind of suck in several areas, so it's all about the feeling of the game in the end, and it certainly made me feel... something. I don't think anyone completely understands this game, but I do like what it tries to do, and I respect it. [3.5★]

Book Review: The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag
Tumblr media
★★★★★
Molly Ostertag, selkies, and sapphic romance? It's as good as you're thinking!
In a small town in Nova Scotia, Morgan is just trying to get through high school. Her parents are divorced, her brother has transformed into a jerk, and she's told herself she'll stay in the closet until she gets out of here. But when a strange girl saves her from drowning and (thinking it's a dream) Morgan kisses her, her world is rocked.
Keltie, the strange girl, is in fact a selkie who claims that Morgan is her true love. But while falling for Keltie, Morgan is struggling to keep her a secret from her friends and family. And she's not the only one keeping a secret...
Low stakes and lovely, this graphic novel is a great story of friendship, family, environmental issues, and embracing yourself. It also includes one of my favourite mythical creatures: the selkie, a creature that spends most its time as a seal but can become human by removing its seal pelt. Ostertag has some interesting twists on the legends (like taking the "7" from "7 tears into the sea" and making it that the selkie can only be human once every 7 years), and it was really neat to see.
Overall, this book and its characters are just so sweet, and it was so lovely to read about them. I cannot wait to go revisit them again because this was just so wonderful!

★ drunk miguel
Tumblr media
synopsis: miguel being absolutely wasted thinking about you, his wife.
cw: cussing !!! fluffie ♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪
> angel ; just got back on that writing GRIND 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽! i wrote this draft idea i saw on my notes !!
Tumblr media
peter chuckled at miguel’s disheveled face, pulling out his almost out of storage phone to snap a picture. the flash hit miguel’s heated face as he pulled his hand up to cover his eyes from the light.
peter sent a message to y/n, texting her “your husband’s knockoed OUTF!” he shrugged his shoulders at the misspellings and started scrolling through his gallery.
currently, they were at the spidey’s bar, one being intoxicated and the other only sipping a few drinks. guess who?
miguel kept his face caved around his arms, about to drift off to sleep when he thought about his sweet wife, oh how he loved her.
a warm smile that only he could see was plastered onto his lips, thinking about how she’s waiting for him to get home — how when he got home she would indulge him in her kisses.
miguel’s smile faltered, a pout replacing it. where was his companion? his vida? the person he let’s cuddle him while he’s sleeping?? he stumbled trying to grab his phone from his pocket failing to put his password in, his talons tapping on the screen more than his fingers did. face id saved his ass.
he opened your contact his fangs flashed as his smile grew, the contact picture was you and him, mostly you, doing your self care routine.
he texts you, a misspelled “i mijiss yu.” was sent. he stares at the screen waiting for you to reply. as soon as he saw “read” he started smiling… again.
> mi sol : aaww, do you want me to pick u up?
> miggy ❤️ : yesd
mi sol hearted a message.
now miguel was scrolling through the album of you taking in all of you, taking in your stunning features. although his brightness was slightly down, peter could see his screen.
miguel had his elbow propped up with his hand holding his head, phone in his other hand a small smile that he (tried) to keep down. peter acknowledged this. “whatcha smiling about, buddyyy!” he wrapped a arm around miguel’s neck looking at his phone.
“my wife ish so beautiful.” “oh really?” he replied. “well, my wife’s-” “i don’t care.” he shrugged peter’s oh so welcoming arm from his shoulder, scrolling through the almost endless photos of you and him, a warm familiar ringed hand caressed his back rubbing circles against it.
“miguel, you ready to go hun?” you said in a comforting tone, your voice low; only letting him hear you. he tiredly turned around in the high spinny bar chair, wrapping his big arms around your neck inhaling your sweet scent his body caging you in.
“i love you.” his voice was slurred, obviously he was tired. you grinned, giggling at his clinginess and patting his back whilst moving closer to the door, knowing he would follow.
you soon unwrapped his arms from your neck, only leaving one so he could stay stable. you tapped numbers onto the watch miguel had given you ages ago, walking into the orange void.
you were brought to the darkness shared bedroom, unwrapping the comforter from its neat fold to lay the big baby down. as soon as you tried to leave his side though, he pulled you back to him.
“don’t leave me..” he paused. “please.” his eyes drooped with fatigue using all his strength left to hold your wrist, your relaxed pulse fluctuating against his palm. you smiled warmly, climbing into bed with him. “i never will, miguel.”

Book #34 of 2022:
The Arrival by K. A. Applegate (Animorphs #38)
The Andalites are here! Well, sort of. It’s not the reinforcement fleet that the Animorphs have been expecting while waging their desperate resistance war against the Yeerk occupiers. Instead, Ax’s people have sent a vanguard of just four warriors, with a stated objective to assassinate the enemy general Visser Three. Cassie is outraged, although that’s one of her moral objections that feels somewhat weak given the death and destruction that she and her friends wreak among their foes on any particular day.
It’s a question the book dodges too, with the eventual reveal that the commandos have actually come to deliver an unstable virus that will wipe out the Yeerks completely but might mutate into something that will also prove fatal to humanity. Even ignoring the shaky science there, escalating the stakes to the level of genocide makes the story less interesting, because it turns the leader of these new arrivals into a clear villain, in a franchise that’s generally best when exploring the murky grays, tough decisions, and ensuing trauma of the child soldiers and their guerilla campaign. Whereas non-combat casualties can at least be debated on ethical grounds, a pathogen that could kill off all humans is obviously, trivially bad. And so Arbat, who as Alloran’s brother could have been a poignant tragic figure and a mirror for Jake, himself the sibling to a Controller, is instead only a shallow obstacle for everyone to overcome.
There’s also some nominal conflict as to whether our alien protagonist will keep loyal to his earth allies or the delegation of his own species — including an attractive and intelligent young female cadet, with whom he shares his first kiss in human morph — but at this point in the series, that’s a foregone conclusion as well. We are accustomed to Andalite arrogance and hypocrisy, and Ax has already made his choice to stand with the Animorphs against it. Likewise, while it’s amusing to see the team pretend to disband in a crisis of conscience, feigning weakness for a hidden audience at Cassie’s barn just as they once did to entrap David, it seems so transparent and repeated a ploy that I doubt many readers would fall for it (and I don’t consider it a major spoiler to mention here). But as a consequence of ghostwriter Kimberly Morris framing the narrative that way, the kids are absent for much of this title, leaving only Aximili and his nonstarter of a plot.
As is often the case, individual moments help save the day, to a degree. I love how the initial mission to investigate the local newspaper office turns out to be a Yeerk honeypot, and that it likely would have been the end of the “bandits” had the real Andalites not shown up right then to assist, tracking Ax’s DNA. With the group heavily outnumbered, Taxxons surging up the stairwell, and Hork-Bajir pulling back ceiling tiles to drop down from above, it’s an outstanding setpiece all-around, matched only by the final showdown at the Yeerk pool, where caged humans stand and link arms to protect the fighters from the guards attempting to shoot them. Gambling that their bodies are too valuable as hosts, those temporarily-free individuals put their lives on the line in a small yet significant act of bravery. Tobias helping to burn straight through the McDonalds overhead is pretty neat too, making this the second volume in a row in which the good guys cause serious property damage with potential for civilian collateral, in a sign of how their struggle continues to escalate.
So it’s not a complete bust. The characters are recognizably themselves, and I definitely appreciate the continuity here, following up on the battle for Leera and several other threads from earlier adventures. I just think we spend a bit too long on would-be tensions that seem fairly simple to resolve at this stage of the larger storyline.
[Content warning for body horror, cannibalism, and gore.]

Hi Zu! I am happy to report that day one is 100% complete! Woooooo ooo, got 3 days left!
How are you doing today? How's the comic going.
Hi Gayfish! Oh YAY \(//∇//)\ You put a lot into this one, well done!! ☆ Can't wait to see it *^* and good luck with the rest ones <3
Well I have good news! I updated Firealpaca (for the first time pff) and oh god– there are so many new features and brushes there! *0* Guess I have to learn the program again XD What's your Firealpaca's version btw?
But the bad news is, my main font has also been updated, yet not for the better. Latin letters used to look thin and neat in the comics, but now... I've found some similar fonts, yet none of them suit me the way this one did. I know it's not fatal heh, it hurts my eye though. But I'm too determined, and I'm thinking about creating my own font. ★ (I have a couple of Russian ones so this is not the first time for me)
How's it going? ♡
UPD:
Tumblr media
Thanks! I don't need a lot to be happy there tbh <3
Same, such details are so cruel >3<
Ah you can see it by clicking on "About Firealpaca"! or smth like that xd
In fact, this is simple but very painstaking work. First you need to just draw the letters, then put them into vector format (InDesign) then transfer the vectors to a font program (FontLab/FontForge) and save it as a font file (.ttc/ttf). Profit! ☆
Wow– looks so good! (*゚∀゚*) Keep up the great work! Aw poor Cross ;3; but srly something amazing is coming! (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵) And a kind of crossover? *eyes emoji* Ohh I'm intrigued!
Tumblr media
DUDE. This is a brilliant one!! ♡(人 •͈ᴗ•͈) Greek AU's alive! Hoo boi I need a good dose of dreammare.
Tumblr media
Yay! (*´∀`*) Oh btw, so they're an uncle and a nephew? But who's Zeus? :0
Tumblr media
HMM! Chaotic indeed ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) What if! ☆
If Nim is Persephone's mother, then US!Sans could be Zeus since Nim chose his body him to create Dream (it would make Nightmare his son as well but nvmd XD)
Tumblr media
Anyway we have Dream & Nightmare and that's already niccce so yeah!! Good luck with this *^*

FEH - Seasonal banner for Nov/2021 + thoughts and hype
youtube
(Link to trailer)
So, guess I was right in the end about my guesses on the silhouettes, anyway, we have the full ninja banner revealed here, thoughts, reactions and identity of free unit and banner right below the cut!
(Thoughts on datamine stuff will be shared on a separate post!)
The free unit
It's going to be...
Tumblr media
Shamir!
She's going to be... yet another infantry axe unit... I swear, I.S. just seems to like these and infantry red tomes for no reason, they're being uncreative here.
Anyway, this is her kit:
Tumblr media
Eugh... [Atk/Spd 2]? Last unit that introduced it was Hot Springs Camilla back in early 2019, and she has it at 5★, Nephenee offers it in the regular pool, you'd like to replace that soon as possible, it's not a great skill on its own, and can even work a little on really specific cases. [Atk/Spd Solo 3] or something similar would certainly be much better, but whatever, at least it can be replaced just fine, and should incentivate any Shamir fans like me to invest on her rather than foddering her for anything valuable.
[Shuriken Cleaver+] is a good weapon on its own, it trades the speed boost that [Ninja Masakari+] from Ninja Hana gives for true damage (the escalable fixed extra you can get and that cannot be reduced unless the foe is fast enough to work around the speed check). The rest of her kit is okay, it's clear it primes her for damage, but it kind of makes her rely on having allies nearby, you might definitely like to rework on something from the ground.
Her statline is going to be revealed soon, but it's possible it'll be a slightly improved and optimized Ninja Hana, in which case, skills that boost attack and speed then add {damage reduction} like [Spurn 3] would be awesome in that case.
Reactions and thoughts on banner
I'll be as brief as I can, it's just an easy skip... mostly, this is because I hardly see anything of value to pick a backup color, but I'm interested on one of the units: Igrene; I've really grown to like her, but I'll leave any talk for a possible future appreciation post, since this isn't the topic I should talk about in here.
Anyway, I do love her artwork and she seems fun to use, I'd definitely pull for her since I like her characterization, but "should I?" No, definitely not, I'm still low on savings as a result of pulling for Legendary Fae, Malice and Erinys/Jill, I still have like a little less than 100 [Orbs], but it still isn't a really good call to pull either.
But still, I'll say something I'm sure of:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm so excited about these two! 😍👏🏻
I definitely love the artwork and the previews promise, and even though I'm no fan of design inconsistency, I definitely admire Cuboon's work, their take on Igrene is as gorgeous as ever.
Shamir definitely looks pretty interesting, having her ninja uniform based on her original clothes, can't wait to see the full artwork and the name of the artist!
The banner itself is mostly a copy paste from last year's in terms of gameplay, Igrene is probably the most worrysome unit in the banner, since she can fly and has strong offenses, plus being colorless which makes her harder to get in disadvantage, but that can also be her weakness. What's more, I don't think she'll plague the meta, she's strong and potentially highly mobile, but she can't chain the same amount of movement as Halloween Nowi with her refine, and she's still going to be a frail unit with a myriad of counters and ways to bait her off.
It's worth noting we have [Special Spiral 3] on a seasonal semi-demote, which is pretty neat as this skill is kinda rare and has a bunch of useful applications.
About: bonus units and [Sacred Seals]
Tumblr media
These are our bonus units, definitely going to use Shamir, since I like her a lot and she's my only bonus unit here! But I'd absolutely love to get Ninja Igrene someday.
Also, our [Sacred Seals] will be: [Atk/Res Form] and [Ward Beasts].
The former will have some uses but it's not particularly essential to upgrade, the latter is even less useful as it's a tad too specific and situational, but at least you won't need to upgrade it.
Anyway, that's it for now
I'm waiting on datamine to talk some more, about Summer Tana's refine and lightly about the rest, plus Ninja Shamir's stats and build plans!

★ “ I just MIGHT stab you and throw you over a cliff and petition to get  new mun that doesn’t terrorize me with the fucking furbies. ”
( OKAY, THAT WAS IN POOR TASTE. IM SORRY I PUT THE.. MAGNET.. *SNORTS SO BADLY* Okay... okay that was on me, I’m sorry I did that but it was hilarious. Feel free to throw me over a cliff, I can survive it, but good luck getting a new mun. It’s not like you don’t scream at 3 am either after finding a really big roach. )
★ “ I.. IT WAS A REALLY BIG ROACH! IT TRIED TO ATTACK ME FOR MY RED VELVET CAKE! I COULD’VE DIED! AND, PUH-LEAAASE! I COULD GET ANOTHER MUN IF I REALLY WANTED TO! One that doesn’t delight in terrorizing poor, helpless me and lets me have their stash of Dr. Pepper when I’m out of coca cola. ”
( PSH, city boy... you’re not from where I am and I used to catch lizards, grasshoppers, praying mantis’ and toads. It’s the roaches that fear me but come ON, as I was saying earlier before I scared the crap out of you, you gotta admit the fact a furby works using only ONE single motor is pretty nifty! Blinking, moving its mouth, ears and making sounds through one single motor doing it all! It’s little things like that, that’s really cool. )
★ “ Who’re you calling ‘City Boy’? You’ve lived most of your life in a city, granted its not as splendid as London or New York but it’s pretty decent for being out in the middle of nowhere. Well maybe if you didn’t pull such a rude stunt on me, I’d be more willing to talk on that horrid little creation ... but.. it is rather cool how that works just by one little motor. ”
( yeah see? Now, see, this is why you need me you big doof. Just by one motor this thing does four different things, now what if we applied that to your clackers or whatever you find in your pocket? )
★ “.. How did you go from furby’s to my clackers? Not that I’m not listening, considering I’ve done my own share of on-the-spot improv with Clacker Boomerang and then the thing with the marbles was quite clever if I had to say so myself. ”
( You’d find I tend to ramble a shitton the more you get to know me, but yeah the marbles! Who knew right? I mean you using Hamon on your clackers was pretty cool just by itself and you even made it into a style of your own, probably needs some work but hell if it ain’t still pretty effective. Imagine what could happen if we kept up on experimenting your hamon on different things that could end up saving you or giving you an edge in a fight.)
★ “ Can’t say I’m not interested and I agree I am pretty clever when in a pinch but I’d much rather have the luxury of testing things out than rely on luck. I was thinking of what else I could use these marbles other than making people slip or using them like tiny bombs when overcharged with Hamon. ”
( right, right, now y’see what I mean? The clackers and your marbles are like the motor, on its own its pretty mundane but you still managed to get all those nifty moves and ideas out of them much like how that single motor in the furby makes the eyes blink or the mouth and ears move. All you need is just a little ingenuity and you’ll find yourself having a new trick up your sleeve. Pluuuus, you could probably pull off some really neat pranks on people~~ )
★ “ As long as it doesn’t involve any hard work. I’d be willing to try out a few things. ”

Book Review: Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Spoiler-y Review
Tumblr media
★★☆☆☆
Back in the day, I had this plan for the off chance that I was around for the whole end-of-the-world thing. It involved climbing up on my roof and blasting R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" as loud as humanly possible, but real life rarely turns out that cool.
Warning: Spoilers below the cut!
2.5
Okay - Opposition definitely is a step up from last book, but I still don't feel it's as strong as it could have been.
The action scenes were certainly better, though I could live without Katy and Daemon's commentary on some matters. The ending was also a little too neat from my perspective, but at least I found myself enjoying a lot more of the humour as well as the varied character interaction. Thank god we have more people around because Katy and Daemon can't just mentally (and physically) undress each other (all the time) with other characters around, thank god - though they do find their way around this too often from my perspective (like really, guys, this is World Saving Time, NOT Sexy Time). It's even worse considering all Daemon thinks about (at the worse fucking times too) is how much he wants to have sex with her, which is such a turnoff. But yes, it's definitely a bit more fun with the other characters and overall enjoyable as a read, but I do have quite a few complaints:
The transition to finding out about the Luxen coming to earth felt extremely abrupt and honestly terrible since it was infodumped on us from Katy's POV. To make it more effective, Armentrout really should have written a scene of Dee, Dawson, and Daemon being summoned. The summary just felt sloppy.
The Sadi thing is stupid - why do we have to have all possible women drooling over Daemon? Seriously, Armentrout kills off Ash (who honestly deserved much better) only to be replaced by someone who doesn't stick around long enough for me to care. Also why does being pretty, attracted to someone also pretty (who just so happens to be the protagonist's boyfriend), and ambitious always make you an evil slut? I mean, Katy can't argue with that second point considering how often she and Daemon drool over each other.
Also, why did Armentrout have to make Dee evil? Honestly, there's not much point besides unnecessary angst, and I really could have used some gal pal moments throughout this book (too many goddamn alpha males exuding ridiculous levels of testoterones, dear lord). We didn't even have an equivalent to do because Beth is more a plot pawn than character, so she really doesn't make up for it - she's literally just there for the pregnancy plot.
Also speaking of the pregnancy, you can't tell me that Katy and Archer would be stupid enough to go get supplies that minute after finding out about Beth instead of waiting and carefully planning. Luc would have shot them down too. Honestly though, I have to say that Katy just felt off this book too. I don't know if she's maybe whinier here, but this did not help my enjoyment.
Okay, that plot with Lotho is just creepy and weird. And the stereotypical villain-type lusting after/sexually assaulting the protagonist? Just too cliche and ridiculous. I can't believe that in this entire book no one seems able to control their fucking hormones.
Luc and Archer are still the best characters. Luc's existence is just hilarious - an overpowered fifteen-year-old mafia-ish boss who just acts like a child and uses outdated slang? Perfection. Also this moment is my absolute favourite:
"What? It's the kind [of Lunchable] that has Oreo cookies included," he replied. "That shit is banging." "God, you had so much potential," Nancy muttered under her breath.
Having Archer around to call out Katy and Daemon with all their bedroom eyes is also much needed, so thank you to him. But his relationship with Dee is so instalovey - I wish that they actually had time to develop their dynamic before Dee ran off. Really, it could have been so entertaining to see Daemon have to actually play nice while they flirt like mad just to piss him off (because they totally would).
As for the whole government portion of the plot, of course a bunch of teens are smarter than the fucking government. Cause why not. *slams head against wall*
I have to say, the villains are really not fleshed out enough. They are pretty standard evil, and we never get to know them well enough for their motivations to really make an impact on readers. There's no plot twist because they're are strangers and stock characters - no surprise because we don't know what we should be surprised for (although the Ethan being an Origin reveal is well-done because of how it was set up, though I wish we have seen more of him earlier on).
And in this book again, we have villains revealing their entire villainous schemes to our oblivious protagonists who really couldn't have figured it out otherwise. Armentrout really needs to realize that there is a potentially really interesting plot right there for her protagonists to skillfully figure out, but since that would involve less spontaneous sex, that might turn her off it unfortunately.
I still have some unanswered questions too: Whatever happened to Lesa? The poor thing believes all her friends are missing, dead or probably caught up in this alien bullshit (because of that video with Katy). How does she survive the fallout of this? As well, does Beth ever reunite with her family? After rereading Shadows, it's clear she's very close with them as much as they can annoy her. How would that reunion go? Does Philip (her little brother) even remember her? And will her mom have a fight over Beth becoming a young mother too or will she just be too relieved to see her daughter alive?
One more thing: why doesn't the end of the world feel like the end of the world? Seriously, it has it's good moments with the horror of dead bodies in vehicle and whatnot, but some parts just feel too easy. You can't tell me that there aren't conspiracy theorists running directly to the Luxen or someone trying to take them on because they think this whole thing is a hoax. And are all the Luxen just murderous assholes? And what's happening with the rest of the world? More invasion? Any foreign aid? It doesn't really add up.
So, while it's not the World's Best Ending, but for hardcore fans, it's definitely a decent conclusion, if underwhelming. It's doesn't hold up as well on reread, but then again, most series from my earlier teens don't. Ah well - at least the first three books (and novella) are fun enough!

Movie #5 of 2022:
Encanto (2021)
Disney’s 60th animated feature is a real breath of fresh air, breaking from the studio’s usual patterns in a few startlingly welcome ways. The heroine doesn’t just have two living parents: she has a whole household full of siblings and aunts and uncles and cousins too, a rowdy ensemble where everyone has their own magic powers and big personalities, including the casita itself. It feels straight out of a Diana Wynne Jones novel, right down to the protagonist with no special gift of her own who ends up having to save them all. There’s no hero’s journey, however; this is a domestic drama that barely crosses the boundaries of the home — although granted, that’s an enchanted space where the rooms are bigger on the inside and some of them Mirabel has never explored at all.
The Colombian setting, Latinx cast with a range of skin tones, and catchy Lin-Manuel Miranda soundtrack add further distinction to the film, but the best part may be the thematic focus on the intergenerational trauma of family secrets and overburdensome expectations. No one is an outright villain; they are simply people inadvertently hurting each other in their inability to recognize pain beyond their own, and the major threat of the building cracking apart and taking the enchantments with it is as neat a metaphor as you could want to get audiences of any age thinking about how this might relate to their own lives. The key to salvaging the Madrigal house is literally to shore up the foundations of trust that have eroded between its various occupants, letting each speak their truth and acknowledge one another’s in turn. Hatchets are buried, new leaves are turned over, and I’ve cried, unabashedly.
Disney could use more movies like this. Honestly, we all could.
