The Ruins (Part 5)
5 YEARS LATER.....
Secrecy sat down on the balcony of his room. He watched the Nightwings go about their lives. He had helped them all adjust to a regular Nightwing schedule, sleeping at day and living at Night. The tribe was thriving and doing great Ruby came and sat next to Secrecy and patted his back "Hey Sec, You did good" Secrecy smiled at Ruby, "I know," he said Ruby smiled and the two of them watched the NightWing kingdom live
THE END
Name(s): Bloodmoon [Original name] Darkstar [The dragonets called him this to make fun of him] Secrecy [He came up with this name for himself after he decided to separate himself from the world] Shadowstalker [He uses this name when he first meets people so that he can evaluate their trustworthiness] Outcast [Another name he uses with others]
Age: 15/ almost 16 years old
Gender: Male
Tribe: Nightwing
Personality: He acts like a loner and an introvert. He pretends to prefer being left alone but really he is one of the most caring, loving, nicest dragons you will ever meet. He pushes people away for their safety and so that his feelings won’t get hurt when they realized that he is a three-bloodmoon Nightwing with the power to see the last moments of a dragon.
Rank: He is a loner, an outcast from the tribe [See History]
Appearance: He is Dark Purple, like his Father, with a couple of white scales under his wings. He has a red teardrop shaped scale by his eye that he got after his first vision.
History: When he was a young dragonet [Around two years old], he was playing around in the Rainforest when he came across a bone and, thinking it was from a regular animal, he picked it up. He immediately began to shake and mumble about a venom lesson gone wrong. When he came back, he was confused and all alone in the Rainforest, the dragonets had gone to their parents who had warned everyone that their dragonets weren’t safe and that there was something strange going on. He looked around and bounded to the village to find his parents and tell them that the dragonets had abandoned him. He entered the village and there was no one in sight, when he knocked on Neighbor’s doors, they didn’t respond. He started to cry. His mother entered the village from the Rainforest and saw him crying and comforted him, she explained to the villagers that they shouldn’t be afraid of him and that he was just a regular dragonet. Five years later she died [He was seven at that point]. He went to her funeral and started to shake and moan about her last moments. The villagers got freaked out and his father disowned him. He fled in shame to the mountains and has lived there for the past eight years of his life.

black clover thoughts part 3
dumping more of my ideas/opinions right here for all of you to see, potentially followed by a wish to unsee:
picture this scene: it's a nice, sunny day at the foresaken realm and nacht and vanessa are in the middle of what can only be described as a jojo-esque mexican standoff with vanessa holding 4 tiny black bull robes, while nacht is going full on mama-bear while holding his 4 gremlin sized devils behind his back. "Hand them over" she says, with only a hint of alcohol in her breath which is kinda impressive considering its already noon. "Over my dead body" he replies, with hatred for black bulls overriding any sense of self preservation. Vanessa then proceeds to pluck Rouge from her shoulder and put it right back in her grimoire with a "that can be arranged".
as far as canon is concerned i find it hilarious that asta has a whole ass harem. like if i think about it, it makes sense. he's a really nice dude who is absolutely shredded, with not that many thoughts in his head, but on the off chance that he does get one of those its an absolute banger. bitches in clover discovered a whole ass pocket sized himbo and honestly good for them. i also find it equally hilarious that yuno, asta's rival who is like the 'tall and handsome' one that in any other anime you know he'd have girls hanging of off him is like an absolute loner and the only 'main cast' characters we see who actually crush on him are charmy (who is only motivated by the fact that he stopped her food from falling on the floor, which you know, bitch has priorities i'll give her that) and fucking bell, the most annoying elemental spirit to grace the card deck continent. in fact this dude is so bad at making connections with people that even klaus and mimosa who are his literal squadmates and spend all their time with him, have a stronger emotional connection to asta, some guy that they only see a handful of times at best. like i am aware that yuno spent most of his formative years relying on asta for majority of his socialisation but this is just sad, this bitch expects to be a wizard king with those communication skills?
i know we make fun of guache left and right and tbh he kinda deserves it, but at what point are we gonna admit that he's just some dude who is extremely traumatised after living on the streets for years and having to literally raise and provide for his younger sister while still being a kid himself? the parentification of the older siblings really does get swept under the rug and i feel like it doesnt get mentioned nowhere near enough and i say that as someone who has low-key raised and is still actively looking after their much younger sibling (and just to make it clear i am writing this with full awareness that the anime made gauche's character more 'sis-obsessed and creepy' than the manga where he can actually hold normal conversations that dont involve his sister with other people after his character development at the cave). also does clover kingdom not have some social services? like i know those 2 got cheated out of their parents' inheritance, but was there no body of authority( or maybe even a social circle) who would've noticed that like 2 whole ass kids from a noble family started living on the streets? and that gauche was literally commiting theft to feed his sister? and the magic knights' responce was 'aight, lets bag him up and put him in jail'

💖 dramatic
this is an excerpt from a rangi/kyoshi one-shot i did recently:
Rangi’s exhalation is loud in Kyoshi’s head, but perhaps almost silent in the world. “I used to see you guys around the mansion,” she confesses. “I would… watch you two. It was my duty, of course, to watch him. But not you.”
This isn’t exactly news to Kyoshi. Rangi has spent lifetimes saving her from herself and the world. Her bodyguard before she knew she needed one.
“I know.”
“You wanna know what I thought?” Rangi shakes her head, a strangled bit of laughter escaping her lips. “When I saw the way he’d admire you? I thought… The Avatar and his servant… what a pathetically tragic way to love. So caught up in the power imbalance of it all.”
“Rangi -”
“And then,” Rangi stares up at the sky now, squinting into the brightness of it all. “I fell right into it myself. Only you’re not the servant, Kyoshi. You’ve never been the servant. It’s me. In love with the great and powerful Avatar. Hopelessly and endlessly lost in the difference between duty and pleasure.”
That is absolutely wrong. If nothing else, Kyoshi knows that. “You’re not.”
“In love with you?”
No. That’s probably true, even if Kyoshi still doesn’t know why.
“You’re not my servant. You’ve never been, and you never will be.”
Rangi finally meets her gaze, and Kyoshi is surprised to see a glassiness there, reflecting in the bronze of her irises. She reaches out and runs a hand along the girl’s jawline, gently tracing every scar, every ghost of pain.
“Whoever made me the Avatar was really, really stupid,” she whispers. “You would’ve made a better one.”
“I’m not Earth Kingdom.”
“I don’t care.” Kyoshi knows how the cycle works. And she still thinks the Era of Rangi would outshine any past or future Avatar.

💖 comedic/light-hearted
this is an excerpt from a jay/carlos de vil one-shot:
“You have a crush?”
Carlos whipped around, staring at Jay who had just come up the stairs. “Where the fuck did you come from?”
“Uh -” Jay blinked, pointing down the stairs. “Downstairs? Look, someone said you go ... oh, you found a friend.” His gaze fell on the cat.
“He’s my new best friend.” Carlos was only half joking. “You’ve been demoted.”
Jay feigned hurt for a moment. On the whole, he didn’t look as drunk as Carlos would’ve expected. “So, this crush of yours,” he said at last. “Is he the reason you agreed to come?”
The irony wasn’t lost on Carlos, and if he weren’t too busy wishing the earth would swallow him whole, he might’ve laughed. “Uh - I don’t -”
“Come on,” Jay laughed. “I won’t tell anyone. Not even Mal. What’s he like?”
Carlos made a face. “The one time you’re not hammered at a party, huh? Just my luck.”
Jay shook his head. “Come on, man! Just give me a hint!”
Carlos mimed zipping his lips.
Jay is here. With you, his brain whispered unhelpfully. Not downstairs. Maybe you have a chance.
Jay smiled, oddly genuine. “I get that parties aren’t your thing, ‘Los. Must be one hell of a guy if he’s worth all this.”
“Yeah, well,” Carlos mumbled, picking at a spot on the carpet. “He looks cute when he says please.”

💖 alternate universe/timeline adjustment
this is a sneak peak of an unpublished equalist!asami/korra fic that i’m currently working on :) so stay tuned for more of this:
“Miss Sato,” a voice called from beyond the reinforced door. “You have a visitor.”
Her father, surely! Or one of his associates. But when door slid open and someone stepped inside, it wasn’t Hiroshi.
Asami turned towards the wall. “I don’t want to talk to you.”
“Asami, wait.” Korra didn’t try to get any closer. “I just -”
“Just what?” Asami muttered. Her voice dripped with sarcasm. “Wanted to see me put away? Make sure they’d gotten the right girl? A non-bender standing on the sidewalk at night is so dangerous, see. Glad you’ve got the police force cracking down on the issue.”
She could feel Korra’s frustration and revelled in it. She liked being able to get to Korra.
“No! That’s not! Ugh!” Korra paced, her footsteps heavy. “I don’t have much time! I just wanted to ask you to meet me! Away from anyone listening! Under the Silk Road Bridge.”
“I’d love to, but you see,” Asami gestured around her cell. She still hadn’t dropped the cynical act. “I’m kinda busy at the moment.”
“Your father is already trying to buy your way out,” Korra told her. “You’ll be released before most of Republic City wakes up. I know you, Asami. You wouldn’t… you’re not -”
“Not what, Korra?” Asami finally looked at her. Hard. “Like the rest of the non-benders? One of the good ones?”
“You betrayed us!”
“And you couldn’t save those people from being rounded up like animals!”
Korra opened her mouth, but no words came out. She threw back her head in frustration. “Fine! I’ll leave you alone! But tonight, at midnight, I’ll be under that bridge. I hope you will be, too. I just want to talk.”

💖 angst/pining
this is an excerpt from a casey/izzie fic:
Casey couldn’t breathe.
She was used to the breathlessness that came with running, the burning and tightening of her lungs as she demanded more from them. But when her feet skimmed across the pavement, racing, racing, like her heartbeat, it didn’t scare her. Rather, she relished it, craved it. The way her whole body felt alive, how she could feel every tingle in her arms and legs, how everything seems to still and grow quiet around her - she loved it.
This was different.
Her vision tunneled, entirely swallowed by Izzie and the boy in the corner who had his tongue in her mouth. The people around her suddenly felt too close and the music too loud. She wished she had Sam’s noise canceling headphones.
Casey wasn’t even trying to inhale anymore as she stared, watching the girl whose lips she’d taken a chance on kiss a boy - a stranger. She could feel her chest burning, could feel the rest of her body screaming at her to take a breath, to do something. But she couldn’t. She could only stare until the need for air became too much.
She gasped, her feet moving against her will. The room smelled like too much weed, stinging her eyes and nose. Casey began to back towards the door.
It wasn’t that she was heartbroken; no, she knew what heartbreak felt like, and right now, that space was occupied by Evan.
This was on her. She’d decided to break off something good and consistent and wonderful to chase after someone who played hot and cold like Evan played video games. She had no one to blame but the person in the mirror.
Somehow, after being jostled around by several other bodies, she made it to the hallway. It was quiet, thankfully, the noise of the party muffled to the pulsing of the base inside the hotel room where she knew Izzie was still liplocked with that tall stranger.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
How could she have thrown away something so good for this?
She wanted to go back to being normal; to the time when she looked at Evan’s eyes and didn’t see Izzie’s reflecting back at her.

💖 hurt/comfort
this is an excerpt from a nico minoru/karolina dean fic:
“You’re still glowing.” The words came out low. Nico’s eyes flicked up and down her girlfriend’s illuminated body, taking it all in. She knew Karolina could control her light now, which could only mean one thing.
“I wanted you to see it,” Karolina admitted, ducking her head. Now that Nico’s eyes were open, she could see just how much fear flickered behind Karolina’s warm glow. She had removed her arms from Nico now and twisted her hands together in front of herself anxiously. “I needed you to see it.”
Nico swallowed hard, unable to pull her eyes away. The light brought so many emotions flooding back. The first time she’d seen Karo glow. Early nights at the Hostel when the power would short out and Karolina walked around like a glowing flashlight. All the times Nico ran her hands down her hips and kissed her neck and watched her glow brighter than all the stars in the sky.
“I see it,” Nico promised.
“You’re not scary,” was Karolina’s response.
They were words Nico had said many times to Karolina, but never had anyone said them to her.
“Then why am I… like this?”
“Nico.” Karolina shook her head. “Your darkness isn’t evil. It just… is. And I know you can master your magic without the Staff. You’re more than its power.”
“Am I?” Nico didn’t know what she was. She’d been trying to figure it out for a lot longer than she cared to admit.
She was the Dead Girl’s Sister. She was That Goth Bitch. She was a loner, an outcast, a freak.
“You’re Nico Minoru,” Karolina said quietly. “And that’s… that’s enough.”

💖 fluff
this mal/evie moment is an excerpt from longer fic titled In Loco Parentis:
Evie had really outdone herself. She’d managed to put together a figure cutting, sapphire satin dress that fell off the shoulders in the most tasteful way possible. With her dark makeup and striking updo, Evie could’ve passed as at least twenty-five. And Mal had never wanted to kiss her more.
“I’m proud of you,” Mal said during a quiet moment, rubbing the other girl’s shoulders gently. “You look great. You did good.”
“Well,” Evie laughed, tipping her head back. “I did well.”
“Whatever, princess.” Mal’s voice had gone soft, her chin resting on Evie’s shoulder. Unable to help herself, she pressed a gentle kiss there, glancing up to see if she’d overstepped. But Evie didn’t look upset; on the contrary, her eyes were wide and her cheeks pink.
“So that’s what it’s like when a girl kisses you,” she breathed, tucking Mal’s hair behind her ear.
“Believe me,” Mal purred. “You ain’t seen nothing yet.” She waited for Evie to correct her grammar again, but instead, the girl pulled Mal gently out from behind her, capturing Mal’s lips with her own.
And just like that, Evie was kissing her.
“You’ve got lipstick on your face,” Evie whispered as she pulled away, doing her best to wipe it off.
“I don’t care.”
“I can’t fail you today.” Evie tugged at the hem of her dress, sighing. “I can’t. Mal, this means so much to you.”
But for the first time in a very, very long time, revenge on her mother was the last thing on Mal’s mind. Evie’s eyes and lips and voice took up all the space, blooming in her chest. “You can’t fail me,” she promised.
And that was the sheer and utter truth.

💖 single character-centric
this is an excerpt from a catra-centric exploration:
She’s lost count of the nail marks.
When Hordak first threw her in this cell, Catra resolved to count every single tally Shadow Weaver left on the walls. But now that she’s fifty-two marks in - or maybe fifty-three? - her determination is beginning to waver.
She also doesn’t remember Shadow Weaver being locked up for fifty days. Maybe the nail marks don’t represent days at all - or maybe the old lady is as crazy as she is evil.
Lowering her gaze to the green glowing shackles around her hands, Catra tries - not for the first time - to wriggle out of them. Their buzzing is growing increasingly irritating.
How dare Shadow Weaver leave? Did she stop to think what would happen to Catra? Did it even cross her mind that she might be thrown in this cell as her replacement? Or maybe she did and just didn’t care?
Catra’s face twists in a grim smile. Of course her own fate hasn’t given Shadow Weaver any pause. She got what she wanted.
She tries to think back, to find the place where she went wrong - a single moment she can pinpoint where her plans went to shit. But the pieces just don’t fit. Nothing adds up.
Because Catra has done everything right. She’s climbed the ranks. She’s done her job well. She’s accomplished everything Adora could have and more. She’s surpassed even Shadow Weaver’s authority!
And yet, here she is. In chains. Awaiting punishment.
Adora always comes out on top. Hasn’t that been beaten into her since day one? Adora gets to walk away unharmed, with her new best friends and glowing hair. Adora gets Shadow Weaver, despite being a defector, a traitor, a failure!
I would’ve stayed for you.
Catra kicks out with her back foot and pushes away the tray someone delivered to her earlier. She’s not that hungry anyway - and certainly not for brown ration bars.
The tray makes a satisfying clatter as it skids across the floor, and Catra bares her teeth in a halfway smile. If she’s going down, she’s going to go down fighting. She’ll make it as difficult and as painful for Hordak as she can - right until the very end.
-----
💖 second person
this is an excerpt from a summer/tessa fic i wrote by request:
She’s happy now, you know.
She’s brighter and happier and just really fucking in love.
You can see it. You can hear it in the way she talks and the way her eyes light up when she walks into the room. You notice how she perks up when her name is dropped during casual conversation and how she makes a point of talking about her at every possible offhanded moment.
And honestly, you’re happy, too. You’re happy for her. You’re happy for them. Because they’re just so cute, and everyone says so.
And if you notice that Tessa is wearing her sweater - the one you used to wear because it made her mad and got those sparkling eyes to fix on you for just a few more seconds -  you don’t say anything.
Because it wasn’t like the sweater belonged to you or was anything other than a polyester cardigan with a small hole in the elbow.
It’s not like when you draped it over your shoulders, she would roll her eyes and grumble and demand you give it back. Your heart wouldn’t jump, and your mind wouldn’t rush with the adrenaline that came with shooting a snarky response.
It’s not like you memorized the way she used to scoff - that sound in the back of her throat - or how she’d wave her hand dismissively while you wondered what it would be like to hold it and never let go.
It’s not like you’ve ever wanted anything from her - attention or otherwise.
It’s not like that sweater gave you an excuse to touch her shoulders, to catch a whiff of her perfume, to pretend the old sleeves were a good substitute for her arms.
When words finally do form in your mouth, they’re not the ones you want to say. They’re snarky or sarcastic or snide. They’re perfectly in-character for you, the airhead, the fair-weather friend, or just The Bitch.
Plain and simple. Easy to categorize and even easier to overlook.
You won’t think about what it feels like to hug her or how comforting it is to rest your head on her shoulder for those brief, world-stopping seconds - so close you can smell her shampoo and whatever else she uses to make those curls behave themselves. Those moments are meant to be locked away, to be kept safe, where they can’t become anything they shouldn’t. Because the two of you have come so far, but nowhere near far enough.
Yeah, you’re not my type.
It’s confirmation of a dead end.

lulu does flash reviews again
hey it’s been a while since i did one of these, anyway i just finished Princess Connect and I have some Thoughts so this is genuinely just me rambling about it
So, Princess Connect Re:Dive. It’s essentially a 12 episode long commercial for the associated role playing mobile game.  It follows the adventures of the Gourmet Guild, a group of four adventurers whose goal is to investigate and enjoy the various foods of their fantasy world.
The Guild is made up of Yuuki, ostensibly our protagonist: a somewhat blank-slate sort of character who’s obviously supposed to be whoever your face character in the mobile game is, but who is actually, surprisingly, rather charming. He has lost his memories after some unknown battle he participated in with a bunch of former party members, and tends to respond to things in monosyllables, preferring instead to communicate with thumb’s ups and “mn!” in most cases. Despite this, he seems to be a very sweet boy who cares about his friends and is eager to do his best.  Personally, I found him to be kind of a breath of fresh air in terms of male protagonists of fantasy shows otherwise populated by women.  There’s not a single bit of “lucky pervert” tropes, he doesn’t seem at all interested in pursuing or flirting with any of the other girls, and only one of the girls is interested in him romantically. He’s generally pretty straightforward and good-hearted, so at worst I could call him boring - but even so, again, I found him charming.
Next is Kokkoro, an elf from a small village sent by someone who appears to be a goddess of some kind to find Yuuki and assist him as he recovers his memories. Kokkoro is, in a word, cute. She’s the only member of the cast who is interested in Yuuki romantically.  Despite this happening immediately after she meets him, it sort of makes some sense to me, since she’s clearly been taught that he’s a special and important person whom she is duty-bound to serve, so it makes sense to me that she would hold him in high regard - and since he’s just genuinely so...genuine, it makes sense that it wouldn’t take long for a more sheltered girl to develop feelings for him. And, happily, she has a personality outside of this attraction as well: she’s reliable, patient, and good at sewing, and she enjoys spending time with the rest of the guild.  Her silly faces she makes every time Yuuki gets chewed on by a wolf are hilarious, too.
Third up is Pecorine, who, while Yuuki is supposedly the protagonist, is pretty much set up to be the real protagonist of the show. Pecorine is not-so-subtly secretly the princess of this fantasy world, Landosol, however, it appears for some reason someone else is acting as ruler. Pecorine is ridiculously strong, ridiculously peppy, and always hungry. She’s literally made of nothing but love, joy, and excitement for whatever the next day will bring. She’s always helping people and seems to consider making others happy to be her life goal, alongside eating lots of yummy food. Everyone she encounters eventually becomes her best friend, even when they start off by trying to steal from her. She’s straightforward, doesn’t seem to notice when people don’t have her best interests in mind, and yet, beneath that, she is extremely lonely and vulnerable. If you couldn’t tell, she’s far and away my favorite character of the show.
And finally, there’s Karyl: a cat girl who is, in my opinion, the perfect example of a cat girl. She’s initially a loner who doesn’t see the need for friends, and is, apparently, supposed to assassinate Pecorine. As Pecorine doesn’t notice, she quickly inducts Karyl as her new girlfriend best friend, and Karyl, for all of her tsundere, don’t-touch-me cat vibes, absolutely starts falling for Pecorine’s kindness back.  While she’s the one to call out the guild’s stupid plans and ideas, she generally ends up joining in on the shenanigans, much to her eternal chagrin.
So, I don’t mean to make this just a description of the show, because I do have thoughts and opinions, but I felt like setting up my feelings on the main cast was important before I got into the details of the show itself.  From this point forward, there will be spoilers.
So, what this show does right:
As I mentioned in my talk about Yuuki, in terms of “1 male protagonist surrounded by girls”, it’s a relief to watch a show where the main cast is just all a bunch of good friends and they’re not just all hanging on the bland main character.  Each of the cast is given their own time to develop their own personalities both with each other and outside of each other, and they’re all, genuinely, rather endearing.  There are two characters who show up later who are a bit annoying about their care over Yuuki (calling themselves his big and little sister respectively), but since they aren’t main cast members and connect the show to a larger “what happened before this?” narrative, I didn’t mind it so much.  Plus, despite a cast of all girls in a mobile game, outside of a few skimpy outfits and Pecorine’s occasional boob jiggle, there wasn’t a SINGLE bit of fanservice, which shocked me for this genre. No upskirts, no accidental boob touches, no lewd comments or innuendos.  I was floored, and in a good way.
The character design really isn’t bad for a show based on a mobile game. Characters are distinct in design and personality. The best design is, of course, the girl who is Just a Llama.
I actually really liked being thrown into this world where it was very obvious that something had already happened Before, but you were only given pieces of it.  It built a very intriguing premise by starting us off seemingly after the climactic battle goes wrong, and adds a sense of unease here or there about knowing that something is a little bit off, but you don’t quite know what.  Not getting all of the answers at the end of the show wasn’t a dealbreaker, either, because I knew I wouldn’t going in - it’s a mobile game show. The story is still going in the mobile game, so they won’t play all their cards in the adaptation.
Karyl and Pecorine are definitely the main characters of the show, and while I’m sure it wasn’t intentional, their story very much feels like a love story, and I just really, really enjoyed that for what I expected to see going in, I instead got two girls who were allowed to have a complicated and yet very sweet relationship that developed slowly over the series into a truly beautiful climax.  Speaking of Pecorine, as well, I have to give some props to the plot twist about her character. It was obvious to me for a while that she was the princess of Landosol, and I assumed that her parents were dead.  I kept wondering why she was leaving her people to the whims of her impersonator instead of taking back her throne, and it was something that sort of bothered me throughout her seemingly cheerfully ignoring what her usurper was doing to her kingdom.  Finding out that the fake princess had, in fact, simply replaced Pecorine with herself in everyone’s memories, leaving Pecorine with no idea what to do and deciding to disappear knowing that even her own parents didn’t remember her as their daughter was a shocking, and powerful, plot twist.
When it’s good, it’s really good.  There are some genuinely heartfelt and powerful moments.  The animation is surprisingly good, beautiful to watch especially during fight scenes.  The final scene especially with its emphasis on Karyl and Pecorine really touched me, as it was clear they put a lot of effort into just the last few frames to make it really touching.
And here’s what this show does wrong:
When I said that when it’s good, it’s really good, the same can be said that when it’s bad, it’s bad.  The main problem with this show is that it wants to be everything.  It wants to be a comedy.  It wants to be a drama.  It wants to have deep character drama and heartfelt moments. It wants to have intense battles and evil villains alongside a story about four friends making sandwiches out of monster meat.  The comedy bits and drama bits are both solid enough on their own, but smushed together, it makes for a tonally dissonant show that cheapens some of the more heartfelt moments.
The show takes way too long to even get into its main conceit, too.  I think it wasn’t until episode 4 that they started their Gourmet Guild - and then even after that, the food hunting sort of disappeared in a lot of episodes so that you kind of forgot what their goals even were.  And even when the food episodes happened, they almost felt like filler.  Because of the show’s lack of focus, it was hard to truly enjoy any part of it.
And I cannot forget to mention that though I praised the character design in the good stuff section, there were some...concerns.  Episode 3 introduces a fatphobic, borderline racist design. He is shown as cruel, violent, gleefully mean, and morbidly obese in a cast that is otherwise made up of skinny characters.  And worse, he’s the only brown character in a sea of pale, white-coded characters.  His appearance in episode 3 almost made me stop watching.  He showed up briefly in several more episodes after this, and it sucked every single time.  Despite a lot of the other things I loved about this show, I really cannot recommend it to anyone with a clean conscience just because of this character. He’s distressing and uncomfortable to me, so I can’t imagine how a POC might feel while watching it.
Genuinely, if even one or two of their “here’s a cute girl” designs had been Black or brown, I would have felt way better.  But the juxtaposition of this guy being the only dark skinned character in the show combined with his abhorrent personality just really, really distresses me, and I think it’s a warning that people should be aware of before giving it a try.
That being said, overall, I don’t think Princess Connect Re:Dive was a bad show.  As I said, there was a lot of elements I enjoyed, and I will probably go look and see if there’s any Karyl/Pecorine art out there, and since the app is Japanese only, I might even go and read the continued plot somewhere.
So this wasn’t much of a “flash review”, I had a lot to say, I guess lol.  Anyway, if anyone else watched it, please let me know what you thought~ I’d be interested to hear anyone else’s take.  For my part, I’ll give Princess Connect a solid 6/10.

Compare and Contrast: The ‘Rival’ Characters
In each house there’s like this one guy who doesn’t really get along with the House Leader
I swear this is the last rambly essay. Or... second to last.
Felix
Perhaps the most “typical” rival - The Blue Lions in general are designed around basic fantasy or anime archetypes with a twist here and there so its not too suprising that Felix starts off like a less chliched/ more reasonable variant of your basic anime rival.
He’s your basic ‘Arrogant Kung Fu Guy’, a loner,  not very friendly, focussed on gaining strenght, used to be friends with the MC once, not a fan of “the power of friendship” but not immune to it either... though unlike most examples he’s not envious or obsessed with beating Dimitri nor actually particularly arrogant. When Leonie beats him with a trap in their support he’s like “Wow thanks, you made me aware of a potential weakness”
Like your classic anime rival he is the strongest of the Lions apart from Dimitri himself, but has a contrasting fighting style - Dimitri is big, tanky and has immense brute strenght, but is clumsy; Felix is lithe, agile and has a very skill-based fighting style. The second strongest deer or eagle would not be Lorenz and Ferdinand.  It’s definitely Lysithea for the deer, and probably either Hubert or Petra for the eagles.
Also like your classic anime rival, he’s got a backstory that parallels the hero’s. He also lost a beloved relative in the tragedy of Duscur and also still feels a lot of attachment to people who are gone, but he deals with it very differently than Dimitri. Unlike most cases you can’t really say that one of them did ir ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ both have their dysfunctionalities resulting from the loss if anything Felix is more level-headed though his rejection of all attachment isn’t grounded in maturity either.
They managed to have the classic “ideals are BS, only strenght matters” line actually make sense in a non-voldemordy way for once if you consider the context where he grew up, he definitely has a point. Though he would protest the notion he actually has a moral code of his own (Dimitri clearly offends it - though mostly he’s really thrown of by/ doesn’t know what to make of the Dr. jekyll and Mr. hyde situation) he just wasn’t ever told that it “counts” as it’s not what passes for morals in Faerghus. He’s present and results oriented, rather than guiding principles or rules of thumb he likes to focus on wether it actually saves lifes. (”We’re protecting your subjects not your ego”)
Likewise it makes more sense for him to be the team contrarian when Dimitri actually does have no plan or regard for safety while he’s in Avenger Mode, but ultimately he very much wants Dimitri to succeed.
Another thing of note is that since Claude and Edelgard are revolutionaries, their rivals are the token traditionalists of their respective teams, whereas Dimitri is someone who wants to reinstate the order - He doesn’t like oppression any more than the others but he thinks the existing social institutions have their merit; As he sees it they’d work just fine if they were just carried out virtuously and as a service to the people, not selfishly abused. Hence his rival is one of the two more independent-minded Lions.
Lorenz
Of the three he’s probably the one who most dislikes their leader and who is most genuinely flawed at the start of the game.
With Ferdinand it’s not more than a passing first impression you quickly notice that while he may be naive about how he comes across he isn’t actually arrogant nor does he hate or have seditious intentions toward Edelgard, he’s actually a deeply good guy, a straightforward hero to contrast Edelgard as an anti-hero. He lived an easy live in a good environment which allowed him to develop his potential to the fullest whereas Edelgard was forced to resort to things she doesn’t like because of her harsh life and precarious situation. She just wants to live quietly in peace but had to to grand impactful actions because someone needs to fix the broken system and she happened to have power she never asked for, meanwhile Ferdinand really wants to be a politician and go down in history but is afraid that he’s not making enough of an impact.  Felix is more complex, he truly IS mean and spiteful as a real character flaw (with Dedue and Dimitri he has arguably valid principle-based reason to dislike them; But with Sylvain and Ingrid he’s just being mean for meanness’ sake due to his own issues with attachment and says some genuinely awful things to them) but its the one sharp edge on an overall principled dude who actually does care for his comrades, Dimitri included, and he is not a bad person.
Lorenz meanwhile is certainly not what he seems either, he’s not just a superior twat and actually very dutiful, believes that the nobility should actually live up to their obligations and is sort of a cautious shrewd political mind, surely not half as naive as Ferdinand. At the same time he has real shortcomings, at the start of the game he’s somewhat immature and frivolous (very apparent in his pre-timeskip supports with Sylvain and Byleth), though his intentions are not per se impure (he really wants to marry and is actually picky and romantic),  he just doesn’t get it in his head that those girls he’s hitting on find him annoying.
But eh, he was like 18 at the time. More damning is his callousness and lack of perspective. He doesn’t really look past his immediate surroundings and the self-interest of himself and his own, and at several times alledges that he wouldn’t have particularly minded if Claude wound up dead in a ditch. He doesn’t know him and genuinely doesn’t care about him, making cold, dissing comments all the time in early part 1.
Of course when you get more context and get further in both their support chain and the plotyou find that he actually has good reasons to distrust Claude, it’s not just snobbishness and prejudice he just really cares about the Alliance and doesn’t trust it to someone who just showed up out of nowhere under suspicious circumstances after the previous Duke had an ‘accident’ (which, ironically, was the work of Lorenz’ own father) - but that doesn’t change that he’s genuinely a little callous.
If you don’t spare Claude on the empire route Lorenz stands out as the only person who will diss him - everyone else, imperial leadership included, is either sad or gives him the worthy opponent treatment, even Hubert who’s not usually the sort to point out his enemies’ redeeming features. He will also diss him in the Kingdom route and express spite that he didn’t get to be Alliance leader.
Indeed while Ferdinand and Felix will wind up supporting Edelgard/ Dimitri if they’re not recruited, Lorenz always opposes Claude unless you’re on the GD route. Even some of the arrogance is real, see his A support with Byleth, he really thought that commoners were ultimately less consequential/influential even though, as he later admits, Byleth was right in front of him the whole time.
To some extent this might be due to his upbringing his father was very much a “Look out for Number one” sorta person who cares only for the wealth of his own territory the rest of the Alliance be damned. Compared to that starting point Lorenz is already a whole lot more considerate as he thinks that his father at least ought to consider the rest of the Alliance, and would certainly NOT stab a rival in the back or callously kill commoners as collateral damage, even at the start of the game.
I don’t wanna get too down on Lorenz tho, once you get to know him he’s adorable and sensitive (his caution comes from actually being somewhat afraid/anxious underneath) and as a friend he is very helpful generous and considerate. I love that support where he keeps offering Ignatz jobs, it’s probably his best moment. He got layers and ultimately ends up having a positive political legacy.  And if you’re playing GD or CF he even gets more open-minded by the end.
He also makes for an excellent contrast to Claude - both are somewhat self-interested, opportunistic and distrustful, but Lorenz is cautious and conventional, whereas Claude is unconventional and a risk-taker. Ultimately what brings them together is appreciation for the other’s shrewdness and good intentions, they’re both natural politicians. They also both love poetry.
And Claude’s storyline is one of bringing different people together and convincing them to come to his side/ have them come around. He uses deception to accomplish it, yes, but ultimately he wants people to see his point - Even someone who is as different from him as Lorenz is. After all he wants to build a world where there’s a place for everyone. So when he finally wins over Lorenz halfway through part 2 it means a lot to him. Claude probably half doubts that it’s possible but he wants everyone to truly come around.
Whereas Edelgard would surely prefer convincing as well, but failing that she’d strongarm or eliminate someone like that. (Though it has to be said that she would do so because she cares deeply about the net result and one priviliged twat’s feelings, or even her own,  are not more important that ending oppression asap IMHO Both have a point and both have their shortcomings.)
Another Detail is that while Ferdinand and Felix are each from the Second most Powerful house in their respective countries, the number two spot in the Alliance is probably held by the Gonerils; But the Alliance by nature is more flexible and there is more rising and falling in influence based on wealth merit and your ability to convince and rally the other nobles. Lorenz actually could take Claude’s job, and early on, actually wanted to, so he’s the closest to a real political rival - and Claude’s strenght is more in politics and planning than it is in punching so this is fitting.
The other two are more one-sided, as Dimitri flat out ignores any hostility coming from Felix and would really like to be friends again (also Felix wants Dimitri on the throne ‘cause he’s still vastly better than Chaos or Cornelia, he’d just like him to act reasonable and get his act together, and is ready to support him once he does) and Ferdinand, try as he might, is simply no match for Edelgard in any way as she is the single strongest individual among the younger characters, she’s evenly matched with Byleth in the Church Route reunion scene and ends up with the highest total stats out of all the playable characters.
Ferdinand
Though he’s introduced as always trying to one-up her, makes sure to tell you that he’s the one in charge when you first walk in (no doubt naively repeating something his father said), can end up being full-blown enemies with her in 3 out of 4 routes including the Church route, he doesn’t actually have any sort of personal beef with Edelgard and out of the three ‘rivals’ he probably has the least actual issues with/ dislike toward his respective house leader.
Even when they wind up as enemies he’s actually one of the characters who speaks of Edelgard in a respectful fashion after her death (in GD he mentions how she wanted the next ruler to be chosen based on merit and how she really believed it), and at one point offers Hubert to let the two of them flee right under the Church’s nose if you have them fight. (Especially notable since the Church route is probably the least sympathetic toward Edelgard)
He IS the one who gets the classic rival trait of being competitive, jealous and attention-seeking - I tend to hate these sorts of characters but that’s usually because they are petty, spiteful people who begrudge other’s happiness and are always putting others down so I expected to hate him but actually ended up loving him to no end because he isn’t like that at all. He’s deeply good and has a heart of pure gold. He never lashes out. If someone dislikes him, his reaction is usually to come up some grandiose elaborate gesture to prove his worth and make them like him (Mercedes, Bernie, Dorothea etc.)
Ferdinand was raised by an actual supervillain who clearly wanted to bring him up with an ellbow mentality but that clearly bounced off his inherent goodness like teflon. His sheltered luxurious upbringing might’ve left him a bit naive pre-timeskip in ways that make him come off a tad arrogant or annoying, but he doesn’t think he’s superior to anyone - indeed he works hard to be worthy of his inheritance and justify being in the position that he’s in. He’s somewhat aware that his father’s a crook but his response to that disillusionment is to become the real thing himself. He wants to actually be exceptional and live up to the hype.  The old man surely told him that he’s got to make the princess his bitch with some thinly veiled euphemisms but he kinda didn’t catch the seditious treasonous parts of it.
He doesn’t hate Edelgard nor does he wanna doublecross her or put her down, rather, he figures that he’ll be a pretty poor Minister if he can’t hold his own against her he must have something of his own to offer and just generally strives to constantly improve himself. He also strongly believes in thinking for oneself (in that sense he’s kinda like Felix but its a more intellectual thing for him) - In the Church route that’s why he views it as his duty to oppose Edelgard even if it costs him alot. If he sticks with them instead, he eventually realizes that she and Hubert are actually all for independent thought and actually pretty open to his input once they come to trust him (which doesn’t really happen on the other routes). If recruited to the Kindom he’ll also not be afraid to criticise Dimitri. Can’t recall any scene where he criticises or defies Claude right of the bat but then again Claude doesn’t exactly go around saying what his objectives are.
He certainly sticks out among the eagles the way Felix does among the lions - not quite to the same extent cause he’s not that polished and inadvertedly annoys people a lot early on, but they’re all pragmatic, antisocial or both and also largely unconventional and quirky, whereas Ferdinand is very sociable, optimistic, has high ideals and  traditional. He’s the one among the nobles who actually wants his father’s job, he’s also the one believer among the largely secular Adrestians, though he’s not exceptionally devout. Though he values collectedness, he’s an expressive romantic sop and very genuine in contrast to the more stoic and unsentimental Edelgard and Hubert (as well as Byleth if they’re on the team), i mean Dorothea’s also extroverted and friendly but she’s often wearing a mask and kinda jaded too. Caspar’s nice and honest but he basically lives to fight.  Basically if the Crimson Flower cast were Section Nine, Ferdinand would be Togusa - and like the Major, Hubert and Edelgard actually appreciate him for that though this is not immediately obvious to him.
Ferdinand obviously matures some as the storyline continues but - consider that Lorenz basically gets schooled and Claude is 100% right, and Felix gets to get over himself and stop being so tsundere, he’s not all wrong but he’s not right either and in his Kingdom route endings usually winds up continuing his dad’s legacy after all, even winding up in one of those chivalric tales he used t hate in his paired endings with Dimitri. Lorenz’ position is understandable, Felix has a valid point and comes from a good place, but largely, they are wrong. Ferdinand does somewhat change what he thinks but it’s more of a hegelian synthesis. He’s a helpful ally who contributes a lot and Edelgard and Hubert kinda know this before he does because he was busy comparing himself to her. He’s not gonna beat Edelgard at Edelgard stuff but he has a lot to offer precisely because he’s Ferdinand, and because he’s different from them and actually helps them improve and refine their plans.
After all if you want to replace a flawed system you’ve got to understand why it persisted and your new system has to solve all the problems the old one solves and then some, if it is to last.
Unlike Felix Ferdinand’s very proud of his country, but this is in the context of the Eagles’ main storyline being to put right what their parents done fucked up (or, in the case of Dorothea and Petra, what created the sucky circumstances they lived in) whether they do it with Edelgards revolution or through reconciling their homeland with the church.
Of course Ferdinand isn’t blind to his homeland’s flaws and wants to fix it because he cares about it.
Leonie
Now onto the MC’s own designated rival.
She probably can be said to be have a shade of petty jealousy but since it’s centered around a shared mentor figure and largely harmless it comes off with a distinct annoying-younger-sister vibe more than a more serious rivalry. She never really gets overly upset that she can’t beat Byleth; She just kinda keeps trying undeterred; Might as well shoot for a high target.
Notably she is actually a remarkably chill person in her other supports and has a lot more characterization than just the jeralt thing, with her poor village background and frugal, pragmatic outlook being pretty interesting, she just doesn’t get along with Byleth, but since they’re the POV character and Leonie is kinda constantly aggro at them that works in her detriment. For all that I’m frequently praising how even the more gimmicky characters are seldom one-note I still think they could’ve eased up on the gimmicks now and again.
On the other hand, it shouldn’t be so strange that even Byleth can’t immediately get along with everyone xD
Much like most of Bernadetta’s supports start with her freaking out and running away, Byleth’s usually go like this: At C the various characters act largely how they act toward everyone else (the nice characters are nice, the blunt ones are blunt etc.), then at B they spill their life story and worries and Byleth is like “pat pat”, by the second half of part II the monastery dialogues also evidence some level of fondness and familiarity even with the students that aren’t in your house  (which is important cause most of them are pretty sad and apologetic about having to fight Byleth later on)
But of course there’s exceptions here, you have cases like Felix and Edelgard who instantly like them because of obvious similarities, people who take distinctly longer to be won over such as Hubert and Dimitri but ultimately do click with them after a certain point, and then there’s cases like Claude and Dorothea who DO like Byleth but are still somewhat stumped by their somewhat unreadable demeanor, they’re used to dazzling ppl with their charm, not getting the expected reaction and hence their defense mechanisms are lowkey active, indignation for Dorothea and suspicion for Claude.
Leonie doesn’t fit either category she sorta tries to apologize for her latest outburst each time but then ends up going off again.
On the one hand the fact that she isn’t overawed isn’t always a negative thing, it’s like she’s part of the family, and particularly the human side of it.
After they merge with Sothis most the students are awed and excited about their new power/looks and comming divine revelation - some of the eagles are notably cooler on this as they’re not as religious, Bernie’s lowkey scared, Dorothea seems kinda worried about them/ that this will distance them from normal people, Edelgard is secretly heartbroken cause she takes it to mean that they’re destined to be enemies - they’re not the only ones tho Lysithea notably worries about side effects (she would), but then there’s Leonie who’s like “But it’s still you inside there, right? That’s what important.” Like... I think Byleth really needed to hear that.
Instead of “wow everyone mysteriously likes you, you must truly be blessed” she’s like “you accept ppl as they are just like your dad no wonder people like you. ”, she just looks at them with a different perspective.
I mean Cyril and Catherine get a bit jelly that they get so much of Rhea’s attention but then that’s tied up in their own adulation of Rhea and so ultimately the magical destiny thing.
Even the infamous B support evidences a somewhat different, less distanced dynamic - Anger is a natural stage of grief but she’s going off in Byleth’s face when they’re still half in schock, which is a not so great situation but also different from the usual dynamic where Byleth is the calm in-control leader person while their conversation partner spills their soul - they can’t be, because they’re involved. Jeralt’s death affects them both in different ways and that leads to a rather painful clash.
Contrast wise Leonie is maybe what Byleth might’ve been like if they had been born normally. She’s also kinda sassy has a pragmatic fighting style and comes from a common, nonfancy background where she had to work on her own survival by catching her own food. But she doesn’t have the magical destiny/ random religion ready to throw itself at her feet, as she often points out she doesn’t have a crest or money so she has to be shrewd to even get her hands on good equipment instead of having a mystical legendary artifact just falling into her lap.
One wonders if Byleth and Edelgard ever ended up hiding out in some odd place in order to escape from two lance wielding redheards looking to duel them XD
Outcomes
Though Ferdinand gets this dialogue where he wonders about what might’ve been and laments the “Adrestia-shaped hole in his heart” his endings are actually pretty similar regardless of what faction he ends up with. He almost always becomes a statesman or politician of some sort.
He didn’t rely on things just falling into his lap so when they stop doing that he still succeeds, besides with his optimistic go-getter attitude and determination, it’s not a surprise that he’d be fine no matter what happens. It’s a big shock to him when his land gets confiscated on non-empire routes but he always deals somehow and comes out on top through the trials and tribulations.
By contrast Felix gets tons of unique dialogue for each route (with the most, but not complete overlap between VW and SS) and his endings are vastly different depending on wether he sticks with Dimitri or not to the point that even paired endings with the same characters can be vastly different. Generally speaking if he sticks with Dimitri he suceeds his dad and becomes Dimitri’s Right Hand Man (or Left Hand Man depending on where Gilbert and Dedue end up) whereas on the other routes he becomes a wandering mercenary and kinda doesn’t seem as satisfied with the independence and strenght that he used to want so badly.
Only Bernie and Alois come significantly close to having such hugely divergent endings based on route (He becomes the leader of the Knights of Seiros - unless he turns against them then he just chills with his family. Bernie gets a lot more “confident” endings in CF, the one with Byleth is a 180 and the Hubert one is similar, also she’s out of her room a lot more and talks about traveling etc. and even there it’s not ALL endings nor quite as pervasive. )
As for Lorenz there’s three ways it can go. If not recruited he plays ball with the empire out of self-preservation and, its implied, to save his father who’s not worth half of him, and gets killed in the process should the empire lose.
If he’s on your team there’s 2 basic paths depending on whether you’re on one of the ‘revolutionary’ routes (VW and CF) or the ‘restore order’ ones (SS and AM) Either he initially follows to pursue his own interests but eventually comes around to Claude’s and/or Edelgard’s ways of thinking, or, you spare him, since he joined the empire ‘cause they looked to be winning he’ll have no qualms jning you when you appear to win, esp once you nap that pesky bridge through which the Imperial troops would’ve marched in, so he has more leeway to do what he actually wants to do, ie oppose the empire and go down in history like he always wanted. He doesn’t change as much but gets plenty of opportunity to show off his more gallant side and redeem himself for the initial turncoatery.
As far as Leonie’s endings go, it’s nice to know that there was someone to take over Jeralt’s mercenary troupe - Byleth probably always thought they would do it but now they’re off being King/Queen/Archbishop/ eating cake with Edelgard
So she needn’t have worried/ eventually was able to take on Jeralt’s legacy like she wanted precisely because she isn’t magic
Of course there’s also the outcome where she dies somewhat ironically  either at Gronder (”Can’t back down because I know you I’m a proper mercenary”) or Myrrdin (particularly ironic since Jeralt didn’t trust Rhea one bit and Solon and Kronya did, not, in fact, report to Edelgard. She was ostensibly trying to get Jeralt on her side post Remire.), in either case to fulfill her dream and become like her mentor she’s pitted against that mentor’s own kid, no option where she can be truly true to her allegiance.... slightly less so in the empire route since she believes she has good cause for revenge here, und understandably so. Edelgard can’t exactly go around yelling “I mean to DOUBLECROSS you!” where the slitherers can hear so she did look guilty.
It is supposed that she died offscreen at Gronder in the church route. :( Better recruit her. And Alois, if you’re doing CF, so poor Byleth doesn’t have to hack through all their remaining quasi-relatives.

Don’t Need Your Love
➳ an nct dream series
Tumblr media
After a horrible first love experience, Yang Ahn joins the Don’t Need Your Love club via invitation. Things don’t turn out the way they were supposed to.
➳ a story of not-so-romance featuring: the coolest club on campus, the meaning of unrequited, teenagers, best friends, heartbreak, healing, first loves, and new ones.
➳ masterlist
➳ note: female oc, multiple pairings, ot7 dream, not saying anything more bc spoilers!
➳ word count: 2235
DNYL. A four-letter word—if you would even call it a word. DNYL: four letters that defined the rest of my youth. Four letters that changed my perspective of quite a few other four-letter words. These four consonants brought together a broken band of romance misfits, the love-lost and the lovelorn, and I was the unfortunate latter.
A scoff dared to spill from my lips when I heard Harvey’s voice crackle over the loudspeaker. It wasn’t abnormal for clubs to advertise themselves via intercom, but those were your usual clubs: basketball, taekwondo, art, math, and such. It started off one of those usual announcements at first, but his next words turned everything around.
“The coolest club on campus: DNYL—”
Such a declarative statement. It stopped me in my tracks on the way to homeroom.
“—Don’t Need Your Love.”
And like the rest of the student body, his audacious proposal of a club nearly made me laugh. Harvey was a sweet exchange student from the United Kingdom. A gregarious boy with a knack for gathering people’s interest. This stunt was no exception. Like the rest of Neo Culture Tech’s teenager-filled population, he droned on about relationships, though he spoke of the broken kind.
Since I had no relation to such types of relationship, I let his voice fade into the background of chattering students and teachers ushering them off to class. At this point, all I paid attention to was the scuff on my Mary Janes as I walked and the way the spine of my notebooks sat uncomfortably against my bicep. My grip on them grew tighter as bits and pieces of Harvey’s speech were growing harder to suppress. Intrusive thoughts crawled its way into my mind. A whisper of an unforgotten forgotten name. Ghosts of conversations in a foreign language. A face began to form in my memory. One with cat-like, sharp eyes. Before my fingertips could come into contact with the cool metal of the doorknob in front of me and snap me out of my thoughts—something else did.
“Do you feel down from all this unrequited love?”
Do you feel down from all this unrequited love? Was that even a question?
I finally let a chuckle past my lips, once again turning my attention towards the scuff mark on my shoe, once again letting the name of first love to be forgotten and remembering that I had a class to attend.
“What’s so funny?”
“Lee Jeno, Jesus Christ,” my shoulders jumped to my ears. “Don’t sneak up on me like that.”
“You looked dumb standing like that,” he gestured to my hand that floated above the doorknob.
“Are you trying to act like Hyuck-oppa by insulting me?”
“Well as your new best friend, I need to fill the void that Haechan left in our Ahn-ah’s heart.”
“You say that like he’s dead.”
“Yeah, dead to you.”
“Only sometimes,” I roll my eyes. “He’ll be back in one more month and I never said anything about you being my new best friend.”
He pouts, like a puppy. “Well haven’t I done a good job of taking care of you while he’s gone? You did post on your insta story about best friend applications being open and I remember sending you a resume that I don’t think you ever read. He’s been gone since like the beginning of last school year—”
Jeno continued to ramble on with loud hand gestures. It was odd to know that this was the boy I was introduced to during freshman year of high school. His features have grown to become more chiseled and—due to his resolution of ‘becoming fit’ over the summer—I couldn’t help but notice the outlines of muscle through his school uniform. Still retaining his puppy-like features, puberty didn’t steal away his cuteness just yet. The Lee Donghyuck he currently was ranting about was my best friend of now four years. I concluded that his one-sided competition for Donghyuck’s role as my best friend was his little way of reminiscing the devilish boy. Although, he’d never admit that he missed him. Neither would I.
Donghyuck was the funniest boy I ever met. He was like the sun at its brightest as it shone through a stormy day. His reactions were exaggerated and animated and he never failed at catching every opportunity for a quick-witted remark against me. But my favorite part about him was when he made jokes with a straight face. Sometimes I couldn’t tell if he was being serious or not. He breathed life into my gloomy 7th-grade self. But I don’t think I could forgive him for not metaphorically holding my hand throughout first year. He had to leave Korea a quarter through the first semester because his parents won a trip to Canada. And I get it. Canada was a great place to be, but he failed to inform me that his trip would last about a year. Before he left, he introduced me to Jeno and told me that we would get along splendidly.
In the words of my best friend; ‘you’d be too much of a loner while I’m gone, so I bestow this pity gift on you.’
Not to mention, our first meeting was hilarious.
He was right. I missed him like the moon missed the sun in the cold night sky.
Luckily, Jeno and I had more in common than I thought and maybe Donghyuck knew that. Maybe that was why he introduced us. He always had an eye for such things.
The first thing I said made him choke on his milk and flush cherry. Let’s just say I recognized him from an old advert he did as a child actor, featuring the said drink he choked on. The Lee Jeno I first got to know was awkward and shy, never without his crescent-crinkled eyes, a bashful smile, and fingers pulling on a hoodie string. The Lee Jeno that stood in front of me was wide-eyed, broad-shouldered, and confident as ever.
He grew up a lot.
Don’t ever tell him this (lest you want his ego to inflate) but I really admired him for that.
“—in conclusion, who was there for that whole fiasco? Not Haechan. What did he ever do? Facetime you every day? Pff I bought you ice cream. Now that’s a real friendship. You didn’t see him flying over from Canada to comfort you, did you? Maybe he was whisked away by a Canadian babe or hunk—”
“You got me my least favorite flavor,” I remarked.
“Ahn-ah,” he whined. “Give me some credit.”
“Tough love. If you wanna be Donghyuck try to be more annoying. He’d never greet me like that.”
“Oh yeah? And how would he have greeted you?” Jeno leaned forward to meet me eye level as if challenging me. Regret flashed in his eyes as I promptly jumped up to put him in a headlock, messing up his perfectly combed hair with my free hand.
“Aw isn’t our Jeno-oppa so grown up?” I pout, pulling and pinching at his cheeks. “Every morning that I see you, you seem to get taller. What am I going to do with you?”
He scrunched his nose in disgust, furrowing his brows. “I think I have cooties now.”
“That’s the spirit. Now keep that up and you’re on your way—maybe—to be just like Hyuckie.”
“The absolute disrespect you’re giving him while he’s gone, calling someone older than you so casually” he scoffs, wrestling his head out of my grasp. “How has he had this much influence on you while he’s gone?”
“Well—”
“Lee. Yang. I don’t suppose you’d want to be late for my class while having a lovers quarrel, don’t you?”
I push Jeno away from me and bowed, flustered. “Sorry, saem.”
“Saem-nim,” Jeno clicked his tongue at my rough gesture, running his fingers through his hair. “I don’t think I could think of her romantically even if I was paid five million won.”
Mr. Song tapped his knuckles against the boy’s head. “Be nice to girls, Jeno. I was joking. I guess you finally found another boy to bully, Ahn?”
“In my defense, sir, the last boy was the one who bullied me.”
“Pfft—”
“I liked you better with the other boy you were friends with, yes. Why don’t I see him with you anymore? You seemed to cause a lot less trouble with—”
Jeno swung the door open. “I think we should get to our seats, Ahn-ah. I’m sorry about the trouble Mr. Song.” His hands clasped around my shoulders and ushered me into the classroom, another scuff to probably form as I tried to not trip over my own feet or drop my books. He shoved me toward my seat.
“Hey—”
“Shh,” he shot an annoying smile at my irritation. “Class is starting.”
“Rude. I think Donghyuck got to you too,” I grumble, sinking my face into the palm of my hand as my notebooks lay in disarray on my desk. It was unfortunate that our homeroom teacher was nice. He let Jeno sit next to me.
“I’ll call attendance now.”
My unfortunate seatmate leaned closer toward me. I inched away, rolling my eyes as he whispered.
“So… does that make me better BFF material?” His eyes disappeared into crescents as he prodded me with is a pencil, chuckling deviously. I slapped his hand away.
“You’re still not as funny as him.”
“What the hell—”
“H-here.”
“Lee, Jeno?” Mr. Song stared at the black-haired boy with a raised eyebrow.
To which he coughed loudly to cover up his expletive.
And aside from Harvey’s little announcement that morning, the rest of the day went on without a hitch. Soon enough, Monday turned into Tuesday, which morphed into Wednesday and bumped into Thursday. All the “day”s seemed the same. Monotonous. The only thing that was different was the slowly shifting breeze and the changing colors of the leaves of plants and trees. The autumn scenery was finally settling in.
And you know what they say about autumn.
It was a fitting season for the boy in front of me. A season of endings and changes—amongst all the other autumn things.
“Why are you tearing them down?” I caught a piece of paper that fluttered down the stairway. It had been a while since I spoke English, the language strange on my tongue. “They’re cute.”
Harvey turned around and flashed a tight-lipped smile. He shook his head with a disappointed exhale. “Quite frankly, the whole thing was a bust.” His hand reached for another DNYL poster, one of many that scattered the walls of this place.
I picked up some rogue posters that fell onto the steps, approaching the foreign boy. I wasn’t lying about the posters being cute. They were handmade and created with color and illustration, the words written in an aesthetic way. Though, I didn’t mind to read them.
“Why’d you make the club in the first place?”
“I guess I’ve just seen those people around campus who’ve just been so unhappy,” he said. “It felt horrible knowing that there was nothing I could do to help but I thought to myself that maybe, just maybe, if I created a safe haven away from that heartbreak, then nobody would feel lonely enough to cry their heart out. Have you ever had the feeling of wanting to start something beautiful?” Harvey’s eyes were green and genuine. The golden light from the window was filtered through leaves, creating a taste of a nostalgic, bittersweet what-if.
“Once,” I answered, a feeling pulling at my chest. An urge. A remembrance of what was and what could have been. There was a wish for warmth, even soaked in the honey glow of the sun. Longing. For new beginnings.
Who hasn’t felt the wish for something to ignite?
For something to explode.
For undreamt dreams to just come true.
“I guess I also wanted to leave a small legacy before I leave. I need to go back home pretty soon.” A solemn sigh left Harvey once again as he stared down at one of his white posters. A pitiful silence hung in the air, dust fairies dancing and floating around us, falling and disappearing away from the light.
“Maybe you just need to find your targeted audience,” the words didn’t mean to come out of my lips, but they did anyway. “NCT is a highschool where teenage romance never sleeps. You’d be best off finding some outliers—y’know like the people you mentioned.”
“The ones I’ve seen around campus?”
“Yeah. Those who have been dumped, had a bad breakup, dealing with a broken heart… isn’t that what you said this club was for?”
“I wouldn’t suppose you’re one of those outliers?” He called out.
I looked behind at Harvey and the colorful papers that stuck out from his arms and his backpack. I looked at the empty walls and the tape that he wasn’t able to scrape off and half torn stickers that spelled ‘DN’. I look at him and smile without meaning to.
“If this is truly the coolest club on campus, then send a message my way.
“I don't have your number.”
“Who said you needed to text me to communicate? Send me something interesting—something special. I wanna feel like I’m being invited to the Phantom’s masquerade,” I turned away, biting at the inside of my cheek. My next words came at a frightening decrescendo as I realized what I was getting myself into. “If you find that I’m suited for your club…surprise me.

Please can you tell me who all the main Sailor Moon characters are and your thoughts on them? I know nothing! :(
You’ve come to the right place then Anon! I’ve been a SM fan for over 20 years, so sure! I can tell you about them! I’ll try not to spoil too much though since you don’t know about them though.
Tumblr media
First we have Sailor Moon herself, Usagi Tsukino. She’s a 14 year old girl who eats a lit, is very clumsy, and a major crybaby. Very much not your ideal heroine. But when she encountered Luna, a talking cat, she discovered her identity to be the champion of justice, Sailor Moon. Her duty is to find the other Guardians and the Moon Princess to defeat the Dark Kingdom. She can be very pratty and, again, a crybaby but she has a kind heart and does try despite how scared she is. She matures over the course of the series and soon discovers her true destiny...
Tumblr media
Next we have Ami Mizuno, aka Sailor Mercury. She is a very intelligwnt girl, with a 300 IQ, but also quite meek and shy. She is seen as a freak due to her intellect with Usagi being the first to befriend her out of the kindness of her heart. While arguably the weakest fighter, Ami more than makes up with it with her intelligence, strategic abilities, and her water/ice-based powers.
Tumblr media
Next up, Rei Hino aka Sailor Mars. She is a miko (shrine priestess) who lives with her grandfather and works at his Shinto shrine (Shinto is a Japanese religion). She is seen as rather strange due to being able to have visions, but found her place within the Sailor Senshi. She’s a stubborn, hot-headed girl and the most likely to but heads with Usagi, but is also arguably the most trusted of them. She is protective and very much fiery, hence her powers being fire-based.
Tumblr media
Next we have Makoto Kino, aka Sailor Jupiter, The tallest and strongest of the Senshi, she is a skilled fighter and unnaturally strong. But she’s also boy-crazy, a very talented cook, and enjoys most feminine hobbies. She got kicked out of her old school for fighting and transfered to Usagi’s, where her reputaiton made many afraid of her. Usagi was the first to not not be, even asking why she should be. Makoto is a strong-willed, friendly girl, with the power of thunder/wood, and not someone who you want to mess with.
Tumblr media
And now we come to Minako Aino, aka Sailro Venus, aka Sailor V. Minako was the actual first Senshi to be awakened. She acted as Sailor V and became quite famous as a result, even having her own arcade game. She is an athletic, cheerful girl who dreams of being an idol. Now in the manga and Crystal anime (which follows the manga), Minako is the senshi’s true leader and had a bit of a loner side due to having to work on her own with only her own cat guide, Artemis, there alongside her. Regardless, she’s a determined girl with the power of love on her side! Literally!
Tumblr media
Finally we come to the lead male, Mamoru Chiba aka Tuxedo Mask. While a lot about him isn’t known, he also doesn’t knwo much about who he is. He began to have dreams of the Moon Princess asking him to find the Imperium Silver Crystal, a powerful jewel that can outright bring back the dead. He therefore acts as Tuxedo Mask, investigating and searching for the Crystal. Due to it, he often aids and rescues Sailor Moon when she gets into peril and she ends up falling in love with him. There’s more too it than just a crush though, and as they’ll eventually find out, they are destined to have a Miracle Romance.
I’m leaving a few out since they don’t come around until WAAAY later (Chibi0-Usa, the Outer Senshu), but those are the main characters! Sailor Moon is a great series. It IS a little dated (this was mad ein the 90′s) but it’s stances of feminism and romance still stand strong even today. IDK if I’d recommend the original anime (which is 200 episodes) or the Crystal anime (which follows the manga), but I would recommend finding the manga and checking those out. Either way, I hope that this was good Anon~

Tropes
Adaptation Title Change: PetQuest is inspired by the novel Kingdoms of Light.
Adult Fear: Your neighbor unexpectedly dies, and his pets you were looking after disappear.
Animal Talk: The pets can understand each other just fine even when they’re not in human form.
Bad Boss: Zoulack’s first response to any setback whatsoever is to strangle Dimitri, whether it’s his fault or not.
Baleful Polymorph: In the end, the heroes are captured by Zoulack and turned back into animals. That doesn’t stop them from saving the world, however.
Earlier, Chip, Pippo and Mochi are transformed into Fabergé eggs, but are saved by Rico and Thalia.
Ball of Light Transformation: Freesia first appears as a bright light that looks like a star before taking the form of a beautiful fairy girl.
Balloonacy: Not balloons, but Pippo can be carried through the air supported by a cluster of butterflies.
Big Good: Freesia Starglow, the fairy who turns the pets human.
Fairbeard can be seen as this as well.
Butt-Monkey: Dimitri is always getting abused by the other henchmen, swatted at, strangled by Zoulack, and things tend to fall on his head.
Canine Companion: Rico was this before his master kicked the bucket.
Cardboard Prison: The prison of Nonfooling, which has a switch that opens up an entire wall to allow people to freely walk out.
Chekhov’s Gun: The hardboiled egg.
Deadpan Snarker: Thalia, to an extent. It helps that she’s a cat.
Disney Death: Heroic Sacrifice necessary? No worries. Chopper willingly risks his life — and loses it — to distract Zoulack while the heroes retrieve the Egg; subverted when Rico wishes Chopper Back from the Dead.
Disproportionate Retribution: After Chip is conned out of his of his gold pieces and tries to report the scam, he and his friends are instead arrested and sentenced to a Longer Than Life Sentence. Thank goodness that The Guards Must Be Crazy is in play.
Earn Your Happy Ending: The pets suffer and struggle at every turn before Zoulack is defeated.
Evil Tower of Ominousness: Zoulack makes his lair in a castle that qualifies.
Evil Plan: Zoulack has a good ol’ Take Over the World plot but he needs the Egg of Fate to make it happen.
Five-Man Band:
The Hero: Rico
The Lancer/Team Mom: Thalia
The Smart Guy: Pippo
The Big Guy: Chip
The Chick: Mochi
Sixth Ranger: Chopper
Gotta Catch Them All: The Fabergé eggs that Chip, Pippo and Mochi have been turned into, as well as the Egg of Fate.
The Guards Must Be Crazy: Sheriff Hoppsmann is known for handing down Longer Than Life Sentences, but can’t be bothered to enforce them, since he leaves the prison right afterwards. All he does is take people to jail and lock them in through the entry point. They only stay until they figure out they can just walk out through a door at the bottom.
Happily Ever After
Heaven Above: Word of God says that in Aligia, people pray to the stars, where the Star Fairies live. One of these fairies, Freesia Starglow, descends from her home in the heavens only when Lovegrove prays up to the sky in his petition for his pets to be safe and for Zoulack to meet his downfall (which the warlock does, literally).
Heroic Dog: Rico.
Humanity Ensues: The pets are transformed into human kids and sent on The Quest. Needless to say, with a puppy, a kitten, a rabbit, a canary and a python all turned human, things get a little… odd.
Light Is Not Good: The egg room is brightly lit and filled with beautiful Fabergé eggs. And if you guess wrong, you end up there… forever.
Longer-Than-Life Sentence: Sheriff Hoppsmann sentences offenders to prison terms of millions of years. Subverted in that he’s not good at keeping track of time, and thus assumes that anyone who escapes his town’s Cardboard Prison has already served out his or her sentence. (That, and it’s a Cardboard Prison that can be exited just by walking out the door.)
Lovable Lizard: Mochi is a good-natured snake, who was rescued by Lovegrove and she is friends with Rico and the other pets and never eats any of them.
MacGuffin: The Egg of Fate.
Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Amelie Traum.
Needle in a Stack of Needles: The scene where they have to find the real Egg of Fate — in a large room filled with various Fabergé eggs. The trick is to pick the simplest of the bunch.
Objectshifting: The group are roped into playing a guessing game to find the true Egg of Fate, but losing will result in them being transformed into another egg.
Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The main characters are quite the diverse bunch—a puppy, a kitten, a rabbit, a canary and a green tree python. And they’re all turned into human children.
Scenery Porn: The animation is just beautiful.
Selfless Wish: The pets are very willing to make one. Rather than wish to get their master back like they originally wanted, they wish Chopper back to life.
Spotting the Thread: The egg chamber is absolutely packed with Fabergé eggs, each one varying in appearance. As such, it seems like determining the right one to pick comes down to sheer luck… until Rico and Thalia use their animal instincts. Sure enough, the Egg of Fate is the simplest-looking one in the room.
Take Over the World: Zoulack’s goal.
The Quest: Played straight; they even have a parchment map!
Uplifted Animal: Done somewhat, in that the pets are given the ability to switch between their human and animal forms in the end.
Villainous Breakdown: Zoulack goes through this in the climax.
Wicked Witch: The pets compare Amelie to one. Subverted in that she’s not at all wicked. Gruff, yes, but also good-hearted.

Boss Reviews: Voltron Legendary Defender
Under cut because of length and the fact that there are people who would rather not see this due to personal reasons. Also for spoilers.
Overall rating and if I recommend this to others for those who don’t want to read this: 7.5/10 and I do recommend this show to those who like Mechas, Space, and series that are more character driven than story. (The last point may change depending on season 3)
Ok, so I just finished watching both seasons and I rather enjoyed it. The story itself is more character driven, and I did enjoy a majority of the characters. The plot was a lot like your standard mecha animes (People piloting giant robots and battling against some evil tyrants who want to take over)
The plot itself was kind of weak, but the characters definitely helped make it more enjoyable. I just hope season 3 will allow us to delve more into the plot without sacrificing characterization.
As for the characters, I will go over each one individually. (Talking main non-villains)
Pidge- The one who pilots the green lion/mech, she’s this major tech geek who just wants to find her dad and older brother who were taken by the evil baddies. Probably my number one favorite character because she is this sarcastic girl who has no time for the others’ bullshit. Plus this girl is a fucking genius and will let nothing get in her way. Being banned from a facility that her dad and brother worked at? Fucking create a new identity just to get in to find out what happened to her family. Stranded in a place full of debris in space? Why not build a fucking satellite to locate her friends. She’s really resourceful and I can just go on and on about her.
Hunk- This lovable goof who pilots the yellow lion/mech is someone that I really felt bad for. He’s great for cooking and moral support, but it took him a while to get used to flying. (The poor boy puked in a simulator and then in the blue lion) Honestly, from what I’ve seen of the fandom there isn’t as much love for this guy (everyone focuses on Kl//ance) and I wish I knew why. (Probably because he isn’t one of the conventionally attractive skinny guys on the team)
Shiro- The leader of the group and the pilot of the black lion/mech. He’s another one that I feel really bad for, namely because he was on a mission in space with Pidge’s dad and bro and he gets abducted by the bad guys. Year later he crash lands on Earth and now has a robot arm but could not remember the exact details of his escape. He is pretty serious compared to the others and is pretty much the big brother of the group, but he does have his moments of silliness. He knows how to have fun when it’s appropriate and that’s a good balance for him.
Keith- The wannabe loner who pilots the red lion/mech. I’ll be honest, at first he just seemed like one of those reckless hotshots that get on my nerves. Though it’s his interactions with the rest of the group (minus one) that helped him grow on me. I also kind of felt bad for him in season 2 because he learned some details of his family heritage that connects him further with the bad guys. (He’s part alien yo!)
Lance- The pilot of the blue lion/mech. He’s pretty much season 1 Sokka, but you amplify the annoying and flirting. He’s honestly my least favorite character at the moment, but if he gets more development then I may learn to like him. But for now, no I don’t like him. He’s the true hotshot of the group.
Allura- This poor child, she’s a princess of an almost extinct alien race who helps fly the large ship. Her hatred of the baddies is very much justified, so I do not blame her for distrusting Keith when his heritage gets revealed along with The Blade of Marmora (People who are part of the baddy’s kingdom, but they rebel against the baddies yo!). She gives off such motherly vibes and is practically the mom friend of the team. Also her interactions with the mice are fucking adorable, and I actually almost cried when she had to get rid of her father’s memories, thus permanently removing his “ghost” from existence forever.
Coran- This goofball is such a sweet cinnamon roll who needs to be protected. He’s this lovable guy who acts as a surrogate father for Allura, as her dad is now dead. He also helps provide some good comic relief.
You can feel free to ask what I ship on this show, but know they are not the most popular ones.
Overall I liked this series, but there are some things that I do not like and hope will get fixed in season 3.
Those things being: Lance and more plot development.
So I would probably rate it on a scale of 1-10 a good 8/10 rounded up from 7.5
