A COMPREHENSIVE BREAKDOWN OF JUNG YOONAH’S CHARACTER [ HAN DOYUN / PLAYER 098 ] IN SQUID GAME BY EVERY EPISODE.
TW :: DEATH, MURDER, AND BLOOD MENTION. MINOR SQUID GAME SPOILERS.
EPISODE ONE :: "Red Light, Green Light (무궁화 꽃이 피던 날)"
DURATION OF SCREEN TIME :: 2 MINUTES
Player 098 and Player 099 sit with Gihun before the first game the three of them discussing why they’re here and how much money they think they’ll take home. It’s revealed that Player 098 and Player 099 are a young married couple, both struggling with loans as they are both currently unpaid interns at an unnamed company. The first game is Red Light, Green Light, where those who lose are gunned down on the spot. All three are able to complete the game.
EPISODE TWO :: "Hell (지옥)"
DURATION OF SCREEN TIME :: 12 MINUTES
More than half the players were killed in the first game, and some survivors beg to leave. According to the third clause of the game's agreement, if the majority agree to end the games, all players will be sent home. The players vote, Player 098 and Player 099 have a panicked discussion if they should stay in the game or not. Player 098 wants to leave while Player 099 thinks they can win the game and get themselves out of debt. During voting, Player 098 votes to leave while Player 099 votes to stay. Player 001's deciding vote has all of them sent home safely.
We then see the two in their shabby little one bed room apartment, Player 098 sewing beads on what appears to be a wedding dress. We find out Player 098′s name is Doyun and Player’s 099 name is Wonil and they are on the verge of getting kicked out of their apartment due to them being unable to pay rent. Later, a loan shark comes to the couple’s apartment and threatens them, beating Wonil up while they make Doyun watch. With this, when they are given the chance to go back to the games, they take it as their last resort.
EPISODE THREE :: "The Man with the Umbrella (우산을 쓴 남자)"
DURATION OF SCREEN TIME :: 7 MINUTES
After waking up in the dorms, the players are more prepared and start forming alliances. The couple teams up Gihun, Sangwoo, Player 001, and Player 199, and note that most players returned. Before the next game, Doyun is seen painting her nails red on her bed, telling Player 212 she’d rather die than work with someone as “weak” as her when she approaches her in hopes of an alliance.
In the second game, the players are to pick a stamped shape out of a dalgona. Despite her team wanting them all to pick different shapes, Doyun picks a triangle, feeling as if Sangwoo knows something he isn’t telling the rest of the team. Doyun confronts him about this as they’re playing the game, seemingly trying to distract him. Sangwoo denies knowing anything and tells her to focus on herself.
Doyun and Wonil finish the second game and embrace once Wonil comes back into the dorms.
EPISODE FOUR :: "Stick to the Team (쫄려도 편먹기)"
DURATION OF SCREEN TIME :: 13 MINUTES
With a disproportional amount of food rationed to the players, tensions rise in the dorm. Doyun and Wonil keep to themselves, removing themselves from the drama until Deoksu kills another player, which only results in the prize money being increased. When this happens, Wonil warns Doyun a riot will break out during lights out because “people like Deoksu never play fair”. So, she paints markers on her teammates bed posts to help them navigate in the dark.
This move proves to be a smart move as a riot does break out and the markings help the group stay close to one another. Wonil pushes Doyun under a bed as he fights off anyone who tries to attack them, killing a player in the process. When Player 001 begs everyone to stop, the Front Man has the soldiers end the riot.
Wonil, clearly disturbed by having just killed someone, is comforted by Doyun, who cleans the blood off of him, telling him he did what he had to do. While the team begins to bond, Doyun asks Player 067 AKA Kang Saebyeok if she can paint her nails the same color as her, to signify they’re on the same team. At first, Seabyeok declines but after Doyun tells her a story of how her and her mother would paint their nails together before she passed, which is why she is always painting her nails. Upon hearing this, Seabyeok agrees to let her paint her nails, causing Doyun to smile.
In the third game, players are told to form groups of ten. Later, it’s seen all the players in Gihun’s team have at least one nail painted red.
EPISODE FIVE :: "A Fair World (평등한 세상)"
DURATION OF SCREEN TIME :: 5 MINUTES
Gihun's team win their tug of war match using Player 001 and Sangwoo's strategies, but most of them are unnerved at having to kill the opposing team. Expecting another riot, Gihun's team builds a barricade, which Deoksu mocks until Gihun points out that Deoksu's teammates have to turn on him sooner or later.
While the rest of the team builds a barricade, Doyun paints the rest of Player 001′s fingers upon his request, listening to him tell her how she reminds him of his daughter. Doyun tells Player 001 his daughter is lucky to have him to which Player 001 says that Wonil is lucky to have her to which she says “We’re both lucky. I hope it doesn’t run out,” to which Player 001 taps her nose and tells her, “I know it won’t.”
EPISODE SIX :: "Gganbu (깐부)"
DURATION OF SCREEN TIME :: 17 MINUTES
For the fourth game, players are told to pair up. Sangwoo is with Ali, Gihun with Player 001, and Saebyeok with Player 240. Wonil and Doyun decide to split up, Wonil saying he “got a gut feeling telling him they need to”. So, Doyun pairs up with Player 222, an older woman.
In the game, everyone is told to play a marble game of their choice against their partner, and whoever gets all their partner's marbles within 30 minutes will win. Doyun and Player 333 AKA Cheonsa play a slow and drawn out guessing game, talking about their lives as they do so. Doyun tells the story of how she met Wonil when they were in their first year of university and how she instantly fell in love with him because he was “everything she ever dreamed of”.
Cheonsa takes more of an interest in Doyun’s life than in the game for her survival. She tells Doyun that her husband died before they could have children and she’s lived alone ever since. Cheonsa asks if Doyun wants children to which Doyun tells her that she does and if she won, she’d use all her money to make sure her and Wonil’s baby would never struggle like they have. With that, Cheonsa smiles at her, resting her forehead on Doyun’s and telling her she deserves to become a mother and gives her the rest of her marbles, letting Doyun win.
After an emotional exchange, Doyun finally accepts the marbles and lets Cheonsa sacrifice herself. Cheonsa asks Doyun to hold her hand while she dies which Doyun agrees to. Cheonsa wishes Doyun luck before being killed. Doyun is escorted back to the dorms, obviously upset by what just occurred, but is relieved when she’s reunited with Wonil, embracing him and crying into his chest.
EPISODE SEVEN :: "VIPS"
DURATION OF SCREEN TIME :: 14 MINUTES
Before the fifth game, Doyun tells Seabyeok about Cheonsa and how she has to win for her. The pair discuss their partners from the last game, expressing guilt and sorrow for the teammates they lost. Doyun confesses to Seabyeok and Gihun that she doesn’t trust Sangwoo and they shouldn’t either. Gihun is spectacle but Seabyeok agrees with Doyun and the pair hold hands while Gihun tells Doyun everything will be okay.
In the fifth game the players, in predetermined order, have 16 minutes to cross a bridge with panels of either tempered or normal glass. The players at the front die off as the panels are tested. Doyun and Wonil choose corresponding numbers, Wonil choosing 12 and Doyun choosing 13. With every jump Wonil makes, Doyun helps hims choose even though the situation clearly distresses her and she tells him to be careful every time.
It’s revealed that Doyun is deathly afraid of heights and that’s why she’s struggling so much with this game. On the second to last glass tile, Wonil picks the wrong tile, falling to his death in front of Doyun. This sends her into distress, screaming and crying, unable to get up and continue the game after watching the love of her life die in front of her. Gihun and Seabyeok try to comfort her from afar, too far to actually comfort her to get her to continue.
Running out of time, Sangwoo starts comforting Doyun, who says she's too scared to keep going and can’t do it, and tells her they’ll jump the last tile together. Sangwoo jumps on Doyun’s tile, helping her up and holding her as they jump onto the second to last tile. Doyun tells Sangwoo they should pick the left tile as she holds onto him, but Sangwoo thinks they should pick the right one. After a second of Sangwoo panicking over the final choice, he throws Doyun at the right tile, revealing it to be the trick tile and sending her falling to her death.
The final shot of Doyun is of her and Wonil’s lifeless, bloodied, bodies laying next to each other.
