if a witch lives in the southern hemisphere, do they celebrate the holidays in reverse to those from the northern or do they celebrate them at the same time but incorrect seasons?
Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I'm pretty busy and I only get on here once every few days. I'm not entirely sure as I live in the northern hemisphere, but I've heard that some southern witches do flip the holidays to whatever matches their seasons. A lot of the holidays that witches follow, not just the ones that are typically wiccan, tend to follow the seasons and nature, so you follow whatever makes sense for your harvest celebration, or your first days or spring, or the start of the rainy season or it's end, or mid winter.
Personally I think it's much more important to figure out what the holiday is about and adapt to that than it is to follow their order or dates. Once you know what your celebrating and why your celebrating it, and why and who chose that celebration at that time, it's easier to figure out what to do. Heck you might end up inventing your own holidays to correlate with your own seasons, natural happenings, and things of cultural importance.

Scrolling through some shorts while I eat before getting back to work, and suddenly find some witchy content. This is a great example of a curse, and this guy is pretty funny too. He makes a lot of lewd blacksmithing videos with some dirty jokes.
Anyway, I'm done eating. Back to decorating an abandoned wild west town in unreal 5.

Time for my regularly scheduled check in. I'm alive and well, just been super busy with life and work and haven't had anything really worth posting about.
Maybe when life calms down I'll start posting regularly again.

I've got a tutorial on my method of sigil making and using, and I'm always happy to answer questions. https://scroll-of-thought.tumblr.com/post/171514111322/designing-a-sigil-an-illustrated-tutorial
Do you know some good books/resources on sigils? Or can you lead me to someone who blogs about them? I’m already buying Sigil Witchery by Laura Tempest Zakroff but I’m looking for more
Honestly, that's the best one that I've found so far and it's the one I'd recommend. So you're off to a good start!
Any of my sigil witches want to weigh in?

Hey, I just noticed something. So I've been blocking bots by the dozen every day, as I'm sure lots of you are. And normally it's a pretty fast and painless thing, just open their blog to make sure it's a bot, and then block them. Then I realized, there's an ad on the right side. Normally my adblocker is up so I don't notice this, but for whatever reason my plugins didn't start up today and I saw it.
Now this might be conspiracy levels of thinking, but I wonder if this is intentional? The person making the bots must know we all check new followers and block bots regularly (which has almost turned into part of tumblr culture at this point), but if we have to click on the blog to check it and block it, then we count as a view for that ad.
The way ads work with google adsense is the space posting the ads gets paid per thousand impressions (CPM) and if someone clicks an ad they normally earn more (CPC). It's normally not much, the average CPM is around $3 per thousand, but if you're a bot following thousands or 10s of thousands of people per day, and even one thousand of those people click the blog to block it, that bot is making $3 a day. Now, how many bots have you gotten today? That all adds up pretty fast over the hundreds or thousands of new bot accounts out there.
Now, I have no idea how ads work on tumblr. I know you can enable ads to make money from views (I think I have this enabled? Maybe on side blogs? I have adsense from youtube so I think I enabled it since I already have an account. I'm not a big enough blog to get paid either way), but I don't know if that payment goes through tumblr in any way, or if they just enable the html to automatically link your adsense ads if enabled. So I don't know if getting an account banned even stops payment or not. Like, if tumblr is hands off and just enables the html so you can do your thing and earn something, then every view before ban is recorded by google, not tumblr, and that counts towards earnings. So they might not care about being banned, because the money is already earned.
Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't keep blocking, but it does make me wonder if they're playing to our need to keep blocking with that in mind from the start.
I'm going to add here, I could be completely wrong. 99% of my adsense knowledge comes from my youtube channel, which works a little differently. It's possible that the banner ads are only CPC and not based on views, but I don't think that's the case from my experience. And honestly I don't even know where to read up on how non-youtube ads work specifically. But, it's definitely something that I think might be possible. If anyone knows more about this, feel free to add to the conversation. Maybe some big blogs who actually earn anything? Does those even exist on here?

For the past several weeks my insomnia has been kicking my ass. Tonight I actually went to bed at a decent hour, slept on and off for the past few hours and then suddenly woke up knowing cosmic mysteries. Good news is I'm coining a new term for something science has yet to discover is a problem. I woke up with this just kind of playing in my head like a fever dream.
"Ticktectonics is a term for the yet to be discovered dilation of relativistic time caused by gravitational waves and other large scale cosmic events. The vastness of this scale makes it hard to comprehend that the relative time for locations scattered along this large area may have drifted in accordance with areas more heavily affected by those events.
Like it's name sake, plate tectonics, we are not observing reality and this phenomenon at a scale that would let us see Pangea split. And just as continental plates drift by forces so large we can't comprehend them with the naked eye, ticktectonics is the gradual drift of nanoseconds into seconds into centuries on a scale that makes our little continental plates seem meaningless."
I don't know why these ideas come screaming into my mind while half asleep. And I wasn't sure if I should post it here or on my scifi writing blog, but I figured more people might find the idea interesting here. Anyway, I'm going to try to go back to sleep lol

Hey witchlings I've got a tip.
Y'all should seriously experiment more.
Like as long as you understand things like why you're doing an action, the risk, or for example how to undo a spell, try new things. I'm begging you. My practice is built from scratch upon finding inspiration and then experimenting. You can do stuff you've never even seen in a book or online. No one is stopping you!

Really interesting news in runes! potentually the oldest example of runes were found literally the other day. Dr. Crawford goes over his first impressions and says he'll cover more as we learn more.
Here's some twitter links to a couple of english speaking scholars who are working on the runes right now (the one's Dr. Crawford mentions in this video)

I'm pretty excited to see what else we learn from this!

I personally totally disagree, strongly. And that makes me think this is probably much more a personal preference thing than we're imagining.
I don't care about apologies. You saying your sorry holds no weight unless I know why you did what you did. I'm not saying it's a hollow apology, it could be incredibly heart felt and sincere, but unless I know why you did what you did, and equally importantly, I know that you know why you did what you did, apologies don't matter. I prefer an explanation with any apology by default, but Trae's right, if I don't get one I will ask for one, but I often feel like I shouldn't have to ask, it should be part of the process.
This might stem from my traumas or neurodivergence, but one thing this confirms is that there is no one way to think about this. There are extreme different takes in this thread alone, a sample size of 5 with dramatically competing world views. That means there is no universal truth to this and you can't say someone's a bad person or assume their motives solely on whether they include or exclude explanation. There's nuance and communication needed here.
I fucking hate the “explaining = invalidating” when it comes to apologies. Yes, sometimes a person means to invalidate you by saying this, but sometimes we genuinely just want to fucking explain our side so we can properly communicate.
I do not know what the fuck is wrong until I’m told what I’ve done wrong and feel the need to explain in order for us to see both of our sides
I like getting explanations with apologies because for me it helps lessen the damage that was done or can help clear the negative emotions.
I’ve had multiple people say it’s a sign that I’m a bad person that I don’t apologize right away, or that I’m giving excuses instead of owning up and apologizing (which is fucking hard for me to know if I’m actually in the wrong or not and people doing this shit does NOT fucking help). Apologies aren’t always just a “Sorry” one and done deal thing.

I feel like people misunderstand the whole concept of "intention is everything" and it's just warped into making wishes. Like everyone's favorite wise chicken put it
Tumblr media
And somehow people actually think this way? From my experience it's mostly newage moms, witchtok kids, and new witches who just don't really grasp how things work yet because they get their information from the previous two, but still, people think this way.
Without the intention to do laundry, the laundry will just sit there because you don't intend on doing it. Without actually doing it, intending to do it is just inaction. You have to both intend on doing it and actually do it, otherwise it's just going to sit there.
When I first heard about the value of intent in magic, maybe a a decade and a half ago, it was explained in a much more useful way. I don't really remember the exact wording, but I internalized the points that were made and have worked it into my practice from the beginning.
Intent is the design of a spell. It's the programming that dictates how actions should play out when the spell is performed. The intent behind choosing specific ingredient, words, actions, and so on holds weight in the final product your spell will create. Without intent you're just putting on a performance and hoping it somehow impacts the results. You're just going through the motions "because that's how the spell is cast" like it's a mechanical process. The action of burning a bay leaf does not automatically and mechanically grant wishes like some kind of law of physics that bends reality. Turning on the washing machine without the intent of doing laundry only fills the empty washer with water.
'intention is everything in magic!"
Sure, whatever. I intend to wash and fold all my laundry today. Will it happen?
Maybe?
Tumblr media
That there is probably 5 loads of laundry. Sometimes a combination of intent and accountability will be needed to get the job done.

Crow, you don't even know. You got me thinking about collecting energy in a digital space, which lead me to all kinds of weird technomancy places. I had to ask myself the question "Can you enchant digital items? Like, can I enchant a weapon in an MMO?" And I have the resources to actually put real thought into this. I'm an indie game developer and I was talking to my programmer friend the other day about MMO databases. This is going to lead me down a weird path of contemplation and thought experiments.
I know I've previously kind of written off folks who take "energy vampirism" literally, but now I am seriously wondering if there's a way I can harness the power of youthful vexation for my spell work 🤔

I've done this several times. You can just make a spell that takes specific ambient emotions and uses that as fuel for the spell. I made an amulet that's powered by my partner's anxiety and returns focus and calm.
In this post I discuss some concepts with a follower, and if you look through my enchanting tag there's a bunch of other posts. I'm sure something like this can be used for pissing off kids on the twitter or tiktok or whatever, I just mostly have experience enchanting irl objects.
I remember back in the day when I used to lurk in some weird parts of the internet, and I'm sure people have been attempting to power their magic with trolling for as long as witches have had the internet. Like, I have vague memories of geocities spells that turn your enemies anger to your fortune, and it had a footnote about starting arguments on forums.
I know I've previously kind of written off folks who take "energy vampirism" literally, but now I am seriously wondering if there's a way I can harness the power of youthful vexation for my spell work 🤔

This fuckin' edgy boi doesn't even comprehend he vast amount of asks Trae gets regarding their gloves, where we can get some, and how much we envy having personally knitted gifts 😔

Ah yes, @llycaons has become today's volunteer.
One, Tumblr runs off of ad revenue. You have two choices on this site to support it -- be okay with seeing ads or pay for ad-free. Harassing advertisers actually helps no one, because it discourages folks from running ads.
Which means tumblr makes less money, and as the site is already losing money that could lead to its eventual shut down. You don't have to like the ads, but you literally signed up for this.
Two, according to your account you are an adult. You are capable of blocking blogs you don't like seeing, blocking tags you don't like, or even installing an ad blocker and circumventing the system that pays for the site you're actively using. Curate your own experiences my dude, and stop trying to force other people to do it for you.
Three, I like a lot of the stuff I've seen blazed to my dash -- so nah, you're just objectively wrong. Get a bigger sample size next time.
Now fuckle on off, Fuckalong Cassidy.

Dishwasher powder soap is the best thing I've found. Just soak the jar in some water with dishwasher soap over night and the label will either be floating in the water or totally dissolve. And the adhesive will be totally gone too. This works best with papery labels. If they're plastic you have to peal that off first and then the soap removes the glue.

It’s a hard path we’ve chosen

Also same. I have a shed full of lilac branches that I keep saying are going to be for wood working projects, but I know I saved them for wands. I would love to use a wand, but I don't think I've ever had a reason for one in the 20 years I've been witching.
But, my good witches, may I make a suggestion? I might be a witch, but just as much, I'm a crafter, maker and artist. I'd like to introduce you to WAND CLUB!
youtube
This is Miscast, one of my favorite crafting channels. Trant and his friends from various other crafting channels are all goofy nerds, and I love them. They mostly focus on RPGs, fantasy stuff, and tabletop wargames, but often times they just make stuff for fun, art, or the sake of making something.
The suggestion I'd like to make is "Why not make a wand for fun?" Make a wand because it's cool, or you want a neat prop of your own, or you want to dabble in some wood working or model making or painting. There's all kinds of crafts that can go into making a fun wand.
It's really easy to think that you have to incorporate something like a wand into your witchcraft, otherwise what's the point of having it? But also you can just make one for fun. And if down the road you find that you have a need for a wand in your witchcraft, you either already have one (or 10. Crafting is addictive), or you have experience making wands and your official "made specifically for witchcraft" one will be that much better.
I want to live in a world where wands are collected like tarot cards. I don't divine very often, but I love the artwork.
I hate that I find magic wands so heckin' nifty but also I can't really think of anything to do with them.
