"He Being Dead Still Speaks"
It was 30 years ago today I received that call. You know “that call.” It’s one you’re expecting sooner or later, but hoping against hope that it’s later. The voice on the other end speaks softly, slowly, and kindly. In hushed tones they gently inform that your loved has died. On that day, April 25, 1994, the voice on the phone broke the news that my father, Roy C. Weliever, had passed from this…

Acts 13:36
John W. Gardner, who wrote the book “Excellence” says we have the potential to make a difference, not only in our own lives. But also in the lives of those we meet. Gardner illustrates that point by relating the true story of a cheerful gentleman who invested his life in others. When the old fellow met people he never asked the conventional questions that we usually ask such as “What do you do…

In Memory and Tribute to Bob F. Owen
The ancient wise man opined that “It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting” (Eccl.7:2). This sentiment was never more evidence and applicable than in our attendance at the memorial service for Bob F. Owen this past Saturday at the Temple Terrace Church of Christ. The Blessing of Being an "Ordinary Guy" Instead of the World's Greatest General
Melody Hammer Biddle shared this story on Edwin Crozier’s facebook page credited to Mark Twain. I’ve never heard this story before, but apparently it has been repeated in multiple books. A man died and met Saint Peter at the gates of heaven. Knowing that Peter was very wise, he asked a question that he had wondered about his whole life. Acts 4:5-31
Names mean something. For instance in America when you hear the name Patrick Henry, you think of patriotism, heroism, and courage. “Give me liberty, or give me death!” he proclaimed. On the other hand, Benedict Arnold conjurers up thoughts of betrayal, treason and disgrace. Continue reading Acts 4:5-31

Author and Bible commentator Daniel Lioy tells a story about Marquis de Lafayette, a French officer who provided invaluable assistance to George Washington and the struggling American army. After the war was over, he returned to France and resumed his life as a farmer of many estates. In 1783, the harvest was a terrible one, and there were many who suffered as a result. Lafayette’s farms were…

Fellowship is Fundamental
Don Graham tells a story about Linda, a young woman, who was traveling alone up the rutted and rugged highway from Alberta to the Yukon. Linda didn’t know you don’t travel to Whitehorse alone in a rundown Honda Civic, so she set off where only four-wheel drives normally venture. Continue reading Fellowship is Fundamental

Listen To Calvin? Or Learn from the Ants?
My facebook friend, Jon W. Quinn, recently posted a piece based on the old comic strip Calvin and Hobbs by Bill Watterson. Admonish One Another
Howard Hendricks tells the story in Footprints of a young man studying to be a minister. He was very talented, but was “riding rather than building on his background.” Toward the end of school year a caring professor called him into his office. “Bill, I’m disappointed in you,” the professor kindly said. “Really, Prof, why?” Continue reading Admonish One Another
