Oh my goshhh finally someone Who feels the same as me, like sure Below Zero is good and polished now, but the old dialogues/storyline during the EA1 days were IT, they just had so much more depth and personality! I still got a lot of them from working with the italian translation team, here’s some I love:
1) Alan proposing on the spot the second he saw Robin
ROBIN: what do you want?
AL-AN: for you to stay here
ROBIN: with you?
AL-AN: forever
-------------------------------
2) Savage Alan
AL-AN: I can think more efficiently when we are not sharing your language processing unit.
ROBIN: Are you asking me to shut up?
Al-AN: That is another way of putting it
----------------------------------------------
3) More worldbuilding
AL-AN: On our worlds it is not necessary to work, nor possible to starve.
And there is a free flow of information in the network.
Disagreements are rare.
ROBIN: So there's no conflict, no pressure... is it as peaceful as it sounds?
AL-AN: Anxiety stems from unpredictability. When we are anxious, we seek greater control.
-------------------------------------------
4) Alan being butthurt because Robin's not pampering him enough
AL-AN: You are impatient. You dislike my presence.
ROBIN: No, I just value independence. For both of us.
AL-AN: Then why have you not inquired about my status recently?
ROBIN: I'm sorry, Al-An. How are you doing?
AL-AN: I am nominal.
ROBIN: How else are you doing?
AL-AN: That is all.
-----------------------------------------------
5) Savage Marge being savage
PILOT: I don't trust anyone who's too big to fight, or too greedy to buy. Alterra's both.
-------------------------------------------------
6) Interesting Architect beliefs
AL-AN: I am an idea, not a set of physical components.
ROBIN: Then why not just stay safe inside your computers?
AL-AN: The same reason you did not stay safe on your homeworld.
ROBIN: Then why don't we just copy you into a fish?
AL-AN: First, that would reduce my capacities further. Second, you may enjoy having a passenger, but I prefer to drive.
ROBIN: It sounds like you need your independence, and you're asking if I'm willing to help you?
AL-AN: No, I am telling you what to do.
ROBIN: Sam could tell you how rarely that works. Fortunately for you, our needs overlap.
--------------------------------------------------
7) THIS. WHY WAS THIS NOT IN THE GAME
ROBIN: Al-An, can you hear me?
AL-AN: Of course.
ROBIN: I've been wondering. You came here to extract a cure from a creature that would have gladly given it if only you'd listened to what she needed. Why didn't you just ask for help?
AL-AN: It did not occur to us to listen. We knew how to extract.
ROBIN: You were scared?
AL-AN: We did not want to die. It was too important.
----------------------------------------------------
8) Also just- Jeff and the old storyline. SO much better.
ROBIN: Sam, something's happening in the sky. *The rocket hits the shield and explodes* It's a shield! The rocket's gone!
DIRECTOR: What is happening down there?!
SAM: We're being hailed.
JEFF: Vesper, I am now in control of the planet.
ROBIN: Jeff?!
JEFF: Approaching vessels will be destroyed.
DIRECTOR: What do you want?
JEFF: You will remove the Vesper to the next solar system. My colleagues there will supply you with enzyme 42.
DIRECTOR: Why would I?
JEFF: Because I have destroyed your existing enzyme stores, cut you off from acquiring more, and released the kharaa bacterium onboard your station.
DIRECTOR: You're lying.
JEFF: You're itching.
DIRECTOR: Run a medscan! What do you hope to gain by killing us?
JEFF: Don't pretend we're not all here for the same reason. The living architect. You know Robin's been harboring it. You've been waiting your moment to grind it up into profit.
DIRECTOR: You'd risk infecting the whole galaxy?
JEFF: Don't pretend you would not.
DIRECTOR: Then you know I won't retreat.
JEFF: Then you will die.
SAM: Sir, the scan's positive.
DIRECTOR: Cut the transmission. I want that shield down and I want the marines in orbit.
SAM: Sir!
ROBIN: Sam-
DIRECTOR: And YOU.The moment that shield is down you will be under arrest.
ROBIN: Sam, I had no idea. I'd never put you at risk.
SAM: You've literally done nothing else.
ROBIN: How long have you known?
SAM: I have to go right now.
ROBIN: Sam!
-
ROBIN: No, Al-An, there are no sides.
Believing there are is why these idiots are ready to kill each other.
okay guys hear me out. everyone i talk to regularly knows this already but i miss old alan dialogue. i LOVE his polished character now, but he had some awesome lines in early beta where he talked more about himself and how he views life and i wish they kept them in!!
in case you did not have an insane hyperfixation on beta like me, here’s a couple of my favorite lines that i totally did not spend months looking for after removal

Woah, woah, woah, calm down, you’re literally the only one arguing here? I was simply trying to explain a couple of things to you since you’re new and seemed slightly misinformed, I thought I was being perfectly polite about it? There was no need to throw a tantrum and randomly imply that I’m straight and racist without knowing me (you’re wrong about both btw). Have a nice day I guess geez.
As someone who plays Choices and RC there are some things I like and dislike about both. I like that the characters in RC can actually curse and I like their hair and clothing choices more. I also like that you don’t necessarily have to always pay to move the story along in RC. But I prefer Choices’ writing a lot more. It’s clear they have an actual STAFF of writers who edit and re-edit their work before sending it out. The writing for RC is hit or miss. I also like that Choices has a wider range of LIs (never thought I’d say that). In RC, all of the major LIs are white, with the minor ones being PoC and/or women.
At least with choices, there are some books where all of your LIs are women or PoC.
I don’t think the writing for D: ALS is that strong. In fact, I dropped it when I started playing books with stronger writing. I don’t particularly care for the writing in Rage of the Titans so far, either. S2 of Sins of London is okay. The only stories that I find SUPER fascinating right now are Theodora, Hell and High Water, and Arcanum.

Sorry it took so long, I’m lazy with reblogs rotfl (please be aware that there are spoilers below for the ending you haven’t played yet, then).
I see your point, though I personally think about it as him “expanding” or “getting a promotion” on that job he already had, rather than him leaving it altogether. The clan is part of Noiryo after all, so by becoming Emperor he’d still look over them even if perhaps in a less direct manner (he could actually do more for them as Emperor than as Jounin). I mostly meant to say that though Mei and Takao have similar duties, they are in very different situations. Mei can’t break the Iris bloodline and leave the palace, they tell you multiple times that Sawada would be a cruel Emperor (and he is, if you do leave the throne to him, he ruins the empire for two whole generations and a lot of people die, including Yoko). Personal beliefs aside, Takao could technically leave the clan to Kazu and be Emperor, it’d be inconsequential for the village and none of the shinobi would oppose it. He doesn’t though, not because he can’t, but because he won’t. He even refuses to maintain a long-distance relationship, once again not because he can’t but because he doesn’t want to; and they don’t really explain why beyond that extememly vague and confusing speech he gives you in chapter 8 either (which you don’t even get unless you spend diamonds btw). He just- suddenly became a brick wall who refused any kind of solution or compromise, which is not in character for him at all. Furthemore, even in the ending where you do stay together, the writing is still not remotely at the same level as it is in the ending(s) the other LIs got. That’s what pisses me off most. It. Is. Not. Fair.
So I know that Takao romancers are disappointed that we couldn’t have it all but on the flip side... it makes perfect sense! Out of all the LIs, Takao is the one that is actively pledged to lead a group of people and his character would not let him abandon that even for Mei who he clearly loves a lot. But like that’s a really great thing about him and his personality, no? I would feel like the ending of him abandoning his duty just to follow Mei would be out of character, because he is the type of person to sacrifice his own needs for the good of the clan (which he says repeatedly himself). Like, they both clearly love each other but they are bigger than just regular people. They’re both leaders. They also both had to grow into the sort of people who would be able to handle the burden of leading others. Takao did that before the story and Mei did throughout it. I don’t know like in my head it’s pretty obvious that they would both always choose to help others at the price of their own contentment but then just end up pining after one another for years to come while still being devoted to the roles that they have taken up. Pretty nuanced and interesting ending in that way, I think! (I, myself, am a power hungry snake 🐍 so I had to sacrifice love for the throne. It’s just in my DNA)
