Fandom: Peaky Blinders
Summary: For a moment, just a second, it looks like the man’s eyes are black, even under the warm golden light from the ceilings, but when Tommy looks back up after glancing at the bottle of whiskey held in a surprisingly delicate looking hand, the eyes he sees looking back at him are brown. Dark, but nowhere near dark enough to be considered black by any stretch of the imagination. The man, who’s name Tommy realises he doesn’t know, doesn’t show any sort of expression on his face, but he still gets the impression he’s being laughed at somehow.

The conversation about just what Tommy’s father had gambled away to Tobias all those years ago goes over about as well as Tobias expected, which is not at all.
“Get out.”
“Tommy-“
“Get the fuck out!”
Tobias is many things. A liar, a thief. He was a monster that preyed on easy targets and took their loved ones to play with as he chose for nothing other than the enjoyment he got by watching them realise what they’d done. He is fair and always holds up his end of any deals he makes, no matter how difficult the task or how high the price. He was also a coward, so he does as he’s told and leaves, not daring to take a look back as he does. He can’t bring himself to discover what he might find if he does.
The streets are mostly empty this time of night, but not so empty that Tobias has any difficulty finding a lone figure wandering through the alleys on their way home, and it’s laughably easy to wrap a hand over the unfortunate man’s mouth to silence any noises the man might make before he drinks, leaving just enough that the man will wake up in the morning, if a little pained and inexplicably exhausted.
“Tobias! I didn’t know you were back in town.”
It takes everything in him to suppress the sigh that wants to escape.
“Did everyone I know coordinate behind my back to show up at irregular intervals to tell me everything I’ve been doing wrong, or am I just spectacularly unlucky this year?”
“It’s nice to see you too,” Ada says, in a way that makes it clear that, in Tobias’ current state, it most definitely isn’t nice. She looks a little wild in the eyes, like she’s been doing something she shouldn’t have and Tobias has just caught her, but that fades when she looks at him like she knows what he was just doing, to the man passed out hidden in the shadows in the alley behind them. Maybe she does. There’s a strange sort of comfort in knowing neither of them can say anything without incriminating themselves.
“Is it? I wish I could say the same.”
Despite the clear frustration in his voice, Tobias accepts the hug without protesting, and he’ll deny it to the end of his days if anyone asked, but it does make him feel slightly less homicidal. It’s his own fault he’s in this situation, he knows that, there’s no one to blame here but himself. It doesn’t make any of it less frustrating.
“Don’t be such a shit. We’ve got company. Freddie, this is Tobias, he’s a friend of Tommy’s,” she shares a look with Freddie, and Tobias pretends he doesn’t see it, “Tobias, this is Freddie, my-“
“Friend?”
“Exactly.”
Freddie doesn’t remember him, there’s no recognition in his eyes when he shakes Tobias’ hand, but Tobias recognises him. Although, he looks quite a bit different out of his army uniform, without mud covering almost every inch of him.
“Maybe next time we can meet somewhere better than a dark street at 2am,” Tobias says, sliding a smile into place on his face easily, shoving anything to do with Tommy Shelby down until he can deal with it later, “Which I’m sure you don’t want your brothers to find out about.”
“Ada-“
Tobias waves a hand as he steps around them, a little further away from the alley, “Of course, that would be hard for them to find out, considering I never saw either of you tonight. So I guess it’s been nice not meeting you.”
He stands on the corner and watches them leave, arm in arm, talking between themselves, and doesn’t move until long after the darkness has swallowed them up as if they’d never even been there. Bringing a hand out of his pocket, he looks down at the blood on the small knife, still fresh enough that it hasn’t dried yet, and runs the blade along his tongue. Freddie will find the small cut tomorrow, on the back of his arm, not deep enough to be noticed but enough that a few drops of dried blood stick his sleeve to his skin.

“I’m looking for Tommy Shelby, I was told he would be here,” John hears someone say, a woman based on the slightly higher pitch, and it’s enough of a distraction to pull his attention away from the ledgers spread across the table in front of him. It’s just out of the ordinary enough that everyone in the room seems to pick up on it, some more subtle than others about listening in.
“He’s not in,” Arthur says, stepping closer to the door with what might’ve passed for a friendly smile on his face, if it hadn’t faltered when the woman turned her dark eyes on him. It’s a lie anyway, Tommy has barely left the small office since whatever argument he had with Tobias two weeks before, and the smile the woman gives Arthur declares that she sees right through the fabrication. “If you leave your name, I’ll be sure to-“
Every head turns towards the sound of Tommy’s office door opening, and John winces internally at how his brother looks when he steps half out of the room. Through the half open door, John can see the office is still a mess, papers scattered across the floor, but the desk is strangely empty, save for the wooden box that sits in the centre, gleaming in the light.
“Let her in, Arthur,” Tommy says, sounding like he hasn’t slept more than a few hours in the last week, which might likely be the case, “and go home, all of you.”
Arthur averts his eyes when the woman glances at him, clear amusement on her face at him being caught out in his lie, and takes several steps back to let her pass. More than needed, John thinks, but then again he does drop his own eyes back to the books as she passes. She walks like how he imagines a warrior queen would, head held high and proud, at least from what he notices out of the corner of his eye.
It isn’t until much later that he realises just what about her had been so unsettling that he felt he had to look away. Nothing that wasn’t a monster wearing a human skin had eyes that black.

#read a post that upset but I managed to calm myself down and not be triggered#then saw a second post that caught me off guard but still managed to stay calm but now bad thoughts are amuck#saw a third and fourth post in quick succession with triggers in them#(I need to check my filters or stop using mobile bc I can’t use xkit)#I’m just gonna get off the internet and like do Duolingo or something#but it feels like my brain is floating in bad feeling soup#and like yeah! i managed to calm myself down and ground and not grt triggered or have a flashback or get drowned in awful thoughts#and that’s progress and a lot of work and my therapist would be proud!#but I’m still like 10x more exhausted than I was counting on tonight#and even if I’m not spiraling I’m still THINKING about things I don’t want to have to think about right now#but that’s the sort of thing that doesn’t go away really.#there are some topics I’ll always be stupidly sensitive to that will ruin my day upon encountering them#and these are not safe topics to be sensitive about because people love to take advantage of that sensitivity#and my ESA is over an hour away because my school makes it intentionally difficult to get approval#if anyone is reading my rant (bless you 💕) and knows how to filter words on mobile please let me know how#of course that doesn’t always help because there’s a lot of slang and allusions and images#and feel literally sick to my stomach having to ask people to tag my triggers#(I’ve had some bad experiences with asking people to accommodate my triggers recently)#and I hate doing it in the first place#i hate being in America. my PTSD has been making up for lost time since I got back from Wales.#ah whoop there it goes flashback time 🤪#(I’ll be okay I am fine I just was upset and wanted to rant but that made me more upset :/)#((gonna go suck on a jolly rancher watch Old Enough))

Anyway I’m going to a fiber festival tomorrow! TBH I really don’t need new yarn, I already have a huge backlog to work through, but I had wanted to go last year but I got Covid instead, and I don’t want to wait a whole ‘nother year. I’m hoping I’m able to hack the walking, I’m two weeks out from fucking up my back and I’m doing a lot better but I still get all seized up from standing too long. I made it all the way through my shower yesterday without too much pain, it wasn’t until I was almost done with the post-shower lotioning that I hit must lie down NOW territory. And I went to the grocery store this evening! It went okay but having a cart helps 😂. Might not be a bad idea to stop and buy a cane on the way.

Why do I have a dentist appointment tomorrow man. Why is this something I have to do
#i mean i’m going obviously but fuuuuck#my dentist is so nice. that isn’t the problem. but last time i overshared to him so badly#that was nine months ago so maybe he doesn’t remember?? i can only fucking hope#my problem is that this time (only my second time seeing him) i am going to have to limp in there with a cane and he’s going to be like uhhh#what the hell happened in these nine months??#i’ll be like.. you know how last time you saw me i was unemployed but fully mobile?#well now i’m employed but i have a busted knee#the two are not completely unrelated but also there isn’t a ton of correlation there#regardless; please tell me if my wisdom teeth have decided to stop causing a ruckus or if i need them out#they haven’t been paining me since they first said ‘hi how are ya’ back in february but i Know they’re still there#because nobody removed them lol#i just hope it’s less chaotic than the last time i went in. well.. not the last time but the time before that#remember when i had to call them last minute to cancel because i accidentally double booked myself#so i ended up going in like an hour after i’d had a job interview that went really badly#and i was also taking care of my friend’s dog at the time because my friend was visiting her sister in law in hospice#i was so stressed i ended up leaving my wallet at home and then panicking because my dentist is private because who the hell can get in#to see an nhs dentist in this economy. i ended up having to beg for their wifi password so i could set up contactless payments#through my phone. thankfully i’m really good at memorising numbers & have my debit card number and info fully memorised#i also know my phone number; my grandparents’ landline; my library card number and both of my favourite takeaway food numbers#no other numbers though. priorities#i know how my mom’s number starts but not how it ends lol#anyway. pray for me to not have to get another dentistry procedure because i genuinely don’t think i can handle it#personal

First slide: Mariota’s Guide to 14th Century (Medieval) Women’s Clothing

ALRIGHT LISTEN UP MOTHERS AND FUCKERS. I’m bored, so today we’re going to be talking about medieval clothing. Specifically fourteenth century English clothing because that’s what I’m good at. (Source: trust me bro I’m a reenacter). Also this is all female stuff - sorry masc leaning folks, I’ll get to you someday!

So, corsets, stays, and shapewear in general kind of wasn’t a thing yet. So your underwear was a shift, which was awesome because it was also your pajamas. They were usually made of linen, though some might have been made of cotton is you were rich.

There is evidence for supportive shifts for busy support, like this one from the fourteenth century!

There’s also this bra like fragment found in Austria, but that is a whole debate so.

Then, over the shift, yet under your main dress went your pockets, which tied on at the waist. Your dresses had slits do that you could get at your stuff without flashing everyone lol.

Third slide: your dress, or the cotehardie. (Pronounced coat hardy)
Over the shift you put your dress, sometimes referred to as either a kirtle or cotehardie. 14th century people started actually form-fitting their clothes more than previous centuries. These needed fastenings, which were mostly lacings (spiral lacings specifically), or buttons made of either metal or cloth, used at the front of the dress from neckline to waist, and on the sleeves from elbow to wrist, with exceptions of course.
(Sidenote: fuck sleeves, all my homies hate sleeves)

Dresses seemed to be mostly wool, though I often use linen for mine because I live in Australia and it’s hot in summer and I don’t want to die. Most often they weren’t lined (that is what the underwear was for).

The neckline of these dresses was usually round or an oval shape, and some manuscripts have it so wide that it falls off the shoulders slightly.

Clothing was a lot more colourful than the movies would have us believe lol.

Fourth slide: Dress two; electric boogaloo

You could also wear an overdress, which was usually of a contrasting colour and had shorter sleeves.
As well as fashion, they would have been used for extra warmth, and so were usually made of wool.

Common people would have only owned a couple of different outfits, as fabric was super expensive.

A common late thirteenth to mid fourteenth century overdress was the ladies surcoat, which had big holes instead of sleeves.
Belts would have been worn underneath the surcoat.

Fifth slide: Hair and headwear
Hair was worn braided and pinned up, with a coif (cap) and either a wimple or veil, or both. The wimple and/or veil were usually pinned to the coif, or secured on a band of fabric around the head.
Veils would be either oval, or a D shape. Wimples were rectangular. A wimple goes under the chin and a veil goes over your head.

All the headwear would be made of linen, thin wool, or silk, depending on class. The veils could also be made really fancy by ruffling the front edge or by attaching pearls.

I ride the bus in my medieval gear a lot because of events, and way too many people think I’m Amish because of my veil. It’s honestly just funny at this point. I should keep a tally.

Fake braids were a thing! Blonde hair in particular was very fashionable, and bleaching or fake braids were sometimes used to achieve that.

Sixth slide: Cloaks and hoods
These would have actually been two seperate garments! Integrated hoods on cloaks didn’t actually become a thing until the … seventeenth century or so? (Citation needed).
Cloaks were a lot simpler than the typical cloak we think of nowadays. Often they were just a rectangle of wool, or by the fourteenth century, sometimes a half circle.
They were almost always wool as far as I know, and were generally fastened by a cloak pin or buttons.

Women’s hoods could be short and open, or with a longer skirt and closed with buttons. Liripipe (pronounced leery-pipe) hoods were named for the tube of fabric that dangled off the back of your hood, varying in length. As well as a fashion statement, it could also be wrapped around the neck like a scarf if it got cold.
Hoods were nearly always wool I’m pretty sure, though they were often lined with linen, silk, or cotton.
[General description: a short liripipe hood would be open, with the bottom only reaching your shoulders. They were made from a single piece of fabric that would wrap over your head, with the seam down the centre back of your head. It was flared at the bottom by inserting triangular gores. At the front edge near your face there would be a strip jutting out that went from one side of your chin, over your head, and down to the other side. This would usually be folded back, revealing the lining colour. The bottom of the hood could either just reach the base of your neck, or reach down to just past your shoulders. The former would usually be open at the front, with fastenings optional. The latter option with the longer skirt was almost always able to be fastened up the front with fabric buttons. The liripipe itself was a thin flat tube of fabric fastened at the centre top back of the hood. End ID]
Fun fact, 90% of why I decided to reenact the fourteenth century specifically was because of liripipe hoods.
Seventh slide: Feet (not in a weird way)
Hose were used to keep your legs warm. For women they were usually knee height, and fastened just underneath it with a garter or tie.

Hose usually would have been made from wool, and were cut on the diagonal (bias) of the fabric to get the maximum stretch possible from the fabric. They still were looser than modern tights are though!
Knitted socks were also a thing I’m pretty sure, but I don’t know enough about them. Sorry!
Shoes were simple, usually referred to as turnshoes because of how they were made. Fun fact: the lack of foot support means that turnshoes are similar to going barefoot in terms of how you walk. Some reenactors love it, some hate it, and some are indifferent lol.

Because shoes were really hard to waterproof, (ask me how I know), and didn’t have solid soles, wooden pattens (pronounced pat-tens) were worn to keep you off the ground while outside.

Eighth slide: Accessories
These are a few other items that might have made up a working woman’s outfit.
Aprons would definitely have been used while working. One were just a large rectangle of cloth tucked into the belt, some were smocked to draw in the fabric. They generally stopped at the waist.

Pretty broaches and other jewellery existed! There was cheaper stuff made of pewter for the lower classes.

They had a funny sense of humour as well… and they weren’t all prudes.

Eating knives were worn on the belt, though it is debated whether women would have carried one. I do because I’m a modern fourteenth century woman.

Belts are a curiously debated topic. Some people reckon that women would have definitely worn them, others say they they weren’t used by women much at all. As far as I know there are depictions of both, so choose what you’d prefer. They are great for hanging stuff on I gotta say.

Pretty little purses would have probably been worn. I don’t know enough about them to say anything else though.

Ninth slide: Fancy Shmancy
There is a lot I haven’t covered, especially in the realm of the upper classes. Here is some of what has been missed. (Buckle up because this section is very image heavy. I will be as concise as possible).
Heraldic dresses! If you are interested, go check out Morgan Donners video on YouTube.

Fancy headpieces for rich bitches only.

Fancy dagged edged on hoods, sleeves, dresses, etc.

Brocade gowns! So pretty!

Fancy sleeves!

Dresses that were two different colours.

Dis you notice all the “usually” “commonly” and “often’s” in there? That’s because I cannot possibly illustrate everything that we know of the time in only ten slides, nor do I know everything, so I have just tried to show what seems to be the most depicted.
