Big dumb Sailor Moon episode 100
I’ve been wanting to post this for a while when I was rewatching it but put it off. But I just wanted to show this conversation between Minako and Haruka in episode 100 in Sailor Moon S.
The context for this episode is that Minako is having a bit of an.. identity crises I guess you could call it? Basically, she use to be very into Volleyball and was quite good at it. She also had a potential boyfriend in one of the other players. But once she became Sailor Venus she gave it up to focus on like… you know…. Saving the world and shit.
The first half of season S focuses on people’s “Pure Hearts” which are literal crystallization of people’s ambitions and working towards a goal or something they wish to accomplish. Minako has a lot of self doubt during this season because she feels she’s not really applying herself to anything at all, despite having lots of interests she’s not actively putting any effort into them. And she starts to wonder if she’s really making the right choice giving things up that could actually be intergral to making her be a better human being. Especially when it seems the other senshi all seem to have a better grasp on their personal lives and ambitions as well as actually fighting bad guys and saving the world.
Anyway, at some point in the episode while she’s brooding about this she runs into Haruka. At this point, Minako is not aware that Haruka is Sailor Uranus, nor is Haruka aware that Minako is Sailor Venus.
Minako brings up the question if Haruka has a boyfriend. (which is kind of a dumb question on her part. And yes, in the Japanese language track she specifically asks about a boyfriend). When Haruka says she does not, Minako goes on to pry, saying that “But you do have someone you like right?” and then goes on to ask “What kind of person does a race-car driving cool person like Haruka like?” going on when Haruka doesn’t answer with “Does it have to be a man with special talents about him?” (again, referring to a man which I’m 100% convinced is intentional on the writing part)
Now here’s where it gets interesting.
Minako is prying because she’s projecting her own want to pursue a relationship with a boy SHE likes. (Minako tends to project a lot). But because she’s a Sailor Senshi, she feels this may not be the right decision to pursue a romance when she is not a typical teenaged school girl.
She asks Haruka because Haruka is also in high school but is older than Minako (either by a year or 2 years depending on their birthdays) but is also very much NOT a typical schoolgirl. Haruka wears the boy’s uniform to school and is a prodigy race car driver (she is also a skilled fencer and piano player but the anime doesn’t bring that up often, generally focusing on the racing part). And more importantly, never does Haruka try to hide who she is. Minako is a VERY typical teenaged girl in her world view. She likes boys, she likes dating, she likes pop-idols, she likes fashion etc etc. She IS ‘Sailor Venus’ after all and the embodiment of Aphrodite in more ways than one.
So for Minako, figuring out how to be “a teenaged girl” as she believes one to be is very difficult when trying to accept “But I am NOT a typical teenaged girl”. And since Haruka bumped into her and asked her why she seemed upset, Minako asked her about this since Haruka is obviously NOT the kind of teenaged girl to chase guys and dates. And Minako, because of the kind of person she is, is looking for answers to “but how does one live and not just be normal like you’re suppose to?”
And Haruka answers this way, and honestly, I hadn’t realised when I watched this the first time how important this dialogue is. Not JUST regarding sexual orientation and gender, but just to the concept of “BEING NORMAL” we sometimes build up for ourselves:
At no point do either of them directly bring up the fact that Haruka is a lesbian and/or genderfluid, but it is 100% clear that this is what they’re discussing regarding the idea of “How to be normal” in Haruka’s case.

straight people hanging out: hey I haven't seen you in a while! How are you? How are the kids? Do you have any fun house renovations going on? Not until the weekend? Well thank god it's Friday, right?
gay people hanging out: If it cannot hatch from its shell, the chick will die without ever truly being born. We are the chick; the world is our egg. If we don't break the world's shell, we will die without truly being born. Smash the world's shell, for the Revolution of the World!
