How ridiculous, he thought as the girl stepped back. Elyon had nowhere to go but the solid wall; did she believe herself capable of dissolving to mist, escaping through the very cracks?

Of course Dottore knew that was not the case. It was a reaction most disgustingly--and amusingly--human, to stay away from that which hurt them even when their chances were less than hopeless. She recovered surprisingly quick from the drugs that he tested on her--and the more she proved that, at the very least, the more he saw the utility in her as a subject.

So many of his experiments ended in death all because he misjudged the tolerance of the subject, or because the substance itself was far too toxic in their systems.

"I have been exceptionally patiently, do you realize that, girl?" With a wave of his fingers, he summoned a polearm. Hovering in the air, its point aimed directly at the center of her collarbone. "Of course, I do believe that humans are well capable of making better choices, don't you?"

The labs were a labyrinth themselves. Without help or luck, little escapees had no chance of making it out; Dottore was certain of that.

"Now, will you make the better choice? Or must I remind you of the consequences for your acting uncooperative?" he asked. "I do not run a daycare here."

   “  Do  you  need  something  ?  “  Fenrir  rumbled  softly  as  she  climbed  onto  the  couch  while  also  clinging  onto  his  hand.  He  could  have  just  lifted  her  up  ,  but  she’d  had  that  determined  look  to  her  eyes  as  she  settled  beside  him.  It  didn’t  seem  like  it.  She  seemed  quite  content  to  simply  latch  onto  his  hand  and  stay  right  beside  him.

   He  exhaled  with  a  slight  chuckle.  Fenrir  didn’t  know  exactly  what  he  was  doing.  Normally  he  just  helped  the  kids  he  found  get  back  to  family  if  they  were  lost  or  to  an  orphanage.  She  was  an  exception.  But  it  seemed  somewhere  deep  down  there  were  still  instincts  that  drove  him  to  check  on  her  and  learn.  The  happy  sounds  she  made  ,  the  sad  sounds  ,  the  frustrated  ones.  It  was  .  . .   rewarding.  (  Had  his  own  mother  shared  such  thoughts  dealing  with  him  and  Hel  and  Jormungandr  ,  despite  how  different  they  all  were  ?  Wolf  ,  snake  ,  half-skeleton.  )

   He  lifted  his  other  hand  to  playfully  ruffle  her  hair  ,  serious  expression  cracking  into  a  laugh  at  the  face  she  made  at  him.  But  he  relented  to  let  her  hold  onto  is  left  hand  as  long  as  she  wanted.  He  was  in  no  rush  today.

   Kindness  is  foreign  to  one  so  forsaken  as  him.  It  is  not  often  that  Fenrir  ends  up  saving  pups  abandoned  to  wilderness  or  cruelty.  When  he  does  ,  they  do  not  linger  long.  Back  to  a  family  they’d  wandered  away  from  if  it  was  wilderness  ,  or  to  other  relatives  or  anxious  parents  if  it’s  cruelty  by  another.  He  does  not  ask  for  thanks.  He  does  not  consider  that  thanks  should  be  something  he  receives.  He  wouldn’t  know  what  to  do  with  it  if  someone  gave  it  to  him.  (  And  it  had  ,  a  handful  of  times.  Often  in  winter  when  even  the  dogs  of  Midgard  could  no  longer  follow  a  scent  but  he  could.  He  had  simply  stared  and  nodded  when  others  thanked  him.  )

   So  to  see  the  little  wendigo  wrapped  around  his  leg  is  a  strange  and  unfamiliar  sight.  The  gods  themselves  cowered  in  fear  of  him  -  but  he  knows  all  too  well  childhood  naivety  means  that  which  should  be  feared  is  often  not.  Yet  unconsciously  ,  a  faint  smile  cracks  stoic  features  as  he  watches  her  cling  ,  the  delight  that  appears  when  he  moves  his  leg  with  ease  and  she  moves  with it.  For  him  ,  her  weight  was  no  more  than  a  speck  of  dust.  But  it  seemed  she  was  delighted  to  hold  on  and  to  hug  him.

   It’s  a  warm  feeling  in  his  chest  as  Fenrir  reaches  a  hand  down  to  rest  against  her  head.  It  brings  back  memories  he’d  feared  forgotten.  Memories  of  his  mother  hugging  him  and  petting  his  fur  ,  or  nights  curled  up  with  his  siblings.  When  warmth  from  another  was  familiar  and  he  didn’t  recoil  at  the  touch  of  another.  Of  a  time  without  scars  ,  when  the  world  still  seemed  wonderful.

   “  Are  you  planning  to  cling  there  the  whole  time  ?  “  He  asks  ,  head  tilted  with  amusement.  In  a  minute  perhaps  he’ll  pick  her  up  and  hear  if  she  squeals.  For  now  ,  he’s  amused  to  simply  let  her  latch  on  and  hug  his  leg  with  a  strength  that  would  likely  crush  anyone  else  but  hardly  bothered  the  ancient  wolf.
