Oh, alcohol—
and would you please forgive me?
For while I cannot love myself,
I’ll be something else…

several months ago I put together this wheatley gijinka for fun (read: because I wanted to make him and glados have domestic quarrels)
and then I blinked and October was almost over
anyway these are old but I still like them

some visual psychological metaphors in portal 2
Tumblr media
While each of these things aren’t necessarily examples of their respective metaphor, there are cases for each of them being demonstrated elsewhere in the game.
For example, Repetition Compulsions: when Wheatley is operating the maintenance elevator, he says, “Oh! Look at that. It's turning. Ominous. But probably fine. Long as it doesn't start moving up...” — and then Wheatley, who not even five minutes ago had demonstrated that he knew how to use the control panels to manipulate the facility (by opening the secret panel that he already knew was there) and could do so fairly competently, “””accidentally””” makes the elevator bring them back to GLaDOS, and “””accidentally””” wakes up GLaDOS in the process, effectively putting himself back in a dangerous situation.
…Among other things, but I’m having trouble collapsing everything into comprehensible and properly-ordered words. Might make a follow-up post when I feel a bit more articulate.

"Look at this! No rail to tell us where to go! OH, this is brilliant. We can go wherever we want! Jus— hold on, though, where are we going? Seriously. Hang on, let me just— get my bearings. Um… Just— follow the rail, actually.”

Just played the Portals for the first time, like, a month or two ago. I have a lot of thoughts, but this is the one that really wanted to come out first, I guess.

Another Nintendo character is an ancient being with floating green rings and eye motifs. I have to wonder if there’s, like, some kind of very specific reference material both characters were inspired by? Maybe some sort of Japanese folktale, or…?

“I don't need your advice. I don't need your ratings. And I certainly don't need the validation of a man whose job is to push buttons.
“I think I'll just go about my business making meaningful cultural contributions to the world. And perhaps, every now and then, I'll think back to a man named Stanley, who was objectively wrong in every decision he ever made. The thought won't last long.
“Goodbye, Stanley. Good luck with your work, and I sincerely hope that everyone lives happily ever after.”
