here’s a semi-cursed anecdote:

my fam and i were listening to the RA audiobooks on a road trip. we were somewhere in book 3. my brother, who is two years younger and was 10ish at the time, had already read all the books. he and i were doing the dishes. i begged him to spoil the series for me. he told me that halt and pauline got married. i scolded him and told him to tell me REAL spoilers and not fake ones of halt and pauline marrying because wtf.

cue to seven years later and i’m still howling over the wedding, like “you’re getting a haircut” will just crack me up??? i need help.

also:

halt: what about duncan???

pauline: we’ll make him patron

halt: tf is a patron???

pauline: no idea, just made it up

week later, duncan’s PA, straight faced to Duncan: you gotta give them an expense present.

First they’re like “oh Halt has a new apprentice. poor thing.” Then he kills the kalkara and saves Halt’s life Then he thwarts Morgarath at the bridge and is kidnapped by skandians Then Halt commits treason and is banished from the country and expelled from the corps, all to go after the boy Then he not only turns out to be alive, but he plays a critical role in thwarting a temujai invasion AND forging an international treaty with the skandians

This all happens before any of the other rangers meet him in person

Firstly, more Gilan and Crowley scenes. Yes.

Keep in mind, this is still when Will revered Halt as a dark, mysterious, quasi-sorcerous unreadable entity. When he sees the two dunking on him he’s like :O

Will meeting other apprentices (new side characters!)

We learn that Halt’s teaching methods are unusually ruthless (it is not usual for the ranger to dismiss their housemaiden and make the apprentice do house chores). Gilan shudders at the memories of gathering water at 4AM on winter. Halt says it “builds character”.
