Honestly I feel like this went over so many people's heads. But like you I clocked that immediately. He was talking about Wille in that moment and Wille knew it too.
During that classroom scene in S3E1, when Felice says, “…they think it’s degrading to miss someone who’s fucked you over so damn hard.”
And Simon replies, “well it is degrading.” His face looks so small like he’s not just talking about Sara. Then we get that great cut to Wille’s equally somber expression and I’m just :((( about it all :(

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Wille still a Prince?
Yes he gave up the Crown Prince title but his mother is still the Queen, he's still a part of the Royal Family, he'll still live in the Palace while he's a minor and his parents will still afford him all the clothes, money and privileges they've always given him. The only difference is that now that he has given up his position as Crown Prince he will no longer be next in line for the throne, meaning he won't be King, and therefore free to run around on his own without body guards the way he used to before Erik died.
Of course this time around he is standing up for himself and what he wants for his life, instead of buckling under the pressure of trying to live for his parents or the Royal Court or the people of Sweden.
It's just weird to keep hearing people say he's no longer a Prince or part of the Royal Family when that was not my understanding.

I get it. I honestly struggle when it comes to how he could live freely in the way that he wants while still being Crown Prince. I've said multiple times that I don't want him to step down, I want him to find peace in his position in life. Wille himself said he told them he was gonna be both Crown Prince and Simon's boyfriend and I truly believe that he can be, but only if he does it his way. What he can't be is the Crown Prince they want him to be and be Simon's boyfriend. I even like that Simon said he can be against the Monarchy and still like Wille who wasn't so sure at the time. Can you really? He asked, but again Simon assured him he can.
So do I think it's possible for Wille to have it both ways? I do. He just has to stand up for himself and Simon and live his life the way he wants to. The Royal court might want things a certain way, but they can't just hand his title over to August because Wille doesn't behave the way they want him to. The only threat August poses is if Wille can't handle the pressure of his duties, but I think he can if allowed to just be himself.
Renouncing the throne would not set Wilhelm free
A question asked of those in the Young Royals fandom: Are you Team Monarchy or Team Abdication?
For those who wish to see Wilhelm fulfil his birthright, the desire comes from him being able to find peace with himself and thus the role, and setting an example by living as the first openly queer monarch in Swedish Royal history. That it denies August the position also helps this argument.
For those who wish to see Wilhelm renounce the thrown, the desire comes from wishing him to be free from the shackles of unasked for expectations, and emancipated from the pressure that crushes down on his wellbeing, his romantic relationship, and his ability to live a "normal" teen and adult life.
But here's the thing: Wilhelm is marked for life. Refusing to become King, and removing himself from all royal duties and the Crown itself, will not lead him to become a "normal" person.
There is a real world, contemporary example of a prince forsaking his duties and being no freer from the media circus that haunts him—Prince Harry of the British Royal Family. The details of his conflict and departure from his royal duties are widely publicised, no less than in his own autobiography. To be sure, the pressures and scrutiny he has faced growing up are horrific—least of all the media treatment of his mother's death—and the racialised aggression towards his wife is beyond disgusting. It makes total sense that he would want to remove himself and his own family from the shit show that is being a royal in the Internet Age.
But rather than give him and his family the peaceful life he seems to crave, the media fire has only intensified. How much of this is driven my him I can't say; but the point is, making an effort to step away form his expectations has not freed him.
And so, to Wilhelm. He can chose to renounce the thrown, and he can choose not to become King, but he will always, always, be Prince Wilhelm. Unless he were to completely cut himself off from society, run away into a forest and never be seen again, he will forever be marked as a Prince.
Wille has also stated that he actually likes the monarchy. Who would he even be outside of it? He can't just get a job in a bakery or be a bus driver. What would he do? How would he live?
What I want is for Wilhelm to be able to find peace with himself and his place in the world, and based on what we've seen in season 3, I don't think it's more likely that will come to him outside of the monarchy than within it. He is a young, troubled man who needs considerable help and support, and I don't think leaving the framework he's accustomed to—with all of the resources it provides—to walk into an even greater media fire will help him.
I want Wille to be happy and I want him to be free. But moving away from his family and birthright is not, for me, the answer.

I've been thinking about episode 6 and how they will resolve everything in just one episode. But I do have faith that they will resolve things.
I have never been a fan of Wilhelm stepping down because I feel like he shouldn't have to, but after watching episodes 1-5 I think he may genuinely need to in order to live his life freely. He's been told his entire life that being a prince is a privilege and not a punishment, but the fact is that for him it does feel like a punishment. The Monarchy is a prison for him which is why letting August take over would mean freedom for Wille. Honestly, at this point, I think his hatred of August is probably the only thing stopping him from handing his title over, so I do think maybe they have to resolve that in order for Wille to feel good about his decision.
Idk. There are just so many possibilities, but again I will say that if it ends with Simon and Wille happy and August finally being held accountable for his shitty behaviour then I'll be okay with that.

Honestly in that moment Wille was his mother's son.
The shushing truly is the absolute worst. Cant believe Simon didn’t dropkick Wille out of the tent, if he told Felice I’m sure she would’ve helped even tho both of them love Wille so much.

Final episode predictions
-Time jump (possibly to their graduation?)
-One last night pact
-Sara and August get back together
-The Queen has a health scare
-Wilhelm DOES NOT abdicate but doesn’t become king just yet either
-That being said he THREATENS to abdicate (unless things change but also ensures August won’t get the throne, maybe threatens to go to the press again?)
-Time apart
-Wilmon endgame (they need time apart to heal but the whole show is their love story it makes no sense to end broken up)
-Stedrika endgame (not necessarily explicitly it could just be fredrika admitting she likes her)
-Royals talk about Erik (Wilhelm tells them he wasn’t perfect)
-Wilhelm gets a tattoo (wishful thinking but I want him to get the heart not even on his hand just somewhere)
-Hillerska gets closed down at the end of the year (possibly due to Felice’s comments, also possibly gets saved at last minute but they definitely want it shut down)
Also I think the scene of them in the car will be the last scene and I don’t think it will end with a break in the fourth wall or if it does, it will be a happy one (with him smiling instead of plotting revenge)

Everything we learned about August in season 3 does nothing to diminish my distaste for him as a person. If anything, finding out what he went through as a first year only makes what he did 10 times worse because he knows what it felt like to be bullied, pushed around and made to feel small, and yet he did it to Simon and Alexander and even Wille while getting some sick sense of power from it.
August is a piss person. And all the "nice" things he says and does for or in defense of Sara is because it serves what he wants, which is to get her back. We have never once seen him do something selfless or remotely nice that wasn't motivated by self interest or to ease his own guilt.
So no! Your villian origin story means absolutely nothing, and understanding where you came from doesn't excuse your shitty behaviour August.

Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of season 3. Love it actually. But some of the plots could have been better served if they had built on them in season 2 instead of fucking around with a love triangle.

all of you said that Simon's outfit for Wille's birthday was terrible but no gif or impassioned text post could've prepared me for just how bad it is
