Had a date day with the hub yesterday: saw Oppenheimer (excellent film, btw) and afterwards, we hit up a nerd shop, where he got me this. ❤️🌙
Sailor Moon will always be special to me, no matter how many years pass. And even though this *might* be the rebooted version (I'm actually not sure, since she did have an Eternal form in the original series, too), I couldn't pass this up.

The artist who did the first-ever artworks of my characters recently discovered a drawing she'd done (and forgotten about) back in 2017.
I love, LOVE this picture of Phenex. 🔥❤️

It's so nice when I discover a new review for one of my books--especially one as thoughtful as this.

It's taken nearly 2 years between other, more pressing projects, but I finally finished Let Down Your Hair. (Thank the gods).
Now for a few days' rest, and then on to edits.

Apparently our last frost date moved to late May. I can't begin to express how irritating that is when all I want to do is PLANT ALL THE THINGS.
(There's more in my dining room. I might need help).

Nerd shirt moment. Hub got it for me while out of town (again). There was no Sailor Jupiter, unfortunately, but I couldn't say no to this.

I've talked myself out of writing ideas I love because I'm too afraid of what my audience will think and that I'll be vilified for writing just about anything that isn't low-rated fluff. The fear exists for both fanfic and original fiction. Do you have any advice on how to overcome that fear?
I don’t know that it needs to be overcome so much as ignored.

Here’s the deal. (And you must all imagine me being as serious about the following as you’ve ever heard me get, even though there will be cussing in this. (In fact, as as the continuity announcers say over here, “Adult language, violence and flashing lights from the outset…”)
First of all: The hell with your audience. (…This sentiment may sound rude or potentially self-destructive, but if you run this past most professional writers who routinely do work of higher-than-phoning-it-in level, I bet you’ll get a lot of agreement.) If you’re serious about writing well, your first duty is to please yourself. You are the only audience you have any business being concerned about.
Confused people, especially people with no interest in writing anything, may attempt to shove this insight aside as somehow egotistical or selfish or silly. Ignore them. They are missing the vital data that comes of being saddled with the desire to write (and to write well; I don’t think anyone sets out on purpose to write badly, though God knows it happens).
(ETA: Wow, I got kind of intense about this, and it goes on for a bit. So here’s a cut.)

(Re-posted from my FB author page *much* later. Why am I so bad at keeping up with this blog?)

Bit of writerly real-talk: Aside from a few bursts of enthusiasm here or there, much of my work for the past year or so has largely consisted of me going through the motions. This has been true for the last few months as well--so to not only have found that enthusiasm once again, but to fall back in love with what I'm working on is a pretty big deal.
It happens from time-to-time, and it's not exclusive to me in the least: a writer finds themselves adrift, either because they were very much in love with one of their books/series and are afraid of moving forward, or because they've been doing it for so long, they've forgotten why they decided to be a writer in the first place.
In my case, both apply. My work has consisted of editing a great deal more than it has of writing, and when you've edited the same story a multitude of times? Well, it tends to lose its savour.
Doing developmental edits on Arcane Guardian has changed that. For the first time since the first draft, I'm getting to do the *real* work: the creative work that allows me to think more critically, to revisit certain characters and places with more scrutiny, as if seeing them for the very first time. The work that allows me to do the thing I enjoy most--flesh out characters until they're not just words on paper, but three-dimensional, breathing beings, real as you or I.
All this is to say that I'm in a good place creatively right now, and I don't intend to squander it. ❤️

After a year (plus), finally decided to give the final trials another chance yesterday. Now the Master Sword is at its full potential, and I am no longer salty. 🥲 Anyone else stoked for when Tears of the Kingdom comes out?

After 4-5 years of on again, off again gameplay, I finally got all the korok...er, "seeds". 😅 (The Breath Companion app was a big help for the last couple hundred).
One of these days my little completionist heart will tackle the Trial of the Sword again, but after choking on the final stage last year...well, you could say I'm still pretty salty about it. 🙃

Encouragment for writers that I know seems discouraging at first but I promise it’s motivational-
• Those emotioal scenes you’ve planned will never be as good on page as they are in your head. To YOU. Your audience, however, is eating it up. Just because you can’t articulate the emotion of a scene to your satisfaction doesn’t mean it’s not impacting the reader.
• Sometimes a sentence, a paragraph, or even a whole scene will not be salvagable. Either it wasn’t necessary to the story to begin with, or you can put it to the side and re-write it later, but for now it’s gotta go. It doesn’t make you a bad writer to have to trim, it makes you a good writer to know to trim.
• There are several stories just like yours. And that’s okay, there’s no story in existence of completely original concepts. What makes your story “original” is that it’s yours. No one else can write your story the way you can.
• You have writing weaknesses. Everyone does. But don’t accept your writing weaknesses as unchanging facts about yourself. Don’t be content with being crap at description, dialogue, world building, etc. Writers that are comfortable being crap at things won’t improve, and that’s not you. It’s going to burn, but work that muscle. I promise you’ll like the outcome.
