Queer history and the history of disability are inherently connected. Beyond the myriad of queer disabled people throughout history, the medicalization of queer people has existed for a long time and continues to this day. This means that a lot of the abuses of disabled people have overlapped onto the queer community, and ideally this would give queer people a greater understanding and ability to stand in solidarity with the disabled community. In practice, this often isn’t the case. Eugenicist beliefs, ableist rhetoric, and a deep fear of aging and losing access to an abled body, are all things that run rampant within the queer community. It is past time to do better.
There is so much to learn from the people sitting on the intersection, and the queer people who have been forced through the medical system because of their queerness. Queerness and disability are connected, and that’s a strength for both communities. Within queer history is the history of disability and within the history of disability is queer history. To learn one is to learn the other, and let that be the joy of it.

Not a day goes by where I do not think about the advent of medicine like PrEP and wonder just what the people - especially queer people - who passed from HIV/AIDs during the AIDs crisis would think
And then, I read this survivor's testimony and it just makes me emotional. I think this is the closest answer we have. HIV has changed, and we must always remember the people who didn't see that change before it happened.

[URGENT] UK NHS consultation on puberty blockers
VERY SHORT DEADLINE! (Tuesday 1st November 2023)
The UK's National Health Service (NHS) are about to ban puberty blockers for all trans adolescents, except for a small group who are eligible and willing to be research subjects.
"As part of this NHS England-led process, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) was commissioned to review the published evidence. Overall, there was no statistically significant difference in gender incongruence, mental health, body image and psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents treated with PSH." -- 6-page introductory PDF to consultation
That's because puberty blockers don't change gender characteristics by definition, you absolute donuts.
They're carrying out a consultation on this because they have to, and there's only two days left. If you are in the UK and you are a young trans person or know any young trans people, please check out this consultation.
Here's the first question, to help you work out if you're in the target group:
Tumblr media
In "other", you could put anything like "friend of a trans adolescent", "family member of a trans child", etc. If you're a trans adult who was on blockers or who would have been on blockers if waiting lists had been shorter or family/doctors had been more supportive etc, choose "patient".
Deadline: Tuesday 1st November 2023.

Approximately 130,000 - 260,000 Americans have been forced to flee their homes because of legislation criminalizing trans existence.
That’s 8% of transgender Americans. An additional 43% of transgender Americans are seriously considering moving due to laws criminalizing our existence and healthcare.
“So many people are completely helpless to get out, even with all the bumps and roadblocks, the fact is I'm still one of the lucky ones.” Said Sheena, a trans woman who fled from from Florida.
“it's evident that the United States is in the throes of a swelling crisis of internally displaced political refugees. Over a million people, themselves contemplating relocation in the coming months, remain in a state of apprehensive vigilance, awaiting the potential signal that they too must bid farewell to their homes.”
Via Erin Reed, a professional policy tracker of transgender legislation. June 13, 2023.

Queer rights may be about our right to be normal- to be normal couples, to live normal trans lives, to be normal people. But queer rights are also about our autonomy to be odd. We are QUEER, after all- weird, odd, not normal. And that is something that was originally imposed upon us, but we have taken it. It is ours now. Because lgbt rights are about our right to be normal, yes, but it is also about bodily autonomy! It is about our right to live our lives with odd genders and weird relationship structures and queer bodies. Assimilation might sound like a fine way to escape prejudice- but quite frankly, it doesn't matter. Because we are not just fighting for our rights to live like cishet people, we are also fighting for our right to live without having to worry about putting a toe out of line. We are queer, and we always will be. We won't really be free until we can live our lives as odd, as strange, as queer as we want.

because this always comes up:
the word hermaphrodite is a slur when used to talk about human beings
it is also inaccurate to describe (most, if not all) intersex people in that way
“true hermaphrodite” is sometimes still used to describe someone with ovotesticular syndrome. it is up to an individual person whether or not they choose to refer to themselves in that way
also ovotesticular syndrome is one of the less common intersex variations
intersex people will sometimes choose to reclaim the word, but many of us prefer not to use it
if you are not intersex stop using the word hermaphrodite to refer to human beings

I feel so... down whenever I want to watch queer or trans videos because I know in the back of my mind that none of the current large queer content creators' content or community is safe for people like me, intersex people.
I love their work otherwise, but it hurts badly to hear them toss around casual intersexism in their videos constantly when discussing queer and trans issues and nobody ever mentions it.
And because these are large, popular creators, nobody has ever listened when I've tried to ask they adjust their language. My dms go ignored or unseen and my public comments get drowned out by fans defending their intersexist comments. It's emotionally draining and exhausting, I just want to be included in my own community.

You know what? I want a whole post for this:
Sex Repulsion is not the same thing as, or an excuse for, Sex Negativity
non-negotiable!
I am a sex-repulsed asexual. This means that I am uncomfortable and repulsed by the idea of engaging in sexual acts. This does not mean that I have an excuse to be repulsed by other people's sexual attraction or the right to police how other people engage in or express sexual acts or attraction.
Young queer people need to learn the difference between sex repulsion and sex negativity, and actively work to unlearn sex-negative attitudes. Asexuality, even sex-repulsed asexuality, is and should be fully compatible with sex positivity.
If you are uncomfortable with the idea of other people feeling sexual attraction or engaging in sexual acts that do not involve you in any way, that is not sex repulsion it is the cultural Christianity and you need to seriously work on that.

If you keep assuming that everyone with an identity you don't understand or relate to is a dangerous enemy, then you have more in common with transphobes than you think you do.
You have a fear response, and instead of interrogating it, you try to justify it by framing it as a legitimate threat. You start trying to convince others you're right because you're insecure and can't tolerate something you don't understand.
You act like these "weird queers" care about nothing more than trying to have sex with you when no one actually gives a shit about you, they're just trying to describe their experiences.

You're going to hear a certain (Tory) contingent celebrating that they've 'Banned conversion therapy' but unfortunately the legislation including a 'consent clause' which makes it hugely ineffective. Nobody 'volunteers' for conversion therapy.

The Trevor Project needs help holding upper management accountable for sudden devastating layoffs, and silencing those attempting to speak up about it!
The Trevor Project is a US-based nonprofit organization that provides support for struggling queer youth, providing 24/7 phone and text lines as well as other resources and community for many queer youth who are struggling to find support and a sense of stability. For those who work for this project, their jobs have meant everything to them, and the layoffs came suddenly, without the employees being able even so much as give feedback during this announcement.
"On the morning of June 14, The Trevor Project sent a meeting invite for 1:30 pm EST (2 hours before the meeting start time). The meeting was titled "988 Updates." In this brief meeting, staff at Trevor Project and staff contracted through Insight Global working for Trevor Project were informed that almost half of this 988 staff would be laid off and the last day for those folks would be July 2, 2023. Coordinators of the meeting from both Trevor Project and Insight Global turned off the chat feature and opened the Q&A, but have yet to still answer the questions asked by the staff. Leaders were stiff, emotionless, and cold while reading off of a script as if they were not destroying lives by what they were saying. 988 counselors and staff were also told not to stop taking crisis chats while this was happening, leading to our own self-crises while trying to support contacts. This was a highly unprofessional and inconsiderate meeting with life-changing news."
This has been utterly devastating for both the project, and those who are losing their jobs. Those affected were given a two week notice. As this is a primarily queer organization, many of those affected by these lay-offs face discrimination in their careers and have struggled to find jobs outside of queer affirming organizations.
As of writing this post, this petition only needs 255 signatures to pass, please sign if you agree that those in charge need to be held accountable and provide answers and solutions for the problems and damage that has been caused. You can also share this post, or the link to the petition itself to increase visibility. Thank you for reading.
We stand in solidarity with The 988 Trevor Project Team United.

It pride month so need remind everyone:
stop equating bigotry to intellectual and learning disability
Many of us who have learning disability and/or intellectual disability are queer too, we see you,
you are no ally to us.
---
every every every time see people argue against bigot, they make people out like self to be bigot, equal to bigot, is bigot, because "stupid, bad grammar, bad spell, bad read, bad bad bad brain".
---
saying "you're", "they're" is no gotcha.
so often we try fight for own self, or explain self, but because "stupid, bad grammar, you word bad", no take seriously, discount instantly. many many many of times in own community, told own identity "stupid, make head cave in".
and then you hold us up as target to laugh at "bigot bigot bigot haha stupid".
---
you can argue fight bigot without side step grab unrelated shit to laugh at mentally / intellectually disabled and pour out your abelism mask as "fighting bad people"
---
stop forgetting us, you dont support mentally disabled queer people
we never ever ever ever feel safe watch or read people argue against bigots, because Every time, equate people like us as bigot evil.
no care if "im disabled too, im autistic too, im mentally disabled too", no care, you eat own community alive. scum.
