Christmas illustration from last year that I didn’t post here yet. This one is actually a redraw of an old image I made back in 2009. It’s fun to compare them and see the improvement and style change over the years.
2009 vs 2022
Old made with Photoshop / New made with Procreate

A whole bunch of adorable veggie friends for you! Don’t worry about not being able to eat healthy anymore, my Grunlings aren’t actual food!
They are gentle spirits of nature and if someone is lucky enough to see or even befriend a Grunling, they can become incredibly supportive with gardening. ;) 🌱

Note
your post about DeviantArt's AI-related changes is outright misinformation and misrepresentation. try doing some damned fact-checking before CAUSING the exact "frenzy" you mentioned. (in future, try pausing and seeking out primary sources and official sources before you go spreading panic and outrage. attempting to correct it after-the-fact does not undo the damage.)
Other than an accidental misinterpretation of one technicality that I fixed as soon as someone corrected me - please show me what information on my final version of the post is incorrect because I'm more than happy to update it. So far the the current situation is as follows to my knowledge:
❌ DeviantArt will not use your deviations directly for their AI image generators
(I updated the post because I was wrong about this in particular initially, but I said from the get-go to look out for updates as I get more information)
✅ They are however using third parties for their image generator that are known to have unethically sourced data, and are known to have previous issues with art theft
✅ You do have to fill in a manual form to prevent your artist username/alias being used as a prompt, including any evidence that they want you to provide.
This means anyone who is unaware, deceased, or unable to be approved could hypothetically have their art style used as a prompt if they're not opted out. This is how it is phrased by DeviantArt themselves explaining the form:
Tumblr media
Whether or not they credit artists in the description doesn't really matter because many artists don't want to be used in image generators at all, this should be opt-in manually if they're trying to be ethical like they claim.
I tested out the generator myself and was quickly able to mimic the style of a popular artist:
Tumblr media
Original artist: Peter Mohrbacher
Tumblr media
I pretty much solely used his name for the prompt, which I think pretty clearly demonstrates that the AI has recognised his name and pulled his art from somewhere on the internet to generate what it did
✅ Initially every user was automatically opted-in to start giving permission to third-party AI developers to use their work, and for a time this had to be undone manually one deviation at a time until they changed it due to backlash.
This would have meant if there was no backlash and they kept this policy that anyone who was unaware, deceased, or unable to access their account would have had their artworks flagged as okay for use in AI training.
Now that it has been reversed it is no longer an issue, but the lack of foresight from the team on this was callous. It also however has not been reversed for the use of artists names as a prompt, you still have to ask to be opted out.
All in all the situation is largely the same as I initially posted, DeviantArt launched an AI art generator in a very abrupt and unclear way and if you don't fill in the right forms your artist name and style can be used, and they will be pulling from third parties that are known to have mass collected images from the internet without explicit permission.
This still sucks and there's still plenty to be concerned about here, even if they have good intentions it's been horribly implemented and has ethical issues.

PSA to artists on DeviantArt
DeviantArt announced their own AI model that is to be trained on artworks ALREADY uploaded to the platform. You can opt your artworks out one by one, but by default they are included in the data set!!!
I'd recommend opting-out with all your artworks ASAP if you don't want to contribute and letting DeviantArt know you're not happy with their decision. You can read more here! In case you are unfamiliar with this topic or unsure of your stance, I'd recommend this video.

tumblr guide for new users:
1) there is only one algorithm for your dashboard, and you can turn it off in settings. can't stress this enough. if you turn it off, your dashboard is in chronological order of posts and reblogs from people you follow
2) because of the lack of algorithm, likes do nothing. if you want more people to see a post, you have to reblog it so it goes on your follower's dashes
3) the vast majority of posts on a person's blog tend to be reblogs. think 90% or so. some of those will have that person commenting on it, and more will have tags
4) comments stay on reblog chains, while tags only show up on your reblog of that post. it's kind of like a whisper voice. in either case, both op and the person you reblogged from see that in their notifications
5) tags don't go in the body of the post. writing "staying in #lasvegas" won't make it appear in the las vegas tag, it'll just look weird
6) it's totally normal to reblog and post multiple things in one day. it's normal to reblog the same post twice in a row. it's normal to have 100 posts+reblogs in a day. post limit (the total number of original posts and reblogs) for a single day is 250. you heard me. 250. go hog fucking wild
7) it defaults to having a visible likes tab on your blog (but only on your blog, not the dashboard) but most people toggle it off
8) "tumblr clout" is a fucking joke. no one can see your follower count, and no one makes money here. there are no influencers. enjoy not giving a shit about maintaining a public persona. it's all anonymous and your employers won't find you here

I worked on another card game for XYZ Game Labs. The game is called Cultivate and it's all about collecting and building your little succulent garden, but you have to watch out for those pesky bugs. 🐛 This is the promotion image I made for the game along with some of the succulents I illustrated for the playing cards. I really enjoyed working on all the plants and adding tons of fun little details.
(Game is not in production yet).

I haven’t posted in awhile so I’m going to try and catch up with some of my favorite pieces that I made from the past year.
This illustration was originally based on the Friday Doodle Club's week 8 theme: Clever / Gardening / Astronaut over on Instagram. I wanted to make a larger 2-page spread piece for my portfolio, so it took longer to complete but I'm really happy with how it turned out! The astronaut is based off of my son, he's my little muse. Made in Procreate.
