Escapril prompt: ____ as medicine
This is inspired in part by a song called Forever Rain by RM. I find this song particularly healing and was reminded of it as I considered this prompt on a rainy day.

There was a curtain of fog
and when I held onto it
and parted it with all my strength,
I wasn't sure I wanted to see what lived on the other side
But let me try again
to grasp the life I've been given
Let me try again
This time knowing the strength of my hands

I keep wanting to write of unshakeable hope
But there is none
Only the everyday, battered hope
that ebbs and flows like the sea
I feel inadequate with this kind of hope in my heart
But it's the bruised and timid
The common and real and brave
And it's enough

I bake bread for the marmalade. And I eat it with my soul. I think about my great grandmothers often. I don't speak to my neighbours but I smile when I hear them laughing together in the evenings. I like flowers. I smell like flowers. I paint flowers. I cry when I smudge the petals. I enjoy being good at things. I don't like to practice. I fall in and out of love with several particular interests a year. I never seem to settle. Afternoons haunt me but I get through them. Sometimes, I don't think I will. But I always do.
Please be gentle with me

Yesterday,
I saw two butterfly lovers
fluttering above a clover meadow
For a moment I thought it was a dream
Can real life be so soft?
Yes, it can be

For national poetry month, I will be posting snippets from my 2020/2021 poetry notes. I've been writing consistently throughout the past year but I haven't shared many pieces because being vulnerable has been difficult for me. But it's spring and the world is waking up and that makes me feel a little braver. Thank you so much for reading my work. I hope you enjoy!

Yesterday, the birds sang in the morning
and rain fell upon the bare boned trees
winter grew my gratitude
for the thaw
for the buds and the blossoms
and the rushing river
the unruly spring wind
the colour green
the mild air
the resurrection
By the hands of many miracles
we live again

“There are two paths you can take, Enola. Yours, or the path others choose for you."
My interpretation of one of the flower cards featured in Enola Holmes.
At times it's hard to believe that we have any control over our future. But it's good to remember that we are more powerful than we think.
In typical Holmes fashion, there's a secret message hidden somewhere in the photo. Can you see it?
