It's the way they made sure we knew that, not ONLY had Jess promised (cheerfully, no less!) to take Rory to the Prom, but that he was FOLLOWING THROUGH! They explicitly stated that he was sent to the office while he was TRYING to buy Prom tickets! And then even after the principal told him he was flunking out, he still kept trying to get them to let him go to the dance anyway so at least he'd get to give Rory this thing she wanted! Guys, he tried SO HARD! Like, the show made it VERY VERY CLEAR that he didn't just say one thing and then "not do it," they made sure to show that he was ACTIVELY TRYING! And KEPT TRYING to take her to Prom even as his own life was falling apart! If they could only let him do that ONE THING for HER, then at least not all would be lost. He was like, "Ok, I'm not graduating. That sucks, but you're missing the most important part here, which is that Rory wanted to go to the Prom." He CARED! SO MUCH! He really wanted to make her happy! 😫😭

You know what? Brian Fuller is a criminally underrated character in Gilmore Girls. The guy taught himself Korean to be able to speak to Lane's family when the band was invited to dinner, and he wrote a song for Lane, his friend, because he saw that she was hurt that her boyfriend was intentionally writing songs about every girl he'd ever met EXCEPT her. He's a great friend, and an all-around sweet and good person, whatever his respiratory ailments might be.

Ok, so here's one of MY unpopular Gilmore Girls opinions: I don't believe that Rory only stayed with Dean to keep everyone else (including her mother) happy. I don't. I think she did love him IN SOME WAY. Was she "IN Love" with him? It's hard to say. But she genuinely cared about him, enjoyed his company enough to want to be friends with him after breaking up, and... I do think there were some aspects of their relationship that she genuinely liked and wasn't sure she wanted to give up. I know a lot of people hate Dean (I'm not fond of him myself), but this isn't about MY preferences or YOUR preferences, it's about RORY'S, and when I look at the actual show without filtering it through my own wishes, that's what it looks like to me, especially given the way she kept comparing Dean to Jess after she started dating him. Rory wouldn't have done that unless there were parts of that relationship she missed! According to what Rory herself said, she LIKED the way Dean made her feel cared for and important. Even his jealousy and clinginess, which did bother her, could be explained away because they were "symptoms" of how "important" she was to him! He WANTED her! He wanted her more than Rory wanted him, actually, and sometimes? Sometimes that's an intoxicating thing, especially when you HAVEN'T always felt wanted. He made plans and took her out and made her feel "spoiled" (Rory's words!), and that made her feel special! She may not have been "in love" with him in a grand, all-consuming, passionate kind of way, but she liked "being his girlfriend" a lot of the time.

This is why I think she wavered so much when she did fall in love with Jess. Because despite the things she would gain from choosing Jess (the all-consuming, passionate kind of love, deep connection and companionship), she would be giving up (and hurting!) someone she felt a lot of affection for! And also giving up the ease of dependability, familiarity, and yes, someone who fit neatly into the life and relationships she already had. I think she was almost prepared to do so when Jess moved back to Stars Hollow "for her," but when he appeared to move on so quickly with Shane, it made her doubt whether Jess wanted her as much as she wanted him, and that felt dangerous. Why give up someone who clearly DID want her, to chase after someone who might not?

Yeah, anyway... I feel like I've wandered a bit, but the bottom line is: I really do think it was only a little bit about pleasing her mom, and a lot to do with how Dean was good at making her feel wanted, even if it was to a toxic degree.

#omg also the tags about jess— #thinking about how Rory sees loving with Dean as a constant presence and reassurance and Jess for his own reasons isn’t able to give that to #Rory while they date and that makes for the whole ‘Jess he’s great one minute and gone the next’ thing that Rory herself brings up in 4.22 #but it’s also just so heartbreaking to consider that Rory for the longest time…didn’t have reciprocation in the way she understood best #like yes she knows Jess Desires her and yes she knows he enjoys spending time around her. but he’s also distant and unwilling to b #be vulnerable. he won’t open up but worse he isn’t comfortable going out of his way to seek her out #and we complain about Rory wanting Jess to be Dean. but in this framework. she’s (I’d say rightfully) insecure! #jess is horrible talking about his emotions. he’s completely closed off to her for most of their relationship. and Then. he Leaves. #she tells HIM that she loves him. and she Does! Not! Get! Reciprocation! #for nine months tht was it! it makes my heart sore— #I love her graduation phone call so much :’) #and it’s also rotting my brain to think about Rory (who is canonically SO in her head) rationalizing her relationship with Jess and even #considering the fact that he didn’t want her or didn’t care about her in the way she cared about him

Whilst I think Jess begging Rory to come with him at the end of season 4 is perfect as devastating tragedy (he's too desperate to do anything but panic and ask her to do something crazy, she's still too hurt to do anything but say 'no.') I'm still SO curious about what scenario or specific set of emotional circumstance would, in an alternate reality, cause her to say 'yes' and spend the summer away with him like Joey and Pacey in Dawson's Creek.

the universe DOES actually have a sense of humor

#okay I was about to info dump so bad here and then decided that actually I probably shouldn’t #but I’ll just say the universe has been making sure I get rejected in increasingly elaborate and comical ways! #honestly rn I can’t even be mad! like at least it’s funny!

Everyone (including me) remembers all the horrible, unnecessary, painful drama with Luke and Lorelai in the second half of Season 6, but the thing is that I REALLY LOVED their relationship in the first half. 🥺 Like, THAT'S what I want to watch them doing! I want to watch them dealing with Lorelai's weird dog TOGETHER! And navigating ridiculous house remodeling problems TOGETHER! And Luke sponsoring that soccer team and them going to games and hiding from people in their car TOGETHER! And them supporting each other through the sorrows of life TOGETHER! Like, Amy seems to think that people would get bored if there wasn't some big, dramatic "will they or won't they end up together?" aspect to their relationship, but the honest truth is that I would have been happy to watch them navigating their crazy world together like that for the rest of the series. MORE than happy. HAPPIEST.

#also! truly cruel that we have been consistently deprived of them planning their wedding together #like I know there are a few scenes where Lorelai does the June 3rd stuff but I want to see Luk and Lorelai together!! I want to see her #loving the silliest goofiest little details but being like okay no Luke is gonna hate this I don’t want this anymore but then Luke goes and #buys those things for her because he knows it doesn’t matter thag much to him but it would make her so happy to hve (dancing rabbi #centerpieces) or something like that! #I want to see them make their guest list (and I know there’s that scene in the revival where they do but I want it to be an ACTUAL scene— #like Luke inviting Jess and having to be like ‘I know you never got along with him very well but he’s family’ and then letting us see what #lorelai’s updated views on Jess are! smthing like ‘he was young and I had a lot on my plate and he messed up but he was just a kid #he’s growing up and I think I’m in a better place to be able to see that’ #THE FLUFF POTENTIAL IS CRAZY >:( #and come ON I want more Emily Lorelai bonding! I want Emily and Luke bonding! #I want Emily to have a moment where she so briefly sees that Luke has BUILT his life in a way that she has never had to—it’s hard for her to #overcome her own prejudices but I want more of the season 1 Emily Luke dynamic #I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS 😭
