They got lost in the cave system below Sageclan for a while (and by a while I mean by the time they came back Newtpuddle had actually passed his warrior assessment). Miststar knew they would return unharmed + with a mental map of the caves (where the battle cats AU equivalent of the old_data is) but definitely didn't anticipate them being gone for several months.

I don't know when that occurred though... probably on the tail end of their apprenticeship, though Miststar wasn't their mentor so he wasn't the one to ask them to go down there (he didn't stop them from going though despite Knowing what was going to happen and having every opportunity to intervene. So still a conscious decision on his part).

They've always looked like that though if that's what you meant.
