The treatment of slave cabins, especially in the last ten years, reveals clear ambivalence on the part of site staff. On the one hand, the cabins are increasingly valued for their authenticity, and their role in telling a more inclusive story of slavery. Several sites that previously possessed cabins that were unused or in remote areas, have recently brought them to the central area of these sites; and several sites that had no cabins have since acquired them, or built reconstructions. On the other hand, the cabins are still highly marginalized overall, perhaps because too much attention to them threatens to raise issues around inequality, racism and gender during slavery – and about the link between contemporary racial inequality and slavery – that are believed best left alone.

Thus we learn language through the learning of the ways in which it is used. Words are not simply descriptive labels but rather prompts and cues. It is the use of a term that defines it, not its etymology. The meaning of a term, a phrase or a word is the product of its accumulated usage

In 1937, Washington began an aggressive campaign to encourage Dust Bowlers to adapt planting and plowing methods that conserved the soil. Once again farmers ran their tractors from dawn to dusk, this time to prevent barren fields from blowing. In 1938, the massive conservation crusade had reduced the amount of blowing soil to 65 percent.

Air pressure is often misunderstood because of our personal experience with pressure involving solids pressing against us, or our bodies pressing against something because of gravity acting on us. Since the molecules of solids are bonded together in a single unit, they act as a single unit. Under the influence of gravity the entire object is pulled downward and exerts a downward pressure. In gases, on the other hand, each tiny molecule acts independently. Gravity pulls the object down; but since it is hurling through space, the effect is like that of gravity acting on a baseball speeding toward home. The ball sinks in a downward trajectory but still exerts a sizeable horizontal force, as any professional catcher will attest. Think of gases as millions of tiny baseballs flying in all directions at the same time.

In fact, as she sometimes complained, she was raised to be a mere brood mare, an instrument of Bene Gesserit eugenics, rather than a person.

In the Sisterhood school, she had been raised to asses details objectively, to detach personal feelings and find the best answer. Now, though, the question was difficult. Bene Gesserit training cautioned against the weakness of love. Some Sisters took that to mean they should never open their hearts, should remain cold, aloof, and shallow. Other Sisters, though, argued that experiencing love was a critical part of the human experience, so long as they did not succumb to it, did not let love become a weakness. It was a fine line.

Let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors. Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths and encourage the arts and commerce.

We now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. Three of these involved our own country. Despite these holocausts America is today the strongest, the most influential and most productive nation in the world. Understandably proud of this pre-eminence, we yet realize that America's leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment.

It is logical that the United States should do whatever it is able to do to assist in the return of normal economic health in the world, without which there can be no political stability and no assured peace. Our policy is directed not against any country or doctrine but against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos. Its purpose should be the revival of working economy in the world so as to permit the emergence of political and social conditions in which free institutions can exist.
