“QUARANTHINGS: Stay positive but not in Covid”
Tumblr media
We have been in this unusual lifestyle for more than a year now. Studies, work and leisure are all done from our home. No big gatherings, no parties, no events, and no Christmas shopping at tiangges and crowded malls. To be honest, I have positive and negative thoughts in my quarantine life. We all struggled to adapt to the new normal during the first wave of quarantine. It's difficult to see my friends and family only through a screen, and the only way I can go outside is to buy necessities. I'm sick of it. The old world, the outside world, is something I miss. Making Tik Tok videos and scrolling via social media are the only things that keep me entertained. However, social media also contains negative news about the world. The only way to stay in touch with people I care about and keep them up to date on our lives is through social media.
There are days when I have a nervous breakdown and have no idea why. It's exhausting. Particularly in the first week of online class, I decided to create a routine for myself in order to feel as though I were still in school. I began doing things that I had never had time to do before, such as opening my curtains, making my bed, slowly getting dressed, and so on. But it changes when time passes. I can’t handle this too much gadget radiation. Moreover, there are times that I really want to listen and learn from our professor but our internet is not cooperating. The coronavirus pandemic threw almost every part of school at once. It wasn't just about the transition from chalkboards to computers. But also, how to discipline the students. Imagine waking up two minutes before classes without taking a bath nor brushing my teeth. It’s not the usual me. Before this invisible enemy has engulfed the entire world, I always made myself productive every morning but due to the mind-set that my classmates and professors will not smell me nor can see me (if I choose to close my camera), this tolerates me to become unproductive.
Like other students, I also want academic break. The schoolwork is very exhausting. My eyes and back are also in desperate need of a rest. My thoughts need to be refreshed as well. We are still dealing with the effects of the pandemic, and schools should not add to the pressure on students. One of the reasons I want an academic break is that it relieves stress for us students. College is exhausting, without academic break, students will be unable to recover from the pressures of the online class. We students, too, are overburdened with schoolwork, and this academic break will go a long way toward refreshing our minds from the stressful world.
Furthermore, this is the very first time that we celebrate Christmas in a pandemic. The celebration for Christmas in a pandemic is unusual. While online simbang gabi is still available, there is still a cultural shift caused by this pandemic. One of the famous Filipino cultures that I practiced was eating Puto Bumbong and bibingka after the mass. This made me realize how this health crisis changes our Christmas culture. I miss the cool breeze of air while walking to church, I miss Christmas family gatherings, I miss buying gifts at the mall or tiangges, I miss Christmas parties with my friends and classmates, I miss everything we used to do before Christmas.
As the time passed by, there were certain aspects of this quarantine that I did not anticipate enjoying. Aside from making Dalgona coffee and following the latest Tik Tok dance trends. Quarantine has taught me things about myself that I would never have learned otherwise. It's also good to step away from life once in a while. I can honestly say that having a life slowdown has helped me take better care of myself. It taught me that having some leisure time isn't always a bad thing. I started to adore this quarantine set up; for example, in my online class, I don't have to get up early or travel two or more hours to get to class. And even if I'm at the grocery store purchasing necessities, I can attend lessons. I've always despised getting free time because I felt obligated to do something useful about it. Now that I think about it, I actually enjoy getting free time to do whatever I want, even if it isn't the most productive thing I might be doing. I appreciate taking this opportunity to focus on myself and improve my mental health.

“DO IT YOURSELF”
To be honest, I already watched seven of those ten “Do it yourself” videos, and actually, Rei Germar and Elle Uy are one of my favorite vloggers. “Do it yourself” video content really sells because of the ‘life hacks’ and interesting stuffs it can give to its viewers. Filipinos are very creative and resourceful. We inherit this in our Filipino parents who taught us that the waste in our house can be recycled, such as the empty bottle that can be turn into a flower vase. Filipinos love modifying, repairing and building things without a direct aid of professional.
The preferences of Filipinos in watching video, are those content that can benefit them and at the same time entertaining. Life hacks videos help the Filipino viewers to make their life easier. Filipinos are very practical in life. They also love to try new things, and this entertaining ‘do it yourself’ videos influence youth to be more creative and practical. This kind of content also inspire youth to create things they want in the cheapest cost. The character of Filipinos can somehow reflect into their preferences in video content.

JOURNTALKS: MOBILE JOURNALISM
Last March 12, 2021, we conducted a seminar about “Mobile Journalism”. The way we access information has changed as a result of mobile journalism. This digital form of storytelling has taken the world by storm. While portable electronic devices allowed this art form, newsrooms, mobile phone carriers, and social media networks have all contributed to its continued development. Mr. Zhander Cayabyab, the speaker in our “Journtalks”, explained that the instantaneous communication techniques of social media have raised new standards in the world of journalism. Today's news must be updated in real time if it is to get the attention of the public. He also said that Journalists are supposed to be jacks-of-all-trades which means mobile journalists should be capable of publishing, shooting and handling social media pages as a result of this.
Mobile journalism is rapidly becoming an indispensable tool for news stories, from reporting political news stories to covering village fairs. Publishers must be the first to transmit in order to beat rivals to distribute the most up-to-date news and information. Mobile journalism has the advantage of allowing news stories to publish quickly. The flexibility of being able to shoot, edit, and broadcast all in one location reduces the time it takes to transmit video, speeding up the process.
The statement of Mr. Cayabyab that really appealed to me is when he talked about the advantages of “MOJO”. He said that mobile journalism has a significant advantage over conventional media outlets as the quickest medium for breaking news. People's demand for real-time knowledge is specifically answered by this modern method of storytelling. Traditional journalists, who usually take more time to thoroughly construct a story before releasing it to the public, will be threatened by this. He also explained about the benefits of “MOJO”, mobile journalism has helped society in a variety of ways. The ability of mobile journalists to connect and communicate with the audience through mobile devices and social media is an obvious advantage of mobile journalism. Another benefit he mentions is that ‘the public can now, more than ever, participate actively in the production of news reports.’ People may engage in citizen journalism by sharing their side of the story through text, images, and video footage. Eyewitness and first-hand accounts shed light on global problems in ways that were previously difficult to achieve.
Among the many advantages of mobile journalism, concerns about privacy, ethics, and truthfulness remain potential disadvantages. Untrustworthy or misleading information can quickly flood social media. Today, anyone with a smartphone can film or capture video, but the potential for anyone to upload, tweet, or distribute information causes a lack of control over what is created and disseminated. Since mobile journalism is so accessible, sensitive or violent material can be published.

“BUILD AN ENGAGED AUDIENCE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA”
Tumblr media
Some people go on social media to unwind, catch up on the latest news, or simply to see what others are up to when they are enjoying themselves. In other words, Social Media enables users to communicate with news, material, and each other from the comfort of their own homes. If I were the famous journalist, I can use these five small steps to engaged with my audiences effectively. Letting the sources to know my story is an effective way to reach a number of audiences. I will allow members of the public to pitch and assign my stories. As a result, stories would be more "personally important" to readers, making them more likely to connect with their social media networks.
It's not enough to hope that my news organization's social media team can tweet links to my posts instead I need to tweet them myself to get my stories in front of the right people. And also, I will include name of sources in tweet and Facebook article, then when I finish the post, I will send an email to the people I talked with and ask them to tweet it. If they do, and if they have a significant number of followers with whom they frequently communicate, the story is likely to reach people who may not otherwise be aware of it.
As a famous journalist, it is also important to link my work to those related sites that covered the same article I did. There is simple search tool on Twitter that is useful for finding key terms. Twitter's advanced search page, which allows us to search by location, will help us narrow down our search. The audience will find similar tweets within 1 mile to 1,000 miles of my location by typing in my location and a key word. When sending a message to my audience, it is important to personalize it. Since I am sending it to a person who cares deeply about the subject and may have a network of people who care just as much, sending an individual message to one person may be more successful than transmitting it to a wide number of people into the noise. And lastly, to maximize my audience, it is important to use social media optimization.
There is no doubt, Twitter is an important platform for news organizations. I see journalists use it all day to come up with story ideas, exchange news, and connect with one another. So, I've long assumed that most journalists are aware of its intent and importance.

“SLEEPING STREAMER”
Many aspiring creators fantasize about waking up to viral fame and wealth. Now the dream is starting to resemble reality. Compared to the first video where man caught sleeping in the middle of the game, the second video which the Chinese man recorded himself sleeping, garnered more views compared to the first one. And also, this Chinese man sleeping-stream content became a trend in TikTok. Thousands of people tuned in on these hilarious content videos in Tiktok and in Facebook. TikTok users have started live-streaming themselves in the middle of the night.
Using the hashtag #sleepingsquad, a large number of teenagers started casting their sleep on different platform. On our previous readings, we tackled about engaging audiences, it is important to engage audiences by linking the videos to those related sites that covered the same content. And let the audience share your sleeping stream to other site to let your hilarious content reach a large number of people. I notice that TikTok sleep-streamers normally make a promotional video and post it to their feeds before going online, revealing the sleep-stream that will take place that night. When it's time to go to bed, they set their phones up on nightstands, climb under the covers, and press the live button.
The appeal of watching sleep-streams isn't so much about the person streaming as it is, but the pop-up community in the chat section of the stream. People find this kind of content as oddity and hilarious, many will comment and will share the sleeping stream in different sites and pages. It's just a way to have a more live discussion than the comments section on someone’s edited posts. It’s a hub for people to have conversations that made this sleeping stream content trend and garnered millions of viewers.
