Just like any other Thursday morning of recent weeks, Katie and Jenny were killing time together in their favourite coffee shop just down the street from their shared apartment. It had become Katie's haven and her go-to place when she wanted to lose herself for a few hours people watching, letting the stories of their lives unfold around her.
She'd always had a knack for paying attention to the details, noticing things which passed by most others. It was a skill she'd relied on heavily in her work, always giving her the edge, at least it had until the time it led to her downfall at Panacea Labs.
Katie had recently walked out of her job after piecing together a scheme under the radar to roll out a costly new drug for treating MS, despite there being multiple warning signs that it was ultimately ineffective but instead just masked the symptoms. Anyone else would've just glossed over the signs, not even noticing, but to Katie, the anomalies jumped off the page unmistakably. It was when she tried to escalate her concerns that she was shut down and her life in the lab made a misery by the VP, Declan Nash.
It hadn't taken long for her to realise that the company was more concerned about profits than actually helping people and she knew that the battle to fall in line and keep her job wasn't worth it. After calmly and quietly sending a company wide report on her findings, she gathered her things and walked out before she could be accosted by security. Little did she know that Nash had already been keeping tabs on her communications, in his eyes she was a trouble maker, and the report never saw the light of day.
Unfortunately for Katie, the current opportunities for young women in the biotech and pharmaceutical world just weren't what they should have been and she spent the next few weeks furiously searching for something else to avoid her work visa being revoked.
Having moved from London to attend the New York Institute of Technology and graduating with a Masters in Chemistry & Bio Engineering three years ago, she'd fallen in love with the city and the life she'd built. She didn't know exactly what the future held and couldn't put her finger on why, but she had a very strong feeling that she needed to stay in New York.
Today, Katie had planned to work through all the job adverts remotely relating to her experience and qualifications, with Jenny on hand to offer moral support. Tiring quickly of hitting one brick wall after another, they'd long forgotten the laptop and instead had spent the last 30 minutes idly chatting about Jenny’s upcoming gallery event when Lucinda arrived, phone to her ear, her body tense and voice sharp as she wrapped up a call with her boss.
"Of course I've got someone Angela, I wouldn't put my name in the mix if I didn't. My candidate is going to blow the others out of the water, I just know Mr Dalton will be impressed....no not just impressed, he'll be awestruck..."
While waiting for her to wrap up her call, Katie heads to the counter to order Lucinda a much needed coffee and returns to place it down in front of her just as she hangs up. She tosses her phone onto the table and slumps back in her chair, defeated.
Jenny stares her down waiting for an explanation which she and Katie both know Lucinda desperately wants to give but is holding off for dramatic effect.
After a long sip of coffee and a moment of holding her head in her hands she finally exhales.
"I am so SO SCREWED."
Katie and Jenny share a look before returning their attention to Lucinda.
"I've just promised my boss that I have the perfect candidate for some billionaire business man's nanny position....." She glares at them both as if they should understand why that's a problem. "I never touch these sorts of jobs, I only ever look for candidates in finance, nannying isn't worth my time."
Katie chooses her words carefully, knowing how Lucinda can bite back pretty quickly when she's stressed. Speaking softly, cautious not to poke the bear, she looks Lucinda in the eye and internally braces herself for whatever might come next.
"So what made this one so different?"
Fortunately Lucinda seems to finally be relaxing, she replies more quietly.
"Filling this position will put me on the map, nobody in the firm has been able to secure someone for this guy, they only seem to last a few weeks before they quit so the sign on bonus never kicks in. If I could find the perfect person I wouldn't only get a great bonus, I'd be next in line for promotion to Senior Head-hunter."
Her demanding demeanour melts away and she's left looking almost vulnerable. Something Katie knows Lucinda doesn't find at all comfortable.
"Anyway, I'll figure it out, I always do."
She gives Katie and Jenny a soft smile, allowing herself to momentarily forget about her woes so she can refocus the attention back to them.
"So what were you guys talking about before I came in?"
As Katie opens her mouth to speak Jenny cuts in on her behalf.
"Oh Katie's just been trying to work out how to get a job before her visa renewal date comes up in a couple of weeks."
Katie lets out a sigh of her own, suddenly remembering how dire her employment prospects are and feeling equally as defeated as Lucinda.
"I can't believe I've worked so hard for my degree, I found the perfect job in the perfect city but now it's all gone down the drain and I'm going to have to go back home and never see you all again."
Jenny wraps her arm around Katie's shoulders, pulling her close. "Oh come on, like you'd be able to shake us off. Even if you are in another country!"
As suddenly as Lucinda dramatically entered the coffee shop she slams her hand onto the table making the others jump.
"THAT'S IT!" She cries, her idea almost exploding out of her. "This is just too perfect...."
Katie and Jenny share a confused look before turning back to Lucinda who is practically foaming at the mouth, clearly onto something, though they're not quite sure what.
"You need a job, I need a candidate." She says in her signature matter of fact style.
Katie still has no idea where Lucinda's going with this.
"It's win win. I'll put you forward for the nanny position, you'll get a great job which means you get to stay in New York, I'll get my bonus. Not to mention I'll look like a damn superhero at work!"
The cogs start to turn in Katie's brain as she begins to digest what Lucinda is proposing.
"But I'm not a nanny....and what about my visa, it's only valid for work in relation to my degree."
Lucinda waves her hand at her, dismissing her concerns. "No problem there then. This guy's family owns one of the biggest Biotech companies in the country, surely that's related to your degree? He's so desperate for a successful match I'll make sure the visa thing is part of the contract."
She cuts back in quickly just as Katie opens her mouth to object.
"And as for you not being a nanny, what about all those times in the lab when you had to pull rank and sort out the shit that went down between your useless colleagues? You've done more nannying of adults in the last two years than most actual nanny's do in their whole career with children."
Jenny suddenly chimes in "OH MY GOD, this is genius!"
Defeated, Katie turns to look at Jenny in disbelief. She may have had a chance saying no to just Lucinda but with Jenny on board with this idea as well she may as well give up now.
"This will solve both your problems, I mean come on, who wouldn't want to work for this guy..."
Jenny turns her phone to Katie, clearly having been searching while she and Lucinda were talking. On the screen Katie sees the most devastatingly handsome man she's ever come across. He's nothing like the guys she'd known before, this person, was a real man and the sight of him caused her stomach to flip.
While undeniably handsome, it's not just the physical attraction that she's drawn to. Her eyes move to the company bio underneath his headshot and in true Katie style, she scans all of the accolades and achievements the company has to boast about. Her mind races at the possibilities. There's no mistaking that working for this man could open the door to so many opportunities and experiences in the future.
With a sigh she resigns herself to the fact that Lucinda might actually be on to something, this could be the break Katie had been waiting for and would certainly solve her imminent visa problems if she could get it taken care of as part of the contract negotiations.
With a silent nod and slight shrug of the shoulders, she begrudgingly agrees, much to the delight of her friends who squeal at each other in delight. Lucinda immediately pushes her shoulders back, standing to attention, furiously beginning to type on her phone.
"You TA'd for your old professor right?"
"Yes, I did a year as their assistant after graduating. Mainly doing research and going to conferences with her."
Lucinda's eyes never leave her phone as she works her magic, spinning Katie's words into an impressive resume. After a moment she raises her eyebrows and flits her eyes over to Katie, a small gesture which Katie realises is an invitation to elaborate.
"Oh, yeah so that's actually how I got into Panacea Labs, I met a rep at one of those conferences."
Jenny rolls her eyes at the mention of Katie's old company, now affectionately known by them both as Pariah Labs. Despite what she felt about Katie's previous employer, she was immensely proud of Katie's achievements and wanted to make sure they were included.
"Weren't you the youngest lab boss thingy they'd ever had?"
"Senior lab technician." Katie corrects, knowing full well that Jenny hasn't got a clue about the finer details of her work. "Well, yeah eventually, after two years of working my butt off. But I hardly think they'd rave about that in any reference they give me. If they even give one to begin with..."
Lucinda waves a dismissive hand at her.
"With this resume, you won't need any reference from those bastards. Trust me."
Katie had no idea what Lucinda had written or how she'd managed to spin her experience to be more favourable for a nanny position but it must've worked because half an hour later Lucinda slammed her hand down on the table once again, causing everyone around them to jump out of their skin.
"YES! It worked...he wants to see you, you've got an interview tomorrow at the Dalton Enterprises headquarters".
She turns her phone to Jenny to show off the email and they fall into an animated conversation, no doubt planning how they're all going to celebrate once Katie inevitably gets offered the job. As they fall into a blur in the background, Katie looks back over the picture of Sam Dalton on Jenny's phone, not quite sure how she can be so hypnotised by someone through a photograph.
There's something about him which feels familiar, something drawing her in. It's almost as if they're viewing each other through a looking glass and she wonders whether in this exact moment he is feeling the same magnetic pull towards her, a stranger whom he hasn't even met yet. Tearing her eyes away from the phone, Katie's tries to steady the stream of unanswered questions flooding her mind and focus on how she's going to win this man over.
"Here goes nothing."

Book: The Nanny Affair Book 2 (yay!)
Word count: 2750 (+/-)
Warning: 🍋NSFW🍋; smut, angst, a smidge of fluff and language
Song Inspiration: "21 Questions" by Waterparks
A/N: Book 2 is coming out THIS FRIDAY (the 18th), and I am so excited! What better way to celebrate than to publish this WIP that I've been working on for months! This takes places 3 weeks after everyone returns from Italy, and this is just my idea of what could've possibly happened, my own "chapter 1", if you will! HUGE thanks to my sweet D @chemist-ana for helping me through some snags (and for being such a helpful cheerleader always). These characters and some plots belong to Pixelberry! By continuing to read, you acknowledge you are at least 18 years of age.

The early morning sunlight casually melts into the New York City skyline. Brilliant rays of gold and platinum sneak into the opulent penthouse master suite, dancing across Brynn's soft, exposed skin. The subtle warmth tenderly wakes her from a deep, relaxed sleep.
Noticing his arms aren't draped around her waist, her eyes flutter open to survey Sam's cozy bed. She runs her curious hands across his side of the bed, earnestly searching for his heat, but is met with cold, disheveled sheets. A mischievous smile spreads across her face as the abrupt, muffled sound of running water from the shower interrupts the silence.
Slinking off the bed, she quietly tip-toes to the ensuite bathroom, carefully avoiding the scattered, discarded garments on the floor from their late night of cocktails. Peeking in the door, she spots the back of his perfect body as white clouds of steam swallow the curves of his musculature.
She opens the door wider, lounging against the doorframe to admire the view. Chewing on her thumbnail, she soaks in the chisel contours of his olive complexion. Her eyes wander intently from his strong, broad shoulders to his deliciously rounded rear. A hungry smile creeps across her face, her nipples hardening at the budding electricity between her legs.
And he's finally all hers.
I love you. She had been craving those three simple words the moment she felt the desire and sensual touch of her boss Sam Dalton; but unfortunately, the complexity of his life kept them apart.
He was engaged to his life-long, family-friend Sofia Russo. Their union would reap incredible benefits, not just for them, but for both of their families, starting with a merger of the multi-billion-dollar companies. Sam was promised chief executive officer of his father's company with the demonstration of a well-rounded life of success inside and outside of the boardroom. He had dedicated his entire career to taking over the family business. And, to achieve something like that before his fortieth birthday created more buzz around the business. New vendors. New contracts. More sales. But, what settled his heart the most on this decision is the legacy he would leave for his two young sons.
And then, he hired her.
Brynn Schuyler was a sudden break of fresh of air in the whirlwind storm of his life. A chemistry graduate from UMass Amherst, she debuted her clinical skills at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory. After the funding was pulled from her research project, she moved to New York for better career opportunities. But with no leads and money dwindling, she knew she would have to get creative.
So, she applied to be a nanny to his sons.
Vibrant, intelligent, stunningly beautiful: Sam was hopeless to the pull of her magnetism. He wanted to touch the flush of her cheeks. He wanted to taste the sweet citrus of her pout. He wanted to hear his name on her tongue.
Before he knew it, his fantasies became reality; their relationship turned from charming, flirtatious conversations to a seductive ravaging of each other's bodies. But after each encounter of squelching his hard desire, Sam would abruptly sober up to his actions, often times leaving Brynn hurt and confused. The scandalous affair he wasn't ready to start quickly became the messy affair he refused to end.
Three weeks ago, however, everything changed on what started as a business trip to Italy. After agreeing with his bride to move up the wedding, Sam discovered that his lust for Brynn was more than that: he had fallen in love with her.
But, before Sam could handle things privately, his bride had a secret of her own: she was having an affair with his best friend Robin. Sofia revealed her knowledge and hurt of Sam's affair with the nanny before Brynn could put her on blast about her relations with Robin. Needless to say, it was a circus of embarrassment for both the Daltons and the Russos. But with the merger contracts already signed, both parties agreed to continue with the nuptials--that is until Sam realized what mattered most to him: Mickey and Mason. Brynn had brought their family closer together than they ever thought imaginable, even making Sam a better father to the twins. She was more than just a nanny to all of them. She was his second chance at love.
Leaving a humiliated Sofia at the altar, Sam grabbed the boys and scurried off to find Brynn. After he publicly declared his love for her, Brynn realized how deeply she cared for this man and his family, desiring a forever with them.
Everything was perfect. Almost.
Brynn sashays closer to the foggy glass shower. Dragging her teeth across her bottom lip, her desire growing thirsty for Sam. Slipping through the door, she glides her fingertips across his back. His muscles quickly contract, shuddering in anticipation under her tender touch.
He watches her slender fingers grip around his shoulders. He exhales a growl, feeling her forehead rest against the dampened skin of his back. The sudden brush of her supple lips against his shoulder blade turns him around, desperate for a taste.
“G’morning,” Sam’s hoarse voice greets her, his mouth claiming her inviting smile. His hands wander down the slope of her spine, gripping affectionately to the plump curves of her rear.
“Morning,” she chuckles into another searing kiss. His hands intently knead her ass as his baited breath tickles her nose. “Are you ready to get back at it this morning?”
“I’m ready for right now,” Sam whispers in her ear, dragging his teeth across her soft neck.
“Sam--” she playfully whimpers, feeling his hardening length push against her belly. “Last night wasn’t enough for you?”
“With you--” he pants, “--it’s never enough,” he huskily chuckles, lifting her leg around his hip. He fervently suckles a path from her collar bone to behind her ear; his fingers wildly catch in her almond tresses, holding her captive to his taut body. “My alarm hasn’t gone off yet--” he nips at her jaw.
“Mhmm--” Brynn quietly moans, draping her arm around Sam’s neck, pressing her hips harder into his.
“We have--” his words turn breathy, “--um, a few minutes--”
“Stop talking, Mr. Dalton--” she taunts, gently stroking Sam’s entire girth with her other hand.”--and fuck me.”
With reckless hunger, Sam pushes Brynn against the shower wall, allowing the warm water to rain down on their morning tryst. Tangling his fingers in her damp tresses, he forcefully whips her head back. She pants helplessly, her neck exposed to him. He nuzzles his nose gently across her soft skin, stopping to peck sweetly at his bite marks from his previous ravaging conquests of her body.
He softly let's go of his grip, cradling her head in his hand as he carefully pushes her damp wayward strands behind her ear. Her breathing becomes more labored, her heartrate accelerating. Her anticipation grows. And throbs. His mouth meets hers, his tongue extorting her lips to part. Their ravenous tongues tangle, hungrily lapping for deeper depths of each other.
Sam quickly bucks his hips into Brynn, grabbing her other leg as he pushes her body against the cold tile. Tightening her legs around his waist, she drags her nails down the firm concaves of his abs and chest, causing him to thrust himself further between her thighs. Running his earnest fingers up her thighs, he captures her wrists, overpowering her. Seizing her hands, he pins them above her head against the wall. Sam’s mouth overwhelms her whimpers, pulling her supple bottom lip between his teeth. Her head lolls backwards at the feel of his fully erect cock teasing her entrance.
Gripping tightly to her ass, he plunges his length deep into her depths. Balancing her against the shower wall, Sam holds her wrists firmly above her head as he pummels himself in her again, and again Brynn cries mercilessly in ecstasy as her tight center relaxes slowly to his ravaging pumps. The harder he pushes, the deeper he joins her.
Her plump breasts ricochet eccentrically for her lover's taking, her nipples hardening to her pleasure. Sam bows his face between her alluring curves, worshipping their softness against the stubble of his chiseled cheeks. As he continues to burry himself to the hilt into her drenched sheath, his mouth seeks to taste her ample peaks. He quickly drops his hands, gripping behind voluptuous rear.to push himself further into her body.
Brynn drops her arms, her fingers combing through Sam’s damp waves. She feels his hot breath against her chest before he suddenly sucks in her pert nipples. “Sam--!” her shriek of ecstasy stolen by her desperate gasp for air. Her hand presses Sam’s head into the fullness of her breast. Her eyes pinch shut as her other hand trembles, pressing against the fogged glass.
Sam nibbles harder on her taut peaks. As he draws closer to his release, his thrusts become harder, each bounce quicker, hungrier. He pulls on her sensitive skin with his teeth. Taking one of his hands, he eagerly crawls his fingers between their bodies, searching for her throbbing clit
“Oh--!” Brynn whines, her breathing crescendoing as Sam’s strokes become more fervent with the pressure of his hips melting in her hips. “Sam--! I--!” She squeezes her legs around his waist, burying him deep inside her. “Please--!” she breathlessly begs, her hands creep down the strong flexion of his back. Sam's finger quickly twirls with his thumb, demanding her orgasm.
Scratching her fingernails slowly up his shoulders, Brynn’s body trembles; her moans bubble uncontrollably from her lips as Sam’s cock thrusts one last time deep within her. Her walls quiver against his length sending them both, hurtling towards a plunge into a sea of pleasure. His deep groans vibrate off of the glass shower walls. Their cries of ecstasy entangle as waves of passion overcome their bodies with euphoria.
Sam quickly steals Brynn’s mouth in a searing kiss, stealing her breath as her body rides out her release. Their tongues tenderly meet, panting in between each nibble.
Brynn rolls her head forward, resting her head on Sam’s shoulder. Sam presses his cheek to hers as their heartbeats begin to settle together. Gingerly embracing her body, he removes himself from her, slowly setting her on the ground. He holds her tightly until she finds her footing against the tiled floor.
Stroking her wet hair back, he brushes his lips against the shell of her ear. “I love you.”
Brynn singsongs a moan, giggling as she presses her lips on his neck, marking a trail of warm suckles down his chest. Wrapping her arms around his waist, she looks up into his intense gaze. “I love you, too.”
Sam captures one more--two more--kisses, stroking his thumb across Brynn’s cheek. “We better go get ready. I’m pretty sure you woke up the entire penthouse with that--”
“Sam--!” She playfully scoffs, blushing into a knowing grin as she swats at his arm. She grabs their towels to dry off as Sam turns off the shower head. Handing him a towel, he grabs her wrist, pulling her into one more kiss. As she carefully scrunches the excess moisture in her waves, she walks towards the bedroom to grab her robe in hopes to make it back to her room before the twins wake up.
But suddenly, a whipped popping sound reverberates through the room. Brynn yelps in pain, reaching back to touch the sudden stinging sensation on her rear end. Rubbing at the soreness, she spins on her heel to find a mischievous looking Sam, stifling a laugh as he retwists his towel.
“Samuel! That hurt--!” Without warning, he flicks his wrist again, popping her curvy ass again with precision. “Sam!” Brynn steps backward away from him; but he takes a step forward, winding up again to pounce her with the towel. “Don’t you dare, Samuel Dal--TON!” She squeals his name as the towel whips at her assets again and against.
With a giant, jovial smile on his face, Sam chases his lover around the room until she finally caught the towel in her hands. “Clever girl,” he jokes, as he tugs on the towel, warring with her own grip. Their laughter welds together as they fight over the towel, However, their fun is interrupted with Sam’s phone ringing.
Brynn looks at the clock. “Who is calling seven in the morning?”
Sam’s expression turns serious when he sees the name on his called ID. He lowers his voice, turning away from Brynn. She quietly tiptoes, sneaking up behind him. She playfully grips his ass before tracing her fingers around his waist, kissing his shoulder blades But, he quickly stops her, walking away from her. She wraps her robe around her body as she tidies up the bed. He quickly turns to look at Brynn, his eyebrows knit with worry. “Yeah, okay. I will. I’ll take care of it, Dad.”
Sam hangs up, fixing a smile on his face as Brynn fluffs his pillow. “Is everything alright?”
“Yeah--yeah, of course,” he clears his throat. He walks up behind Brynn, surprising her by grabbing her hips. “I’ve got an idea, babe--”
"Mmmm,” Brynn twirls around, locking her arms around his neck. “I like the sound of that--” she snickers, “‘babe’.” She pecks him on his lower lip.
“How about," he continues, "you take the day off?”
Brynn’s smile slowly falls into confusion. “It’s your first day back at the office. You can’t--”
“I mean you,” he kisses her nose. “You’ve been working so hard, getting the boys settled and ready for school--”
“But,” she furrows her eyebrows, trying hard to smile, trying hard not to think that Sam is hiding something from her. “Sam, it’s the first day of school--”
“Exactly. It’s going to be a madhouse down there.”
Brynn pushes past Sam’s arms. She sits down on the made-up bed, staring at the sunrise. “But, how else am I supposed to learn our morning and afternoon routine?”
“We’ll--just--figure it out as we go--”
“But the boys wanted me to walk them--”
“Just--!” Sam realizes he’s yelling, quickly softening his tone. “Just take the day off, Brynn.”
Brynn stands up, crossing her arms with confusion on her face. “What aren’t you telling me?”
“What--what do you mean--?” Sam trips over his words.
“What did your father say? On the phone?” Brynn glares at Sam as he fails to rebuttal.
Sam sighs, exhaling deeply. He takes Brynn’s hand in his and he sits on the bed. “Apparently,” he rubs the back of his neck, “we are on the cover of several tabloid magazines, one of which claiming to have an exclusive on you.”
“So?” she curiously snickers. “Those are tabloids, for God’s sakes. And we knew this was going to happen, Sam. You warned me the moment you found me at the airport. Did you forget that both your lawyer and public relations specialist cornered me as I boarded the plane home? How they grilled me, trained me on what to say and what not to say to the press? Have you forgotten that I--”
“Brynn!” Sam interrupts her sternly. “Just--” he sighs, "be a good girl and just stay here.”
Brynn cinches her robe tighter. Her fingers tremble gripping onto the soft fabric. An awkward silence falls on the conversation as she pulls at her silk lapels in an effort to cover her exposed decollete. Her eyes glaze with tears, as her gaze trails back to Sam’s.
“Are you--” a sob hitches in her throat, “are you embarrassed of me? Of us?”
“Brynn baby--” Sam reaches for her wrist, but she abruptly snactches her arm away from his grasp, crossing her arms.
“Are you still hiding me? Hiding us?” Brynn blinks away her tears, but not before a single river traces down her soft cheeks. “After everything we’ve been through--?
“Listen, Brynn, you know how important this job is to me,” he cups her cheek, wiping away her tears. “It’s important for us. For our future. And believe me, baby, you are part of it.” Sam deeply exhales, trying to meet his eyes with her averted stormy blues. “It’s just that shareholders aren’t exactly thrilled with a company’s potential boss having a young mistress--”
Brynn’s eyes widen; she glares at Sam. “And there it is.”
“No-no--Baby, you don’t understand--”
“No, I get it,” Brynn storms to the door, raising her voice. “I’m the dirty mistress. I will always be the dirty mistress. Apparently that’s all I’m good for anyways.”

This tragically beautiful story has capture my attention completely, I’m so invested in this and can’t wait to see where the story goes…
Tumblr media
Book: The Nanny Affair
Series: Fractured
Characters: Sam, Ana Schuyler (MC)
Pairing: Sam Dalton (male) x Ana Schuyler (MC)
Rating: 18+
Content/Series Warning: Adult Language, Trigger Warnings: discussion of family member death: spouse and father.
Summary: Two and a half years after they get married are things the same?
Word Count: 2577
All characters belong to Pixelberry except for my OCs.
A/N: I really wanted to challenge myself with this series and fill it with tons of angst. I wanted to shove Ana and Sam into the midst of real life shit. I hope that I did it justice and this is just the beginning, it's short to set the tone for the rest of the series. A huge thank you for challenging me to give Ana and Sam MORE to @txemrn and for always being my sounding board and letting me bug her at 2 in the morning for help. You are the best P.

They say that running away from your problems is a race you will never win. I’m pretty sure my dad told me that… more times than I can count. Then how, after being married to Sam for two and a half years, did I manage to bury all of my insecurities about Eva? Why did we still live in the city, when I loathed it? I blamed life… it moves fast, it’s easy to not think about the things that upset you… until eventually, it all just bubbles up, and it’s impossible to not think about the things that hurt the most.
Tumblr media
I walked through the quiet penthouse, a box of Mickey and Mason’s completed school work, science projects, and tests weighing down the plastic box in my arms. Balancing the box on my hip, I opened the hall closet door, and it was packed full of things. Memories. I smiled softly with a shake of my head, kicking the door closed with my foot. With a sigh, I walked towards Sam’s home office. There has to be room in here. I set the box on the hardwood floor, tucking a loose piece of hair back into the bun sitting on the top of my head.
I walked from cabinet to cabinet, my eyes scanning the labels of paperwork, ledgers, and books, until a white box that was tucked neatly into a corner caught my attention. I kneel down to get a closer look and reach out to trace over the delicate and flowing cursive writing, Wedding and Memories. I closed my eyes as my breath quickly left my lungs in surprise, Eva. I look over my shoulder at the open office door, then to the watch on my wrist. I have time before anyone gets home… Chewing on my bottom lip, I sank down to my knees, pulling the box out of the cabinet and onto the office floor. I held my breath, listening carefully for any sounds in the quiet penthouse before I slid my fingertips underneath the lid and slowly lifted it, ignoring every single warning sign that was flashing through my determined mind.
I can handle this… right?
When I take another shallow, shaking breath, my senses are hit with the faint, delicate smell of jasmine. The first thing my eyes fall on is a wedding photo, and my heart starts pounding in my chest. I slowly reach into the box, carefully picking up a stack of old photographs. I run my thumb over Eva’s perfect smile, as my eyes admire a very youthful Sam, who is looking at her like she just hung the moon. Eva’s beautiful almond hair hung long down her back. Her blue eyes are the color of the sea… I don’t realize that I am crying until a single tear falls and blurs the blissful couple's faces. I pinch my eyes closed and quickly wipe at them with the back of my shirt sleeve. I flip through the top few photos, all of them portraying a life filled with happiness and love. My fingers trace the broad smile that Sam bears in each one. Photo after photo of effortless kisses, easy smiles, and candid laughter. A simpler time, when love was young and free. Uncomplicated.
I squeeze my eyes shut as the tears silently trail brazen paths down my cheeks. When all of his firsts were just that… firsts. When I reopen them, I set the photographs down softly on the wooden floor beside me, the images shaking in my unsteady grasp.
I push the heels of my hands into my eyes. Maybe you should just leave this alone… put all of this away and be done with it… but I knew… I knew I would be back. When I lower my hands, a folded piece of paper catches my attention, Eva is written across the front, in Sam’s handwriting.
My mind races, once you cross this line, there is no going back… A sense of resolve settles over me as I reach for the folded letter, slowly opening it to expose the words written inside. And I read.
My loveliest Eva,
You always told me you loved love letters. Well here is my first love letter to you. The woman of my dreams, the woman that holds my entire heart. You are what dreams are made of and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that our souls were made for each other. You are the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on, and I am thankful everyday that you chose me. —
I tear my eyes away. Closing the letter in my shaking hands. My breathing is shallow and quick as panic blooms in my stomach. I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, my senses telling me I am no longer alone. I turn towards the open door, and a somber looking Sam rests his shoulder on the door frame, his strong arms crossed tightly across his chest. The air is thick with tension as his eyes scan my face than the open box sitting on the floor beside me. His eyes finally settle on mine, the silence stretching on as he waits for me to speak first. I watch his jaw clench, and his Adam’s Apple rise and fall.
I look down at the folded love letter in my hand, my grip wrinkling the paper. My gaze lifts back to his dark eyes and his brows are lowered.
“Hi.” My voice sounds small as I search his face.
“Hi.” He responds as he slowly steps into the office.
“You kept all of this.” I look down at the box before lifting my gaze back to his.
He shrugs his shoulders slightly as his eyes scan my face. “You know how much she meant to me… and the boys.” He says quietly.
“Well, I thought I did. But I’m starting to get a better idea now.” I look down at the letter in my hand. “You were so happy.”
He kneels down at my side, taking my free hand in his. “Ana, I’m happy now.”
When I meet his eyes again, I can tell he believes his words, but is it actually true? He hasn’t experienced all of these firsts the same way I have, his first engagement, his first marriage… his first wedding night. I search his eyes before pulling my hand from his grasp, looking down at the photographs.
“Our love is nothing like this. It’s complicated… tainted.” I whisper the last word as shame fogs my mind.
“Ana-“ his voice is a warning.
I hold my hand up to stop him. “Sam… I believe you are happy. But… not like this.” I reach out and pick up one of their vacation photos, the look in his eyes makes my heart ache. The love, the devotion, the ease, is written across every laugh line on his face. Laugh lines that I didn’t give you.
I drop the letter in the box and reach out to grab the photos, setting them neatly back inside the box. I can feel Sam's gaze on me as I place the lid back on the box, pushing it carefully back into its hidden spot in the cabinet. His silence is speaking volumes as the beat of my heart pounds in my ears.
I reach up and swipe at the moisture on my cheeks. “It's movie night. I am going to see my dad.” I brush past him avoiding his gaze. He grabs my wrist bringing me to a stop. “Don’t Sam.” My voice cracks.
He drops his hold and I walk out of the room. Silence.
Tumblr media
I tap my toe to alleviate my toiling anxiety while I play with my wedding rings on my finger. I open my compact mirror noticing how red and puffy my eyes are from tears. I close my eyes but I find little relief, as the photos of Eva and Sam flash across the blackness. The elevator dings open on my parents floor and I walk quickly to their apartment, the click of my heels echoing on the marble tile. I pause outside of their door, taking a deep breath. Just try to forget about it.
“Hi, honey.” My mom calls from the kitchen as I unlock and open the door.
I clear my throat. “Hi. How is he?” I ask, as I set my bag on the counter and slip out of my pumps.
She looks up from the New York Times with a sigh. “He will be glad to see you.” She studies my face for a moment. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m just tired.” I manage a half smile to try and alleviate her worry.
Her brown eyes linger on me. Please don’t ask. Her face falls as her lips settle into a thin line. I purse my lips and turn away from her, taking deliberate steps towards my father’s room. He is laying down with his eyes closed, his gaunt frame barely recognizable from the tall, strong man that lives now only in my memories and in photographs. My eyes dart over to Emily who is looking at her charts intently.
“Hi.” I say softly, pausing and leaning on the door frame.
Emily’s head snaps up and her face softens in a smile. “Ana. Movie night tonight, right? I was just about to take this off.” She gestures towards his oxygen mask.
“Movie night.” I give her a smile. “And, I’ll do it, Emily. Thank you.”
“You got it. Let me know if there is anything I can do, I will give you guys a moment.” She makes her way towards me, giving my forearm a light squeeze before she walks out of the room.
The steady tick of the machine is the only sound in the room as I make my way over to where my father is resting. I place my hand on his shoulder and his emerald eyes flutter open. The wrinkles that frame them from countless happy memories, immediately deepen as I gently remove his mask and his lips turn up into his signature toothy smile.
“Apple.” He takes a shallow breath.
My chest tightens. “I just can’t seem to stay away from you, dad.” I smile, a genuine one, I think. “Ready for movie night? I was thinking we could watch the first Rocky movie tonight, what do you think?”
“Yes.” Breath. “That sounds.” Shaky breath. “Good.”
I lay down next to him, curling into his side and cuing up the movie. I gently rest my head on his shoulder and I let out a shaking breath.
“There is.” Breath. “Something wrong.” Breath. “I can tell.” His voice is quiet.
I lift my head from his shoulder and meet his eyes, which are filled with so much sadness. Do my eyes look the same way? My heart yearns to shoulder it all for him, but I wonder if I have the strength to carry it all. “Dad, it’s nothing worth talking about, or worrying about. Now hush, this is one of my favorites too.”
I put my head down and close my eyes as tears begin to gently fall down my cheeks. I hear my phone vibrate on the nightstand but I ignore it. This is where I need to be right now... I think.
Tumblr media
I attempt to knead the knots out of the back of my neck as I take the elevator ride up to the penthouse floor. My pumps are dangling from my fingertips. I glance at my phone for the time and ignore the 9 unread texts from Sam, midnight.
I sigh as the doors open to the foyer. The cold travertine floors greet my stockinged feet with a shock, and I silently curse this goddamn penthouse. As I round the corner into the living room I notice a lone floor lamp on, illuminating Sam as he sits quietly on the couch nursing a glass of scotch.
“Hi.” He murmurs.
I come to a stop in the entry to the large room, my mind running through all the things I should say to him. I feel like you loved her more than you love me. Am I second best? Did she make your days brighter than I do? Did your family love her more?  Instead I wrap my arms tightly around myself, trying to calm my racing heart while our eyes dare the other to speak first. An involuntary shiver travels up my spine, this time of year it always feels so cold in here, the chilled New York fall air breaking the glass barrier of the windows.
“You shouldn’t have left like that earlier.” He looks down as he swirls the golden liquid around in his glass, watching his liquid courage before he brings it up to his lips, tossing back what was left in the crystal tumbler.
My blood heats at his words. “I don’t think you are in a position to tell me what I should and shouldn’t do.” I curl my hands into fists at my side.
He clenches his jaw, his stormy brown eyes rising to mine. “What do you want from me, Ana?”
“Trust me, I wish I knew.” I spit with venom. I can feel my heart racing as my feet stay firmly rooted.
“I can’t change my past. I can’t change that I had a life before you.” His tone is even and measured. His strong chest rising and falling underneath his worn Henley t-shirt.
“I know that.” I pinch the bridge of my nose in irritation as I realize this is going absolutely nowhere. “But, Sam, that doesn’t make it hurt any less. You don’t look at me the same way. We don’t have the same pure origin love story. Our love story is tainted and complicated.” I take a breath as my voice breaks.
He stands up in one fluid movement and takes long strides until he stands right before me. I look up, my eyes scanning his broad chest, his lips, finally settling on his chocolate brown eyes. “Ana, baby, that is all in your head.” He reaches out and cups my cheek, running his thumb across my bottom lip. I instinctively lean into the intimate gesture, my eyes fluttering closed as an illicit spark flows between us, even though every fiber in me is telling me to pull away. “I love you. You are my entire life now.”
I swallow the lump in my throat. Maybe it is all in my head… I open my eyes and he is watching me closely. “I’m sorry.” I whisper, but I know the apology doesn’t reach my eyes, and I wonder if he notices. Judging by the lopsided grin that spreads across his face, I’m guessing not.
He pulls me tight against his chest, and I can hear his heart beating in the dark and silent room. I take a deep breath, inhaling the pure smell of Sam as he runs his hands up and down my spine. I open my eyes as my cheek is still pressed to the flat planes of his chest. This fire sprung inside of me, as an ember of recognition grows. There is a word for this feeling… jealousy. I pinch my eyes closed. The weight and reality of this emotion hitting me hard. I am jealous of Eva and I have no idea what to do about it.

Two cheeky excerpts from a piece I’m working on, it’s so close to being finished! Will probably post in next week or so 🤞🏻
From Never the Same, the story after TNA2. Featuring MC Katie Hide & Sofia Russo (with a little flashback comment from Robin Flores in italics).
Tumblr media
She scoffs, "He wasn't getting any from me..."
Katie all but laughs in her face in reply as the memory of what she saw in the bathroom at Sofia and Sam's rehearsal dinner flickers in front of her, etched forever in her mind.
"No shit, we all know who you were giving it to instead."
Sofia shoots daggers at Katie before raising her chin dismissively, choosing to ignore her remark and carry on.
"So of course he was bound to be flattered by any woman showing him the slightest bit of interest. He's a man after all and they're always ruled by their dicks rather than their heads."
The defiance in Sofia's tone grates on Katie.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Oh Jesus you're not going all Avengers on me are you? Are we going to have to stand together in skin tight leather suits? Don't get me wrong my ass would kill in one of those...and you'd actually be making a fantasy of mine come true if you wear one too!"
"I'll never admit this to anyone but I fear I may have misjudged your capabilities Katie."
"This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship..." She internally cringed as the line rolled off her lips. At least this quote was more likely to have been in a movie Sofia would actually know. Avengers seems unlikely.
"Let's not run before we can walk.”
With that, they clink their glasses together as Sophia pairs a wink with a conspiratorial smile, perhaps the first sincere facial expression she's ever bothered to offer Katie’s way.
Original characters: Katie Hide (MC), Sam Dalton, Vivienne Dalton, Mason Sr Dalton, Carter
New characters: Laney, Ryan
Content warning: Some light adult language
Summary: Nanny Katie Hide and her boss Sam Dalton finally take their relationship to the next step on the night of the gala, but just when they should be feeling elated, things spiral quickly. Can they get through the rest of the evening together now that things have changed for good?
- Bonus social edits at the end -
Tumblr media
Alone on the balcony, looking out over the city's twinkling lights, she should've been basking in the afterglow of the best sex of her life but instead she feels empty. Her resolve held strong in front of Sam as he skulked off seemingly full of regret but now, her mind races through every minute detail of what had just happened.
Instead of taking the time to carefully ingrain every delicious detail of their time together into her memory, she painfully second guessed every move, every touch, every whispered promise. Once her exhausted mind began to fray she decided to sweep the whole thing under the carpet determined to save face, for now. Collecting herself, she absentmindedly ran her fingers up and down her arms, goose bumps standing proud, finally giving in to the cold night air.
On her way back towards the ballroom, while wondering how the hell she was going to get through the rest of the evening, she prolongs her return to reality by ducking into one of the lavish bathrooms to freshen up.  The room is quiet, an older lady leaves as she enters, another younger girl, probably around her age, is refreshing her makeup by one of the opulent vanity's. She sits down on the plush velvet ottoman in the middle of the vanity area with a sigh, not really sure what to do next.
"Well you look like you've been through the ringer!"
Turning towards the kind voice, the girl who was doing her makeup, a warm glow pours out to her as the stranger looks her up and down with genuine concern. Her face is one of those which feels familiar, like someone she could’ve known her whole life. It is enough to encourage her to open up a little and feels like a relief to have someone to talk to after feeling so alone out on that balcony.
"I'm sort of having the best night of my life as well as the worst. And to top it all off I've left my purse in the main room..." She gestures towards her untidy hair and slightly smudged makeup by way of an explanation.
The stranger offers a knowing look in reply.
“So are you here with someone? Your dress is divine by the way."
Smoothing the front of her dress, Katie replies absentmindedly, "Oh no, I'm just here with my boss, filling in an empty seat at the last minute." Hesitant to share more with someone she'd just met, she kept the more intimate details to herself.
"Me too, well sort of. I'm a stylist, one of my clients insisted I join them to make sure they look perfect all night long, god forbid her dress creases when she sits down for dinner!" She waves Katie over to the vanity and the open make up case. "Here, use whatever you need." She continues watching as Katie gratefully grabs a brush and some powder. "I'm really just starting out but figure these sorts of events are great publicity if I can dress the right people. I mean they're all living on another planet of course but they love to be in the spotlight and gush about their outfits, which is great for me!"
The pair chat easily together for a while before Katie glances at the time on her phone screen realising she'd been gone much longer than anticipated. She’d enjoyed having an ally and getting her mind off the car crash of a moment with Sam, truth be told, she’d much rather stay here in the safety of her mirrored cave and the kindness of a stranger than plaster a smile on her face and return to the Dalton’s table. With a wistful smile she turns to the stranger.
"I suppose I should be getting back, although I can't say I'm looking forward to it."
"I'm Laney by the way." She holds her hand out to Katie and they share a gentle shake.
"I'm Katie. I've really enjoyed hiding out in here with you, thanks for everything." Leaving Laney to pack up the overly large purse full of beauty treasures, Katie heads back towards the bustling ballroom. Barely making it into the room, Laney breathlessly catches up to her holding out a business card.
"Hey, I thought maybe we could meet up for a coffee sometime, you know if you want to have someone in the real world to spend time with!" She points over to someone across the room and continues animatedly, "You said you went to NYIT right? I'm sure my friend Ryan would love to meet you too, he did his Grad course there and always loves a trip down memory lane!"
Taking the card, Katie’s eyes are drawn to Sam over Laney's shoulder. He looks just as he did before the balcony, the ever professional businessman, as if nothing had ever happened. He gives a slight tip of his head in Katie’s direction, motioning for her to join him back at the table.
The new friends share a quick hug promising to catch up soon and she makes her way over to Sam who won't quite meet her eye. Despite the frostiness between them, he's a gentleman at heart and doesn't think twice about pulling out her chair, tucking it in gently as she sits. As the bustle of dinner being served continues around them, the thorny silence between them grows thick with unspoken feelings.
After a whirlwind of Sam and his parents catching up over the exploits of various family friends and tales of the boys, Vivienne turns to smile at Katie.
"Now dear, we're being rude talking around you as though you're not here. Sam tells me you're quite the budding scientist yourself?"
She looks to Sam to see him offering a helpless smile and shrug of the shoulders and can’t help but wonder whether he’d shared anything about his previous employees with his mother, or if she was the first. As Katie pulls her eyes away from Sam’s, she pushes down all the feelings which bubbled up inside her and plasters on her most professional smile.
"Yes, Mrs Dalton, I have a Masters in Chemistry and up until recently was managing projects for Panacea Labs."
Being the expert that she is at reading people, Katie astutely notices how Mr Dalton’s ears prick, he clearly didn't know that there was more to her than being 'just a nanny', whatever that means.
"Please dear, you're practically family, call me Vivienne."
A warm glow fills her body at the thought of being accepted into the fold of the Dalton family. Smiling back at Vivienne, she continues to share stories of her experiences in the industry, her passion for science and her love for exploring through the twins eyes.
"Mickey and Mason are such a brilliant example of how a love of science can be developed at a young age. They're so curious and passionate about exploring, it's such a pleasure to be a part of."
Next to her, barely able to disguise the pride he feels for her, Sam tries his best to remain outwardly impassive while watching the rest of the table listen attentively, completely captivated by her storytelling. He'd meant it earlier on the balcony when he'd agreed that she was meant to be by his side, a partner not a secret he had to hide his feelings for. He just didn't know how to make it a reality, trapped within his own life. But in this moment, his feelings bubble to the surface and it takes everything he has not to take her in his arms in front of everyone and let them come flooding out for all to see.
After all, it wasn’t Katie’s fault that his true feelings for her hit him like a tonne of bricks earlier that evening while he watched her effortlessly talk Selene into keeping her shares. In front of his parents no less. Right there, everything he loves about her shone out for everyone to see and he realised he was deeply and helplessly in love. It just wasn’t with his fiancée. Hell that's the reason he took Katie out to the balcony in the first place, to steal a moment to share how he really feels but as always he was too much of a coward to do anything about it in fear or letting everyone else down and jeopardising his sons future.
He knows that the only way to try to push through it all is to detach himself from Katie as much as possible, even if it means becoming the bad guy. In his mind, she deserves better, she deserves the damn fairytale and that's just not something he's able to give.
As they move through the plentiful courses of dinner, Mason Sr continues to interrogate Katie on her knowledge and opinions of various scientific and business theories, although his directness falters as the meal goes on and they both seem to enjoy the lively debates. Vivienne occasionally interjects with questions of her own about Katie’s family, her life back in England and whether it's difficult to be far from home. To Katie, it almost feels like she’s on a 'meet the parents' date which in her mind could be going a lot worse.
When coffee is finally offered, Mason Sr stands abruptly, eyes focussed on Sam.
“Ladies, while this evening's discussions have been...interesting, I think it's time we get down to some business." He nods curtly at Sam before gesturing towards a quieter bar area off the back of the room.
Sam stands to follow him but not before turning to Katie and instinctively placing a hand on her shoulder. She involuntarily shudders at his touch as her mind races back to the last time they touched on the balcony.
"This shouldn't take too long, will you be ok here?"
"Of course she will darling, I'm not going to bite her!" Vivienne cuts in before she can reply. Sam nods in approval towards her and lingers for a moment before walking away to meet his father. Katie's shoulder still tingling at the memory of his touch.
Katie looks across the ballroom taking in the general splendour and jovial atmosphere while Vivienne takes the opportunity to really look at her, contemplating how much to share with her. After taking a few sips of coffee, she turns herself to fully face Katie and offers a warm smile.
"I can see why the boys are so taken with you...all of them."
The honesty of her comment takes Katie by surprise. Unsure how to respond, she slowly turns to meet Vivienne’s eye, raising her eyebrow slightly in question.
"You're all the things Sam said you were. He was right when he told me we'd get on well."
The intensity of Vivienne’s gaze is so strong Katie daren't look away.
"I want to thank you for everything you've done for them all. They've come alive again since having you in their life. Poor Sara was taken from him far too soon, from us all really...it was all so hard on Sam and the boys." She trails off clearly lost in memory. "I know he cares for you and wants you to feel part of the family."
“Shit” she thinks to herself. Feeling like a rabbit caught in headlights, Katie's mind races. Does she know? How can she, they've only met once before, surely that's not enough to make her suspicious?
"I think Sam's just taken pity on me because I'm so far from home and he knows I don't have any family around. He and the boys have been so gracious in making me feel welcome."
Hoping she sounds convincing she takes a sip of coffee, relishing the opportunity to hide her blushing cheeks behind the cup. Vivienne suddenly looks up with Katie follow her gaze over her shoulder. Behind her, Laney is standing with a cowboy-next-door handsome man in tow, a welcome interruption. His dirty blonde hair is slightly unkempt, his frame more lean than Sam's but he still carries an athletic look, he smiles charmingly at Katie.
“Excuse me" Laney directs to Vivienne before turning to speak to Katie. “This is my friend Ryan who I was telling you about earlier."
Katie reaches out to shake his hand which he is already holding out towards her.
"I hear you're a fellow NYIT grad? You look far too respectable to have hung out in the sort of dives I used to find myself in!"
"Try me..." she challenges with a twinkle in her eye.
Laney rolls her eyes with boredom and escapes, business card in hand, to fawn over an awkwardly dressed woman at another table.
"Would you like to dance? I promise not to break out the old NYIT match day chant moves!"
She can't help but laugh at his natural charm. After looking to Vivienne, who waves her hand in approval, she lets Ryan lead her out to the dance floor where they sway together at ease in each other's company reminiscing. It’s a far cry from the intimate dance with Sam earlier that evening, instead Katie could relax into it knowing that she wasn’t trying to hide anything, and it felt freeing.
As Sam's discussion, or more accurately argument, with his father comes to an end he heads back to the table where he notices his mother is sitting alone.
“Where's Katie?" He asks forgetting to hide the panic in his voice, worried for the second time that evening, after she had disappeared to the bathroom for half an hour, that Katie had thought better of compromising herself for him and fled the gala.
Vivienne nods towards the dance floor, Sam's eyes follow and a bolt of jealousy hits him right in the heart as he sees her in the arms of another man.
With a steely glare he starts towards her but is stopped by Vivienne's hand firmly holding him back by his arm.
“Leave her be, she's enjoying herself."
Letting out an almost inaudible sigh he sits down next to his mother but can't pull his eyes away, so enthralled that his mother's voice is almost a whisper in the background.
"She really is wonderful darling, I know even your father is impressed, of course he'll never say it." Her arm still resting on his, she studies Sam's face before continuing, "What a shame you’d not met her sooner.”
Allowing himself for a moment to hope that his mother's glowing reference suggests she is in approval of his relationship with Katie becoming something more, Sam smiles and leans forward ready to gush even more. He catches himself just in time as the ever repeating voices in his head remind him of his responsibility and everyone else's expectations of him, instead he brings it back to the boys.
"Yes she's brilliant with Mason and Mickey, they're lucky to have her."
Dancing and talking together with Ryan, Katie had almost forgotten about Sam and their earlier tryst on the balcony, grateful for the distraction and if she was being honest the attention. It's not every day that she goes to the effort of dressing up at the last minute and schmoozes the un-scmoozable to help her sort-of-boyfriend look good, it's nice to have someone sweep her off her feet and put her first for once.
"Your boyfriend doesn't seem too happy about us dancing together" Ryan nods towards Sam who is trying to get their attention, his parents behind him appear to be getting ready to leave.
"He's not my boyfriend."
Ryan's eyes widen sensing an opportunity. “Well I guess that's good news for me...can I call you sometime, take you out for dinner?"
She drops her gaze, shaking her head slightly.
“I'm sorry, I don't think it's a good idea..." trailing off, he gently lifts her chin to look up at him.
"But you're single...?"
"No, I...it's...it's complicated" she stutters while looking over his shoulder at Sam, who looks less than thrilled.
"Well, if you change your mind, Laney has my number." With that, he kisses her hand and watches the silk of her gown cling to her hips as she walks away.
Returning to the table, Mason Sr takes Katie’s hand and shakes it almost warmly.
“Pleasure to see you again Katie. Excellent damage control with Selene earlier...very impressive."
He moves to Sam, impassively shaking his hand as Vivienne envelopes her in a hug, kissing each cheek.
"Wonderful to see you again dear, give those grandsons of mine one of these from me!"
Katie smiles tenderly back at her, nodding in agreement.
After the Dalton's leave, Katie and Sam remain at the table, sipping their drinks in awkward silence, steadily interrupted by acquaintances of Sam's wanting to talk business. Finally, noticing Katie’s arm propping up her tired head, Sam stands.
“I think that's enough shop talk for one night, let's get you home."
Waiting for the limo to pull to the front of the building Sam notices her shiver in the cold night air. He takes off his jacket and wraps it around her shoulders, the most contact they’ve had all evening since being intertwined on the balcony together. His gaze lingers on hers, neither able to look away. She tries to read his thoughts as she looks deep into his eyes but all she sees is a muddle of pain, confusion and longing. It doesn't make her feel any better.
"Mr Dalton..." the driver says with a small cough as he stands by the open limo door.
Sam pulls away and walks her over to the limo with his hand hovering behind the small of her back, not daring to touch. Once settled in their seats it doesn't take long for the gentle motion of the car to send Katie to sleep, her head lulling and dropping onto Sam's shoulder.
It takes everything he has for him not to wrap his arms around her, his mind conflicted thinking of the nights events. The incredible connection they shared on the balcony, the fire within him burning hotter and brighter than ever before, his mother's glowing review, hell even his father had been impressed and suggested during their conversation in the bar that Katie’s role within the Dalton empire might be wasted as just a nanny. But none of these thoughts could quite suppress his feelings of guilt at falling for another woman, his responsibility to his sons, the business and their legacies. At least not in his mind.
Back in the penthouse, Sam makes his way into the open plan living area to find, thinking him for his help with the boys. Katie hangs back, not wanting to make small talk in front of Carter, who is incredibly astute and would no doubt piece together that things were not as they seemed.
"Miss Hide, you're a vision!"
Walking towards the elevator, Carter beams at her like a proud dad seeing his daughter on her wedding day.
“I didn't get the chance to see you before you left, my my..."
"Thank you Carter. And thank you for watching the boys, I hope they weren't too much trouble?!"
He taps his nose, keeping secret whatever mischief they got up to that evening. She smiles back at him knowingly as he steps into the elevator and the doors close.
As she turns back towards the living room she is halted by Sam standing right in front of her, so close, she almost crashes into him. Sheepishly she hands him his jacket as he offers a bottle of water in exchange.
‘You should never go to bed dehydrated" he blurts out, trying to fill the gaping silence.
“Sam...."
"Goodnight Katie, thank you for your help this evening, I appreciate you coming."
Unable to muster up enough energy to argue push any further, Katie drops her gaze to the floor as she shakes her head disappointedly. She walks away without a word, her heart aching more than she thought possible.
Sorry for being MIA lately, life is kicking my butt right now!
I have a billion different fic chapters on the go which if I’m being honest are unlikely to be finished anytime soon. So instead, I’ve been putting together some social media posts/text convos so tell the story.
I’ll write a head cannon of my TNA universe soon but for now, enjoy these little gems between MC Katie & Sam, MC Katie & Robin and Robin & Sam.
The story for these posts goes....a few months after TNA book 1, once everyone has made peace, Robin (after being persuaded by Katie) gets a dog (named Rusty/Rust) as a means to stave off his constant string of one night stands and undisclosed fear of being alone. Of course, being the nurturing soul and dog lover that Katie is, she sees Rusty as much as she can and he in return adores her. Anyway, this particular weekend, while Robin is busy with a work project, Katie and Sam take Rusty with them and the boys to Sam’s parents in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Book: The Nanny Affair
Characters: Sam, Ana Schuyler (MC), Mason, Mickey, Robin
Pairing: Sam Dalton (male) x Ana Schuyler (MC)
Rating: 18+
Content Warning: Adult Language but so frickin fluffy
Summary: The vows and ceremony are finally underway.
Word Count: 3388
All characters belong to Pixelberry except for a cross over with The Hunted Series by Ivy Smoak and my OCs
A/N: You guys, this chapter has been a long time coming, and I have officially decided to end this series with this chapter, but don't you worry- I have so many plans for Ana, Sam, and even Robin. This chapter is all the fluff I hope you can handle, and I really enjoyed writing about the start of this love story. Thank you for the ones that have stuck with me on this writing journey. I hope you stick around for the rest. A big shout out to @txemrn for always being my number one cheerleader and helping me through the places I got stuck even if you don’t like Sam 🤪
And with that, I present to you, the finale of It Goes On...
My eyes slowly roam the curves of my reflection in the ornately framed full length mirror, lingering on every detail of the Pnina Tornai lace gown. My fingers reach up and delicately trace the outline of the emeralds and diamonds that lay on my neck. The conversations of my nearest and dearest friends seem to fade away in the final moments before I become a Dalton. I take a deep breath, a smile spreads across my stained lips.
“This is really happening.” I say breathlessly.
“Yes, beautiful, this is really happening.” Jenny is at my side with a glass of champagne twirling around in her manicured fingers. “And it’s almost time.” She reaches up and straightens a lock of my hair.
I walk towards the curtained window that is the only thing that separates us from our loved ones that mingle on the other side. I pull back the sheer white fabric and peek out, everyone has been seated, the St. Patrick's Cathedral standing tall over the garden that is adorned with greenery and white roses. The ivory spires a stark contrast against the blue of the sky.  I hold my breath as Sam, Mason, and Mickey emerge from a side door, Sam’s eyes find mine through the window with a lopsided grin. I turn back towards the sound of Justin’s voice as he claps his hands.
“It’s time, ladies. Bridesmaids, follow me.”
Jenny ghosts a kiss across my cheek. “See you out there.” She turns and follows Justin out of the room.
“Don’t lock your knees, a dear friend told me on my wedding day, it makes you faint.” Penny gives me a quick hug. “You look beautiful, Ana.”
“Thanks for the advice.” I laugh as she steps away, following Jenny. I turn to Monica, who is dabbing at her eyes with a tissue.
“Don’t you dare start crying, Monica.”
She gives me a rueful smile. “I’m sorry. I’m just so happy for you. I can’t believe after everything we’ve been through together, that I am standing here as your maid of honor on your wedding day.” She walks up to me grabbing both of my hands. “I love you so much.”
“Now, Ms. Maid of Honor.” Justin chimes.
“I love you, Moni.”
She wraps me in a quick hug before she walks out of the room. I peak out of the window again, watching as Monica takes Robin’s arm and they make their way down the aisle, a blush on Monica’s cheeks. I internally roll my eyes before I hear a soft knock on the door behind me.
I turn and I see my father.
“I was told to come get you.” His face lights up in a smile. “You look so beautiful, Apple.”
“Thanks, Dad.” I walk over to him and gently take his offered arm. My eyes linger on the lace detail of my dress, until I feel his eyes on me.  I lift my gaze until our matching emerald eyes meet.
“My dear, sweet, Anastasia.” He pauses as he dabs at the tears that are welling in his eyes, his voice soft. “I am the luckiest man alive to have you as my daughter. I am so unbelievably proud of you. You will have everything you want in this world. I knew it from when I first held you in my arms. I knew you would take it all, and hold it tight. You are one of the strongest people I will ever have the pleasure of knowing. Never let anyone tell you otherwise.”
I felt the tears in my eyes. “I love you, Dad.”
“I love you, Ana.”
“It’s time.” Justin says as he pops his head into the room with a smile.
“Well, shall we?” My dad asks with a grin.
“Let’s do it.” I smile up at him as we walk out of the door arm in arm. I could feel the small tremors in my fathers arm as the aisle and all of our guests came into view. Everything fades away when I see him though, standing at the end of the aisle under a white rose covered arch, his smile wider than I have ever seen it.
At this moment, I know that this is love. I can feel it in every single fiber of my being. Sam’s smile grounds me, as my father and I walk down the aisle together. We come to a stop and my dad turns me towards him.
“Anastasia, I love you.” He leans in and presses a soft kiss to my cheek.
“I love you, Dad.”
He squeezes my hand one last time before I turn around and I take Sam’s outstretched hand, that all too familiar electricity arced between us, the instinctive recognition that we had been made to fit together perfectly. I look down at the twins that are standing on either side of him and they flash me a big smile and a thumbs up. My gaze draws back to Sam’s dark eyes as I step up and he squeezes both of my hands in his.
I do not hear a word the pastor says as I get lost in his eyes, noticing how the sun reflects the specks of gold. My eyes drift down to his lips as the corners lift up in a small smile. He turns away from me for a moment and I see Robin hand him something. When he turns back towards me, his face has softened.
“Anastasia,” he says as he slides my wedding band onto my finger. He pauses for a second and I watch his Adam's apple rise and fall. "You once asked me if I was a believer in fate. I wasn't. But I am now because of you. When you walked into my office I had no idea that my life was about to change forever. Your persistence and stubbornness and brilliance and beauty brought me to my knees after only knowing you for a few months. And now here we are. I know that we can get through anything together, I know that we're strong enough together.
"I'm crazy about you and I can't wait for our future. I can't wait for our lives together with you as my wife. You make me want to be a better man for you. You are the air I breathe. You are the dreams I dream. You are the light of my life. I'm consumed by your brilliance and beauty, inside and out. I'm the lucky one. And I don't know why you picked me. But I'm grateful every day. When I wake up every morning and see your face, I'm reminded that I am the luckiest man alive. All that is mine is now yours. I give you my hand, my heart, and my love from this moment on as long as we both shall live.”
I try and fail to blink back tears.
“Don’t cry, my love.”  He reaches up and runs his thumb softly across my cheek. “I hate seeing you cry.”
“They are happy tears.” I laugh softly. I take a deep breath before I turn around and Monica hands me Sam’s wedding band. I tuck it into my palm before I reach out for his hands, our fingers intertwined again in front of us. His thumb rubs the back of my hand and a sense of calm rushes over me. I get lost in his magnetic brown eyes before I speak the truest words I have ever spoken.
“I will spend my whole life loving you, Samuel.” I pause as I slide his wedding band onto his finger, goosebumps rising on my skin. I take a deep breath and my eyes lock on his. “There is no me without you. You have been my rock, my safe place, since the moment we first met. I knew, in that moment, that my heart was yours and yours was mine. Sam, I love you with everything that I am. When I look at you, I still get stars in my eyes. I don’t know how it’s possible, but I love you more and more each day. You have brought more joy into my life than I ever thought was possible, between you and your incredibly loving boys, my arms are full, but my heart is fuller.
“You have consumed my every thought, my every dream. You have pierced my soul. I want to wake up beside you every morning. I want to spend every evening looking at you at the dinner table. I want to fall asleep next to you every night. You are the source of my joy, the center of my world, and the whole of my heart. I love you, Sam and every fiber of me I give to you for as long as we both shall live.”
Sam takes his bottom lip between his teeth as his eyes shine with unshed tears. He shakes his head slightly, whispering a silent, ‘god, I love you’.
“Samuel, do you take Anastasia to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold until death do you part?” The pastor says.
Sam smiles down at me. “I do.”
“Anastasia, do you take Samuel as your lawfully wedded husband? To have and to hold until death do you part?”
“I do.” I can barely contain the excitement in my voice.
“Then by the power vested in me by the state of New York, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride.”
“Finally, you’re mine.” He smiles and pulls me into his arms pressing a heated kiss to my lips as our guests erupt in cheers. To hell with etiquette. I grab his lapels and deepen the kiss as his hands slide down my body pulling me against his chest. Whistles sounded from where our bridal party was standing, but I didn’t care. When we finally pull away from each other I can feel the blush that has creeped up my cheeks. I reach up and touch my lips as Sam looks down at me. My chest tightens at the look he is giving me and in this moment, I am absolutely, irrevocably, happy.
“We’re married.”
“Yes, we are.” He bends down and scoops me up in his arms, carrying me down the aisle as I laugh. I caught my mom's eye as tears fell down her face. Mickey and Mason run up besides Sam, and together as a family we walk into the groom suite. He sets me down on my feet and I take a step back, allowing me to kneel down and pull Mason and Mickey into my sides for a hug.
“Mom, that was so pretty.” Mason’s smile was wide.
“Yeah, it was perfect.” Mickey nodded with a matching smile.
“Oh boys, thank you.” I looked back and forth between their handsome, smiling, faces and pulled them back into a hug. “I love you boys, so much.”
“We love you, too.”
A soft knock interrupts the moment and I look over to see Robin standing in the door with a smile. “I was told to come and get you for photos.”
I look back and forth between the twins, “Are you boys ready to go take some pictures?”
“Only if we get to do one goofy one.” Mickey chimes.
“I would expect nothing less.” I say standing up.
They turn and run out the door and I take Sam’s hand, twisting our fingers together. He leans down and presses a soft kiss to my lips. “Let’s do this, Mrs. Dalton.”
“I really like the sound of that.”
“Me too, baby.”
***
“Ladies and Gentleman, may I present to you, for the first time, Mr. and Mrs. Dalton!”
I scrunch my face up with a smile, feeling giddy at the fact that I am officially his and he is officially mine. Sam grabs my hand and holds it in the air as we walk back out to the garden together to the raucous applause and cheers from our guests. The space that once held our ceremony had been transformed for our reception, and I made a mental note to thank Justin, because it was spectacular.
Sam gives me a twirl before guiding me over to our sweetheart table. He pulls out my chair and I flash him a grateful smile when he sits down next to me. I hear the clinking of silverware on a glass and I look over to see Monica giving me a coy smile. I lean in and press my lips to Sams, our eyes lingering on each other as we slowly break away.
I hear someone clear their throat over the speaker and Sam and I turn to see Robin holding a mic and grinning at us. I cast a nervous glance over at Sam.
“He better not say anything embarrassing.” I whisper.
“Knowing him he is definitely going to say something embarrassing, and I’m probably going to have to apologize.” He sets his lips in a thin line as Robin begins his speech.
“How’s everyone doing tonight?” He pauses for effect with a lopsided grin. “You know, Sam isn’t my brother by blood, but him and I grew up inseparable until his parents were gracious enough to take me in. Him and I have been through a lot together and for the longest time, no one knew Sam like I did. Now? It’s a different story. The lovely Ana is probably the only person at this point that knows Sam better than I do. She’s the only person to really get him to break down his walls. It’s probably the fact that she is so damn beautiful.”
I spit the champagne that I was sipping back into the glass. What in the actual fuck, Rob. A few people laughed nervously, my eyes flicked to Mason and Mickey who were talking between each other and fortunately didn’t hear it.
“Or maybe it was the whole boss/hot nanny thing, I mean sneaking around, the forbidden aspect of it. It’s hot, who could resist? I know we can joke about it now-“
Sam clears his throat and I know I am blushing furiously.
Robin laughs. “Sorry, Sam, but honestly, anyone who knows these two can tell it’s a deeper connection than anything physical. I’ve never seen a couple that cares so unconditionally for each other. I knew when these two met, that it was going to be impossible to tear them apart. Ana, I love you like a sister and Sam, I love you man. I look up to you and I am so happy that you finally found someone that makes you as happy as you deserve to be. You two are adored by all and I wish you a lifetime of happiness. Cheers.”
Sam smiles and shakes his head as we clink our glasses together. “I’m so sorry.” He leans down and  whispers in my ear.
“Well that’s going to be hard to follow.” Monica steps up and takes the mic from Robin who flashes her a wink and she blushes. “For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Monica. I have been Ana’s best friend since we were… hmm 3?” She pauses as there is a small laugh. “We were inseparable until our passions took us to different grad schools, and then she moved to New York. I still remember the day that Ana first told me about Sam, I also remember the obstacles that faced these two if he really was as special as she said he was.
“These two have faced insurmountable obstacles, but have come out on top. Ana. You are my best friend, the sister that I never had, and you deserve the absolute best. I know without a doubt that Sam is that for you. You each bring out the best parts of each other. And I am so lucky to be a witness to your love story. Sam, you have proven to be worthy of my best friend, treating her with the love and respect that she deserves, make sure that never changes. With that, let’s raise our glasses to the happy couple, cheers to Ana and Sam.”
I give Monica a grateful smile as she raises her glass at me. The rest of dinner passes by in a blur of joyful laughs and tears. Mason Senior's speech brings smiles to everyone’s face as he recalls an embarrassing story about Sam, and after my fathers speech, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room. Sam's hand remained firmly in my lap as his fingers toyed with the rings on my finger. Our occasional stolen glances were only outnumbered by the delicate kisses we shared. Just when I didn’t feel like my heart could get any fuller, he would look at me like that, and my chest would tighten.
When the live band signals the start of the dances, a tinge of sadness hits me as I realize this perfect night is inching closer to its conclusion. I look over at Sam, taking his offered hand with a grateful smile. He leads me onto the dance floor, lifting his arm and twirling me gracefully into his strong chest as the live band begins to play our song. The smell of his cologne, the warmth from his body, and the ethereal atmosphere, make me feel like I am living in a dream.
The band's singer croons out the lyrics to Can’t Help Falling In Love and my heart feels like it's about to burst. I lean back slightly so I can look up into his eyes. “Today is perfect.” I reach up and cup his cheek.
“Today is the best day of my life.” He responds as he leans down and presses a kiss to my forehead.
I rest my cheek against his chest, as he softly sings the lyrics.
“Like a river flows, surely to the sea, darling so it goes somethings are meant to be...”
He lifts his hand and twirls me around again before dipping me and bringing me tight to his chest again.
“So take my hand, take my whole life too, for I can’t help falling in love with you.” He sings against my lips, our swaying long since forgotten as everything else fades away.
As the sweet melody fades away, everyone erupts in cheers and whistles, but my gaze lingers on his deep brown eyes.
“I love you, Sam.” I whisper.
“I love you, Ana.” He whispers back.
Mason and Mickey are at our sides a moment later, and the band starts an upbeat version of ‘You’ll Be in My Heart’. I grab Mason’s hand and spin him around. The sound of his laughter rings out over the music as we dance as a family of four.
***
I close my eyes and focus on the steady beat of his heart. The sounds of the city far below us, as we slowly sway to a rhythm only in our minds.
“Well, I think today could not have been any more perfect.” His voice was low.
I look up into his dark eyes as a gentle smile plays on his lips, his fingers trace delicate circles across the back of my neck.
“It was absolutely perfect.” I smile and rest my cheek back on his chest.
I look around the now-empty rooftop garden, clinging to the final moments of my wedding day, as sweet memories flash through my mind.
“You are the most sensational woman I have ever laid eyes on, and I cannot believe that you are finally all mine.”
I sigh. “Mrs. Dalton has a great ring to it.”
He wraps his arms around my shoulders and gives me a squeeze.
Movement at the edge of the garden catches my attention and I see Mickey stepping out onto the rooftop.
“Mickey.” Robin and Monica appear behind him and he ushers Mickey back inside. “Not tonight, buddy.” I hear Robin murmur as he puts his arm around Mickey’s shoulder. I flash Robin a grateful smile and he winks, disappearing behind the curtained window.
“So what’s next Mr. Dalton?” I ask as I lean away from him and look up into his deep brown eyes.
His hands drop down to the small of my back, pulling my hips into his.
“Forever.”
Part Three
As the newest bar on the New York social scene, Atlas had drawn quite a crowd. Hopeful revellers huddle together in the queue outside teased by the sound of merriment within each time the door opens for one of the guest list elite. Katie tentatively approaches the doorman, politely name dropping her way in, wondering to herself in disbelief how this is in fact her life.
Once inside, the unmistakable energy of Jenny and the gang pulls her towards their table in the middle of the room, a melting pot of silken hair, sequins and stilettos, it's hard not to be captivated by the glamorous group she calls her friends.
As she cautiously makes a beeline for the table Jenny notices her approaching, her face lighting up in recognition of her friend. Looking effortlessly edgy as usual, her short dark hair matches the black silk tank top tucked into a feathered black mini skirt. She eyes Katie and unapologetically wolf whistles in her direction.
With her new found confidence, Katie removes her jacket and saunters over to her friends, inwardly basking in the attention of several male pairs of eyes drinking her in along the way. While skimming through the crowd, a blush spreads delicately across her neck and cheeks as she feels one pair of eyes in particular playing close attention. Before she can take a good look around she's embraced by an overly enthusiastic Jenny, almost knocking the wind out of her.
Grinning sincerely back at Jenny, she then moves to Lucinda, Serena and Tess in turn, hugging them tightly and instantly feeling herself relax more than she has done in months, all memories of the drama of her new life checked at the door.
When she had first moved from England for her grad programme, Katie met Jenny almost immediately. One unsuspecting Sunday morning, having escaped the deafening throbbing of heavy bass coming through the wall she shared with her neighbour, Katie was in need of a quiet space to seek refuge and study. She came across an unimposing coffee shop a few blocks away and was immediately drawn to the homey interior as she gazed through the window. As she stepped in, calm washed over her, it felt like home. Settled with her head in her books, it wasn't long before a tornado of colour, energy and expletives tore its way across the room towards her. Jenny.
Taken aback by the intrusion, Katie sat in dismay as this whirlwind of a person rambled on about needing some kind of cover story for being there as her ex sat at the other end of the room with a decidedly less chaotic redhead in his arms. Katie graciously agreed to play along and let Jenny sit with her. It wasn't long before the ex was forgotten as the two women got caught up in conversation, the more they learned about each other the more they found that despite being complete opposites, they blended effortlessly. From that day on, Jenny had taken Katie under her wing and the rest, as they say, is history.
A few minutes after settling on the tall metal stools at the pristine granite topped table, a bucket of Dom Perignon on ice arrives along with 5 glasses. The group look to one another, perplexed, nobody owning up to the extravagant order.
"With compliments of Mr Dalton..." the bartender explains before turning to head back to the heaving bar.
With only Jenny knowing the truth about her as yet un-named relationship with Sam, the rest of the girls just assume it's part of his flashy, rich guy MO, unaware that there could be any other meaning to this gesture than of him having the means to do something nice for his hard working nanny. Jenny on the other hand is about as subtle as a brick and leans in immediately, at least with the decency to lower her voice to a whisper.
"Someone's wanting to impress your friends...and it's working!!"
As Katie throws daggers at Jenny in response, she can't stop her lips from curling in amusement. Turning to take one of the glasses and join in with their toast to friendship, she feels a warmth radiating from her heart reminding of the incredible man waiting for her at home.
After a couple of hours of conversation and countless cocktails, the friends make their way down the stairs to the packed club in the basement, the chic modern décor highlighted by atmospheric blue lighting illuminating the room.
As she slips through the throngs of people to the middle of the dance floor Katie once again feels like someone is watching but can't pinpoint where they might be in the crowd, instead shrugging it off and throwing herself into dancing with the girls.
Unbeknown to her, the pair of dazzling green eyes which she felt boring into her belong to a very familiar face, still watching with a bemused smile as she dances sultrily to the rhythm of the music.
Completely entranced and thoroughly enjoying the view, Robin, who had been leaning against one of the VIP booths at the back of the room with a drink in hand, can't help but pull his phone out and capture the moment on camera.
His favourite past time of getting one over on his semi-brother had never been easier since meeting Katie. He'd quickly realised that flirting with her was a sure fire way to get under Sam's skin. Without a second thought, his fingers get to work tapping away on his phone's screen. As expected, a barrage of messages are swiftly returned warning him against doing anything remotely 'Robin'.
Rolling his eyes and with a heightened sense of determination, he pockets his phone and downs the rest of his drink licking the lingering taste of whiskey from his lips. He has no intention of listening to his brother's warning to stay away, after all Sam isn't here and surely what he doesn't know won't hurt him.
Completely oblivious to him moving towards her, he cuts through the crowed with laser precision until he's standing a hairs breath away from the delicious porcelain skin of her back. Her cheeks once again tingle with blush and the hairs on the back of her neck stand to attention as she feels the same, now familiar, gaze upon her once more. This time the intensity courses through her body, urging her to turn around.
Cautiously spinning on her heel, a short gasp stifled by a giggle escapes her as her eyes lock on Robin's mischievous grin. He beams at her, challenging her as his hands reach shamelessly for her waist.
"You look amazing out here," he quips, "but I think this song sounds better when you're dancing with someone."
Her cocktail induced daze prevents her from thinking about objecting. Instead, rising to his challenge, she throws him a playful smile and turns back around, pressing her hips into his crotch and swaying seductively to the music.
His hands delicately slide up from her waist, his fingertips stroking the bare skin of her back before caressing her neck and finally moving up her arms to meet with her hands which skim through the air as she sways. Their fingers interlock as he pulls her arms back down to her hips, spinning her round to face him, both breathless.
Instinctively she throws her arms around his neck while his swiftly fall to the small of her back, igniting small sparks up and down her spine.
Robin can't quite believe his luck and thanks his lucky stars that he accepted the last minute invitation to join some old friends at the hottest new bar in town, when what he had really wanted to do after his long day was go home and order pizza.
They move to the music together for a few songs, comfortable with each other's presence and both enjoying the close attention they so rarely receive from anyone else.
Perhaps it's because of their shared experience of looking in on the Dalton's world from the sidelines, but there's something so familiar and natural about being this close to Robin and a kind of ease she's never felt with any man before.
Sure, Sam insists that there is something real between them, she feels it too and their undeniable magnetism between proves there's a connection. But he's never committed 100% to her, at the end of each day he still goes to bed engaged to someone else and she can't help sometimes feeling like she's just an observer to his life.
Lost in their blissful cocoon, it isn't until another pair of hands snake around her waist that she is reminded of where they are. Warm breath from lipgloss stained lips tickles her ear causing her to take a step back from Robin, sobering her to their surroundings.
"Babe, we're heading over to the bar for a refresh, time to leave lover boy!"
Jenny winks at Robin, unapologetically looking him over like he's a piece of meat she wants to devour. She clearly doesn't realise that 'lover boy' is in fact Sam's brother, a fact which Katie doesn't intend to share. She can only imagine the probing that would follow if Jenny knew the truth.
"I'll be right there."
She offers a gentle push to Jenny's rear, encouraging her to move on. Fortunately she complies and slinks off towards the bar, not before giving an impressed nod, clearly approving of Katie's dancing partner.
Turning back to Robin, the space between them has grown and the anticipation in the air dissipated as they reluctantly realise their time together has come to an end.
Without missing a beat, Robin flashes a devilish smile as he steps close once again, reaching for her hand, bringing it up to his lips for a soft kiss.
"Until next time Katie..."
He shifts even closer causing her heart to skip a beat. His hand caressing her cheek as it slides through her delicate tresses tilting her head upwards to meet his gaze. His eyes bore into hers for what fees like an eternity before his lips tantalisingly brush against her ear.
"Unless you want to take this back to my place?"
Her breath catches as a warm glow rushes through her veins. The question hangs in the air around them like a fog clouding her judgement.
Of the two brothers, Robin is by far the easier choice, he is after all available without any strings attached.
His stature is much the same as Sam's, his skin slightly lighter, with a similar warm tone. But the eyes....those dazzling emerald green eyes which she could get lost in, framed by delicate laughter lines painted across his beautiful face. His relaxed demeanour and ability to always smile no matter what is going on around him is infectious.
Yes, being with Robin would be easier, life simpler and undoubtedly endlessly fun but as she stares back into those hypnotising green eyes, their foreheads touching, she realises with a pang in her heart that it undeniably belongs to someone else.
In defeat she licks her lips, a small movement which immediately captures Robin's attention, and shakes her head in reply.
"Oh Robin, as tempting as that sounds, I think we'd be wise to go out separate ways tonight."
He returns her smile with a soft kiss on the cheek.
"Can't blame a guy for trying. I guess I'll just have to wait until next time"
Winking, he slips away into the crowd like a ghost and for a moment she wonders whether he was even there at all.
After making her way back to the penthouse in a daze, Katie gingerly steps out of the elevator, tiptoeing carefully down the hall. Her heart skips a beat as she catches sight of Sam fast asleep on the couch.
She can't help but smile to herself as her eyes trace the outline of his sleeping body, that magnetism she so often feels when she’s around him pulling her across the room until she's standing over him.
He looks beautiful, peaceful, almost vulnerable. She realises she's never seen him sleep before and hopes it’s not too creepy to stay and watch him for a few minutes as she slinks down to sit on the footstool between the couch and the coffee table, her knees brushing against Sam's thighs.
Lying on his side, his strong arms are folded across his chest as if protecting himself like armour. His chiselled chest gently rises and falls with each breath, eyelashes fluttering delicately as he dreams, his lips slightly apart, tempting her to kiss them.
She leans closer to him, elbows resting on her bare knees. A curl of his dark silken hair has fallen in front of his eyes and she tenderly stroke it back across his forehead and he involuntarily smiles at her touch.
Staring down at this beautiful man a realisation rushes into her mind like a car speeding out of control. She is completely and utterly, hopelessly in love with Sam Dalton.
Mind slightly fuzzy, her cocktail induced confidence and new realisation makes her brave, encouraging her to gently press her lips to his while cupping his face with her warm hand. He responds immediately by sliding his arm around her waist, kissing back softly, still half asleep. She leans closer still, lips grazing the top of his ear, her voice a whisper.
"I'm home, it's late, you should've gone to bed."
His eyes flicker open, adoration pouring over her, his hand still clinging to her waist.
"I couldn't sleep until I knew you were home safe"
Her lips curl in amusement. "You do realise I’ve just woken you up right?!”
Laughing softly to himself, he sits up so his knees are touching hers and their eyes lock while they share a secret smile reserved only for each other. He runs his hand through his hair and checks the time on his Rolex.
"Oh man, I didn't realise it had gotten so late....did you have a good time with your friends?"
"It was amazing. I miss seeing them...as much as I love being here with you and the boys I've realised it's still good for me to have some time for myself."
He softly skims his hands up her thighs, his slightest touch stoking the fire within.
"Of course, I want that for you too."
Leaning in to one another, the air crackles between them, their night apart building as much desire as any foreplay. As the space between them closes, their breath tangles together. The drumming of their heartbeats the only sound they can hear, until the shrill cry of Katie’s phone cuts through the air.
Pausing with their foreheads resting together they both turn to stare at it willing it to stop, but the phones persistence echoes around the room as it continues to ring.
"That'll be Jenny checking I've got home...I'd better answer or she'll keep ringing." She sighs, hesitantly pulling away from Sam while lifting the phone to her ear.
"Hey Jen.”
Sam’s whole body slouches, visibly defeated. He shakes his head before lightly kissing her cheek as he stands, the moment regrettably over.
"Goodnight Katie" he sighs quietly, so only she hear.
Jenny animatedly chatters on about the hot cab driver who asked for her number, though Katie barely hears her as she zones out watching Sam's back retreating to the boys room to check on them before he goes to bed.
"Goodnight Sam" she sighs in resignation, her words swallowed by the now empty room.
Part Two -
When Friday evening swiftly arrives, Katie tried to distract herself from the excitement building within by throwing herself into her love of cooking and creating an overly elaborate meal for the boy's dinner. While they don't particularly need a full roast dinner with all the trimmings, she's in far too good a mood to care. As is usually the norm when she cooks dinner, the boys sit at the counter half watching - half playing, keen to be around her as much as possible.
There's a certain calm which they feel when they're with her, safe and warm. They'd spent so much time bounced between family, babysitters and tutors over the last few years they relished the opportunity to be around someone so steady and secure, plus she just effortlessly understood them and knew how to put their needs first.
"Suck it Mason!"
Mickey's cheer startles her from her culinary daze as he slams down the last of the cards in his hand with vigour, winning the nail-biting game of snap the boys are playing.
"Mickey, language...please."
Katie glares at him to show that she's serious but can't completely stifle the grin underneath, threatening to give away the fact that she's humoured by the intensity of their game.
Of the twins, Mickey has always been the most energetic and animated, he rarely holds anything back and doesn't take any prisoners. Mason on the other hand is a much more sensitive soul, wise beyond his seven years and far more observant about the world around him. They're a real split of Sam's personality and a constant reminder of all the things she loves about him.
Before Mickey can apologise, the elevator dings sparking confusion in the kitchen. Katie pulls her phone out of her jeans back pocket to check the time. 5 o'clock on the dot. Equally puzzled and completely in sync with one another, the boys hold a ceasefire in their game as they all turn to look to the hallway waiting to catch a glimpse of the intruder.
Her heart flips as Sam saunters into the room, eyes sparkling and a wide smile already on his face as he takes in the scene before him. He couldn't remember the last time he'd made it home this early, but something had changed recently, something which made him long to be at home, long to play with his boys, long to live a little. And then he locked eyes on that something. Katie.
"Well if it isn't my three-favourite people."
The sincerity in his voice paired with the adoring look he gives is enough to make Katie's knees go weak. The boys are clearly oblivious to the fact that his fiancé should probably be above her on his list of favourite people but in that moment she's happy to take the compliment, nonetheless.
"What are you doing home so early?"
Sam makes his way over to the kitchen, ruffling the boy’s hair before slipping casually onto the bar stool next to Mickey. The boys in return beam at him, revelling in the novelty of having two grown-ups to shower them with attention.
"You didn't think I'd forget your big night out, did you? I wanted to make sure you had plenty of time to get yourself ready without having to chase these two clowns around."
He winks at her before turning back to the boys. Mason throws Sam a look of mock offence at being labelled a clown, Mickey on the other hand smiles proudly, totally owning it.
After putting the boys to bed, Sam settles himself in the living area, pacing around unable to stay still. Nervous energy tingles through his veins as he waits impatiently for Katie to emerge, already letting his mind run away with the less than innocent images of her in his head of how she'll look when she appears.
Nothing could've prepared him for what he was about to see as she emerged like a butterfly from its cocoon, transformed.
With the wind knocked out of him, his eyes trail over her capturing every detail to recall later. He admires her delicate curves wrapped in a form fitting deep blue sequinned mini dress, so dark it almost looks black until it catches the light and a blue hue shimmers, just like when the moon hits the sea on a clear night. He immediately wishes he could trail his hands along the flimsy spaghetti straps falling gently over her shoulders, crossing over her back revealing the barely-there rear of the dress.
As she confidently flicks her golden blonde hair it smoothly drips over her shoulders like honey, long soft curls bouncing just below her breasts. Her sweeping fringe ever so slightly obscuring her intoxicating blue eyes which sparkle back at him full of conviction.
The whole look gives her an air of unfaltering confidence which he's never seen on her before. This may be the most turned on he's ever been from just looking at her, so much so that his hands seek refuge in his pockets, untrusted not to grab her at the first opportunity.
"Wow, you look incredible!" He throws her a mischievous smile and continues, "If I'd known you'd look this good I wouldn't have been so eager for you to have the night off!"
Noticing the fire in his eyes, she feels conflicted as she allows herself to imagine what might happen if she were to stay at home tonight. The air crackles between them as they hold each other's gaze a little longer than they should.
"Thank you, I'd forgotten how much I like dressing up and looking good!"
The fire in his eyes extinguishes and leaves behind warm sincerity, a small smile crosses his lips as he finally builds the courage to move closer.
"You always look good. I'm particularly fond of your jeans and t-shirt look, but yes, this look..."
Unable to finish, the fire returns to his eyes as they're drawn down to her legs which seem to go on for days, the delicate sequinned dress barely falling past her upper thighs. The intensity of his gaze thrills her.
Taking as much strength as it would to pull two magnets apart, she finally steps away to grab her purse. Ever the gentleman, Sam picks up her jacket holding it out for her. Unable to resist, he takes the opportunity to lean into the crook of her neck, inhaling her scent. She smells like a breath of fresh summer air, flowers and sweetness dancing in the breeze.
Her spine tingles as his lips graze her neck and his fingers gently fondling soft tendrils of her hair to move them out of the way. His whispered words make the hairs on her skin stand to attention.
"God, I wish you were mine tonight, you don't know what you're doing to me."
The indignant ring of the penthouse intercom breaks the spell they find themselves in and she begrudgingly steps away exhaling shakily.
"That'll be my cab."
He watches her sashay over to the elevator, the sway of her hips captivating him once again. Slowly she turns to face him, winking wickedly as the doors are almost closed.
"Don't wait up."
Book: The Nanny Affair
Characters: Sam and Ana
Word Count: 576
A/N: Pillow talk is a ficlet series that can ultimately be read in any order of the small, intimate moments between Sam and Ana. Clearly I am having a lot of fun writing these short stories… so, enjoy!
It never ceases to amazes me just how peaceful this penthouse is at night in a city like New York, our own little escape in the middle of chaos. Sam runs his fingers lightly across my leg that I have draped over his body. The light sheen of sweat that always seems to result in our passionate love making, shimmering with the small amount of light that filters in through the windows. My head resting on his shoulder, I watch his chest rise and fall before I shift my eyes to the twinkling city lights beyond.
“The Met Gala is this weekend.”
I lift my head, resting my weight on my elbow, and give him a wry look. “You have got to be kidding.”
His face remains stoic as he looks down at me through his long lashes. “Not kidding.”
“Sam… I don’t have time to do all of the things necessary to prepare for the fricking Met Gala. Why am I just finding out about this now?”
“Because, we have been so busy with work… and the boys… I guess it just slipped my mind.”
I arch my eyebrow, “The Met Gala slipped your mind?”
“Well, you are also verrrrry distracting.” He pulls my lips to his and I can feel his smile.
I pull away with a sigh, tilting my head to the side.
“Sam… you do know I have a big lab order to do by Friday, right? And a presentation that I have to put together for you.” I emphasize the last word by poking him in the chest.
“Of course, but if there is anyone that can do it all, it’s you. Besides, Kate is already on top of it.” He grabs my thigh and hitches it higher onto his stomach.
“Kate… as in Kate Young?” My eyes widen.
“Remember, everything you deserve.” He reaches out and cups my cheek, trailing his thumb across my bottom lip. I bring his thumb in between my teeth and bite it softly. I hear his breath hitch as his eyes darken.
“You are too good to me…” I whisper, my eyes scanning his handsome face.
“Ana, you are one of the most beautiful and brilliant women I have ever met, it’s one of the easiest things I do in my life, treating you right. It’s like breathing.” He shifts his gaze up to the ceiling. “Oh yeah, we also have an interview for our new nanny tomorrow.”
I lightly shove his shoulder with a small laugh, “Anything else you want to fill me in on Mr. Dalton?”
“The boys science fair is on Friday.”
“Wait, What?” Shit, how did I forget that?
“Ana, don’t worry, I have been helping them with it. You just need to be there.”
I lay my head down on his shoulder with a sigh, my eyes rise to his face and he is looking at me out of the corner of his eye.
“Is there something else?” I narrow my eyes at him.
He takes a breath through his teeth… “My parents want to have dinner tomorrow night.”
I sit up and straddle his hips, laying my hands on either side of his head.
“Samuel Joseph Dalton…”
“Mmm, Anastasia Rose Schuyler, I love it when you call me by my whole name.” He reaches up with both of his hands, squeezing my bare ass.
“…We need a vacation.” I lean down and get lost in his touch, over and over again.
I absolutely adore this sentiment, not the being ignored part but the fact that how a man treats a woman he’s not attracted to speaks volumes about his character. Something I’m going to make sure my son knows as he grows up! 🙌🏻
Yeah, I’m gonna need everyone to read this and take note of it right quick 💅 (x)
The Year Between
Tumblr media
A/N: What’s up my peanuts! Who’s ready to get a little peek into the OC’s that will be a part of The Year Between, the sequel series to 101 Smiles. Except this time it won’t be just picta edits and the occasional ficlets, It’s going to edits, of course, but also chapters that coincide with each edit post. And not always fluffy.
I love the universe we created together, and I’m going to challenge myself again and try my hand at an actual AU series. We may thrive, we may fail, but it’s going to be a fun experience either way. So with that said, let’s get into this.
The Diamond
Book: Open Heart: Third Year Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Genevieve McClure) Word Count: 740 Rating: T (to be safe) Category: fluff, nothing but pure fluff Trope(s):
Summary: MC and Ethan come home from a charity gala, and the night takes a surprising turn. (aka the man proposes)
No Warnings
A/N: Here we are, the very last post of 101 Smiles. I love you guys so much, thank you for helping to create this amazing universe.
And without further ado, the story of how Ethan proposed to Gen on Day 101.
Also, for non-smile world peeps, you don’t need any that to enjoy this. It’s literally just a proposal fic.
Tumblr media
He’s been kissing her since they got in the elevator, lighthearted but breathtaking nonetheless. Like he can’t get enough of her, like every second their lips aren’t touching is a fate worse than death.
And she knows the feeling, every kiss with him still feels precious. Even after all this time, two years since their first kiss on a Miami balcony, every second with him feels more perfect than the last.
He pushes her against the apartment door, their lips still fused together as he fishes for the keys. Somehow, he unlocks it without missing a beat, catching her waist as she loses balance when the door swings open.
They share a laugh, muffled in the nonexistent space between them, as Ethan closes the door with his foot. His hands finding refuge in her hair as he walks them further into the moonlit apartment.
“We should hydrate, otherwise we’ll be hungover tomorrow.”
“Good idea.” He mumbles against her, words almost lost in the way he keeps kissing her.
Sam and Ana- The Nanny Affair
A/N- my short ficlet series about the intimate moments between Sam and Ana. Enjoy lovelies.
Word Count: 865
My eyes flicker open and blink against the midday light that is streaming through the windows. I close my eyes tight with a soft groan before I feel for my phone on the nightstand, my fingertips finding and grasping onto it. The screen comes to life, the photo of Mickey and Mason smiling with Mickey Mouse warming my heart before I notice the time… 1:15. Fuck. My head falls back onto the pillow as my hands reach up and rub the sleep from my eyes.
“Hello, beautiful.” His warm husky voice fills the silence as I feel the bed shift under his weight.
“Why did you let me sleep so late?” My eyes open as I sit up and train my gaze on Sam’s handsome face, which is alight with his perfect smile.
“Because, you were in the lab late last night, and I knew you needed sleep.” He reaches out and tucks a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his fingertips lightly brushing my jaw. His chocolate eyes shift down to the sheets, “And, I can tell you were tired, you left a little drool on the sheets.”
I feel a blush rise on my cheeks, my eyes following his gaze, and sure enough, there is a small round stain. I grab one of the feather pillows and swing it against his shoulder.
“Mm… Mmm…” Sam’s lips turn up in a mischievous grin while he shakes his head. “Don’t start something you can’t finish.”
I narrow my eyes at him with a coy smile and swing the pillow again, this time, hitting him harder.
“Ana…” He warns.
“I dare you.” I whisper and I watch his eyes light up as he stands up from the bed.
“Oh… you shouldn’t have said that.” His gaze darkens as he reaches for the matching feather pillow, bringing it to his chest. He takes a tentative step towards me, and I cock my eyebrow in challenge.
Before I can react, he swings the pillow, hitting me on my shoulder and nearly knocking me over. I scoff at him as I sit up on my knees, his face breaking into an even bigger grin.
“Game on.” I stand up on the bed, my fingers desperately gripping the feather pillow as I take a strong swing.
I squeal with laughter as he returns the attack. My next hit aiming for the side of his head.
He chuckles at the harmless contact.
“This isn’t fair, you barely move.” I say between laughs, eyeing him warily.
“Oh, my beautiful Ana, who said life is fair?” His chest rises and falls as he climbs up on the bed next to me. I tilt my head back to watch his face. He leans in, the heat from his body drawing me towards him like a moth to a flame. He licks his lips, his Adams apple rising and falling as he swallows. His eyes drop to my lips… Suddenly, I feel the pillow that was once held firmly in my grasp get yanked out of my hold. Sam jumps off of the bed, now clutching a pillow in each hand.
“You tricked me.” I narrow my eyes at him, resting my hands on my hips.
“All part of the game, baby.” He says with a cocky smile as he takes long, slow strides around the bed.
My eyes flick to the remaining pillows on the bed and then back to Sam. I quickly make a move to grab another pillow as Sam moves to swing his at me. I manage to grab one before he makes contact.
I jump off of the bed and charge him, my pillow swinging at him as we trade harmless blows, our laughs echoing through the empty penthouse.
The onslaught continues until suddenly… the inevitable finally happens.
A blizzard of goose down feathers swirl around the room as the pillows break open. Sam to drops his pillows. I pause, my heart threatening to jump out of my chest. He smiles at me and then takes a step towards me, lowering himself to haul me over his shoulder. I squeal as I try, and fail, to swing the pillow at him, causing more feathers to fall around us like snow.
He drops me down on the bed, my back hitting the soft mattress. I use the momentum to sit up, still clutching my pillow, although it’s almost empty of its feathers. I manage to swing one last time, before he wraps his arms snug around me.
Our laughter is ringing off of the walls as he lays his body on top of mine, the sound of his deep laugh vibrating through me.
“Okay, okay, I surrender.” I say as I try to catch my breath between fits of laughter.
He sits up, placing his hands on either side of my head with his perfect smile. Feathers cling to his lashes and his hair. I bite my lip and gaze into his warm brown eyes that are dancing with happy tears.
“I win.” He leans down and presses a brief kiss on my lips.
He looks around the room, feathers still lingering in the air and covering nearly ever surface of the furniture and floor. He looks back at me with his chocolate eyes and brings his full lips back to mine, this time, deepening the kiss.
