Joe Stevens' Peel Dream Magazine project has dazzled savvy listeners for the last several years with its tuneful yet hypnotic synthesis of post-punk, shoegaze, 60s pop and motorik kosmische grooves. Their most recent salvo of the album "Agitprop Alterna" and companion EP "Moral Panics" was one of the few bright spots of a pandemic-wracked 2021.
Now Stevens is back with "Pad," an altogether more conceptual work informed by his own journey in and out of Peel Dream, his experiences with soundtrack scoring, and his abiding love of Brian Wilson, Harry Nilsson and The High Llamas. "Pad" draws on influences from baroque pop to bossa nova, folk and mid-century orchestral, from Burt Bacharach-era 60s pop to first wave homemade post-punk. It's a unique sound that is at once relaxing and engaging and makes a most satisfying next step in the Peel Dream Magazine trajectory. Out now!

The Reds, Pinks & Purples' "They Only Wanted Your Soul" compiles ten terrific, scarce early RPPs tunes onto one beautiful blue vinyl LP. It’s both a perfect introduction to Glenn Donaldson's wry, melancholy take on pop and a crucial listen for the long-time fan. Out now!

The Reds, Pinks and Purples — They Only Wanted Your Soul (Slumberland)
Tumblr media
They Only Wanted Your Soul by The Reds, Pinks & Purples
Don’t let the airy dream and drift of Glenn Donaldson’s Reds, Pinks and Purples fool you. This is an exceptionally prolific band, which sounds like an endless, sighing Sunday afternoon’s regrets and functions like a factory stamping out wistful pop in bulk quantities. This is the second Red, Pinks and Purples album this year, following Summer at Lands’ End, and if you missed that, or the lovely Uncommon Weather from 2021, well, time to shake off that ennui and get busy. Here’s another good one.

The Reds, Pinks & Purples — Uncommon Weather (Slumberland/Tough Love)
Tumblr media
Uncommon Weather by The Reds, Pinks & Purples
Glenn Donaldson’s third album as Reds, Pinks & Purples distills wistful pop into lucid purity. Fuzz-coated guitar lines lift out of foggy statics of hiss and hum. Wavering melodies pick their way carefully upward, then fall back softly in the gentlest sort of elegiac resignation. There’s a grace and radiance to these songs that might remind you of the best of the lo-fi janglers — The Bats, David Kilgour, Kelley Stoltz — and a sly humor that brings to mind the Television Personalities.

The Reds, Pinks & Purples- Uncommon Weather (Slumberland)
Tumblr media
San Francisco’s Glenn Donaldson always seems to have several musical projects going at the same time (Painted Shrines to name one and their latest record is terrific) but the Reds, Pinks & Purples is his main one and on this splendid 13-song record he seems to have hit the jackpot with a truly wonderful batch of songs. I’ve loved just about everything he’s done under the RPP’s name but on Uncommon Weather he seems to tie all the songs together just about perfectly. The songs are bathed in melancholia (just look at some of these songs title- “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” or “I’m Sorry About Your Life”), but Donaldson never wallows in self pity. He’s almost tossing those titles/lines off as asides with a resigned tone. The songs sound like a thoughtful of mix of bands like Felt, the Field Mice (and a few other Sarah records bands), The Clientele, Galaxie 500, etc. but really, he has forged his own sound at this point with so many strong songs over the past few years.  “The Record Player and the Damage Done” is among my faves on here with its swift jangle as is the echoey, almost haunting “The Songs You Used to Write” or the almost-grand “Life At Parties.”  The thing is that Donaldson seems to hit on just the right mood and vibe on this record where it seems like not a song or note is out of place. The year is young but this will be on my best of 2021 lists (all of that and it’s on Slumberland, one of the most consistently great American record labels of the past 30 years).  www.slumberlandrecords.com

Prolific San Francisco artist Glenn Donaldson is back with his second record as Reds, Pinks & Purples in just six months and it is one for the ages. "Uncommon Weather" might be Glenn's most personal record yet, a gorgeous and melodic snapshot of San Francisco full of beauty, melancholy and absolutely sterling tunes. I hear echoes of everything from The Chills to The Television Personalities to Blueboy, and you will no doubt hear others. "Uncommon Weather" is a tribute to the mysterious and enduring power of the best pop music and to Donaldson's singular musical gifts. We've teamed-up with our friends at Tough Love in the UK to release this brilliant album, and it is out today.  Get it here: https://smarturl.it/uncommon-weather

Jeanines- S/T (SLUMBERLAND)
Tumblr media
I started hearing rumblings of this NYC duo of Alicia Jeanine and Jed Smith (from the terrific My Teenage Stride….for some reason I had no idea he was in the band until, like a few days ago) for a few months and liked what I’d heard and now here’s the 16-song record and it’s as good as advertised (Slumberland took out full page ads in Searstown and Two Guys circulars …Woolworths too). Alicia sings AND plays guitar and sounds a little like the gal from Veronica Falls while Jed is thumpin’ away on the bass and drums (a lil’ guitar, too) and they make quite a formidable duo. Plus at only 25 minutes long these 16 songs really move. They have to, they’ve gotta say what they wanna say and move on to the next one. I can’t tell if Alicia’s vocals are double or triple tracked or maybe they got all of the members of Shop Assistants in the room to sing too but either way her vocals sound super cool, echoey,  reverby and very far away yet right there. A few classic cuts here include “Too Late” which sounds like prime Flying Nun circa 1987 (or prime Slumberland, which it is, circa now) “Where I Stand,” “Either Way,’ “You Were Mine,” “In this House” and plenty more. Fans of The Courtneys, Look Blue Go Purple, Tiger Trap or any C-86 band worth their salt will dig this. Warning, listening to the Jeanines can be very addictive so if you get addicted don’t blame me (or go ahead and blame me).    www.slumberlandrecords.com

Did Not Chart is one of my fave music blogs - it's got taste, perspective and style. It is always treat when they talk about one of our releases, and this Jeanines piece is more than just a review, it's a meditation on indiepop, vinyl and the economics of "disposable" pop. Excellent. "Albums by heritage rock artists are released on vinyl to make hefty profits and for people to take seriously. They’re really making a case for the CD revival. This Jeanines record has been released to make people happy. Job done."

Papercuts have just released a new EP to coincide with their ongoing EU tour with Steve Gunn. Have a listen to their lovely cover of Jackson C. Frank's "Blues Run The Game" and definitely catch them on tour if you can.
