She’s the Man
Though easy company always had their weekend pass revoked, got punishment for the tiniest issue, being the only company amongst the nine to march in the dark on Friday nights, but there was one thing that sobel rarely cared about: their leisure time in the afternoon, where all of them are free to do whatever they want for two hours, though they usually spend their leisure time playing sports.
It also happens that it's the only time they got to put up a genuine smile on their pretty faces aside from the mess hall. Every trooper in easy company got changed into their p.t attire, talking and laughing, getting excited for baseball – mostly since not everyone of them play baseball – already picking their team members. It's as if they could see victory before they even set foot on the baseball field.
“Wait, i thought we're competing against I company today,” Luz said as he slipped into his runners, identical to every other trooper. Same size even.
“That's right, that's right. How many scores do you think we can beat 'em?”
“Don't care, as long as i can get a smile on that little lady's face.” It was still quite strange to them that that girl successfully got enlisted in the army, as well as the other two girls in abel, but truthfully, they weren't as famous as the girl from I company.
They laughed. “You need to be careful with that one, malarkey. She's got 80 other brothers to beat you up. Don’t forget you almost broke your nose from the company commander.” Perconte warned him, though not fully serious because he knows his friends won't get her. And the other man wasn't very serious either.
They continued taking bets amongst each other, watched and listened by their company officer, lieutenant winters himself, as he sat at the foot of his bed. He's got changed. He's already in his p.t, but somehow, he likes to wait until the tent is empty before he leaves. He, too, felt calm and less restricted during leisure time or any time as long as not under sobel's supervision. With sobel, everything was extra tight and driving the lieutenant crazy.
Some of easy troopers are already outside the tent, waiting up on their friends who are still in the tent getting change, when they suddenly got loud and extra cheerful, extra mean. Now, winters watched. He knows, when it's loud like that, it's not just any company who passed by. Indeed, it's the I company – most troublesome in 506th, but also the most cheerful aside from easy themself. Two of the most well-known companies in the regiment, and winters bet, even if they were suddenly attacked right now, these men knows a way to cheer them up because that's all they know.
“Oh, here they are!” Winters heard one of easy trooper said. “Already turning yourselves into us before even competing?” The others laugh as if to mock I company. Though it was as bad as threatening them, but the look on their faces as if there were sparks flying, made winters smile as well.
“Oh, come on. This is I company. We don't simply turn before we mess it up!” Winters heard their company commander said as he walked through a crowd of his men like a celebrity, who loves the attention. He sees him every day during morning assembly, but that's just it.
“Yo, brooklyn!” The only girl in the company can be heard calling her friend in the midst of the other men shouting towards each other. “Come on, man, let's go! Can't let these men cheicken out before getting beat by us!” She knows what she's good at and she's bragging about it.
“Yeah, you heard her!” One of her comrades supported.
Winters saw her shadow behind the thick layer of easy's tent outside, walking backwards as she waits for brooklyn. It isn't until she appears in the center with a big smile on her face, eyes shining under the sun, winters feels like there's a spotlight focussing her, making her stand out from the men around her. That's when one of her friends was running towards her like a bull, attacking her mid as she jump on top of him, quickly turned into a piggy-back ride. Her friend turned, causing her to face easy tent as she puts up 🤘 sign with her tongue rolled out.
Some knew her name. Some couldn't care less knowing that neither of them will survive the war. But her laughs, though. Her laugh made every men in the 506th regiment at ease.

“The Girl in the Frame”
Tumblr media
Dick had a hard time finishing his report on the last invasion. There was something there, at the invasion in Randwijk, that he doesn’t know how to describe them in words. With the Germans taking a perfect position in the building, with locals as hostages, with them out in the open about going forward as if to intimidate the Germans by telling them they’re fearless. They were many, many casualties that happened that day, though Dick didn’t expect less.
Dick realised that he has wasted a lot of papers and carbon for the report his senior officers demanded. He sighed for the countless of times, scratching the back of his head, wishing he has someone else to write it for him. Though being the battalion commander was never his problem....well, until it comes to reports. But that’s when Y/N came up to his office with Lewis behind her.
“Hey.” Dick looked at Y/N and smiled briefly before returning his focus to his typewriter, though he had lost that long before his fellow battalion officers came to visit.
Y/N entered deeper the office room, making way for the S-2 officer.
“Busy?” Dick looked up once again only to see his best friend waving his liquor bottle.
Dick sighed. While Y/N stood beside Dick’s work table, Dick approaches his footlocker and opened its lit, as if showing Lewis his prize. If Y/N could be honest, she really wants to have a taste of Lewis's Vat69, but lucky to Lewis, she's not very much a drinker. Though sometimes, between wars, she thinks that she will drink at daylight.
Dick took his seat back at his work table with Y/N standing close beside him, though that doesn't seem to bother him at all.
“I don’t know why I’m still doing this.”
“What? Drinking?” Dick replied without looking up at his best friend. He was writing something on his notepad -- one that Y/N cannot focus especially when her eyes quickly caught a picture with a nice frame not far from his typewriter.
“No. Hiding at your footlocker. I’m captain for Christ’s sake.”
Y/N’s ears caught the sound of liquid being poured into Lewis’s aluminum bottle.
“Well, why don’t you just give it up?”
The conversation could get more interesting if Y/N, being there, throwing sarcasm at Lewis because that’s how their friendship is like, but that picture....that picture caused Y/N’s heart break, her brain blank, her tongue tied.
“Drinking?”
“Hiding at my footlocker. You’re a captain for Pete’s sake.”
That made Y/N laughs at Dick’s reply and, in return, Dick glanced at her with a friendly smirk at the end of his lips. Though Y/N’s disappointed at Dick because of the picture of a woman sat just a few centimetres from Dick’s typewriter, but what he said genuinely made her laugh.
“Anyway, I think I should go,” Y/N took a deep breath, cutting the conversation between Lewis and Dick in the middle. Both men had confusions in their face especially Lewis. She insisted on following him when he told her he's seeing Dick. “You seem busy.”
“Just finishing off my report that I failed to turn to Colonel Sink on time and then I’d be....” He glanced Lewis who was already giving him a knowing look with a smirk. Giving excuses isn't really Captain Dick Winters’s things.
Dick rolled his eyes at him before returning to Y/N. “You have something about the company?”
Y/N quickly looked up to meet Dick’s eyes and batted her eyelashes after realising she had been staring at the picture for too long. “Pretty beat up, but they're fine. But, I do have a question, though.”
Dick put down his pencil and turned his attention fully towards Y/N. “Who’s that girl in the picture?”
Lewis watched as Dick’s face fell. He knows trouble when he sees one and Dick is definitely in trouble. Although he’s marriage isn’t promising, but he tried to be Dick’s best friend. He'd told him to tell her before she finds out from someone else’s mouth, but seems that Dick didn’t take his advice seriously. He was amused to see Dick struggling to answer Y/N’s question.
“My fiancé.” Dick’s heart was beating so fast in his chest. He knew this would happen. He felt bad for Y/N to find out about his supposed lover right at this moment, but he didn’t mean it.
“Your fiancé?” Y/N’s eyebrows raised. She tried her best to mask the sadness in her surprise and tried to sound cheerful as a friend.
Dick shamefully nodded his head. “Yeap,” he answered lowly and slowly looked away, catching Lewis’s stare once again.
Y/N smiled bitterly. “Oh. Didn’t know that you have a fiancé, but that’s okay. I’m gonna get back to my platoon now.”
She left. The stomp of her boots on the wooden floor of Holland’s building told Dick that he made a big mistake for hiding about his status. After all, he showed how hopelessly in love he was with Y/N.
“Y/N.” Lewis heard the panic in Dick’s voice. As much as he liked what he’s watching right now, but he knows he shouldn’t feel that way.
Though he stood, and sighed, and watched Y/N stomped away, but he didn’t make a move until when he glanced at Lewis, as if to complain about the-only-woman-in-the-battalion’s behaviour.
“You seriously want to stand there and let her run away without doing anything?”
“She won’t listen to me.”
“Aw, Dick. She’s a woman! Women are supposed to be like that. Just-- Go!”
It took Dick several seconds to understand what Lewis meant.
“Y/N!” Dick got up and chased after Y/N, who’s walking as fast as she could towards her platoon’s camp. She thought she could get away from the men’s attention, though she already threw tantrum in front of Lewis, but with her, being the only woman in the battalion and with Dick following her and calling her name, she couldn’t ever get away from the attention.
“Y/N, stop.”
Y/N pulled a face, though Dick couldn’t see it since they’re both facing the same direction. They’re outside of the walls, in public’s eyes, these men are watching them despite being tired from war. She didn’t slow down her walking pace as she headed towards her platoon camp.
Dick finally made a decision to jump in front of Y/N to stop her. “What’re you doing?”
“What do you think am I doing?” Dick was aware of the curious eyes around them, but he managed to ignore them all.
“You're causing attention. Oh, right. I see that. Before they start talking, I should go.” Y/N looked around and saw a bunch of men who stopped in the middle of their journey and watched their officers having a little running and chasing and argument.
Y/N was used with the attention she got from the men, especially when she was one of two women in the regiment, and didn’t try to avoid them anymore just a few weeks after training, but this. If she could avoid this, she would.
“C’mon. Let’s talk about this in my office.”
“I have a platoon to take care of, Captain.”
“Okay, okay, fine!” Dick quickly said before Y/N started running again. “I’m engaged. We were engaged before I volunteered as paratrooper and recruited at Camp Toccoa. I was supposed to be married to that woman after war over, but I swear to God, I can’t.”
“Why? Isn’t it lucky for you that you already have someone waiting for you back home? You already have someone who will be there on your worst nightmares. C’mon, Dick, admit it. I’m here just to fill in your emptiness because she’s not here with you.”
“Trust me. It’s never like that.”
“You should be grateful, Dick. At least, when war’s over, you have something and someone to look forward to.”
“Listen to me first.”
Y/N rolled her eyes and opened her step to leave again, but Dick stopped her once again.
“Listen!” Dick forced. “If I tell you that it’ll be hard for me to be with someone who doesn’t understand my work line, will you understand?”
“Dick, war is ugly,” Y/N replied. “But you don’t want someone who goes through familiar things with you to comfort you when you're having bad dreams.”
“That exactly what I want.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about, Richard Winters.”
Y/N may have experienced it once or twice. She was trapped a relationship with someone who claimed had gone through the same, but acted as if they didn’t. He didn’t do good enough to comfort her. He left her hanging, dealing with her depression all by herself. There were more than once that she tried to kill herself at war because of him.
“Y/N--”
“No. Write to her. Tell her you're sorry. That you betrayed her. Beg her for forgiveness and another chance. Oh, and you know what, tell her about me. Also tell her that I'm sorry." Y/N's voice croaked. "Do that and forget about what we had.”

What’s the report on enemy activity? Expect some flares, a few mortars at night; scattered 88s, snipers during the day.
