Bestie can you share this again
you bet. First we have the direct and unambiguous examples on ttpd:
So Long, London: "I didn't opt in to be your odd man out /I founded the club she's heard great things about". This example is perhaps the most straightforward that it was not just someone he had a crush on because (1) it was reciprocal with the woman (also i take the 'shes heard great things about' to be that the woman only knew joe was a 'great guy' bc taylors songs (the club she founded) up to that point had painted him as such) (2) being the odd man out directly implies two people were together and one person of these three people was not included. That makes it more than "thought crime". They were physically together
How Did It End?: "We were blind to unforeseen circumstances / We learned the right steps to different dances / And feel victim to interlopers' glances" - an interloper is an unwanted and often unexpected person in a situation. An interloper caused both of them to make decisions that ended things - this isn't referring to taylor's actions in guilty as sin btw - this is her choosing to buy the dream ratty sold her and use it as a reason to finally leave joe - quite literally how it ended right? She finally got the guts to leave Joe, and left him to be with Ratty. Likewise, joe being with another girl was something taylor dealt with at least once with joe but IMO more than once, and notably, it wasn't just that he cheated with someone and it meant nothing, but we know from FOTS, he had feelings for this person when he was not with her even after the fact, and, that the person also meant something to him (imo that would make the burn sting a lot more than it being some drunken mistake eg)
How Did It End?: ""Soon they'll go home to their husbands / Smug 'cause they know they can trust him" This is also very directly saying, the people who find out the story of "how did it end?" btwn taylor and joe will go home to their husbands, feeling superior and self-righteous that their husbands would never "do what joe did" and "can be trusted". The only thing this on this entire planet that can possibly refer to is infidelity.
Fresh Out The Slammer: "Splintered back in winter, silent dinners, bitter / He was with her in dreams". See above. He had feelings for this person! They were fighting and he was thinking about being with the other woman instead of his current situation.
Less overt:
Fortnight: "but what about your quiet treason" + "my husband is cheating I want to kill him". The quiet treason is a secret betrayal, again, cheating that was hidden from her. This plus everything else (being ignored, lonely, etc.) drove her to the drinking as a coping mechanism)
Florida!!!: "and your cheating husband disappeared? well no questions asked here." this song the story of dreaming of running away from your life and hiding out somewhere new, and this lyric creates imagery of, 'you have a cheating husband that has suddenly disappeared? (been killed) i wont say a word' and in a vacuum/isolated instance, i think we couldve chalk it up to artistic liberty for storytelling's sake, but for the bigger picture, it's not an isolated mention. When we look at Florida!!! in context of the entire album, and know that it is a song about dreading a breakup with your current guy because of the shit storm it would create, and you wanna run and hide to avoid it, when part of that running away includes dreams of maybe burying your cheating husband in a swamp, i think it's noteworthy. and before someone says "but that's florence's verse!" they wrote this song together, not in isolated cells, and if taylor didn't want that implication out there she would have not put it out there.
Guilty as Sin? "Am I allowed to cry?" one of the meanings of her asking this at the end (after she gets off) is asking whether she is allowed to be sad about what he did, when she is also maybe guilty of something, too
Prior albums:
The Great War: "maybe it was my ego swinging, maybe it was her" - Her is the other woman. Her ego was bruised, this is why she tore all his banners down and isolated herself while drinking. Side note: "you have to trust more freely" makes my blood boil especially since cheating was a known trigger for her (he was playing w fire)

for me, it keeps coming back the now deleted scene in anti-hero where taylor first openly used art about something that directly impacted her mental health. and i get why it would be triggering and uncomfortable to see a thin woman portray herself as "fat" on a scale. i understand the "problematic" edge to it. and yet... i still hate y'all for thinkpiecing her into deleting the scene. it was art about something that directly impacted HER mental health and folks felt entitled to tell her how she could make art about something that impacts HER. that HER MENTAL HEALTH was distressing them, could she pretty please censor it so it would stop triggering them.
like fuck y'all. i hope she never feels the need to censor herself again to cater to you fuck ass bitches. some of you DO need to be told you're being overbearing and entitled, sorry! you don't get to censor art just because you don't like who's making it or feel the person who made it isn't allowed to use art the way they used it.

everyone is talking about taylor’s relationship with us and im just like. she hates us because we analyze her, but she loves us because we see her. it’s a contradiction she can’t escape. on eras tour, she literally talks about how sharing her feelings with us helps her heal, and then in TTPD, she says how the curiosity and opinions feel stifling. i think it’s just one of those things. she hates blurring the lines of our relationship because of what it does to her, and she’s valid in inserting herself in the space that discusses her and being mad, but she also can’t have us without sharing herself and opening herself to the scrutiny. and this is not me abstaining fans of being invasive, but rather just making a point.

The "Free Britney"-movement plus accompanying documentary etc. was crucial in making people rethink the way we view women in the public eye (as part of the general reevaluation of 90s and 2000s misogyny), which is a very very good thing (!), but the specific way in which that discourse has entered Swiftdom sometimes feels a bit ... revisionist? It is not done on purpose, but once in a while I see a post or TikTok screenshot that places Taylor firmly in the “child star” category – where she does belong! – and automatically assumes that she thus has faced all the obstacles of people like Britney or her Disney peers. And it is not on me to say whether or not she has or hasn’t, or – God forbid – whether or not she had it “easier” than them (whatever that would mean), but it irks me when people frame certain choices Taylor made solely as the doing of Big Publicist or Her Overbearing Parents. Those two parties surely played a part in shaping Taylor and her career, and certainly not always in a gentle way that really and truly only had Taylor’s best interests at heart, but Taylor has always been extremely aware of The Culture, the demands of people, what sells and doesn’t sell, and, most importantly: what you should never ever do in the public eye. In the beginning of her career she constantly mentions watching “Behind the Music” and analyzing why musicians failed. Her 2019 Billboard Woman of the Year speech consists entirely of her listing the demands of people and how she responded to them by contorting herself into a shape she herself didn’t recognize. We can all make jokes about Andrea or Paula telling Taylor to not put “I Can See You” on Speak Now, but the reality could very well be that 19-year-old Taylor Swift saw the way her colleagues were getting torn apart for daring to be sexual in public, and chose to spare herself that. (After all, when her manager Paula tried to push the “good virginial pure girl” image on a Taylor who did not want to be that anymore, Paula got fired.) And of course that still fucks you up!!! And it’s still fucking evil!!! But it is not the same as having your entire life dictated by somebody else – for better or for worse: part of what makes Taylor’s musings about fame so interesting is that she is very much saying “this is what you (the public) did to me”, but she is also always grappling with the “and this is how I reacted to it”. I also do not want to insinuate that Taylor was 100% free in her choices and had a smooth and easy ride (because that would be a big fat lie). But she has had a great sense of self-preservation and likely a good deal of autonomy from day one, and it feels strange to try and take that away from her.

everyone needs to reconcile with the fact that taylor actually felt insane and like she should be in an asylum and she actually felt like dying. ofc in hindsight she can see that all of it hyperbolic, but these are not just metaphors. it was true in the moment. she’s also tired of the public image of a good girl because she inflicted that on herself and that hindered her from growing, and public inflicting this image on her is also hindering her, and she hates that. she wants to make mistakes and learn on her own and she has reconciled with the fact that she’ll have to live with herself and live with regret because she chose to do it. she thinks she’s fucked up because she is! and she wants the public to see it! (even though now i think she’s trying to un-fuck herself)

I literally can’t stop thinking about how the literal FIRST lyrics we ever heard about Joe were “Knew he was a killer first time that I saw him” and then spends every song on TTPD about how loving him was literally killing her. Idk idk idk
