this is another endearing quality of OG Japanese Ignis that his dub personality change destroyed; people who played in English often characterize Ignis as being super suave and confident, and he is not like that at all

he's actually very mild mannered and humble, and becomes embarrassed easily

It wasn’t exactly appropriate to snort at someone’s misfortune but, Jezebel’s reaction illicits one. Maybe a taste of bemused payback from how her traps had once so sufficiently gotten him stuck without any sense of freedom before he’d really known who was the master craftswoman of them. Once that fleeting moment is past, however the former Shield begins to assess the environment, flashlight being clipped to his chest to better movement.

For once, he misses the idea of magic. Wishing terribly that the teleportation the Glaives held was in his wheelhouse with how far this crevasse went down with no footholds and even his nearly seven foot stature wasn’t going to do much for him here if he crawled down. If she wasn’t so stuck, he’d toss down a rope but, it didn’t seem that was the answer either. Step one, get her loose. Step two... figure it out.

His footsteps sound to the opposite side she was stuck on, careful that he wouldn’t make matters worse by sliding right down on top of her body. The last thing she needed was more broken bones. And slide down he does, against the dirt, letting his body fall without trying to scramble and disturb any of the dirt and stone, ideally he’d like to be able to carve out some handholds once she’s free.

“Alright. Lemme dig that foot out. Just promise you’re not gonna bite my head off.”

“Do I bloody look good!?” It sounded weird when she said it. Immediate regret. She wasn’t fishing for a compliment, or some witty remark about her appearance though something told her she may well be on the receiving end of it in a moment.

So - she does what she normally would do when it came to people. She glares up at him. One foot wedged awkwardly in a crack in the floor of the crevasse. Her hands chewed up from trying to get to it given the narrowness surrounding her legs and – scratch marks. A clear sign she’d been trying to drag herself up with no success. Perhaps exhaustion played a role in this unfortunate situation she’d managed to get herself into.

“–my foot is very stuck..” Jezebel finally confessed. Albeit begrudgingly. However her goal here was not to be unreasonable, and run him off upon being blinded by that damned flashlight, but to survive. Utilize the opportunity presented.

“It may be broken..” And she was way too far down for him to reach her. The only way he’s helping - if he so chooses, is by dropping down to where she is. Luckily for him, the crevasse appears to widen not far from where she’s trapped. Once he’s down, though, neither is going to be able to climb out.

His brow cocks up into a look of interest, a bemused smile replacing the smirk that had settled on his face just moments before. The drama, as interesting as it was to watch the dynamics between their campmates wasn't nearly as interesting as any book he kept on his person, at least in his humbled opinion.

"That depends. You dog-ear pages? Or crack spines?" The most absolutely criminal acts that he wouldn't leave his books to, it was bad enough some of them were already worse for wear from love and age.

"You're on!" Aerith pumped her fists one after the other, even if that was the exact opposite of what she wanted to play out. "Ten gil it's just hot steam whistling from the kettles before bedtime."

Though that wasn't the only reason she had wandered near-enough to Gladio's tent to shoot him a comment in passing. "Actually, I wanted to ask you something. Only if you really wouldn't mind —" she pointed at his travel bag. "You wouldn't happen to be packing any spare books that I could borrow?"

you know, i hate that argument of "Gladio wouldn't have used the Ring to save Noctis if he'd gotten there first," like it's an insult to Gladio and a compliment to Ignis.

Gladio got to grow up in his own family home, with his parents. Gladio has hobbies and things he cares about outside of his job, because he was allowed to have them. so yeah, Gladio probably would have thought twice before dooming himself on impulse.

Ignis has no sense of self-preservation; he was never allowed to develop one. his decision to use the Ring cost him his eyesight and didn't actually even save Noctis (Ardyn couldn't have killed him there, he needed to lure someone to the Crystal first). so in the end, Ignis' loyalty only served to hurt Ignis himself.

i'm happy that Gladio probably wouldn't have touched the Ring, and i wish Ignis hadn't either. but i understand why he did.
