happy valentine's day, friends! 💜
a week or so ago i ran a bunch of polls on what kind of shadowgast picture i should draw for v-day, and y'all have helped me build something really fun! especially with the three winners of the color poll (purple, teal, and orange!). i don't know how much of a 'regular shadowgast' this picture has turned out to be (regular shadowgast are probably studying ancient tomes in a dusty library as we speak), but let's say that i am giving you the plot bunny gift of figuring out the setting of this scene 😏
tip jar!

Caleb being so into time and then falling for the time guy™, yes, but also. Essek’s journey later on being all about changing, to be better, to grow a conscience, and alongside falling for the literal transmutation wizard, aka change guy (™!)

no, but the way ashton was so, so afraid that this was how FCG's story was going to end. he was SO afraid FCG was going to martyr himself. this can't go well for ashton. I cannot imagine he's going to handle this death well

The last episode was awesome and tragic, one of the best ones ever. I almost choked when I saw F.C.G. again in the opening during the rebroadcast. However, I found some solace in these facts:
1) The head is mostly intact. 2) Aeormatons count as "humanoid creatures" even if they are artificial. 3) Reincarnate is a level 5 druid spell that requires only a portion of the original humanoid body to work. Fearne has access to it, she only requires the ingredients and the spell slot. And even if she can't cast it right now, it's possible that the gang is going to talk to Keyleth as soon as they will be back on Exandria, and she might have the ingredients and the spell slots to cast it immediately. Otherwise, they have 10 days to find the rare oils and unguents they need for the spell.
This means that it is possible to try and bring F.C.G. back to life, but if that would happen he wouldn't be an Aeormaton anymore. Honestly, I'm on board to have Organic Letters who tries to save the world and to learn how to act and feel like a normal organic creature full time. I can only imagine how insufferable he will be for having a tongue and real legs after the transformation.
Also, Reincarnate ruined Veth's life by changing her into a goblin. It's kinda poetic that the very same spell might be Letters' only hope to keep on living, right after that they learned that the body one inhabits is irrelevant in order to be truly alive.

Sam Riegel really constructed the perfect tragic character arc here. A good tragedy is one rooted in the flaws of the character, written into the bones of their personality so that their downfall feels at once inevitable and entirely preventable. And that was FCG to a T.
Because they were so convinced they were less than everyone else from minute one. They were so self-sacrificng that their central healing mechanic was built around it. And they came so far towards self-worth. They found a God and a soul, they made friends that told them how important they were. They fell in love!
But it was never enough. It was never enough because they were literally built for this. Constructed with a bomb in the center of their chest and a martyr complex and so much love. Dying for their friends was almost an inevitable conclusion.

matt ruling that the technical damage from the explosion was irrelevant due to the power and weight of fcg’s sacrifice is what really got me. even if sam rolled the max possible number on the dice, it wouldn’t have even brought otohan to below where she was before she took the health potion. mechanically speaking, she should have survived that blast by a LOT of hit points. but this was a player willingly killing their own character, beyond reviving and even potentially beyond resurrection, to give the rest of the party any advantage they could, and he rewarded that with the death of an antagonist that has haunted this campaign from the very beginning. unreal fucking plays by both matt and sam tonight.

Taliesin: "Not to be cheap, but--love is special. Love is wonderful. Love is always different. It's honestly a dull world where we use it for far too many things. Wish I could...love someone, love my friends, love a cheesecake--all in different ways. But unfortunately, we've been given one word for all of this. Enjoy it. It will always be different, but it will always be the first, and easiest thing to begin. And it makes the sound of whatever happened to you before quiet--just a bit, for a little while."
Thinking still of this new Taliesin quote that warms my whole heart and is just so healing--
