idk if this is an unpopular opinion or not, because i’ve seen a lot of people say stuff like “percy knows better than to go against annabeth”

but see, most people - anyone with a brain, really - are way too scared to challenge annabeth. because 99% of the time, she’s right. she’s always the most intelligent person in the room. shes not only logical and strategic, but she’s sharp, cunning, and even manipulative if she has to be. (as we’ve seen when she’s faced monsters). no one goes against her. one wants to, no one dares.

expect percy. if there’s one thing he knows how to do, it’s argue with annabeth. it’s like breathing. but unlike when they were kids, they don’t truly fight over stupid things. sure, they bicker and squabble over little things, because that’s who they are as a couple. but percy is the only person who will actually challenge her on something real. something big. he doesn’t do it lightly, because he knows how smart she is. but if he truly believes there’s another angle to something, or that she’s wrong because maybe she doesn’t have all the information, or maybe his heart is just in a different place - he’ll go against her. we see it in mark of athena a couple times. (their face-off kinda puts hazel in a trance). in BotL, there’s an argument between them, and i remember it’s stated that watching them argue is like watching an intense tennis match. its heated and fast paced. people make fun of percy for being dumb, and yet percy is the only one that can keep up with annabeth. he knows her better than anyone. he doesn’t think the same as her, but he knows how she thinks. so yeah, he will call her out. he’ll tell her he disgrees. he’ll even tell her that she’s wrong. and people think he’s crazy when he does it.

but annabeth respects the hell out of him for it. and while she might dismiss anyone else immediately, she won’t with him. because she respects him tremendously, and knows if he’s challenging her, there’s something to it. it doesn’t mean she’s gonna let him win, or that she’s gonna back down, because they are both ridiculously stubborn and determined. but he’ll go head to head with her. he’ll have a screaming match with her. and she loves him for it. she respects him for it. and she finds it ridiculously attractive.

because percy and annabeth are equals.

Hades offering them something to eat literally killed me. Hades is like "the smart one's gone" and immediately tried to keep them there forever.

there’s something about poseidon showing up for sally.

luke tells percy that they burn what they’ll miss most so that gods will know that what they’re saying is important so they’re really listen.

but sally burns ice cream. ice cream that she has no attachment to. it’s not even baby percy’s ice cream. it’s just random leftover ice cream that she grabbed from a pile of dirty dishes.

the ice cream could not be more unimportant to sally. in the grand scheme of things, the ice cream is nothing.

but poseidon comes to her anyway. he shows up immediately after probably the most lackluster offering sally could give. he shows up anyway.

just…there’s something about poseidon showing up for sally.

if you asked me last week to write a satirical example of what the procrustes scene might look like based on how the show has gone so far i might have written that percy walks in and the first thing he says is "you're procrustes. son of poseidon and murderer of travelers. the beds are a trap. that's how you do it." and i would have felt like i was being kinda mean and cynical but no that's the first fucking minute of this episode lmao

Percy was so infatuated this episode man. I’m not saying it’s inherently romantic, cause they are twelve and their friendship comes first and is actually so much more important than their romantic relationship. But he just seemed to really like talking to and being around Annabeth, which I loved to see because sure you could look at it as a crush but I saw it as a boy who has never had a female friend before and has realized just how cool she is. He just seems to like her and they seem like such friends now that they’re so fun to watch (not that they weren’t before, but now it’s not as angsty and harsh).

My favorite relationships, the best ones, are the ones rooted in friendship and built on a strong, trusting foundation. Sometimes it’s more important to have that friendship than a relationship, especially in situations as intense and dangerous as the ones they face.

The fact that both of their nicknames were used in sentences resembling and basically explaining themselves. Annabeth is frustrated with Percy for sacrificing himself for her and he’s getting ready to do it again. He’s putting himself in a situation where he will most certainly die again and though his actions are brave, they can also be seen as foolish and dense. She’s trying to convey that, to tell him that she’s not going to let him be a Seaweed Brain again by sacrificing himself for her.

Percy is turning to Annabeth after having it proven to him again and again that she is intelligent and strategic and trustworthy. He is putting his faith in her and her decisions, asking her advice because of how much he believes it will be right. He has confidence in her, in her plans and knowledge and ability to see the right way. He’s relying on her Wise Girl decision and opinion because he trusts her to know the right answer.

That’s why there’s no need for fanfare or triumph when they say these nicknames because the nicknames speak for themselves. They are literally a compliment within a teasing remark.

something about Hephaestus saying "you're a good kid, Annabeth" really stands out to me. he didn't point out the very obvious about her, like her intellect and interest in his creations, or her hubris in thinking she could dismantle the chair. he said that she's a good kid. because Hephaestus was mistreated by the gods. because Annabeth was shunned by Athena. because he believes that gods shouldn't treat their own children like that and he wants to be better. because he knows how much it means to a little girl who's fought for approval from her own mother her whole life, whose father neglected her. because he wants to break the cycle. don't touch me
