friendly reminder that charles ryder and sebastian flyte met bc sebastian puked into his window.
it's not a meet-cute, it's a meet-gross.
(except jeremy irons played him both annoyed and as if he had just seen the most mesmerizing creature on earth. basically, charles heard the wedding bells right there.)

I actually liked this one less than the first one, even though it's much more popular. I also felt like they had a lot less budget than for the one before.
one of the things I really liked though, was that dr marcus was not a love interest and kirk even left saavik alone. I really love this new version of kirk (even though canonically he would've been with this antonia woman from generations at that time). it's almost as if one particular relationship made him rethink things…
there were some quite nice spirk-y scenes in the sense that they were very flirty the whole time imo, but in general not a lot of scenes between spock and kirk alone. but here are a few that were definitely something: spock giving kirk his birthday present and "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times - message, spock?". insert kirk smirk here. then in spocks quarters, his throaty "jim" that I cannot see in a friendship way since the turbolift scene in and the children shall lead anymore (even though it was much less throaty this time) and then saying "I have been and always shall be yours". and in both these scenes spock implicates that he regrets kirk took the promotion and went back to earth, which is also the reason they are not spending time together anymore. this can be interpreted as friends, but it wouldn't be me if I didn't see it in a different light. to me, they seem like two people who have broken up amicably a while ago (as opposed to the motion picture where they seemed like they had had a messy breakup). like they were just in different places in their lives but still don't want to close that door for good. spock also seems pretty open with his emotions in their private moments in this movie. and you know we love lowkey smirking spock :)) later spock's "be safe captain" - "yes WE will make sure to be safe". and of course kirk kicking several lower deckers away to get to dying spock. so in the end, there was quite a bit!
only the death scene was a bit lackluster to me. I know people love this scene, but somehow it didn't touch me like I thought it would. it felt like the actors knew spock was gonna return in the next movie and it was not too well written imo. it also makes no sense to me why saavik (a vulcan!) cried at spocks funeral but everyone else was pretty ok. I mean kirk choked back a few tears but in general his reaction was pretty tame. it would've been more kirk like (and to my liking) to smash everything. you know, like he did almost every time he lost a random woman he had just met... in general, I didn't fully understand why spock was sacrificing himself in the first place, in the sense that I have no idea what he actually did in the chamber.
to end on a positive note though, I enjoyed the concept as well as some scenes, to me it just could've been better executed as a whole.

I never thought I would see a guy having sex with a machine in star trek…
oh wait. I already have. (I'm talking about v'ger in the form of ilia, and decker, in case you were wondering.)

this was not the best movie I've ever watched, but it was enjoyable! bc of the extremly long winded animation scenes (the flight around the enterprise; the whole journey through the nebula to v'ger) - I'm talking several minutes - the movie was much longer than neccessary though. at the end I said the plot was probably half of the movie and my dad said, deadpan, that it was exactly 40 minutes of plot, so basically a regular episode, which I somehow found hilarious.
I thought the jump to more budget plus the late 70s was nice on the eyes. as much as I like the nostalgia of tos, I could take this much more seriously (not that that's the most important thing about star trek).
spirk-wise there were some scenes worth noting, but not a lot. I only remember when kirk was so excited to see spock as he arrived and shouting „spock! spock!“ over and over again, which was adorable. and then spock tumbling out of the v'ger entrance in his ev suit and kirk catching and holding him reminded me a bit of tom and b'elanna in day of honor, so that's sweet as well. and of course spock telling "jim" about "this simple feeling" while holding hands (touch telepath and such…) when spock was lying in sickbay. it actually mirrored the scene in the last tos episode imo, where kirk (in dr lesters body) is lying in sickbay and talks to and mind melds with spock.
but in general I feel like they had very few conversations and no private ones at all in this one bc spock was not xo, which is a pity not only for spirk fans, as it's usually a tos staple!
but I had a longer train of thought about spock and kirks relationship after that - even though it's useless as they never become a canon romantic couple - and I don't feel like it wouldve really fit within the story. like they would never find a way to be together for long bc of their careers and living in different places and kirk being so non-monogamous and spock seemingly very monogamous. (even though - shocker - kirk had no love interest in this movie!) so my headcanon is that they have an on again-off again kind of situationship, with spock not being able to let go for good but kirk being unable to (and not wanting to) commit even though they have this deep emotional connection and love for one another. so anyway, per usual I thought about this way too long…
on a completely different note, leonard nimoy's new teeth bothered me immensely in this movie. they all have different voices bc they aged and the microphones are probably a different technology, but he suddenly got a noticeable lisp and this kind of asmr saliva mouth sound. ...can you tell I'm neurodivergent?
btw I'm planning to get into tas at some point, just for the fun of it. probably when lower decks has ended (which I hope is not soon).

Not enough people talking about how in amok time after Spock thought he killed Kirk he implied he was gonna kill himself ("live long and prosper" "I shall do neither") like. Hey Spock what was that. And it never comes up again

I haven't seen saltburn (yet?), but it's basically brideshead revisited, set in the 2000s - right?

actually, a great last episode, even though it probably wasn't intended as such: kirk (in the form of dr lester) recounting some of his adventures with spock. saying "the man who knows the captain best in the universe" and the mind meld after which spock knows that is truly kirk. like what could possibly be so significant, yet secret that he could only verify it with a mind meld? and what a tender moment they share afterwards. it's a little sad they were only able to have this bc kirk was in a female read body, but it almost feels like roddenberry wants us to know about these two…
also very interesting that dr lester despises their (I'm just gonna use gender neutral pronouns here, don't pitchfork me) own "womanhood", which can really be read from a queer perspective and sounds a lot like a trans realisation. or, more from a feminist pov, it at least sounds like the wish womanhood didn't exclude being able to become a leader (in this case starship captain). and the undoubtly homoerotic moment between a clearly in love dr coleman and dr lester (in kirk's body) where he gently puts a hand on his shoulder. and what would be more like tos than an episode fit for pretty obvious queer reading?
and with that my vaguely analytical-turned-spirk-recap of tos has come to an end. what a rollercoaster. except not bc I plan to watch all of the og star trek movies pre-tng as well, even if my dad is only mildly excited about the prospect. so look forward to more (spirk) observations!

I gotta say, I was just reminded this universe has a lot of lore. specifically talking about the history of westeros. I always forget this is a book series originally (even though I think season 7 was already not based on the books anymore).
I love how all these characters finally meet after like 7 seasons. really one of the slowest paced fantasy out there (ok, that I know of, at least), but with GOT, I don't really mind it.
and tyrion has such a good heart, he really doesn't want jamie or even the lannister soldiers to die. jamie is not a horrible person either at this point, but I think he would kill tyrion if he had the chance.

wait, how are yara greyjoy, ellaria sand and the sand snakes not dead? didn't we watch them die? (this happens when I take a month long break from a show mid season.)

"kirk and his very attractive friend", yes I agree. in general, I'm so spirk now though, I can't unsee it.
I love that they did these pretty obvious episodes about discrimination/equality in season 3. it was like they had nothing to lose anymore. also, the art protest looks eerily familiar. hello, last generation...

I watched seasons 1-3 of boardwalk empire at such a pace that I was somehow unable to make notes for tumblr. this is always a good sign since it means I loved it, but I also usually want to comment on it. I'm definitely planning on doing that with season 4.
generally speaking though, I went on an emotional rollercoaster with this show. it feels like a less artsy (but still well made), less depressing (at least season 1) and a little more action fueled version of peaky blinders. even though boardwalk empire was first of course. I'm always surprised at how much I like gangster tv shows though?
character-wise I weirdly liked nucky the most at first bc he seemed like a decent guy who is just protecting those around him through some illegal schemes, but now… he got a lot more violent in season 3 and he acts like an asshole 90% of the time. I also loved his and margaret's (for some reason the name doesn't fit her at all imo, I've never felt that about a character before) romance at the beginning, even though the power dynamic was a little problematic from the get go. but I think after this season they make a better, bc more equal, match than earlier when they were still nice to one another bc they are both resentful and somewhat power hungry (even if margaret does it on a much smaller scale). maybe they'll find back together?
but my favorite character for sure is richard harrow. at first I thought he was too much of a sidekick, but then he finally got more depth. and even though he is literally a killer, he is probably the most decent person in this show. and we love to see him happy :)
I also started to like eli and van alden (!) this season. (maybe also bc van alden is very autistic coded.) rothstein and meyer lansky I kind of liked from the start. oh and a.r. and lucky luciano are lovers, you can't tell me otherwise.
ok that's it for now. I'm pretty excited about what's to come, even though some of the plot choices were a bit questionable (end of season 2 especially) and per usual, I spoilered myself a lot, so I already know which of my favorites will die…

the songs in this episode were unironically great - just regular 60s music, but really good imo. and I love that the hippies were portrayed as really intellectual people, specifically bc spock agrees with their ideals.
in general, actually not a badly constructed episode? I can't explain how, but I was really focused on the plot in this one. sometimes I zone out during tos episodes, oops...

I just realized what was wrong with this season (and probably season 3 as well, I don't quite remember): it wasn't funny. I mean there were a few one-liners from aimee, but apart from that it was pretty unfunny. and I distinctly remember crying-laughing at season 1 and 2. (I honestly think about "wash you hands you dirty pig!" "I didn't do a poo!…I was crying" so often.)

I really thought this was a very good and concilatory ending to the show, even if I wasn't blown away by the last two seasons.
I did enjoy some parts of this season, but I think plot-wise it went a bit into all directions from mid season 3 (not just bc eric and adam broke up). for example I liked aimee and isaac together in the end, but it was also really random.
I do think this one was better than season 3. but at any rate, I think it's great that this show is ending on such a good note. there were cleary many of the og actors/characters already missing so I think the story is really over and told in its entirety. I think it's good that at least some shows are ending at the right time (or at least a bit after)!
I'm honestly not sure if I want to continue watching teenie drama shows though. maybe I'm finally finished processing my school/teenage years... but who knows, I might find another good one.

I'm not sure if it's true, but I have a feeling that the color filter is a lot more on this season. like it's a bit too much at times imo.

I think this was the best episode of season 4 yet, bc it had a serious main plot, not 10 different little shallow stories. and it was so sweet when the teachers came! I forgot how pretty miss sands is. and isaac is also really good looking, I think. he really had a glow up since season 1/2.
I also loved that they experimented a bit in this, like the god dreams or jackson's hallucinations. cinematically really well made as well.
