Not my cup of tea
I was thinking of high tea as I worked on my last painting “Eager Beaver” so as I began a new artwork I continued thinking of tea related thoughts and phrases. At the time I was beginning the new painting some dear friends shared that they were taking a road trip to see the plants blooming in the desert. The thoughts of cactus and drought-resistant plants then reminded me of a local restaurant…

Eager beaver
As I mentioned in my last post I’ve been working on a new painting. This one is inspired by that eager excitement I have felt when looking at displays of pastries, cookies and cakes – even if all I actually get at the cafe is the coffee. I love the colors and textures of the towers of baked goodness. So this week I worked on and finished… … a new 8 x 10 gouache and ink painting I’ve titled…

Early bird
I wrote in my last post about having been a night owl and that changing due to necessity. This change of hours inspired me as I worked on a new painting at the kitchen table this week in short bursts until I finished it…. … and titled it “Early Bird”. I feel like this bird looks in the early hours, pajamas fluffy hair and all. “Early Bird” – by Clancy – 8 x 10 – gouache and ink on board This…

Night owl
Since beginning recovery from my ankle injury I’ve become less of a night owl than I used to be. Lately it feels like I have all the stamina of a Christmas cracker so I work in even shorter bursts and retire early most days. Plus physical therapy sometimes starts before 9 am which requires an earlier bedtime because I wish to have at least 10 minutes during breakfast to sketch. (I share my…

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush
Imaginary birds flew in my last post and I knew physical therapy was on my near horizon. So I did my best to think of P/T as an opportunity (see my email newsletter) and I remembered the phrase “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. That phrase inspired the weeks work on this painting…. … which I finished and titled “A Bird In The Hand Is Worth Two In The Bush”. “A Bird In The Hand Is…

Under the rose
Last week I worked at an easel perched on my tummy while I laid on the couch with my hurt ankle elevated. I worked on this painting… ….which I’ve finished and titled “Under The Rose”. I’ve been reading a book by Muriel Barbery (see below) and thinking of various reasons why people feel a need to keep their true selves hidden, as the idiom says, “under the rose”. “Under The Rose” – by Clancy – 8…

Oops-a-daisy
I’ve been working on a new painting as I mentioned in my last post that illustrates an idiom often said when a small child falls – “Oops-a-daisy”. Yes, the idea for this painting was inspired by my falling and hurting my ankle. (See also my recent email newsletter about SOCK questions for how I use life occurrences as inspiration sources) That I slipped on ice during winter when no daisies were…

Ass over teacup
In my last post I was beginning a new 8 x 10 painting at the kitchen table instead of my easel because of my hurt foot. The table looks like this… to the right you see the painting in progress… …which I finished. I’ve titled it “Ass Over Teacup” Yes, my painting was inspired by the common phrase “ass over teacup” and it’s twin “ass over teakettle”. Both phrases refer to falling. I chose the…

Bear it in mind and more studio adjustments
I finished the 5 x 7 painting I was working on in my last post and have titled it “Bear It In Mind: you are enough” Here’s a closer look. The above artwork besides being a framed piece for my upcoming exhibits will also become a greeting card on my Zazzle shop. I did this drawing below for the inside of the card. It seems a good thought to bear in mind. As I wrote in my email newsletter since…

Art studio adjustments take root
Our Fairy Goddaughter asked “How does this fractured ankle issue impact your work for upcoming art exhibit stuff?” Here’s my reply: It’s definitely slowed me down. Since I already do my sketchbook pages at the breakfast table I’m experimenting with also doing work in short bursts in the mornings on the smaller fine art works: 5 x 7 inch size for sure and maybe the 8 x 10. I haven’t tried an 8 x…

The anthologist and the apple cart
So this medical boot on my right foot is new and has affected the movement of my apple cart. I say this dryly and wryly but to quote Kurt Vonnegut “and so it goes”. Here’s a link to my email newsletter with more details about the boot. I’ve named the boot Smithwick. Suffice it to say I’m spending my days reading while laying on the couch with Smithwick elevated on pillows and a strategically…

To bear fruit
In the afternoons I’ve been working on a large 18 x 24 inch sized painting for upcoming exhibitions via the Caplan Art Designs Gallery. Here’s a video of me working… Here’s the finished painting: To Bear Fruit – by Clancy – 18 x 24 inches – acrylic on board I’m playing with common phrases because words and meanings matter. I hope your week is fruitful in ways that satisfy you.

Kitchen art and thinking of places
In 2023 I did a 5 panel painting “In The Rabbit Hole” and the Caplan Art Designs Gallery has recently sold it to a collector who is putting it in a kitchen! Each panel of “In The Rabbit Hole” celebrates food, music, art and the written word. As I created that project I thought about kitchens and how much of our humanity happens there. It’s a place of love, laughter, music, books, art and, of…

The ABC's and Holiday Book Flood month
I’ve been working towards “holidays” since about July, making my ABC’s: Artwork Books and Cards for holiday exhibits at the galleries. Such is the life of an artist. And it’s not just me it’s many artists who do this work-in-summer-for-the-holiday-season type of schedule. Creativity is very like running a marathon. So come December sometimes I have to get creative about what gets me excited…
