Nimona is refreshing to a level that I didn't realize I craved. It's just so unapologetically, obviously, and meant to be queer. I feel like so much lgbtq representation in media has been quiet and subtle. Like the only way we'll see queer characters in the mainstream is if we literally hunt for them, and then we're expected to just be satisfied when maybe this random character might be a little gay.
With Nimona, it's like right in front of your face, just in its entirety, and it's so so beautiful. We get to see Nimona as a full being complete with emotions and flaws and multitudes that includes queerness and gender nonconformity. It's just the realness, the tangibility of the whole movie that makes me so happy. I don't want to be satisfied with undertones and speculation. I want all the queerness out in the open for everyone to celebrate. Nimona gave me that, and I want more.

Somehow stretching witcher volume 1 into 3 days was a feat of patience and restraint I had never expected from myself.
That being said, I feel well-fed this season. The first episode itself was enough to sustain me with a lifetime of happy family feels. I mean it was obvious it was going to be ruined, but it was quite nice while it lasted.
Tumblr media
Ciri's witchering was phenomenal. I really love how she's found a home with Geralt who has given her a way to be strong without her magic.
Tumblr media
Ciri and Yennefer's relationship was the highlight of this season. Yennefer finally becomes a mother, and Ciri gets a family. Also, I love to see Ciri realizing her power and growing up. The whole scene when she exposes the guy trapping the wyvern was amazing. Her sense of justice will keep getting her in trouble, but she doesn't care. I kinda hate what Aretuza will do to her. But also, who is this, and why are they so interesting?😳
Tumblr media
Geralt and Yennefer. They are everything.
Tumblr media
I'm still processing, but have very much entered the agonizing wait for volume 2.

Can we talk about Devi's development
This season's storyline was so well crafted for so many reasons.
Devi getting over Paxton. Their relationship wasn't working because Devi had so much self-hatred rooted in how others saw her and her culture. It made so much sense for them to break up because the whole relationship was built on Devi's idolization of Paxton and how she felt unworthy. By the end of the season, she is able to have a healthy friendship with him, and Paxton also gets to feel like more than just some object of lust. She's also able to actually choose to be with Ben.
Devi's relationship with Des. This was like the beginning of her loving herself. Since she saw a reflection of herself (i.e. her culture, values, and goals), in Des (the smart, nerdy kid) who she also saw as attractive and cool, she was able to love herself more. Devi has only seen herself and other brown kids as her as uncool. Des is the kind of real-life representation she needed to break out of that self-hatred. (The reason why representation in media is so important.) Also, it was pretty obvious that Mindy Kaling was having a moment pairing Devi with a brown guy. But the end of their relationship was kind of realistic. Speaking from experience, brown guys live for their mothers.
Overcoming her trauma. With all of Devi's growth, she's able to focus on more important things and can handle her feelings better. She was able to overcome some of her grief at the concert because she has support. Her relationship with her mother has been strengthened so much this season which is such a thing for brown girls. The difference in her relationship with her mother in the first season to now is absolutely beautiful.
There's a million more things I want to say about this season. I love how she's making sensible choices now and is actually a likeable character. There are obviously always places to improve, but, as far as representation I never had goes, this show will always be one of my favorites.

A bit of a monologue inspired by Hamlet and Horatio
These casual slaughters sow thorns in my heart like seeds that,
When reaped, leave gashes like envenomed sword slashes.
Even in death, this bond between souls crosses the widening gap between us.
Orestes, I remain your faithful Pylades.
Our fatal mistakes fall like immovable stoppers on your lifeline,
But the words from your lips are sealed unto mine,
And I fall under oath to recount the tales of your trials.

Girl, on display
She pinks her cheeks with rouge borrowed from her mother’s veins.
In her hair, she ties ribbons of sinew and tendon sown from eager body’s
Bated breath in hopes of being plucked from the writhing masses.
She dresses her fingernails with the shine of misplaced tears too easily shed.
They remind her of the glimmer of her eyes when she was told to live great
Dreams in intangible clouds and of scorching stars close enough to touch.
Though disabused of her daydreams, she continues the reaping of her meager rewards,
And when she’s satisfied, she lays herself carefully alongside her kin on the cold, hard ground.
Above her the vultures circle, scrutinous eyes and practiced beak and hungry belly.
A ruthless flaying and displaying of ragged lungs and heart kicking and screaming
A humble offering to rapacious buzzards who screech we don’t want you
Even as they take and take and take
And when they’re gone, throbbing hearts seized by greedy maws,
They leave a gaping wound, and
She isn’t sure if it was worth the pain.

Jayce: So oxygen went on a date with potassium, it went... OK.
Vi: I thought oxygen was dating magnesium, OMG.
Viktor: Actually oxygen first asked nitrogen out, but nitrogen was all like NO.
Heimerdinger: I thought oxygen had that double bond with the hydrogen twins.
Vi: Looks like someone's a HO.
Ezreal: NaBrO.
Caitlyn: I'm done with all of you!

Ace of Spades is just... amazing
Tumblr media
Ok, I'm gonna go on a book rant now cuz I'm fresh off reading it, but there may be some very vague spoilers sprinkled throughout so proceed with caution.
Lately, everyone has been talking about a couple new books, Ace of Spades being one of them. So I got it, not in a million years expecting what I would read.
FIRST, if you know anything about it, you know that it's about a rich private school that's been overtaken by a mysterious "Gossip Girl" texter, exposing the secrets of two students to the rest of the student body. Two students who are Black. Now, the book is a mystery thriller so I was not at all expecting the author to tackle issues like institutionalized racism. In fact, while reading it, I was right alongside the characters in this kind of denial that something so horrifying and disgusting could happen... until the truth came out. The way Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé reflects the state of current society in Ace of Spades just completely disillusions anyone, including her characters, from thinking that this couldn't happen NOW. I felt such anger and indignation on the behalf of the characters and more when I realized that it is completely plausible that shit like that can and does happen now.
SECOND, the difference in the socioeconomic statuses of the main characters totally highlights the fact that no matter their position, POC cannot escape the reality that discrimination and racism are inherent in American society because of how deeply ingrained they are in the history and foundation of many powerful institutions. I know there's this myth that achieving means you've overcome whatever discrimination you face. But it's not true. Achieving isn't what makes a person worthy of respect and decency. POC always have to work so much harder to "earn" respect. While the plot of the book may seem exaggerated because we don't see it so blatantly, this targeting of Black people exists on this level and probably even more. This book, at its most basic, is a call to action. A call to open our eyes and not let this shit fly.
THIRD, ummm love the LGBTQ+ representation. Specifically, how the struggle with acceptance and homophobia differed between the two mcs who come from VERY different backgrounds. A lot of trauma and pain is covered and I feel like it's so important to show how dangerous the world still is for queer people.
FINALLY, if you choose to read this, keep a punching pillow nearby. I definitely had to use mine.
