Two of my favorite books from the last year or so have been Piranesi and The Goblin Emperor (perhaps a little hasty since I finished it only 10 hours ago, but oh my god it was so good), and I think the thing that I loved so much about them is that the protagonists are just so unequivocally NICE. Even when faced with all kinds of horrible things, betrayed by people they trusted, they choose to be compassionate. Piranesi with the Other, Maia even more so imo with all sorts of people who hated him from the start… it’s just so easy to love these main characters and root for them because of how they choose to be kind. Dark brooding protagonists are out I need more protagonists who are just nice people

locked myself into making dragons as Biologically Accurate as they can be for my fantasy world… why did i do this to myself man !!! the extent of my biology knowledge is whatever I remember from my last bio class 9 years ago, and whatever i learned from my geology classes in college (which is actually more than you’d expect). this is so difficult but by god i will make it work
anyway my dragons are descended from dinosaurs :) and they have feathers <3 and birds are their closest living relative! and their wings are their front legs. so i guess they’re wyverns. but I’m calling them dragons because i make the rules here

hello my friend, it has been a while! who are eska and mirya? are they dragons themselves? do they have friends? whats their vibe 🦋
hello hello friend!! I have typed up a response to this ask multiple times now but it’s ended up CRAZY long bc I can’t stop talking about these characters and my world building. so I’m gonna try to keep it as concise as I can now lol
also @daughterofsarenrae sent me essentially the same ask so I’m gonna answer both of these and just tag both of you in them lol
Eskerill (Eska to his friends!) and Mirya are two of the main characters for this story I have involving an order that can transform into dragons. Eska is part of the Sentinel Order, where members train to eventually undergo a ritual that gives them their ability to turn into a dragon. They basically exist to keep humans and dragons from killing each other (also, dragons are just animals in this world, not like ancient wise beings). But 30 years before the start of the story, the order was destroyed when an exiled Sentinel seized the throne of his nation, declared the Sentinels an enemy, and then took over most of the continent. Eska managed to miss all of this because said exiled Sentinel’s right hand trapped him in his dragon form, he forgot he was ever human in the first place… then 30 years later the other main character, Mirya, accidentally freed him by shooting him (iron and magic don’t mix). (Also, the Sentinel ritual causes them to age more slowly, so Eska’s like 52 throughout the story but appears like late 20s)
Mirya was born in the new Emerindian Empire a couple of years after the war against the Sentinels began. She was raised by her father traveling all around the empire, and he taught her all about dragons even though they were declared a danger to humanity. He disappeared when she was 12, she eventually decided he must’ve left her because where else would he have gone (where indeed…), and 15 years later she works as a dragon hunter for the empire. This is how she comes across Eska, accidentally frees him from being trapped in his dragon form, and her dragon-hunting partner wants to turn him in for the GINORMOUS bounty on any Sentinels’ heads, but Mirya kinda impulsively stops her partner and she and Eska flee together. They go on the run, Eska wants to find any surviving Sentinels and defeat the ex-Sentinel king that kinda destroyed his world while he was gone, and Mirya is like oh my god it’s not that easy and you’re going to get us both killed. But she’s already betrayed the empire by helping him and will get killed if she’s caught so she might as well keep helping him 🤷🏼‍♀️
Okay that’s as concise as I can make this I think. I have a giant google doc where I have a ton of character info, a big timeline, other miscellaneous world info, and I was half tempted just to share that doc but I think I’ve boiled down the essentials here… now in the second ask I answer perhaps I’ll go more into the world building I have ?? Hope this wasn’t a total jumbled mess of my thoughts lmao
