Roommates with Benefits- WTF is this lol
After nearly a year of radio silence from me, some trauma, and some disappointment, I come back to choices to see their most recent attempt at a college book.
Is MC good?  Absolutely not.
Is she an entertaining wreck? Indeed.
Now, I have like zero investment in this book, but isn’t MC like, a film major?  Why is she taking some random science class this far into her studies????
Tumblr media
I started at a 4 year immediately, so maybe it’s a bit different for transfers if her classes maybe didn’t transfer over completely, but I’m almost positive that at least in the US, you would primarily be taking your major courses.  Correct me if I’m wrong, haha.
Also, for someone who is supposedly on a scholarship, MC is awfully unfazed by like, missing classes, pop quizzes, etc. for some guy she barely knows.  Idk, but Samira bringing up some valid points, lmao.  Not PB trying to put her in bad light for having the AUDACITY to question her friend’s judgement of some guy she just met.
It always surprises me how inaccurate PB gets their settings, especially that awkward ass class scene where Drew and MC are arguing at the beginning.  It’s not that serious, PB.  Lmao, the professor would just kick out MC.

You’re telling that a woman with a master’s degree in chemistry is totally fine with being “that home wrecking one who broke up a wedding and possibly a merger?” Right.

My reactions after chapter 1 for Sam and MC, respectively:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you are interested in reading my thoughts on this latest installment of TNA, I’ll see you on the other side.  Spoilers ahead.
PB continues to amaze me 😂.   Homegirl Actually, this MC doesn't deserve to be called that.  PB, you're telling me that this main character, who has a master's degree in chemistry I might add, first thought after Sam fires them is to help him look for a new nanny rather than look for employment in their field😂 😂 😂????   PB's audacity never fails. They really said she’s #girlboss for her masters in chemistry, and promptly did nothing with it  😂
Listen, the entire relationship is just askljfd;lsaj;lasjf now.  The levels of WTF that first chapter was off the charts, especially if you chose more tame options in regards to Sam.  PB really thought we were going be hooting and hollering with things like this being said:
Tumblr media
or
Tumblr media
Like WHO is proofing these stories?????  I understand completely that I am not the target audience here, and if “If YoU DoN’T liKe iT, dOn’T ReAD iT!”, but c’mon let’s be real.  If the story was well done, I would sing a different tune, and give them the benefit of the doubt, but nah, PB doesn’t deserve that.  It’s getting real goofy in here now with TNA, PB.  Real goofy.
Tumblr media
This has been your salty review of chapter one, by yours truly.  :)  Please stay tuned for weekly rants about this story.

A Critique No One Asked for
PB, when you use things +Romance, +Desire, or +Hype , if you have no way for the player to gauge or keep track of it within the app, that pop-up means NOTHING to me.  Spoilers for some VIP titles.  You’ve been warned.
Maybe this is my inner science major coming out (I’m very fond of graphs, tables, etc.), but with recent additions to the PB line up, I’ve noticed there is almost no way to tell who you’re most romantically involved with, how well your restaurant score is, etc.  Unless you’re keeping track on paper, there is no way you can look it up within the game (please correct me if I’m wrong).  A lot of times, your left like this wondering how well you’re doing:
Tumblr media
Now, I understand that you might be thinking: “Why does this even matter?” .  In some ways it doesn’t, but to me, it’s starting to emphasize some pretty integral problems with the more lackluster titles.  At the core of my beef, it comes down to mixed messages and consequences for actually making, you guessed it, CHOICES.
On one hand, when it comes to romance, it almost seems that it doesn’t matter if you have romance points with the LIs.  You can literally start the romance from any point, and they will act like you’ve been romancing them from the beginning.  Heck, in some cases, romance points don’t seem to matter at all (I’m looking at you, TNA & OH).  Is the little heart next the dialogue option not enough to tell us that is a romantic option???? Like no romance from the recent titles are locked out if you don’t have enough romance points.  Does the LI behave differently if you don’t pick romance options?  I don’t know.  If they do, there is no way to check if our points matter because we can’t even look up this basic information.  You see what I mean: mixed signals.  Like does it matter if I have romance points, or not? Why put a pop up if it doesn’t matter?  You tell me.
However, when the pops-up do matter, as in the case of the interviews in Slow Burn, when you really need to check to see how well you’re doing, you can’t.  I’m literally left in the dark to figure out how many pluses I need to get to succeed.  Surely, they must mean something if we can get minuses, right?   Is this going to affect the story or not?  Because I can’t keep track, this won’t negatively impact my story, right?  Again, mixed signaling.
This is why I say it means nothing to me if I can’t keep track.  Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand that obviously a story element vs romance is a no brainer: of course the pluses related to the story are going to matter!  Yet in the case of the romance, it doesn’t matter, but in the case of interviews, it does.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s sloppy and nonsensical.  Just like this critique :)
So do the pop ups indicate significance to our choices or they don’t mean anything at all, PB?  Y’all looking real strange right now.
Tumblr media
I can write an entire rant about some goofy things I’ve been seeing, but I’ve wasted enough of your time. 😀

MC is a huge hypocrite for criticising Sofia but I think Robin is also a huge hypocrite for criticising MC when he is doing the same thing as her?
Robin is a touchy subject with me because I actually liked them WAY more than Sam.  So it pains me to say it, but I wholeheartedly agree. 😭
It’s basically set in stone that they are the ones having the affair with Sofia, so it’s VERY hypocritical that Robin was criticizing MC when they themselves are also having an affair.  I hope MC has the option to call them out on it, honestly.
People are like this in real life, but this story already has downright CONFUSING and nonsensical story choices that Robin’s criticism just seems sloppy now.

@indiacater  When you put it like than it makes A LOT more sense and I hadn’t looked at it like that before.   That’s a good point!  I hadn’t thought about it from that aspect before  :)
I think my main issue is the inconsistency in the portrayal of the MC’s feelings regarding this entire affair on the writers part.  In many of the chapters, MC has a choice between agonizing, but not acting on her feelings, as you mentioned, or making the conscious choice to participate and not care about Sam’s engagement (for the most part).   I think the scenario you describe is perfect for an MC who has made choices to not act on her feelings, which makes her anger at Sofia justified.  However, in my opinion, playing as an unapologetic MC who carries on having an affair with Sam, regardless of Sofia’s feelings, makes her outrage seem extremely hypocritical.
I personally have chosen nothing but the professional options with Sam, but even then, I can sense the writers are deliberately trying to vilify Sofia for something Sam (not even MC, but Sam) is also doing even though Sofia has lied about her feelings.  Take MC out of the equation, and Sam and Sofia are basically carrying out the same act.  Neither has told the other that they aren’t in love with them (that we know of), both are holding up a front as couple, both are having affairs, etc.  I think the only distinction is that maybe Sam has some guilt (I think).
This entire thing is just one big mess, lol 😅
MC is over here having the AUDACITY to give Sofia the third degree for cheating even though she herself has fantasized/ lusted after/ kissed (or slept with) an engaged Sam.  MC is no saint either!  What type of Olympic sized mental gymnastics is MC doing to even be mad?  I’m over here like:

Noah’s really out here pulling on my heartstrings😭😭😭
His story’s just so moving, and heartbreaking that it has brought back so many memories and emotions of hearing and listening to students who had similar situations, and I’m over here like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I actually cried reading this chapter.
There’s so many students out there like Noah who’re trying to right the wrongs they’ve done, are looking out and trying to provide for their families, and who’re pushing to better themselves.  It would’ve been easy for him to just NOT care, but he didn’t take that way out.  He’s just needs that one adult figure in his corner to firmly push and encourage him onto the right path toward a bright future.
PB LET ME WRITE A LETTER OF REC FOR NOAH!!!

Me coming back being shocked as I catch up on the chapters, and seeing that Mason’s well written, flaws and all, when MC’s monologue/ dialogue isn’t messing up his development, and again showcasing how wholesome their friendship is.  Then Noah being amazing per usual, and understanding at the nightclub and sticking up for us despite only knowing us for like, a week, max.  They both have me like:
Tumblr media
This was my reaction in spite of the oddly aggressive adults, scenarios with said adults causing me to raise my eyebrows as to how any of them are are still employed in a nightclub, absence of Ava, and just the overall incompetence on PB’s part of writing a believable teenager in these chapters.   This was my reaction in spite of that!  Now PB’s gonna have them fight?!

I see a lot of good discussion regarding Mason’s house and circumstances regarding Principal Jennings salary.  I’ll throw in my unneeded two cents.  It’s pretty long.
FACTORS AFFECTING SALARY
So what many don’t know is that many principals have either a master’s degree or Ph.D in education/ administration in the United States.  Depending on the school district’s size, the state, and the school, a principal’s salary can vary drastically.  A principal in California won’t make the same as a principal in let’s say Virginia or Oklahoma.
Principals are the leaders and heads of the school, and a lot of responsibility falls on their shoulders.  When crap hits the fan, they’re the first who has to respond, and any problems at the school falls on them.  Because they have an advanced degree, are the de facto leader on campus, and hold astronomical amounts of responsibility, principals are the highest paid employee at a public high school in the United States.
BACKGROUND IN AIR FORCE
There’s also other factors that I’m sure PB didn’t take into account that can affect Principal Jennings salary (socio-economic status of the school, student body size, Principal Jennings years of experience, etc).  Also, keep in mind that Principal Jennings is an air force veteran and gets extra benefits from Veteran’s Affairs and this would actually increase his salary as well.  As you can tell, Mason’s family has a lot of things going on that can contribute to changes in living.
MASON’S FIVE STAR RESORT
Because of the reasons stated above, it is not uncommon for some principals to live a comfortable, and lavish lifestyle.  Their salary is a direct result of the work that they are responsible for, and they have a lot to lose as well if they mess up.
For purposes of this discussion, based on what I have seen of the school and story thus far, let’s just say that Principal Jennings is a principal in a large district, and the school has a large student body.  On average, Principal Jennings could be making well over $80,000 per year (last I looked up the average is like $94,000).  If this was a normal situation (not a work of fiction), the changes in Mason’s household is due to the fact that his father had a good increase in salary to afford a bigger house.  In addition, we don’t know if Mason’s parents are married or together, but if they are together and the other parent also works, both parent’s income would be combined, and they would be able to support a new lifestyle than what Mason had as a child.
However, the exact opposite could be said if Principal Jennings was a part of large, poorer district and school.  He wouldn’t be making nearly as much as previously mentioned.
IN CONCLUSION
Given that this is PB, and there will be some craziness involved as to why Mason’s family is all of a sudden loaded, this is probably not the reason behind Mason’s nice home.   Realism doesn’t make money.  It’s the drama that does, lol.
