Happy Galentine’s Day! Pop! Goes the Music is back with a new set of music recs. This selection is all over the place genre-wise (in the best way—good music is good, no matter the genre), but hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. I’m super excited about a few indie finds on this one, and I had such a fun time putting it all together!
Featuring Mitski, Sfven, maya & ben, Lemmons, Ariza, Margaux Beylier, Clementine, Oscar Anton, TIGERMARIE, Serren Olivia, Jack Red, One Roommate, Frat Mouse, Hex Frog, Rodeo Glow, Whoa Dakota, Tuxedo Wildlife, clear eyes, Kevin Garrett & Kemba.
Listen on Apple Music, on Deezer, on Spotify, or on YouTube

🇬🇧 MEET... · For Jackie Marchal, music has always been an essential part of life. At home, and elsewhere. Early on, she began finding in it not only a means to express herself but also to process whatever she encounters in life. “When I was about 8 years old, I wrote a song called What Happens When You Die,” she recalls with a chuckle, over video chat, at the age of 22.
Today, the New York-based musician still sings about things that matter to her (her family, mostly) or that she’s figuring out. Honest, poetic, Marchal’s words take on a life of their own, set to a sound infused with a variety of influences—from Beach House to Alabama Shakes, with what remains of years of classical violin and choir singing.
Off the singer’s freshly-release first EP, Rhubarb Field is our Song of the week. Over video chat, Jackie Marchal told us the story behind it (it’s not actually about rhubarb), and ended up chatting about grief, family matters and personal growth. You can head to the link in the source of this post to read the interview.

🇬🇧 MEET... · When his very first song came out on August 31st, Mouad didn’t know what to expect. Would it find any ears willing to pay attention? “I imagined just… two people clicking and then —‘Ooh. This is sad.’” He pauses and smiles. “Then: ‘No.’” He chuckles before continuing on, as we talk over video chat a few days after the track’s release. “Because... these are times when most people don’t really want to listen to sad music, and I understand that.”
Lorraine is definitely not for those who exclusively enjoy upbeat, cheerful music. It’s a slow guitar-led ballad that builds, but never uses any drums. It notably showcases some gentle piano notes, too —courtesy of Aunyes Hermantin, Mouad’s girlfriend. It radiates a kind of Radiohead-meets-Paul-McCartney energy. Produced by Salim Daïma, the song feels like a dream or fantasy sequence in a movie.
“Lorraine” by Mouad is our Song of the week. The Moroccan singer-songwriter unveils his very first music video, filmed in Rabat’s Botanical Gardens, and tells us about his start in music and how he “dabbles in medicine”. To watch the music video (featuring two very cute kittens!) and read his story, you can head to the link in the source of this post.

🇬🇧 INTERVIEW · Coco like Chanel, June like Carter. Fascinated by France and the United States, German singer-songwriter June Cocó wanted to carry these significant influences in her stage name. The Leipzig-based (soon-to-be Berlin-based) artist learned to speak French and English at school, and never let go. Her love for these two languages (and cultures) also shines through her music, be it her original songs or her covers.
Neptune’s Daughter by June Cocó is our #SongOfTheWeek. We sat down (over video chat!) with the German musician to talk about the track, and we ended up also chatting about her love for nature, her worries about climate change and the need for more female acts at music festivals. To read the interview and watch the music video, head to our website through the link in this post’s source. 🧜‍♀️✨ 📸: Jordann Wood
