A German U-Boat risks surfacing to recharge its batteries after sinking a merchant ship in the Atlantic - exact date and location unknown.

You can see up on the coning tower, members of the crew keeping watch for enemy planes or vessels. This procedure, early on in the war made the U-Boats vulnerable to attack. It was common for them to only surface under the cover of darkness for this reason.

It wasn’t until the last year of the war when Dutch engineers invented the Schnorchel (snorkel), which allowed the U-Boat to remain underwater for greater periods of time that this became less of an issue.
