we got over Saved by a Stranger too quickly. i decline to accept that this was written about anything but personal experience since the documentary. maybe the sequence of action isn’t true, but the feelings behind it seem to be. and it’s such a moment…

the anonymity that he doesn’t have - I don’t even know her name, but I was saved by a stranger. isn’t that the fan experience? we don’t know him, but people tell him he saved them over and over again.

the on the brink sensation he’s not allowed to express - the night she talked me down. I imagine it’s challenging to be an eldest sibling, a role model for millions, and try to shake that indebted obligatory sense of having to be solid. he can’t tell fans - younger or older - that romanticise and idolise him or his journey how tough it really is, how dark the dark moments really were. he’s said it before — ‘no one wants to hear that’— so he wrote it down. explicitly stating this song is a concept - which may also be true - serves the need to reassure.

someone else’s fantasy is nothing like reality, I know that - the stories we tell ourselves about his life probably aren’t true and the minefield that is to navigate seems like a monumental headfuck; this can be boiled down to ‘don’t believe your own hype,’ but I do sometimes wonder how difficult it must be to have your life, your story, the sum of your moments written and immortalised by others with no regard for the truth, or the truth you want to tell, how fame is both permanent and fickle, how fans still quote interviews from 2013 that he can’t even remember - for a moment stay with me, and let me feel the freedom that you’re holding - this is vicarious living, this is grass is greener mentality, this is don’t let me go, don’t leave, let me see the world like you do

people commenting on darren and ca$h’s relationship and completely pinning the blame on darren is fucked. darren clearly isint being pushy out of purely selfish reasons it’s because they literally cannot conceptualize someone valuing them in a partnership outside of sex. To them, they are hard to love and as a consequence they feel as though sex is the only thing they have to offer and value. Thats why they are so pushy towards ca$h about it. Yes, some of their behaviour is aphobic but it’s not coming from a place of willful ignorance it’s coming from a deep rooted fear that without sexual connection they are worthless. Acting as if ca$h is the only one hurt by this is so near sighted and quite frankly just shitty, one sided analysis that pins anger on a character that doesn’t deserve it.

Louis says in the IGTV segment on Wembley (thanks to @elceeu2morrow for the transcription):

“Tour in a general has been bigger and better than I imagined or speculated. This venue does mean a lot to me. I’ve had a lot of special moments here, so. This is almost the epitome of the idea of the tour. And in general, me career, you know, going really well at the moment— better than maybe I imagined it, it would have done, a couple of years ago. And I know when I walk out tonight, that it’s not just, that it’s not— ironically— it’s not just the size. It is, there’s a feeling here, and I’ll feel like a sense of accomplishment when I walk out tonight. I’ve done really special things here, you know, and over the course of me career. So to be here again, but completely on me own for a sold-out tour show is. Yeah, it feels maddening.”

Watching this segment, and trying to understand what Louis meant when he said that his career was “better than what he imagined two years ago”— when it took weeks to sell out 2000 capacity venues in the USA, and he was scheduled for 2000 capacity venues in London, when Walls fell off the charts after two weeks, when Syco was being absorbed into Sony and Arista basically disappeared for him after Walls was released, when his tour was postponed yet again, indefinitely, after years of waiting— there is a sense of catharsis and triumph finally to arrive at Wembley Arena, having sold it out in hours.

This short clip has the same feeling as the AFHF documentary— one of relief for having survived, and joy for thriving. And most of all, gratitude to fans for seeing who he is and continuing to support him.

Maybe because of what Louis mentioned about his history at Wembley, the clips showcase more 1D music than usual, and the lyrics he includes make up a poignant love letter to the fans. Here they are in sequence:

i really hate that abortion legality often boils down to “men shouldn’t make laws about women’s bodies” because while cisnormativity and misogyny stemmed from that is a role played in this, it ignores the fact that men are also affected by this and also there are female senators that would gladly vote to make abortion illegal. and it also ignores the other forms of oppression that also play into this like classism, racism, ableism… nobody should make it illegal for someone to make a choice about their own body period
