Is America Chavez Black? The answer is it’s complicated and it is all Marvel’s fault

Let’s just start with the fact that we’re even having this conversation sucks. A character’s race only needs to be explicitly said when they’re a POC because whiteness is seen as the default and any identity outside of that needs to be proven, especially identities that are even farther proximity away from whiteness. You never have to hear anyone argue why Tony Stark is white, it’s just understood that he is. And yet here we are with America. *sighs*

Also let’s get it out of the way how her skin tone has been inconsistent depending on the artist. She is still dark skin majority of the time especially in recent years. I talked about that in this post here. But also light skin doesn’t equal nonblack either which this thread points out here

So whenever fans rightfully complain about the colorist lightwashing of America Chavez there are always other fans that come out of the woodwork who point out it has never been explicitly confirmed that she is Afro-Latina and honestly they wouldn’t be wrong.

However it’s not fans fault for assuming she is when the idea of her being black has been something Marvel has perpetuated over and over again.

She grew up in The Bronx/Washington Heights. I want to make it clear I am NOT saying only Afro-Latinos live in those areas but I think it’s worth noting how they both have huge Afro-Latine populations

I also think it’s worth noting that her home-city was retconned from the Bronx to Washington Heights around the same time as the In the Heights controversy

And yes that is where her adopted family is from but she states herself that the reason it felt like home is because she was surrounded by people who look like her

and they do look a lot like her

In one of the covers of her solo series she is dressed as Beyoncé from her formation video

The name itself is an ode to the Black Panther party

And the music video shows visuals of Black culture and BLM protests

In Young Avengers she had what appears to be 4 type afro puffs as a kid. Usually people don’t naturally have that hair texture unless they are Black or are mixed with Black

Then there’s this Marvel Rising cover where she just straight up looks like a dark skin Black woman. No debate about it

It’s not the fans fault that all this controversy surrounding her MCU casting exists now, it’s Marvel fault. They’ll use blackness for her aesthetics but don’t want to commit to the representation by putting it in her story. It’s frustrating for fans who see these signifiers of blackness integrated into her character only to be told it they don’t exist and we’re the delusional ones for seeing them. It honestly feels like a form of gaslighting at this point.

Often Afro-Latine characters are completely erased from U.S. and Latin American media and even when they are on screen usually they’re subjected to stereotypical side or background characters. So when there’s a perfect opportunity to cast Afro-Latine actor for a role like a well rounded black coded character and somehow it still ends up being made palatable for white audiences by casting a mestiza instead, to say it’s a misstep would be an understatement.

I made a list here of Afro Latina actresses who I think would’ve been more appropriate for the role. I wish they were at least given a chance. Hopefully one day when Marvel starts doing more projects outside of the MCU again we can get see Afro Latina America Chavez on our screens. Hopefully she’ll be older and Puerto Rican too

P.S. No one send hate to Xochitl Gomez. Like I said the blame is on Marvel. It’s likely she didn’t know what she was auditioning for and oh yeah she’s a child
