Chapter 1

Crowflight stood over his breakfast and watched all four Clans going about their first day in their new home.

Unfamiliar scents and sounds tickled his nose and ears, brought by the chilly wind blowing over the lake. He found himself unable to taste his blackbird as he looked down over the hills towards the water, his paws tingling with an eagerness to explore that was almost overpowering.

He knew every cat around him was feeling it, too – after their long, arduous journey through the mountains, no cat seemed capable of sitting still. The devastation and hopelessness of the old forest was long behind them, and ahead was nothing but new possibilities.

“-and your mentor shall be Lionheart.” A fluffy gray kitten rushed forward to touch noses with the larger golden tom, garnering a few laughs from the crowd. “Graypaw! Graypaw!” The clan cheered. Tigerclaw’s paw’s itched as he called out the new apprentice’s name with the rest of the clan. He had been dropping hints to Redtail that they should try and retake Sunningrocks soon, he was counting on Redtail saying no so that when he went to ask Bluestar, he would be more convincing. Not that his reasons were unfounded, he had a bone to pick with Riverclan. Two prey with one swipe, deal with Riverclan for murdering Thistleclaw and dealing with Redtail for being a traitor. As the clearing emptied, cats going about their days, Tigerclaw hurried to follow Bluestar into her den, muttering an apology to Lionheart for ignoring his request to pair up their apprentices for the day. Graypaw and Ravenpaw could get to know each other later, Tigerclaw had more important things to do. “Did you have something to say, Tigerclaw? Or do you plan on just standing there?” Tigerclaw gave his pelt a shake and sat down, “My apologies, I was thinking.” “About what? You don’t usually show up unannounced to share your everyday thoughts with me” Bluestar purred in amusement. “We need to reclaim Sunning Rocks, and soon.” Tigerclaw replied seriously. Bluestar sighed, “I know Tigerclaw, but newleaf is late this year. The prey pile is barely stocked most days and I just don’t think our warriors are ready for that, and after so much death already… I don’t think it’s worth the risk.” Tigerclaw almost hissed, “Not worth the risk! Bluestar, you have to-” “When newleaf sets in and Thunderclan has had a quarter-moon of full bellies, then we can reconsider extending our territory.” “But Bluestar, this isn’t just about territory! A half moon ago, I found Thistleclaw dead in the jaws of the Riverclan leader, they will see us as spineless cowards if we don’t retaliate over that!”

I love this! I hated how everyone seemed to just accept Crookedkits renaming.

The whole Clan had been behaving strangely, Rainflower thought, as she emerged from the nursery that morning. Oakkit had woken before her to go play with Volekit, Beetlekit, and Petalkit in the farther side of camp. Echomist was gone as well, but the hollow feeling of the nursery followed the gray she-cat outside as she observed her fellow cats hustle and bustle this way and that like a beehive. It seemed relatively late in the morning or early in the afternoon, but nonetheless, Rainflower had slept later than she had intended.

She nodded to Shimmerpelt on her way to the fresh-kill pile, but the glossy black she-cat ignored her with a flounce of her tail. She chirruped a cheerful greeting to Softpaw and Whitepaw, but the two apprentices picked their share of fish and joined their mentors for a meal without reply. Rainflower glanced all around; the camp seemed practically deserted now that she was awake. However, all eyes seemed to be on her, and it was not a friendly or welcome look.

Despite his knowledge of the future, Stoneheart still couldn’t help but feel a lump in his throat as he beheld ShadowClan’s camp for the first time in nearly two whole moons. He hadn’t realized just how much he’d miss it when he left for the journey to the lake – as he followed Pansytail towards the Clanrock, his heart felt dizzyingly light.

I’ve been thinking recently about how Ashfur drags Squirrelflight into hell, Hades drags Persephone into hell, and if Sandstorm were alive for this arc she, just like Demeter, would tear the fucking world apart to get her baby girl back from the man who wants to possess her for her beauty but doesn’t care about her well-being.
